Event Day problem in iMovie '08

Hello all. I was hoping someone here can fix my importing problem. First, I'd like to say I'm new to importing video and iMovie '08. I have a Sony HDR-SR5 HD camera which is full so I need to get the videos off of it to an external drive. I have successfully imported some of the video - straight to my laptop - and then put the video on the external drive. I am importing them under the days date for a title, have checked the box "split days into new events", and selected 1920x1080 video.
My first "batch" when imported into iMovie, under the "Event Library" on the left on the clips, listed my title(the date) and under that listed all the days in order. Almost like they were separate videos. For example:
4-25-10
4-25-10 Day 1
4-25-10 Day 2
And so on....
So when I click on each day, I can see what was recorded that day. So all is good. When I plug in the external drive it backs-up all the video just like iMovie has them organized. All good again.
Now, my laptop hard drive is full after the import so I have to erase what has been imported so I cant import another "batch". Well, I go through the exact motions like the first time but now whenever I import, in the "Event Library", all that it lists is the title (again, the date) and it doesn't separate them into days under my title like the first time. Now, they are split into days on the right where you see the actual clips, but not on the left. Frustrating!
How can I get them separated in the "Event Library" by days like my first import? It makes the videos when putting them on the external drive much easier to watch and be organized.
Switch gears, I would prefer when importing to go straight to the external drive. In the iMovie '08 tutorial video, it says that if you have an external drive to select it when the importing window comes up. Well, when my drive is connected, it doesn't show up.
Is there a way to go straight to the external drive?
Thanks you very much in advance for any help. I'm not new to computers but I have yet to do any importing of videos. What I have is very important and I don't want to screw it up!

It seems in some cases that the issue is resolved by updating to 10.5.3. The weird thing is, is that some people are still having problems in 10.5.3. and also exist with people using 10.4.10.
The same problem with different system, and nobody knows the cause...

    I have no problems copying iMovie Events from one Mac to another, however, how can I copy iMovie Projects from one Mac to another?  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you.

    This should give you some good insight, I'd probably store them on an External HD on the old machine and then just drag and drop to the new machine.

    I have a problem with Imovie. Just brought an macbook 15 retina , iLife install and Imovie was working. I than did a data migration from my old macbook pro and now it crashes on start up. I tried to re-install from app store but no option to re-install, just installed and it greyed out.

    Well, my two-month-old MBP has no qualms about booting from a no-name external USB HD I put together...
    Given that is is a common point of failure, I would imagine a large Apple Store should keep a stock of HD's on hand.
    Now since you're a bit desperate and the genie pops up til Saturday and you seem to be the enterprising kind, let's try an experiment: if you have room enough in the external HD and assuming it isn't a Time Machine volume, why don't you plug it in, stick the Install CD and see if the installer lets you select the external drive as the install target. If you can install Leopard on it, on top of the backup without reformatting, and the Mac can boot from the drive afterwards, at least you would have some functionality restored and would be able to pull your stuff from the internal HD. Apple says booting from USB drives is not supported but that does not equate to not possible; some brands do work. Risks? Always. You can always lose your backup. Like I said, a challenge for an enterprising gal....
    Next time around, consider having a bootable external clone at hand for rainy days. I keep three myself...
    P.S. Since I'll be in the Dallas-FW area in late June, I can volunteer with the confetti....

  • Problem with IMovie on Mountain Lion

    IMovie crashed

    Hi
    Hard to say Why - but see if this helps
    When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
    ( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
    _ now select all five options presented
    _ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
    (I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

  • Flip Video camera & problems with iMovie 08

    If you are having problems with iMovie and Flip Video, here is the Flip Video email response on 27 May 2008:
    Hello,
    Thank you for your response.
    We are not authorized to support third party applications, which is why we do not provide specific instructions regarding iMovie or any other third party application. We only support the Flip and the Flip program, while offering suggestions regarding other programs.
    The Apple website also offers Perian as a workaround regarding audio on the Tiger operating system with the latest QuickTime. The latest QuickTime upgrade didn’t allow for audio playback of AVI files, which is why Perian is now offered as a work around by us and by Apple.
    It seems as though you are able to playback your videos, as well as use them in outside applications. If this is not the case, and you are having issues using your Flip video or your Flip video program, feel free to contact us further.
    Thank you,

    This is my email to Flip Video on 26 May 2008:
    My MAC Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie, and then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOV files but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and longer time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVI files had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than the MOV movie. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. Flip says Apple is aware of the problem.
    My MAC PowerPc G4 has performed well in the past two months when working with the Flip Video camera. So, at Flip Video’s suggestion I upgraded the operating system to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. Flip Video says their camera works with OS 10.5. Once OS 10.5 was uploaded I soon discovered that iMovie 08 would not operate on my PowerPc G4, 1.86 MHz. The speed requirement for iMovie 08 is 1.9 GHz.
    At this point of “spinning my wheels for nearly a month” with this Flip Video camera, I decided to purchase a new iMac. On May 2, 2008, I walked out of the Apple Store in Walnut Creek with the new iMac 20-inch: 2.66GHz. Now the Flip video camera should work and all my video problems solved. However, this was not to be.
    When I attempted to Import Flip Video AVI and MOV files into iMovie 08 the files were “grayed out” and would not Import. None of my previous Flip Video files would Import. I tried making new Flip Video movies, they also would not Import into iMovie 08.
    At another Apple Store, the tech suggested I download the previous version of iMovie HD. I did this and with hours of working through the different Export options I was able to create movies to post again on youTube. However, the picture quality of the newer iMovies has never approached the quality of my last post before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. Remember my problems started with QT 7.4.5. Well, my new iMac came with QT 7.4.1, I have not Uploaded QT 7.4.5 and won’t until Flip Video fixes this problem.
    Examples of my Flip Video movies can be viewed on youTube at: sffoggydays. The last video with excellent picture quality was posted 6 Apr 2008 titled “A Day at the San Francisco Zoo, Chapter Nine, L-Taravel Ride to BART.” This video was made in iMovie and Exported before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. All the youTube Flip Videos made after 6 Apr 2008 have poor picture quality.
    It is time for Flip Video camera to stop “passing the buck” to Apple. When manufactures of operating system such as Apple and Microsoft create newer and upgraded systems, it is the responsibility of the manufactures of applications to redo their programs for operating on the new systems. Here is where Flip Video is not accepting this responsibility to Mac users of their camera. The Flip Video application/codex/drivers need to be updated in order to fix the following problems:
    - No sound on AVI files in QT 7.4.5
    - No Import of AVI and MOV files in iMovie 08
    - Poor picture quality for youTube in Export of iMovie HD
    I like my Flip Video camera, want to continue making movies for youTube, and recommending the camera to others. The Flip Video camera people need to fix these problems for Mac users.

    Hi!
    I agree 100%!
    I also purchased the Flip Video - was thrilled to see that they worked with Apple computers. I made several movies with it when I had my PowerBook G4. I went on a great vacation & took several once in a lifetime videos. Got home & couldn't wait to put them in my iMoive -06, burn them on my iDVD and sent them to several family members & friends. Before I got the chance, I had my system updater tell me that there was a new version to QT. GREAT, I thought, just in time for my vacation videos. Like you, after the QuickTime upgrade, I got video, but no sound. I was SICK about it! I also wrote to the Flip people & got a response somewhat like yours. I left the videos on my Flip which left no room for any others, but I didn't want to take the chance of losing them. After reading from Flip that it would work with OS 10.5 system, I talked myself into getting a new MacBook Pro. Came with all the upgrades iLife -08 and the OS 10.5.2 OK...finally, after months of stressing over losing the vacation videos, I had all I needed to save them! Of course the $2,000.00 price tag hurt a bit, but I deserve a new computer.
    Well...I STILL can't get my priceless vacation videos edited and burned! I tried downloading 2 different programs that were supposed to help convert my Flip movies to something that would work, but they haven't. I could get it to work on my desktop with QT, but what good is that?? I want to make DVD's to send to others & save for my grandkids (if I ever am lucky enough to get some!)
    I'm TOTALLY disgusted & feel I've wasted my money on the Flip Camera (that at one time I loved & was seriously considering giving them as gifts) the $2,000.00 on a new computer (that even though I do deserve, didn't REALLY need one yet!) AND I still have vacation videos that I can't share!
    So... I agree! Flip should honor their word that is printed on the box & MAKE it work with all Apple computers. Surely they can find a fix!
    TOTALLY disgusted with the whole FLIP/APPLE mess!
    Oh, Flip also said they 'heard' that QuickTime Pro would work with iMovie -08 - although they haven't actually tested it themselves. NO THANKS!!! I've got WAY too much money invested in this stupid Flip camera!

  • Audio problem in iMovie HD 6 transitions

    Hi,
    Has anyone encountered the following problem in iMovie HD 6? If so, how do you correct it?
    I added a "fade in" transition at the beginning of a clip. Now, as the audio and video fade in, the audio is very choppy until the transition ends. Same problem with a fade out.
    The clip itself is fine. I tried deleting and re-applying the transitions.
    I've had no problems with iMovie HD previously.

    I have not encountered that problem. But it's common for little glitches like that to occur occasionally. Preferences and permissions can get corrupted. Your problem might be project related and not occur in other projects. (You can do a short test project to find out.) In any event, it probably will not appear in the project when you burn it to a DVD. For the heck of it, you might try doing a quick share to iDVD and playback your project there.
    When little glitches like this develop, it often helps to delete preferences and then do a permissions repair. To delete preferences, close iMovie and trash the file named com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferenes. Then do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac. This is found in the Utilties folder. In the left side of the Disk Utility window, select your Mac HD icon and then click on the Repair Permissions button. It takes about 3 or 4 minutes for your Mac to repair permissions. Once that is done, relaunch iMovie. iMovie will create a new .plist file to replace the one that you deleted.
    Now see if you still have the problem.

  • Trouble moving events or projects in iMovie 11 to ext. hard drive

    I'm trying to move iMovie 11 events (or projects) to my external hard drive but keep getting this message:  This file could not be copied:  /Users/hopkinssm/Movies/iMovie Events.localized/Conducting_2_14/iMovie Thumbnails/clip-2013-02-14 09;37;20  (File not found).
    I have done this in the past with no problem.  I've looked at the instructions again to make sure I was doing it right.  I know the files are on my hard drive because iMovie is able to access them and will allow me to view, edit, etc.

  • Day events & day notes "double spaced" in printing

    Since updating clients to Oracle Calendar v10, day events & day notes are doubled spaced on printing. Formerly, while users could list four or five events or notes below the day in question (on week view), now they can only print three; more than three and an overflow page is generated.
    I just tested, and the problem persists with 10.1.2 (MacOS X 10.4.3). Is this a deliberate change?

    Hi Guys, actually there's a SAP note,
    https://websmp230.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lcyZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=1268743
    It's happening in some weird moments, it's absolutely random and is happening in 2005 and 2007.
    Well, by now a lot of flags to control this, by the way in PL44 and PL46 are not listed this note as solved.

  • Delicate ProgressMonitor/ event handling problem

    Hi,
    I have a delicate ProgressMonitor / event handling problem.
    There exists some solution on similiar problems here in the forums, but no solution to my special problem, hope anybody can help me out.
    I have a rather big project, an applet, that I've written a separate JarLoader class that will load specific jar's if the ClassLoader encounter a unloaded class, all ok so far.
    But, during loading, I would like to display a ProgressBar. And here is the problem. If my custom ClassLoader intercepts a findClass -request that needs to load the class from a jar from a normal thread, this is no problem, but if the ClassLoader intercepts a findClass that needs loading a jar when inside the EventQueue -thread, this is becomming tricky!
    The catch is that an event posted on the EventQueue finally needs a class that needs to be loaded, but I cannot dispatch a thread to do this and end that particular event before the class itself is loaded.
    So how do I hold the current EventQueue -event needing a jar -load, Pop up a ProgressBar, then process events in the EventQueue to display the ProgressBar and update repaints in it? then return from the event that now have loaded needed class-files.
    I've tried a tip described earlier in the forums by trying to handle events with this code when loading the Jar:
        /** process any waiting events - use during long operations
         * to update UI */
        static public void doEvents() {
            // need to derive from EventQueue otherwise
            // don't have access to protected method dispatchEvent()
            class EvtQueue extends java.awt.EventQueue {
                public void doEvents() {
                    Toolkit toolKit = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
                    EventQueue evtQueue = toolKit.getSystemEventQueue();
                    // loop whilst there are events to process
                    while (evtQueue.peekEvent() != null) {
                        try {
                            // if there are then get the event
                            AWTEvent evt = evtQueue.getNextEvent();
                            // and dispatch it
                            super.dispatchEvent(evt);
                        catch (java.lang.InterruptedException e) {
                            // if we get an exception in getNextEvent()
                            // do nothing
            // create an instance of our new class
            EvtQueue evtQueue = new EvtQueue();
            // and call the doEvents method to process the events.
            evtQueue.doEvents();
        }Then, the loader checks
    java.awt.EventQueue.isDispatchThread()to see if its' inside the eventqueue, and runs doEvents after updating the ProgressMonitor with new setProgress and setNote values.
    More precise;
    The loader is loading the jar like this:
    (this is pseudo code, not really usable, but outlines the vital parts)
    public void load() {
      monitor = new ProgressMonitor(null, "Loading " + jarName, ""+jarSize + " bytes", 0, jarSize);
      monitor.setMillisToDecideToPopup(0);
      monitor.setMillisToPopup(0);
      // reading jar info code here ...
      JarEntry zip = input.getNextJarEntry();
      for (;zip != null;) {
         // misc file handling here... total = current bytes read
         monitor.setProgress(total);
         monitor.setNote(note);
         if (java.awt.EventQueue.isDispatchThread()) {
            doEvents();
         zip = input.getNextJarEntry();
      monitor.close();
    }When debugging doEvents(), there is never any events pending in peekEvents(), even if I tries to put a invokeLater() to run the setProgress on the monitor, why? If it had worked, the doEvents() code would have saved my day...
    So, this is where I'm totally stuck...

    Just want to describe how I did this using spin from http://spin.sourceforge.net
    This example is not pretty, but it can probably help others understanding spin. Cancelling the ProgressMonitor is not implemented, but can easily be done by checking on ProgressMonitor.isCanceled() in
    the implementation code.
    First, I create a bean for displaying and run a ProgressMonitor:
    Spin requires an Interface and an Implementation, but that's just nice programming practice :-)
    import java.util.*;
    public interface ProgressMonitorBean {
        public void start(); // start spinning
        public void cancel(); // cancel
        public int getProgress(); // get the current progress value
        public void setProgress(int progress); // set progress value
        public void addObserver(Observer observer); // observer on the progressValue
    }Then, I created the implementation:
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.ProgressMonitor;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class ProgressMonitorBeanImpl extends Observable implements ProgressMonitorBean {
        private ProgressMonitor monitor;
        private boolean cancelled;
        private int  progress = 0;
        private int  currentprogress = 0;
        public ProgressMonitorBeanImpl(Component parent, Object message, String note, int min, int max) {
            monitor = new ProgressMonitor(parent, message, note, min, max);
            monitor.setMillisToDecideToPopup(0);
            monitor.setMillisToPopup(0);
        public void cancel() {
            monitor.close();
        public void start() {
            cancelled = false;
            progress = 0;
            currentprogress = 0;
            while (progress < m_cMonitor.getMaximum()) {
                try {
                    synchronized (this) {
                        wait(50); // Spinning with 50 ms delay
                    if (progress != currentprogress) { // change only when different from previous value
                        setChanged();
                        notifyObservers(new Integer(progress));
                        monitor.setProgress(progress);
                        currentprogress = progress;
                } catch (InterruptedException ex) {
                    // ignore
                if (cancelled) {
                    break;
        public int getProgress() {
            return progress;
        public void setProgress(int progress) {
            this.progress = progress;
    }in my class/jarloader code, something like this is done:
    public void load() {
      ProgressMonitorBean monitor = (ProgressMonitorBean)Spin.off(new ProgressMonitorBeanImpl(null, "Loading " + url,"", 0, jarSize));
      Thread t = new Thread() {
        public void run() {
          JarEntry zip = input.getNextJarEntry();
          for (;zip != null;) {
            // misc file handling here... progress = current bytes read
         monitor.setProgress(progress);
      t.start(); // fire off loadin into own thread to do time consuming work
      monitor.start(); // this will spin events on monitor and block until progress = max
      monitor.cancel(); // Just make sure ProgressMonitor is closed
    }The beautiful thing here is that Spin is taking care of weither the load() is inside the dispatch thread or not, making the code much simpler and cleaner to understand.
    The ProgressMonitorBeanImplementation could been made much nicer and more complete, but I was in a hurry to check if it worked out. And it did! This will be applied on a lot of gui -components that blocks the event-queue in our project, making it much more responsive.
    Hope this will help others in similiar situations! Thanks again svenmeier for pointing me to the spin -project.

  • What is Event queue problem?

    HI,
    I have come across JSF document, they mentioned that Event queue
    Problem ins SUN's JSF implementation. what is that?

    You're going to have to be a little more specific.

  • Problem with imovie

    Just bought my first mac. Got couple problems with imovie. First - i have camcoder with dvd. imovie can't import. If i have not made disk finalization - imovie shows blank disk (unreadable). When i make finalization imovie shows attached dvd, but refuses to import vob files.
    Second problem - i converted this dvd with ffmpegX to avi. Again imovie refuses to perform file import. File-import movies shows my avi files unclickable.

    The only video you can use on iOS version of iMovie, is video you take on the iPad using the iPad camera or any taken on any other device with the iOS software 4.3 or higher.  See TS3719 - iMovie for iOS: Some video clips do not appear in the Video browser

  • GUI event handling problems appear in 1.4.1 vs. 1.3.1?

    Hi,
    Has anyone else experienced strange event handling problems when migrating from 1.3.1 to 1.4.1? My GUI applications that make use of Swing's AbstractTableModel suddenly don't track mouse and selection events quickly anymore. Formerly zippy tables are now very unresponsive to user interactions.
    I've run the code through JProbe under both 1.3 and 1.4 and see no differences in the profiles, yet the 1.4.1 version is virtually unusable. I had hoped that JProbe would show me that some low-level event-handling related or drawing method was getting wailed on in 1.4, but that was not the case.
    My only guess is that the existing installation of 1.3.1 is interfering with the 1.4.1 installation is some way. Any thoughts on that before I trash the 1.3.1 installation (which I'm slightly reluctant to do)?
    My platform is Windows XP Pro on a 2GHz P4 with 1GB RAM.
    Here's my test case:
    import javax.swing.table.AbstractTableModel;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class VerySimpleTableModel extends AbstractTableModel
    private int d_rows = 0;
    private int d_cols = 0;
    private String[][] d_data = null;
    public VerySimpleTableModel(int rows,int cols)
    System.err.println("Creating table of size [" + rows + "," + cols +
    d_rows = rows;
    d_cols = cols;
    d_data = new String[d_rows][d_cols];
    int r = 0;
    while (r < d_rows){
    int c = 0;
    while (c < d_cols){
    d_data[r][c] = new String("[" + r + "," + c + "]");
    c++;
    r++;
    System.err.println("Done.");
    public int getRowCount()
    return d_rows;
    public int getColumnCount()
    return d_cols;
    public Object getValueAt(int rowIndex, int columnIndex)
    return d_data[rowIndex][columnIndex];
    public static void main(String[] args)
    System.err.println( "1.4..." );
    JFrame window = new JFrame();
    window.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    JPanel panel = new JPanel();
    Dimension size = new Dimension(500,500);
    panel.setMinimumSize(size);
    panel.setMaximumSize(size);
    JTable table = new JTable(new VerySimpleTableModel(40,5));
    panel.add(table);
    window.getContentPane().add(panel);
    window.setSize(new Dimension(600,800));
    window.validate();
    window.setVisible(true);
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi,
    I've fixed the problem by upgrading to 1.4.1_02. I was on 1.4.1_01.
    I did further narrow down the symptoms more. It seemed the further the distance from the previous mouse click, the longer it would take for the table row to highlight. So, clicking on row 1, then 2, was much faster than clicking on row 1, then row 40.
    If no one else has seen this problem -- good! I wouldn't wish the tremendous waste of time I've had on anyone!
