Ethernet Port Speeds on PowerMac G5

I just recently upgraded my cable modem and have it connected via a new ethernet cable to my Time Capsule.
My Mac Book Pro (2.4 GHz) and my 2004 PowerMac G5 (2.0 Ghz) are both connected to my Time Capsule via new ethernet cables.
I have been running SpeedTest.net on both computers and on my MBP I can achieve 32MB/s Down and 5 MB/s up. When I try the same test on my PowerMac G5 the speeds are 5-15 MB/s Down and 1 - 3 MB/s Up.
Since the Modem and Cables are new, both machines have Giga Ethernet Ports, and are connected to the the same Apple Router the I would think the problem is with my PowerMac. I am tempted to buy another ethernet card to fix this but I have a couple of questions before I do.
1) Any suggestions on really fast/dependable ethernet cards?'
2) I downgraded the Ethernet ports speeds to 100MB/s, saw some improvement, but not enough, is there anything else that can be adjusted with software (already have the latest firmware)
3) Any software to measure or test the port speeds other then Network Utility ?

UPDATE -
I readjusted the Ethernet Port Speeds to 100mbs and rebooted the PMG5 and now I am getting much higher download and upload speeds from the net/router
Its seems the reboot made the difference - When in Doubt - REBOOT !

    What is Apple's reason for making the ethernet ports on the new Wifi Extreme 10/100 instead of the now common 10/1000 Gigabit variety?

    The most obvious reason is that Apple realizes that few home users would benefit from the higher speed when using Apple’s base station. Most users doing professional type work would be using a Mac Pro for example and most likely professional type routers, themselves quite different from consumer routers such as Apple’s base station.
    My guess is that the next base station will have the higher speed. Methinks Apple rushed into the latest with “N” to keep up with the router competition, which is also offering “N”. I suspect the next iteration of the base station will have the higher speed.
    Of course the higher speed is useful only for a LAN. Speed to the internet is governed by the ISP used. If you have a home LAN with only a few computers attached, you wouldn’t likely see much of an improvement with the higher speeds depending on how much you are transferring. For most home users, that is not very much for a given transfer.
    The higher Ethernet speed is not the Holy Grail of speed improvements. I suspect more theoretical than real when applied to the world of home users. The latest base station not having the higher Ethernet speed is not a big deal.

    Do all Ethernet ports slow down to 10 Mbps when I plugin my old PC to the Airport Extreme?
    I understand that the 4 Ethernet ports all support 10/100/1000 Mbps. I have an old PC with a 10 Mbps Ethernet network interface card and I think my DLS modem also has a slot Ethernet port.
    So I wonder if my MacPro and the MacBook Pro will be able to "talk" to each other at the full 1000 Mbps?

    I believe that the other ports will continue to operate at their full speed. You can determine the speed of a port with the "Info" pane of Network Utility.

  • WAN Ethernet Port Settings?

    Under the Apple Airport Admin Utility/Internet tab there is a button marked WAN Ethernet Port. This button gives you several options, including "Automatic", and then four other options referring to what I guess are port speeds, and the terms "Half Duplex" and "Full Duplex". Any one have a clue to what these are/mean? What should I choose to maximize my Base Station?
    I'm running a LinkSys Cable Modem into my Base Station. Right now I'm supposed to be getting 8 MBps service thru Comcast. But I'm only maxing out at about 768 kbps.

    Those all have to do with ethernet port speed and transmission of data. Automatic means the ethernet port will try and sense what it is connected to and set the correct port speed and duplexing level. The duplexing means transmission of data. Half duplex will transmit data in just one direction at a time and full means that it will transmit and recieve at the same time. A walkie talkie is an example of half duplex and a telephone is an example of full.
    Usally setting it to automatic is the way to go but you want to make sure each side is the same. Make sure whatever your cable modem is set to (Automatic, 100/Full, 100/Half, etc.) is the same on the WAN port of the AE.
    If not you will receive CRC errors etc causing slowdowns and retransmission of data.

  • Ethernet port on 2010 iMac won't operate at Gigabit speed, but requires router to be set at 100 Base-T.

    For almost a month I have been experiencing internet connection dropouts with my vDSL line, which had previously been stable for about six weeks since I changed ISP. I have an initially wired setup, from the router to my Time Capsule WAN port and from there to my 27" iMac Ethernet port. I bought new Cat 6 cables on setup.
    During the router setup I was advised to set the active port at the Gigabit setting. Finally having discounted all other possibilities, the router manufacturer support engineer suggested I reset this back to the default 100 Base-T setting: and this has resulted in a stable connection once more.
    Surely my iMac should offer functionality at Gigabit Ethernet transfer speeds? Otherwise the Airport home network is dependent on what my computer's Ethernet port can manage.

    If you Google for non Flash speed test site you will find at least two, I have no idea how good they are hence not putting any links in the post.
    As for pin pointing the problem, the only way I know short of having access to the internals of the router and TC including firmware source and test equipment is by producing the fault and swopping the various pieces of equipment out. Having access to the internals is way beyond anything I can do and swopping the parts out seems expensive.
    From past experoence of Gigabit issuses I had it was usually down to cabling or faulty connections in the RJ45  sockets, this was quite common. As for the incompatibilty, one way to test is to put a 1Gb switch between the router and the TC.
    I would not presume either the router or cable are good until proved.
    There is always the possiblity that more than one piece of equipment is faulty, rare but I I have had it happen before.
    Not a lot else I can say, perhaps someone else as more thoughts and can help.

  • Ethernet port to 100 speed

    can we force a router ethernet port to run at 100 meg? as far as i know this runs at 10 meg. can i configure it to 100 meg and duplex to full so that it communicate with a switch

  • A way of doubling up the ethernet port?

    It's a PowerMac G4 gigabit ethernet dual 500MHz running OS9.2.2 & OSX with a laserwriter NT11 connected via an asante box into the ethernet port so that I can use the printer in both OSX & OS9. When I want to use the internet I have to disconnect the asante box in order to plug in the ethernet cable from the modem. Not very neat & the asante box doesn't like it much. How do I "double" the ethernet port so I can stay on the internet & keep the asante box on as well?

    a Hub is a dumb box. Wiggle signals on any port and it repeats the wiggles at every other port.
    So you just plug everything into a port on the Hub. The Cable modem goes into one port, the AsanteTalk goes into one port, and the Mac goes into one port. Whenever anybody wiggles their Ethernet signals, it gets repeated on all the other ports. Each smart device looks at the Addressing information on the front of each packet to decide whether this is a packet for me.
    A switch accepts valid Ethernet packets, and stores them momentarily, then forwards them. Initially, it broadcasts all packets on all ports. But it very quickly builds a simple routing table that tells it where devices with a certain address last acknowledged a packet, and can send it to (only) the right port. That reduces traffic, eliminates invalid packets, and can change the speeds between devices and negotiate for the fastest possible connection speed for each device -- mis-matched speeds are no problem.
    Again, you just plug a cable from each device into the switch.
    A router is like a switch, but it has one more port intended to connect only to your Internet connection (Cable Modem, DSL, FIOS, Satellite, whatever). Only packets that are going toward the Internet go onto its Internet (Wide Area Network or WAN) port. It acts as your agent on the Internet, and hides your real addresses from the rest of the Internet. It is needed when you have more than one computer to get onto the Internet at once.

  • How do I add an airport extreme to a cable modem with only one ethernet port, while keeping that port connected to my Mac?

    I have a mac pro connected by ethernet to a cable modem via ethernet.    There is only one ethernet port on the modem.   
    I want to keep the Mac connected via ethernet for speed.    Is there a way that I can add an airport extreme to this set up - for my ipad and roku, and for guests to use - or do I need to buy a router to put between the modem and the mac?
    If I need a router, what kind?

    The modem connects to the WAN "O" port on an AirPort Extreme router.
    The Mac Pro connects to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme router.
    Or if you do not need the ability to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the router, you can save a bit by using an AirPort Express.
    The modem connects to the WAN "O" port, the Mac Pro connects to the LAN <-> port
    Either the AirPort Extreme router or AirPort Express router will allow up to 50 wireless device to connect.
    There are many other wireless modems offered by other manufacturers as well.

  • How can I get on the internet with my newly purchased used G5 Power Mac if my ethernet port failed?

    We just bought our son a used G5 Power Mac, but when we got it home and tried to hook it up to the internet, no luck. We changed ethernet calbes, tried plugging directly into wall cable (by-passing router), even tried to do manual config, but no luck. I took it to the Genius Bar today and they said the ethernet plug was broken, and they did not have anything for a "vintage" machine like this.
    The Genius Bar tech told me to buy a USB Network Adaptor, however no one (Best Buy, Radio Shack, even searched the internet) seems to have them for Mac. What can I do to get this puppy connected to the internet and how much would it cost? Did we get screwed?

  • How do I get Ethernet Link Speed stuck at 10 Mbit/s to 100?

    I've 100 Mps Internet service.  My iMac limits ethernet to 10 mps, although the specs say it should be capable of at least 100 mps.  A PC connected to the same Time Capsule gets 100 mps.  My network utility claims the link speed is only 10.  If I try to correct the speed manually, it claims the ethernet cord is not plugged in.  I'm using CAT 5e cord.  How can I fix this?

  • How do you make use of the 2nd Ethernet port on the Mac Pro?

    My Mac Pro's ethernet port connects it to the local network and the internet.
    Under what circumstances would I make use of the 2nd port?
    Are there any settings I'd have to set up in system preferences to make sure one is used for some things while the other is used for different things?
    I'm asking because we might be making some changes to our network. We have a printer with a Fiery RIP and I'm pretty much the only one who prints to it. I was wondering if we could/should set up a direct, dedicated connection so that network traffic won't bog down print jobs.

    The main use for that port today is to create a subnetwork for Internet Sharing. Software inside the Mac can act as a Router and provides new DHCP Addresses for the subnetwork. In general, the devices on the subnetwork would be inaccessible from anywhere else, due to Network Address Translation.
    If you are concerned about heavy network traffic, consider upgrading your Switches (not Routers) to Gigabit Ethernet speeds and using Jumbo frames. (Routers are not involved in peer-to-peer transfers such as Printing when no Address Translation is involved.)
    If you have an Industrial Router, you can combine the two Ethernet ports into one composite link for faster-than-Gigabit effective speeds, but it requires a special Router not generally available.

  • I have a iMac g4 swivel and it seems that the ethernet port and the optical drive are not working.

    Is there any troubleshooting I can try, short of replacing everything?
    I really love this version of the iMac and want to use it in place of my eMac for some home business inventory and printing work.
    I need the ethernet to work because the printer can only connect that way.  It's a great laserjet from HP (1998 version) and it works like a champ.
    As for the disc drive... I would love to install office or iwork but as I said nothing seems to mount.  I also can't upgrade it to Tiger.  It's running Panther and I can live with that I suppose.
    I have wondered if I could exchange parts from the eMac (Motherboard, Optical Drive, Hard Drive) since  its bulkyness takes up so much room.
    Any ideas?

    1) Do you have a router?  Do you communicate to the internet via wifi?
    connect the printer to a router with an ethernet port. This will be an input eithernet port.
    You may need to change ip addresses on your printer or on your network.
    2) usb to ethernet dongle

    verify that the dongle will work on your machine.  Any drivers needed?
    3) You can firewire to for TCP/IP ( ethernet) to comunicate between macs.  Connect your printer to your macbook. Use firewire to communicate between macs.  Enable printer sharing.

  • Quantum Gateway G1100 router - can't get ethernet ports to work?!

    I just got a Quantum Gateway G1100 router, and the improvement in wireless networking speed over my old Actiontec router is as advertised.
    However, I find that I can’t get any of my wired devices to connect to the router via any of the four yellow Ethernet ports on the back of the unit. I can only connect to this thing wirelessly. Hooking up my PC to the router with an Ethernet cable gets me no connection, not even to the router itself at 192.168.1.1 (or myfiosgateway.com).
    I have a PC, a printer, a network drive/media server and a Roku all wired to my router, none of them are detected. I can connect my PC and Roku wirelessly, but the network drive and printer must be wired.
    The instructions act like it should be plug-and-go for the Ethernet ports, which has always been my experience with other routers over 10+ years of using Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Actiontec, etc., units. Usually it’s the wireless network config that has hiccups. This is a first for me.
    Am I missing something obvious? I’ve swapped back in my old Actiontec router just to check things out, and the wired devices all see my home network and the internet as well.
    Interestingly, if I go to the “My Network” tab on the router, I see one and only one Ethernet device. I don’t know what it is, and it is labeled “Active”, but it’s sitting on 192.168.1.4, which is the static IP address I’d configured my network drive to grab, yet it is not the network drive (any attempt to connect to it just times out).

    it does give me an IP address for the ethernet connection - 192.168.1.151 - that is different from the one for the wireless connection, which is 192.168.1.152.  I can see both of these listed on the router's connections as well, in the My Network tab, if I Show All.   But if I disable the wireless, my PC cannot ping either iteself or the router at 192.168.1.1.
    In fact, I can ping 192.168.1.152 (the wireless connection) but never 192.168.1.151.
    There is no IP address for my other wired devices, except that I do see 192.168.1.4 appearing, which is the static address of the network drive device.  But I cannot connect to it (there is a web and media server running on the device which ordinarily pops up a config screen at 192.168.1.4).

    Go into any large computer store and ask for a switch.. 8 ports is usually the best value.. 5 is a couple to short and you lose one with the connection.. it is much better to plug all the items into the switch.. and just have one cable running to the TC from switch.. although that is not necessity.. it keeps speeds up for local LAN.
