Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes.  The color wheel comes on and My work stops.  I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot.  I have to shut the computer down the hard way!  when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow.  I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix.  It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything.  My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them.  I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem.  I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing!  Any ideas?

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues...  open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips

  • I have a 27" imac. If I log on to yahoo mail, the color wheel comes up and i cant check email or send. It only happens as soon as i log into my yahoo mail! Please help someone.

I am new to Using Apple. I've had my Imac for about 5 months, Recently when I log on to my Yahoo mail, if I click on any of my email, or if I try to compose an email, the color wheel turns on and it just freezes up, I am not able to view my email. This only happens with my Yahoo mail.  Someone please help? Any Suggestions?

    Hi Lizzy..
If you are using web based email (accessing from Safari), from the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab.
    Click: Show Cookies
    Delete all Yahoo cookies.
Now from the menu bar again click Safari / Empty Cache.
Restart your Mac, launch Safari. Try Yahoo.
If the problem persists, there's a better way to access your Yahoo mail without a browser.
Launch the Mail application. Either from your Dock or Applications folder.
From the Mail menu bar click Mail / Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Click + under the Accounts window on the left.
Type in your name, Yahoo email address and password.
    Click: Create
No more having to use Safari or any browser to access your Yahoo mail. Just click the Mail icon in the Dock.

  • Since I installed OSX Lion on my MacBook Pro, sometimes after login, the colored wheel keeps turning and I can't do anything

Since I installed OSX Lion on my MacBook Pro, sometimes after login, the colored wheel keeps turning and I can't do anything. When I click on some icon or in the menu, no happens.
After a long time (more than 1 hour), I decide to switch off my Mac holding the button down and when I boot and log in again, it works normally.
Remark: When I logoff, I do not ask to keep my open programs for the next session.
    I have a MacBook Pro 2010 with 4GB Ram.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previous Sh' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

Could be systems logs or some other system file growing.
Use OmniDiskSweeper or DaisyDisk to map what's being used.

  • Whenever I press spacebar to playback my video project in final cut pro X, the color wheel pops up and freezes the computer. Doesn't matter what computer I use. Why and how do I fix this?

Like I said, I'm doing a simple video and have finally made some progress in editing. All of a sudden, when I try to replay the video the color wheel pops up and nothing works. It just keeps spinning and spinning with no end. I end up having to force quit the program. When I restart it the same thing happens. I've tried it on 3 different computers and the results have been the same. I've read that perhaps the software needs to be updated through the mac store, I did that to no avail. I also read that perhaps the preferences for the project/final cut pro need to be reset. I downloaded a program that is supposed to do this for me but it didn't work I also went into Preferences in Final Cut and hit reset under editing tab which also did not work. I"m really frustrated about this and I"m getting paid for this video. This needs to be resolved ASAP.  Thanks in advance for the help: ask any questions.

Please give complete details of your system and the media and the project properties.

  • I currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application. HELP!!

i currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application.
it is showing all my existing photos but will not let me click on any of them, nor will it allow me to import any new photos into iPhoto.
I am really worried that I cannot access all of my photos and even more worried as I need to back them up!!
    HELP!!

    Try repair the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

  • Why does the color wheel come up when I   I can't get rid of it.

Why does the color wheel come up when I try to open an email? I can't get rid of it unless I sign in again!

The spinning beach ball of death (SBBOD) can be caused by many things. Common causes are not enough RAM, insufficient HD space or another process using a lot of the CPU's power. You can open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) for many things including the %CPU column to see if there is an app using a large %CPU. Also click the System Memory tab and see how much FREE RAM it shows. As a general rule your system should have 500MB or more available.
Finally I'd recommend reading and using the Spinning Beach Ball of Death article for additonal troubleshooting steps.

  • Why is it taking forever for my pages to load and then if I search the rainbow wheel come up and goes on forever?

The rainbow wheel pops up and goes on and on everytime I try to type in a search or if I'm on a page and move around it, it starts up and goes on and on.

Does this only occur while the computer is connected to the Internet or also while it's offline?

  • Since I purchased Mountain Lion my computer has slowed considerably - how do i speed it up again?

I purchased Mountain Lion around a month and a half ago. Since then, my computer has slowed considerably--like i could go get a cup of coffee while the page loads like old-school. Does anyone out there have any suggestions how to fix this?

How much RAM? How much available disk space?
Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.

  • Sept '06 black macbook w/ os x lion, enters desktop and the color wheel starts spinning and never goes away...no function.

I have OS X Lion on a black macbook (bought 9/06). OS X has been on it for over two weeks, no further changes have been made. Updates were all current as of two days ago and thankfully it is backed up. This macbook is being used for anesthesia school and I HAVE to get it up and running again quickly. Typically I would insert the OS startup disk and hold 'C', but in this case Lion is from the App store. What do I do now? Need help quickly if anyone can. Thanks a million!

Hi Lex, thanks for the response. It actually is a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo processor. SInce my post, it "spontaneously" resolved, however it is incredibly slow anytime I use any program from Microsoft Office '11 or iWork '11. I have the maximum 4GB of RAM and I have 35GB of free space on the hard drive so it didn't seem to me that it should be so slow. I believe I am going to run the disk utility to attempt to fix anything that may be found wrong and if that doesn't work, I will just wipe the driver and start over from scratch. Thanks for the post!

  • As my g5 fan spins, so does the color wheel... and then I begin to cuss..

Logic has crashed YET again.. but its just sitting here doing nothing...
not offering me a chance to save...
    just sitting here..
    and I am mad.
is there any way to force this B to save now before I force quit .. ?????????????????????????
    -p

I don't really agree here, dave.. the thing is, it's not as simple as saying that in a general sense, pushing the machine too hard is going to systematically cause undesired freezes or crashes. I've worked on many logic setups over the years, and many of those setups have been rock solid to the point that you could absolutely pin the system right to the edge and the worst you'd ever get was stopped playback with a CPU overload.
all it takes is one element of your system to not play nice and it can bring the whole house down with it. and yes in some cases, it can be a combination of elements that, while not being buggy in and of themselves, may just make the computer throw in the towel when it's pushed a bit hard.
but really the only way to resolve situations like this is unfortunately the long and boring process of careful elimination... working through the different plug ins and other installed items methodically to uncover which ones may be the culprit(s) or at least, potential contributors to bringing things down. this also involves examining crash logs when you get them for any evidence they may show, visiting developer websites, forums and knowledge bases to check for any reported issues that may be a clue as to what is happening on your system.
none of it is easy, none of it is a quick fix, but sadly it's the reality when it comes to working with complex pro software that relies on many interdependent elements such as 3rd party add ons.
one thing that I often suggest to busy working composers/producers, is that they hire a tech support assistant or consultant. you don't need someone on a payroll.. but if you don't have the time, the inclination or the technical savvy to really dig deep into this stuff, you can bring in someone that can really put in the hours to fault-find on your behalf. money well-spent, if you hire someone good.

  • My browser keeps pausing and giving me the color wheel every few seconds

Whenever I'm using Firefox my browser pauses every few seconds and if I am typing something nothing comes out, or the color wheel comes out (I'm on a Mac), if I'm watching a video it pauses every few seconds... it's sort of maddening. I do have about 20 tabs open at a time, I don't know if that is what causes it. It doesn't seem to happen when I am in Safari.

"the spinning wait cursor is displayed automatically by the window server when an application cannot handle all of the events it receives. If an application does not respond for about 2 to 4 seconds, the spinning wait cursor appears."
