ESata express cards without hassle? Recommendations?

I got two 1TB WD My Book Studio drives. Currently connected to MBP via
800 Firewire. The drives each have an esata port.
Anybody here bought and successfully use an esata expresscard in MBP express card slot to
connect the same or similar without the hassle of having to troubleshoot?
Any specific card recommendations for a trouble-free card, please?
Most importantly, have you experienced a noticeable and significant performance improvement in, for
example, photoshop with drive thus connected as scratch drive - or loading pics into, eg, Lightroom or Aperture?

The Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 17" still has an ExpressCard.
I have had better luck using direct connect "native" SATA enclosures with eSATA ExpressCards on the MacBook Pro.

I use the Sonnet Tempo Pro ExpressCard with the SeriTek/2EN2 enclosure and the Mid-2009 17" MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5.8) with 4GB of memory. I have not experienced kernel panics with this configuration.

ESata express card. - opinions wanted

I've got a Lacie 1.5Terabyte HD and a Lacie eSata express card. I have created 2 partitions on HD, one for installing MAc OS X and the other one for data. Inserted Mac OS X disk that came with Mac, restarted Mac, boot up fine but the Lacie drive is not shown in the list of drives I can choose from to install the OS on. Am I correct if I say that is because the Express Card needs its driver to function ? Connected the drive with fire wire and installed the OS, connected drive to eSata card again. When I go to preferences, I can select the Lacie drive to start up from but the computer do not start up from it, it start up from internal HD, Am I correct if I say it is because the eSate express card is only seen by the Mac after the driver is loaded ?

RE: eSATA express card/34 and External Hard Drive for MacBook Pro

I have a 17" MacBook Pro and do lots of movie editing. I need a fast external hard drive option to use. My internal is totally used up. Also need a back up drive.
I am a newbie and all of my info is based on googling. My FIRST QUESTION: Can I, and would it be a good solution, to use an express card 34 such as, Sonnet Tempo or Firtek SeriTek/2sM2-E with an external hard drive such as SeaGate 500GB or 300GB.
QUESTION 2: Why do so many of the SATA hard drives come without a case or enclosure?
And QUESTION 3: Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with the express card/34 and SATA external hard drives.

1. Yes, eSATA would be a good choice for an external enclosure with a SATA drive. Alternatively, you could use Firewire 800, but it's mostly a matter of choice.
2. SATA drives a primarily used in desktop machines. SATA capable enclosures have made them usable outside of desktops.
3. I can tell you from experience to get an enclosure with a good chipset. It makes all the difference in the world. Oxford is very good for firewire. Cypress AT2+ and Prolific 3507 are excellent for USB 2.0.

USB/eSata express card not working on stock kernel

I have a weird problem and I don't seem to find any solution by myself. Let me give you some background info on what I plan to do.

The card does work fine only on the Ubuntu machine. I would like to make it run on the two other ones as well. I thought I might get help here getting it to work on machine 3 and then transfer the results to machine 2. What really matters to me is eSata, btw, I do not even have a USB 3.0 device to test with.

I wouldn't know of any attached disks, and neither does it show up. Note that it is only the card I plugged in, no hard drive attached to it.

Apart from the supposedly found block device (can't judge) I am not sure if there is anything that is really eSata specific and not USB 3.0 related.
So far what I think I can tell from the output is that the modules
pciehp pci pcieport
seem to be dealing with the express card as such whereas
xhci_hcd
takes care of USB 3.0. I cannot see any clear reference to the eSata connector, which might not be surprising if the bus is just passed through (again: not sure).

Sticking to my suspicion that this might just be a USB related issue and eSata might still work due to some sort of passthrough, I attached the very eSata drive that I could mount on Ubuntu. It did not work.
I then researched and found this blog post: http://okomestudio.net/biboroku/?p=1360
So I downloaded the pkgbuild for the arch linux core kernel and checked the config. It matched the recommendations.
Another hint I found was to unload acpiphp and force-reload it. However, this tip does not seem to apply to the arch kernel:
[user@3-arch:~$ sudo rmmod acpiphp
rmmod: ERROR: Module acpiphp is builtin.
Anyone any idea on how to make the card work?

I did a backup before I upgraded using X 10.7.5 and everything worked fine. The eSATA drive is not seen using Disk Utility either.

The driver has to come from the manufacturer of the card, so your two options are to get another card or to use your full backup to go back to 10.7.5. That assumes it's a clone backup and not Time Machine.

Apiotek 0003D esata express card

Anyone got any exprience of using this card, there web site appears to support Mac with Mac driver, and its a lot cheaper than sonnet. Appears to use the SiI3132 silcon image controller.
Alternatively does anyone have positive experience of another card.
I tried the apple care line for advice, but unfortunately they are not trained to talk about experiences with third party products.

I can't speak to the esata card, but I have an Apiotek 18 in 1 express card reader and it works great. It was the cheapest one on the market at the time of purchase, which was a bit worrisome, but I haven't had a single problem with it for 4 months now of constant use. It was plug and play as well, I didn't have to install any software or drivers.

Hi, Rex. No, there's no ExpressCard slot in a Powerbook; it's a diffferent slot format from the CardBus slot you have. But there are CardBus-to-SATA adapters that would work for you. Just Google "CardBus-to-SATA" (in quotes) to locate some of them. Here's one such adapter offered by a vendor I've dealt with and trust:

Note that I have no personal experience with SATA and haven't seen or used this card myself.

The reader that posted recently about buying an Addonics SATA Expresscard for his MacBook Pro wrote it's working in Windows XP but not MacOS. (As I mentioned in that post - I'd rather buy one that listed Mac support)

First two are grayed out. So the hardware is being recognized at some level, although the card is not recognized in the System Profiler.
The card uses the Silicon Image 3132 chipset, which has OS X 10.4 drivers (available on the Silicon Image website). So, there must be some Addonics-only chipset in the card that requires a specific driver. Interestingly, on the Windows XP side of things, Addonics says that you can tell if the card is properly installed if under the device manager you see "Silicon Image SiI 3132 SATALink Controller" under 'SCSI and RAID Controllers.' So, I'm at a loss. In a curt email from Addonics, I was told: "We're sorry, we don't have MacOS driver for any SiI chipsets."

I have a Seagate eSata External Drive which comes with an eSATA PCI card.

I think the Radeon 9800 is certainly the most powerful graphics card you could buy for your G4 and would do everything you need.
Just be aware there are at least 3 different Mac versions though.
There's a G5 version, the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition, which is 8X AGP and has 256MB VRAM.
There's an older Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, which is 2X/4X AGP and has 128MB VRAM.
Finally there's a newer Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, which is 2X/4X AGP and has 256MB VRAM.
So long as you get one of the 2X/4X AGP versions, either with 128MB or 256MB VRAM, it should work fine.
It's perhaps also worthwhile mentioning they do require a separate internal power connection, although this can be taken from a hard drive molex power connector. Also they have a cooling fan which can be noisy.

If your card is listed on the product site from Sonnet (e.g: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_sata_express34.html), you could get the answer by looking at the "Technical Specifications". Be sure that you're looking at the specifications of the correct card, since some seem to be compatible and some are not. Furthermore, if your card is based on the Silicon Image Sil3132 chip, it's (today) not supported. If there are any doubts left, try to connect Sonnet directly...

ESATA PCI Express card not being recognized

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz and I'm having trouble getting an eSATA PCI Express card to be recognized in either MAS OS X (10.5.6) or Win XP SP3.
When I plug a FireWire PCI Express card into the slot with a drive attached it gets recognized right away but the eSATA doesn't.
I can go into the system profiler when the card is plugged in and MAC OS X sees the card but the drive doesn't get mounted, or there is no prompt for me to initialize the drive (if it's a new, non-formatted drive). I've tried installing the driver that comes with the eSATA card with no change.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can try?

Typically, this type of issue is caused by an incompatible enclosure or a card problem.
Please provide a link to the card and the enclosure for additional help. If you need an ExprressCard/enclosure combination that works I would suggest FirmTek.

According to the pictures of my product I posted below , there is no express card slot. So eSata is out. And as I was said, there is no real functional difference between an enclosure and a cable. Is there a very good option to have eStat port?

As you said my HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment Notebook PC support does NOT have [B]eSATA/USB combination port. So, I really don't see any eSata port on the case of my laptop, such as USB3, USB2 ports, and other connectors, such VGA, and HDMI, and so on.
However, my question is as long as my my HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment Notebook PC support does NOT have [B]eSATA/USB combination port, then I don't know if my existing internal Toshiba HDD drive is connected to an eSata interface port of my laptop or not.
Moreover, What I know is that an eSata port can be a port inside a PC, and not shown in the left/right side of the case of a PC like USB3/2. As a result, if I want to convert my existing internal Toshiba HDD drive as an external HDD to be connected to a USB 3.0/2.0 port, how could I do as long as my existing internal Toshiba HDD drive has only eSata interface port, or otherwise it cannot be installed inside my laptop via eSata port.
