Ever since my upgrade to lion 10.7.3, and iCloud, my macbook is running extremely slow. What can I do? It doesn't seem like my contacts are pushing through to the computer from iPhone.
Then your basic issues are: too little RAM, incompatible software, dysfunctional installation.
Add more RAM or kill as many programs that you use until the computer is running normally.
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps. Upgrade any old software.
Reinstall OS X:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Alternatively, see:

I recently upgraded to Lion on an iMac and I am trying to run Garageband but get message telling me that the instrument library is invalid and I should choose a valid Instrument Folder or re-install Garageband. Where do I find such a folder?
Thanks very much. Yes, I am using the installer files and serial number from the URL you referenced above. I have spent many hours trying to get it to work. I would love some help!!
The problem is that the instructions that come in the pdf with the downloaded files do not work, because the files that download from that page do not have the names referred to in the pdf, and most of the things that are referred to in the instructions do not happen. Here is what actually happened.
When I downloaded the files from the website, these are the files that downloaded:
I double-clicked each one and they extracted into two different folders.
Then I read a message on the forum that said to move all the extractred files into the same folder, so I moved all files into one file at C:\Creative Suite CS2\Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 as was pictured in the forum message. Here are screen shots showing all of the files in that folder I have now:
So then I double clicked the "Setup" file and I got this error message:
So then I tried to install the programs separately from the installer inside the folders Photoshop and Illustrator. I got this far and entered the serial number from the website:
But then I got this error message, even though I was using the files and serial number exactly from the website:
I tried both photoshop and illustrator and the same thing happened.
(I also looked at Solution 2 that you mentioned above but I don't have anything called VCOM on the computer. Also the error message that I got is not that one.)
I think I really need a set of instructions that lists the steps in order to do, but based on the files that actually download from the website and what happens when you extract the files. I feel as if I have all of the proper files but it still doesn't work.
Thank you very much! -
how can someone use a stolen iphone? does erasing the phone (which I feel like I should do) make it easier for the thief to use the iphone? If I don't erase it, it doesn't seem like anyone should be able to use the phone because of my password. Also, is it possible to retrieve anything that has been sent to the phone (i.e. text messages) since it was stolen through icloud? The "find my iphone" app says the device is offline but it rings when I call my number -- any idea how that would be the case? Thanks!!
You have a password, so good move on your part. Whether you erase it or the thief does, they still get to use the iPhone as theirs. Which is more important (pick one), protecting your data or punishing the thief?
Ringing occurs at the carrier. Chances are you're going to voicemail after only two or three rings. If you have an iCloud backup also a good move. Re-read my question in the first paragraph. -
Ever since I upgraded to Lion, Time Machine has failed
The subject line says it all - ever since I upgraded my early-2011 MBP to Lion, every few weeks it announces that my TM backup is corrupt and it has to start a new one. So, I let it build a new back up - but then, a few weeks later, the problem recurs.
Looking through this and other sites, I see lots of people complaining about this with both Lion and Snow Leopard - but no explanations about why it happens.
Is there any logfile I should be looking at to determine what's causing the problem with my backups? If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "backupd" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. Post the messages from the last backup, beginning with "Starting standard backup."
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context. -
Macbook Pro running extremely slow since updating to Yosemite
Hello All,
I am new to the community and I'm hoping your pooled expertise can assist me with my issues. I went ahead and posted the results of my diagnostic scan below. My main concerns are that my Macbook Pro is now extremely slow after OSX updates. Also, laptop is running extremely hot to touch. I have mentioned other ongoing issues. I offer thanks in advance for any assistance.
Problem description:
Macbook Pro 13":
Purchased in mid-2010.
Most Recent Issue (Main Concern):
(1) I recently updated OS X from Mountain Lion to Maverick. Computer began running extremely slow and “jerky.”
(1.1) Shortly after this I updated to OS X Yosemite. Computer runs, and types, even slower than before.
Ongoing Issues (Greater than one year):
(1) Extremely short battery life (may last two hours on full charge)
(2) Macbook runs extremely hot to touch (fan runs continuously but can’t begin to keep it cool)
(3) SD Card reader doesn't recognize/open an SD card when inserted.
Lex Cschellings Requested the Following:
No obvious elements in the list.
This may well be a dying disk and/or a very bad battery.
Do following:
make a new etrecheck list and in the problem description put what Applications->Utilities->SystemInformation says about the battery (under the Power heading in the left panel): give cycle count and battery condition.
Then post the link in a new thread.
In the meantime the crash report is probably a French Dictionary issue (font? garcon garçon) you have installed, uninstall that and see if it happens again.

I made an account just for this. My macbook pro is extremely slow, but only some of the time. When I normally browse it isn't that bad, but using any flash application or playing any game results in a 100-400 (sometimes 350%) CPU usage of the flashplayer. When I play a game something called kernel_task or mdworker take up a lot as well. Here's my EtreCheck, if it helps.

Can't sync TO the computer from iPhone so going to lose 30 albums! Help!
I have an old iPhone 4 which I used to sync with my old Acer laptop. The laptop died and I bought a new Macbook Air (love it!). I copied music from the old laptop to the Macbook but for some reason lots of albums didn't copy across. It's mainly albums that I had uploaded from CD. It didn't matter as I only listened to music via the phone but I now have an iPhone 6 and I need to get all these albums on to that. However when I try to sync the iPhone 4 with the macbook it tells me I will lose everything on the iPhone 4 as it will only sync one way i.e. macbook to phone, not phone to macbook.
The problem is that I no longer have the CDs (got rid of them in a house clear out as i thought they were happily on my computer) and the old Acer has died completely so I can't get the albums off there. Therefore they now only exist on the old phone.
I wondered if anyone knows any ways of getting round the syncing problem to get the music off the iPhone 4 and onto the Macbook? Otherwise I'm going to lose around 30 albums!
Thanks so much
Claire CWhen you got rid of your CDs you also got rid of the right to have a copy of the music. And, as you can see, there are reasons for keeping the CDs as a backup.
You obviously did not do the correct process to transfer the iTunes library from the old computer to the new one. If you still have the old computer your question would best be addressed from that perspective. If you do not you will have to buy third party software to do a less-than-ideal transfer of non-iTunes purchases from the iPhone before wiping it so it will sync with the new computer.
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss. To use a device with a a different setup you transfer the old library from a computer or a backup directly to the new setup, not the device to the library. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991 -
My mac air is running slugiish and my internet connection takes forever to change windows...what can I do?
If the computer is brand new, it may be reviewing (indexing) all you files for search. This will take a few hours to complete. Otherwise you likely have a program that is running poorly and slowing your system down.
Open the Fibder
Click the Go menu at the top of the screen
Click on utilities menu item under go
Open the Activity Monitor
When Activity monitor opens, there will be a lot of data in the window, to make better sense of it click on the column labeled CPU. This will sort entries by how much of your computer's CPU they use. The lower the number the better.
Locate any programs using 80% or more of your CPU. They are the likely culprits of your speed issue.
If the speed issue is only related to surfing the internet, then you more than likely have an issue with WiFi instead. Try moving closer to your wireless router to see if it speeds up. -

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -
Problem description:
I am having issues with my mac becoming extremely SLOW. I upgraded the RAM (Doubled it up) and it was working well for a while, but it’s now back to being extremely slow. I noticed the change when I upgraded to Mavericks. I’m still running Mavericks and haven’t upgraded to Yosemite yet.
What could be causing this to happen? SO slow and keep in mind I'm usually always multi-tasking when operating my laptop.
If you can offer any suggestions then please let me know!
Thanks in advance,
Mike

You need to spend some time removing files you no longer need. I'd suggest you reboot & connect an external HD, then slowy start copying files off this Mac. You need to take care because the Mac can run out of memory & put you into a 'must reboot now' situation, don't forget to delete files once they are copied off the system. Reboot to keep the memory usage to a minimum.
You need at least 20GB free at all times to allow the Mac some breathing room for temporary files & virtual memory storage. More free space is better, especially on spinning disks.
There are many tips on this site for removing old files & finding large files or folders
http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html (and search this site).
These two can also help to find large files & folders.
http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
http://whatsizemac.com/
See Király's post for a way to make these apps search all folders (by default it will be limited by your permissions).
drive space not adding up - deleted user?
Don't forget that certain apps have their own 'trash' so open iPhoto, iMovie or any other app that has it's own trash & check the built in trash is empty, otherwise the items in the trash will be taking up disk space.
I'd also consider removing any of the system modifications you do not use, like Blackberry's software, Citrix, Toast's extensions. Otherwise check that the installed versions are up to date & compatible with the OS. http://roaringapps.com can indicate if other users are happy with these apps on your OS. -

First off, yes, I do have the latest version of iWork.
What happens is that when I click on Pages, the application loads, however I can't actually open any document or create a new one.
If it helps, here are the Console errors I get when I select File->New (CMD+N).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. No, I didn't have piracy in mind but as you can get it from either Apple store or the App store and it will influence how I answer.
When you have used the CD version of iWork you have to do the Software Update check to get the latest version.
It might be wise to uninstall iWork first with Yvans script.
To uninstall correctly iWork, go to Yvans iDisk :

Download :

That I can recall it has happend 5 times now. Always when it's in active use never when it's sitting idle. Twice it's happened in Safari when opening new tabs using Splat+T; twice it's happened in iTunes, both times while browsing the store navigating with my external trackpad; and once in Skype when doubletapping on a contact using my external trackpad. This is getting really frustrating as the only recouse I've found is to power cycle the MBP. I never had a problem when using Snow Leopard.
Thanks,
CalebI saw that and almost replied, but I wasn't sure if it was the same problem because you referenced it happening when the "screen times out" and for me it was only when it was being activly used. Glad to hear I'm not the only one seeing this issue.

Transferring contacts/music/apps etc to new computer from iphone 3GS
Hi
My windows PC has just died and i am wondering how to transfer my iphone data (apps, calendar, music, photos) onto a new laptop (windows 7) into itunes without deleting anything
I have read threads which say how to tansfer itune purchases, but not all of my music has been purchased via itunes. Is there anyway of saving this music or will it be deleted.
Any help would be appreciaited because i could stand to lose 800 songs!Transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup of your old PC before it died. That should contain everything that was in your iPhone regardless of where it came from. Your backup of your Oulook data will contain the contacts and calendars you synced with the iPhone via iTunes.
