Establishing E-mail Accounts

[Hope complaining about services is OK on this forum. Please note: sarcasm is just one of my talents.]
Great forum content. Too bad it can't be searched for more specific issues. For all I know, this question has been answered several times already.
My issue concerns establishing e-mail accounts and I'm pretty sure I got the wrong answer from Verizon's 'chat' support.
Per Verizon chat support; "mail sent to any Verizon e-mail account or sub-account will appear to come from, or go to the primary Verizon e-mail account". I don't think this is true as my daughter has 3 different 'verizon.net' e-mail accounts and I can send messages to any or all of them from my Hotmail (or any other) account. The messages arrive at separate mail boxes, and messages she sends appear to come from separate addresses.
VERY strange arrangement if what chat support says is true.
Second issue: Verizon has already established two e-mail accounts for me (?!?). One is based on my user name for 'My Verizon'. The other appears to have been generated by Verizon.net, but bears no resemblance to any other account identifiers. I'd like to establish my own accounts and feel as a mature adult that I might be able to handle it.
Maybe these guys to learn a few things about support from their sister company Verizon Wireless. That end of the business has had good support from the beginning. Started with their predecessor (Airtouch), and is ingrained in their culture.
Keep trying guys, you'll get it.

To answer your second question first; when the account was opened Verizon assigned an internal Verizon ID(i.e... res8s14c random ID but unique) this ID is the primary ID and it cannot be changed or modified, however you are allowed to create what is considered a "Verizon Email Alias" which allows you to create your own user name(depending on availability) and once it gets created it cannot be changed. The Verizon ID and the new user name are now linked and one in the same but with an alias.
Example: {edited for privacy}@verizon.net = [email protected]
                         Verizon ID                    Verizon User Name(Alias)
Technically if we were to send an email to any of these above, either one will reach the same email user. In the end Verizon creates a Verizon ID for internal purposes and the user creates a user name for external purposes, but they are both linked together.
Once the primary is registered or alias created you are allowed to create/modify/delete any sub-accounts under the primary account. I do have to agree that the messages do not go to the primary email address, each goes to their own address; maybe what the rep from the chat process was trying to say is that any sub account is linked to the primary; the statement  "mail sent to any Verizon e-mail account or sub-account will appear to come from, or go to the primary Verizon e-mail account" most likely refers to sub-accounts being linked to the primary Verizon ID/user name and therefore allowing Verizon to track a sub-account to the main account of origin.

  • Mail Accounts in Mail

I had to re-establish one of my e-maila accounts in Mail and I can't see any messages.  It shows me how many messages are unread in the left panel, but no messages are displayed in the main window.  Can someone suggest a fix?

If you deleted the account in Mail in order to re-create it, you deleted all messages in account mailboxes.  If the account was a POP account, those messages are probably not still on the server, but you can be sure by selecting the account, pressing command-i and seeing what messages are reported as being on the server.  If the account was IMAP, then the messages should all still be on the server.  You may simply need to force the account to sync (Mailbox -> Synchronize All Accounts).
If the messages are gone, do you have any backups?

  • What is the advantage of an iCloud mail account?

I recently updated to iOS 5 on my 64GB iPad 2 +3G. I signed up for iCloud using the same Apple ID I have been using all along.
I was also able to create a new iCloud mail account using @me.com.  What is the advantage of having this new email account?
I kind of understand the function of iCloud. It enables me to access the same content via all my iOS devices.  If I have a photo in my iPad 2, for example, iCloud could push that same photo to my iPhone if I had one.  (It is not much use to me now as I have no other devices besides my iPad 2. I guess I could use the computer at the library and access stuff at iCloud.com.)
The two email accounts I already have are already accessible using other devices.
I can access the same Yahoo account using my iPad 2, an iPhone, or a computer at the local library. So, why do I really need this iCloud account?
I have seen postings from others who have had prior Apple IDs, @me.com accounts, and something called MobileMe. My head spins when reading those posts.
I am new to the Apple world, so luckily I don't have those problems concerning the use of previously established stuff.
I used the same Apple ID I already had to set up my iCloud, but I used a slightly different variation of that email address to set up the iCloud mail account.
Was that a mistake? I am now wondering if I should have kept it all the same. It tells you you cannot change the @me.com address once it is established anyway.
Also, the iPad is considered superior to other tablets because of the wealth of apps available (140,000). Isn't that a little hyped?
There seem to be a lot of duplicative apps that are not too useful. For example, there are tons of calculator, alarm clock, and reminder apps in the app store.
Thanks for any insights you can provide.

"What is the advantage of having this new email account?"
It is simply an extra email if you wish to use it. You don't have to.
"Also, the iPad is considered superior to other tablets because of the wealth of apps available (140,000). Isn't that a little hyped?"
No. It is actually +600,000 apps.
The 140,000 is iPad specific apps. You can also run iPhone apps and universal apps just fine.
Sure there are lots of duplicates and a bunch of apps are lame but there are definitely plenty of very good quality apps.

  • Could someone PLEASE tell me how to set up more than one POP mail account.

I am soooo frustrated. Before I upgraded to Tiger I had no problems setting up my mail accounts. Now, I can only set up one POP mail account. I have three mail accounts that I desperately need to set up from the same ISP server, all POP accounts. On Panther and earlier, all I had to do was add the accounts. Now I have ONE POP account and when I try to set up another I get an error message that I already have a POP account set up. Why is this happening and what happened to the old system that worked just fine. I am so annoyed with this. It simply defies logic!!!!

I don't know if this will work or not, but why don't you try using bogus pop and/or smtp server information when you initially establish the accounts with Mail's setup wizard? Just continue through the "warning: cannot validate server" messages that the wizard will give you. Then go into Mail > preferences > accounts and highlight each of the new accounts, one at a time, and try changing the incoming pop and outgoing smtp mail server information to what it is supposed to be?
For the "Outgoing" server just use the pull-down menu, to select it, and when all accounts are done, go into that same pull-down menu and choose "Edit Server List..." to remove the bogus smtp server information.
Incoming should be just renaming that pop server in the "Incoming server" field.
If that doesn't work, I've got something riskier you could try, again with no guarantees, and that is editing your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file using either the Property List Editor that comes with XCode Tools (will launch automagically when you click on that .plist file if XCode is installed) or with the pico editor in Terminal, and possibly renaming some folders in your ~/Library/Mail folder, too. Again, start with the bogus server info, then find those entries in the .plist file and make changes there.
Note: if not familiar with the notation, "~" means your "home" directory.

  • How do I do a clean install, and keep mail accounts?

A little background: We have several Macs, and several email accounts. We're buying new machines and on some would like to mostly start over, using the App Store to install programs as each machine requires, cutting out a lot of the disk loading.
The most important goal is to get a fresh install, BUT keep all the various Mail accounts (let's establish that as a starting point). BTW: All our machines have the same Mail accounts across the board.
What I'm getting so far is a bloated HDD when I try to upgrade directly over Snow Leopard, and a nice tight machine that lacks the Mail accounts when doing a clean install.
SPECIAL REQUEST: I normally appreciate when people take guesses about offering solutions, BUT in this case I would appreciate it if answers addressed the specific question of preforming an almost clean install that retained all the email accounts, their configurations, and their messages. I realize that the solution request here may be a bridge too far, but I thought I would ask because I suspect a lot of people moving to the mid-2011 MacBook Air might need such a solution too.
    Thanks in advance!
    Chris

    Found the answer elsewhere.
Working with 2 machines; original one with Snow Leopard and the source email accounts/messages/etc., and a second machine with a Clean Install of OSX 10.7 Lion loaded to a fresh or reformatted hard drive. In my case, coming from a 24" iMac (320GB HD) that had the source email accounts I wanted to keep, and going to a new mid-2011 MacBook Air with 128GB HD.
Long story short, starting from the "user"/Library/... account on the Snow Leopard machine, 3 things have to be copied to the Lion machine and placed in the same directories:
    /Keychains
    /Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    /Mail (folder)
Keep in mind that the user Library is a hidden folder in Lion.

  • STRANGE PROBLEM with "Create New Mail Account.scpt" when creating POP acct.

I am using "Create New Mail Account.scpt" to create a POP account. It creates the account successfully. It fetches the mails successfully. Now the problem begins. After fetching all the mails once if u click "Get Mail" in mac mail, it fetches all the emails again and has now 1 original and 1 copy of the email set which is on the server. I just need 1 copy of the mail set not multiple. Please give me a solution or direct me to a help.
    Thanks

Hi amiaba, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I can't quite tell what it's doing, but open Keychain Access in Applications>Utilities, click on your Keychain on the left, put .mac in the search bar, once you find it, double click on it and click show password.
If you have no mail in there try this with Mail quit.
Drag this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Start Mail & see if it steps you through it.
Not sure on the .uk thing, but is Date & Time>Time Zone set to the UK?

  • Anyone besides me get an annoying popup that cannot be deleted/closed reading:  FaceTime Password Please enter your password for "my e-mail account name" Never used FaceTime.

    Dear Community,
Anyone besides me get an annoying popup that cannot be deleted/closed reading:
    FaceTime Password
Please enter your password for "my e-mail account name"
It happened to me today for the first time since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.3, no "stop lights" in the title bar of the popup, in fact nothing at all.
I've never established a FaceTime account. So I tried to delete FaceTime from the Applications folder on the "system" disk thinking this may eliminate the popup. Mavericks informed me "Cannot delete FaceTime as it is used by the operating system.
Is this a MAC virus? Or is this an example user community alpha/beta testing that Apple just announced?
    TIA,
    GonzoBernelli

That being the case, why then did the FaceTime popup even appear in the first place?
It's not clear to me what it is. If it occurs again, please take a screenshot of the popup and post it in a reply.
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse button. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
The screenshot attachment option for this support site appears only on computers - not on iPads.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

  • How to change the order of Mail accounts

Is there a way I can adjust the order of how my Mail accounts appear? I have six accounts on my iPhone, but generally only receive e-mails to two of them, so I'd like to put them at the top of the list.
    Thanks!

    You're welcome.
I'm not sure how the account order is established on the iPhone when transferring email accounts from your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process. I access only two email accounts and I manually created both on my iPhone.
You can delete all accounts on your iPhone, and then select only one email account at a time under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences followed by a sync - selecting the account you want listed first. Follow this by deselecting the account under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences and then select the next account that you want listed on your iPhone followed by a sync.
Repeat the same for the 3rd account, 4th account, and so forth.
Another thing to check, what order are the email accounts listed under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences? Does the order match the order of the accounts on your iPhone? If so, can you change the order of the accounts under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences? If yes, you can delete all email accounts from your iPhone followed by transferring all 6 email accounts at one via the iTunes sync process.

  • Undoing twin Mail account?

I was having trouble downloading messages from my university pop account after recently switching to a new machine and stupidly decided to create a new account with a different label but the same settings to see if there was some hidden problem.
When activated the new account started competing with the old one with neither working properly. When I tried to delete the new account I also lost all of the messages in the inbox from the old one. I was able to 'rebuild' the original account inbox once, but after I closed Mail and reopened it they seemed to be lost.
I do have a relatively recent time machine backup, so all will hopefully not be lost. But before messing things up any further I need some advice on how to get rid of the twin account without doing any unnecessary damage, and maybe how to proceed from there.
    Thanks!

I have managed to resolve the problem of not being able to received my AOL e-mail via Lion Mail.
It was quite drastic action so please save any e-mails that you have on the Mac rather on the e-mail server.  All of mine are on AOL's server.
The solution I found was. Firstly shut down Mail then via Go to Home (in the drop down menu) then Library and find the Mail folder.
Deleted all the files within the Mail Folder that related to your e-mail provider, in my case AOL.   Do not delete the Mail folder itself.
Once you have done this re-launch Mail and let the mail assistant take you through re-establishing your e-mail account.
It worked for me and I hope it does for you.  Please let me know how you get on.
    Best Regards,
    Maurice 49.

  • Mail account type change

We have a user who recently got an ipad.  Until now she only accessed her email via a laptop with mail.app or via a browser.  Now she wants to access with the mobile device and keep the laptop, ipad and server email messages in sync.
The email account is set up on her laptop as a POP account and as an IMAP account on the ipad.  We'd like it all to be set up using Exchange protocol.
If we delete the existing POP account and re-establish the account as exchange, what will happen to all the old email messages on the laptop?  The user does not want to lose them.
    Thanks for any help.
    Rich

You can drag the mail folder (not the application or icon, the mail folder that houses the messages) to the desktop and all of her messages will be stored there and can be reimported back into the mail application. Its a good way to back up incase something happens!
If you're on OSX 10.7, its a hidden folder. In previous versions, you can spotlight search and the 'mail' folder will show up (not to be confused with the 'Mail Downloads' folder). If she's on OS X 10.7, you can find the folder like this:
    1. Click the 'Finder' icon on your dock (happy face guy)
    2. At the top of your screen you'll see the Apple > Finder > File > Edit etc etc... Click 'Go'
    3. Select 'Go To Folder' and type ~/library and press 'Go'
    4. (You should be in the library folder at this point) -- find the 'Mail' folder and drag it to the desktop.. then you can delete and re-add the mail account and reimport the mail and mailboxes.
    Hope this helps!

  • How to manage my "non-icloud" mail account on multiple devices?

I have setup my Apple mail account on my ipad mini and my iMac to receive e-mail messages via my e-mail address established through my internet service provider (comcast.net).  How do I configure the Apple mail account so that actions (i.e. delete) in the mail account of one device also occurs in the mail account of the other device?

YOu only can if the mail provider use imap or exchange protocol the old pop3 does not

  • "A secure connection couldn't be established" from Mail, Contacts & Calendars

While trying to sync with my Google Calendar account via the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" preference pain, I am receiving the error message "A secure connection couldn't be established." The dialog windows goes on to offer that it can continue to try creating the account anyways. I instruct it to do so, however after processing for a while, this too fails. The final error message is "There was a problem setting up the account. iCal couldn't discover the account settings for the CalDAV server "google.com". My Google mail account syncs without problem.
I expect "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" to be compatible with Google Calendar. Am I missing something?

I played with this some more today and have worked around it for now. I launched iCal and went to add a new account there. I first tried leaving the account type as automatic and entered my Gmail account and password. That attempt failed. I next tried specifying an account type of Google, and that also failed. I finally gave in and set it explictly to CalDAV. I entered the settings for CalDAV as described by Google at http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=99358#ical and it connected fine and works. Now, what makes this interesting is that both iCal and "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" view the account I added this way as a Google/Gmail account, not as a manually added CalDAV account to 'some server.'

  • Cannot re-add Yahoo mail account

Hi!  My boyfriend recently updated his password, but then couldn't access his account on the Mac Mail App (works fine on iPhone).  He deleted the account and tried to re-add it.  However, the mail app on the Mac would not let him re-add the account.  This is a Yahoo account.  I tried to add a Gmail account and had the same problem: "A secure connection couldn't be established.  Click 'Continue' to continue creating  the account.  You can edit the account later in iCal.app preferences if necessary."  I click "Continue," and a new message reads: "There was a problem setting up the account.   iCal couldn't log in  to the CalDAV server 'google.com.'"  So, neither a Google nor Yahoo account can be added at this time, though it worked fine before.  Possibly a glitch.
    Can you please assist?

same here i setuped my yahoo email from Settings - Mail - Add Account - Yahoo!   it was working fine but few days aback i changed my yahoo mail password and its not working i deleted all my mail accounts including gmail hotmail and yahoo setuped again but still yahoo mail not working this is irritating like ****....pop smtp settings i tried they are also not working!!

  • Is there a way to change a Mail account from POP to IMAP?

    Greetings,
Is there a way to change a Mail account from POP to IMAP so as not to have to create a new account?
    Thanks

GMail offers both without you have to pick one or the other? If so, and changing the server doesn't work then you will need to re-establish the account in Mail. Don't delete the old account (or you will lose any downloaded messages) - there's no reason why you shouldn't have both available. You can move the messages from the POP account to another folder and then delete it.
