ExecuteScalar returns System.Decimal or System.Double on diff Oracle srvrs

Hi,
Oracle Data Provider for .NET Developer's Guide states that Oracle type NUMBER maps to .NET type System.Decimal.
In my application I would like to retrieve value from database using simple query and OracleCommand.ExecuteScalar method. The problem is that on one database ExecuteScalar returns a value of type System.Decimal and on the other a value of type System.Double. Table creation script and C# code are shown below.
Since I declared column as NUMBER without any precision or scale, I wonder if there is a setting that specifies default values on Oracle server? If I declare column as NUMBER(38) I get the same result (System.Decimal) on both databases. But I would not like to change table creation scripts.
Oracle.DataAccess.dll (9.2.0.2102)
Database 1 (returns System.Decimal)
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.2.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 9.2.0.2.0 - Production
CORE     9.2.0.2.0     Production
TNS for Compaq Tru64 UNIX: Version 9.2.0.2.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 9.2.0.2.0  Production
Database 2 (returns System.Double)
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
CORE     9.2.0.3.0     Production
TNS for Compaq Tru64 UNIX: Version 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
Database scripts:
CREATE TABLE TEST_TABLE (ID NUMBER NOT NULL) LOGGING NOCACHE NOPARALLEL;
ALTER TABLE TEST_TABLE ADD (CONSTRAINT PK_TEST_TABLE PRIMARY KEY (ID));
INSERT INTO TEST_TABLE ( ID ) VALUES (1);
COMMIT;
C# code:
using System;
using System.Data;
using Oracle.DataAccess.Client;
namespace TestOracle
     class MainRun
          [STAThread]
          static void Main(string[] args)
               if (args.Length != 1)
                    Console.WriteLine("usage: TestOracle.exe DSN");
                    return;
               string dsn = args[0];
               OracleConnection connection = null;
               OracleCommand cmd = null;
               try
                    connection = new OracleConnection(dsn);
                    connection.Open();
                    cmd = new OracleCommand();
                    cmd.CommandText = "SELECT ID FROM TEST_TABLE";
                    cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
                    cmd.Connection = connection;
                    object retVal = cmd.ExecuteScalar();
                    Console.WriteLine(retVal.GetType().FullName);
                    connection.Close();
               finally
                    if (cmd != null)
                         cmd.Dispose();
                    if (connection != null)
                         connection.Dispose();

There was a fix on the database side that caused this behavior change but this was by design and intended. An event was also introduced as part of this fix so that this fix could be enabled or disabled on the database side. Please refer to the doc for more information.
ODP.NET has worked around this behavior change in ODP.NET itself so that the behavior is consistent between different database versions. Next release of ODP.NET would have this work around.

  • Oracle NUMBER column retreived as System.Double instead of System.Decimal

    We've been using the OleDb Managed Provider for some time now, and all oracle NUMBER datatypes have always come back from the db as System.Decimal.
    we recently installed a new database, and now NUMBER comes back as System.Double. The table create scripts are the same for the new db. The client is not the issue as I can point the same web server at the old db and it works fine.
    I've been unable to find any documentation on the subject.

    I have the same problem also. I'm using VC++6.0 and ADO 2.71 to perform queries with an Oracle Client 9.2.0.1. The same query on same table but on different Server version returns different results. With the production server, which is an 8.1.7.4 server, a NUMBER column returns a LONG value, while on the Test server, which is a 9.2.0.5.0 server, the same column returns a DOUBLE value. The problem is that using ADO I don't check data type/size when getting values, but I aspect a LONG value because a created the column with NUMBER specification. Could this be a different default from previous server version when creating the NUMBER column without any SCALE and PRECISION attributes?

  • Connect SharePoint to SQL Server Database Then Build Rules Based Returns System

    Hello Guys,
    I work for an ecommerce business. We sell a wide range of products to customers all around the world which are ordered from our websites and then dispatched to our customers from our warehouses.
    I have been tasked with developing a computerised return system from the company because at the moment everything is done using paper forms.
    We have all our customer, order and product data within SQL Server databases.
    What I would like to know is...
    1. Can we connect sharepoint online to a local sql server database
    2. Could we then build searches within sharepoint to display data contained within these databases e.g. customer information etc
    3. How is the data presented in sharepoint - is there a way to design how the data is displayed within sharepoint etc?
    4. Can we then build a rules based return system within sharepoint? The on screen workflow would need to vary according to data contained within the database e.g. the weight if the product being returned and also on fields input by the service agent such
    as the reason for the return, what solution the customer would like etc.
    5. is it possible to build these workflows in such a way that they can be saved part way through then gone back to later
    6. Can reports be build based on the returns that are being generated e.g. list of products most commonly returned
    Sorry for all the questions, I am a bit of sharepoint novice. I think it may possible be able to do what we need but I just wondered if the answer to any of the above questions is definately a no because if it is that could mean it is not suitable
    Thanks

    You could use a BCS connection
    http://community.office365.com/en-us/b/office_365_community_blog/archive/2012/10/11/business-data-connectivity-services-in-office-365-sharepoint-online.aspx, this will allow you to edit data in your non SharePoint SQL DB, on premises, from Office 365 SharePoint.
    Search will index the web applications you point it at, and the lists from the BCS will be part of those web apps, site collections, sites at some place and will get indexed.
    You can create views on the data, that can sort of work like a search, but when you search on the site where the lists are the query will return results based on the BCS data.
    These views can be based on criteria such as the weight of the product being returned and other fields.
    The data is presented as a list.
    You can make it read only or read-write based on SharePoint permissions on the list.  The account used to create the connection can edit.
    BCS is possible in on-premises SharePoint too
    here is a good read on it,

  • How do you return System Time of the local box in FTP command

    How do you return System Time of the local box in FTP command... since I want to output the system time of my local box copying to the FTP server...

    Its asking me to enter a new date... I actually want to return it into a log file since I am using ws_ftp.... but the log files dont have any date time being returned... i just want to be able to echo that date time into the log file... but it doesnt do that... I also tried
    SHELL ECHO %DATE% %TIME%
    but it returns this in the log file
    Processing Line 10 [SHELL ECHO %DATE% %TIME]
    I also tried in my ws_ftp script and it says:
    Processing Line 15 [!Date]
    Sending command [!Date] with parameter []
    !Date
    500 '!DATE': command not understood
    Failure in command [!Date]

  • Homogeneous System Copy on Windows/Oracle.

    Hi!
    I have to start a project on Homogeneous System Copy on Windows/Oracle.
    I have gone through the System Copy documents by SAP and also verious SAP note (spl. 659509 ). But still I am not really clear about the whole process.
    As per my understanding, as follows :
    1. Export the Database from Source Host. <b>But HOW? Wheather I have to use any System Tool from SAP ?  </b>
    <b>Copy that to Target Host.</b>
    2. <b>Install the CI in Target Host. As I am working on SAP 4.7 1.10 (SR1) with Kernel 6.20  (NU).</b>
    3. At the time of installation of DI in Target Host give the path of Exoprt fileset.
    My question :
    <b>1. Wheather my plan is right or needs change?</b>
    2. What type of copy it will be :
    a) Homogeneous System Copy using Online / Offline Database Backup.
    b) Homogeneous System Copy using R3LOAD Procedure.
    c) Homogeneous System Copy using R3COPY Procedure.
    <b>3. Do I really need to download/order any system copy tool from SAP?</b>
    My Source :
    SAP 4.7 on Windows 2000 with Oracle 8.1.7 with noarchivelog mode.
    Terget :
    SAP 4.7 on Windows 2003 with Oracle9.2.0.8
    All Kernel : 620 (NU)
    Looking for an urgent solution.

    Hi! Umesh,
    I have found 2 errore .
    1)  ORA-01652: unable to extend temp segment by 2560 in tablespace PSAPTEMP
    2)  DbSl Trace: ORA-1403 when accessing table SAPUSER
    Two things I want to mention here.
    1.  I donot know the passwd of datadase users of Source . I have used different passwd for Target DB userd.
    2. Used defferent SAP SID. Source : ID4 and Target : IDN
    Is that cause any harm?

  • R/3 System Copy PRD -- QA Oracle 9

    Hi all,
    We need to perform a system copy of Production back to QA (4.7/6.40 kernel). My previous experience with a system copy was on a 4.6C system with Oracle 8 using R3COPY. I have just downloaded the latest system copy guide 'Homogeneous and Heterogeneous System Copy for SAP® Systems Based on SAP Web Application Server 6.20' and for Oracle it says that backup/restore method is not recommended or support and to use R3LOAD. We are not keen to use this method as it requires a longer Production downtime for us (more than twice what would be required for offline backup), also we would need the space available on the disk.
    Has anyone still used the backup/restore method as described in the 4.6C system copy guide with Oracle 9? I don't see why this method is not supported since for us it would be much easier.
    Thanks
    - Natalie

    Hello,
    Perhaps this notes can be of help:
    <a href="http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/427836">427836</a> OneDb system: Homogeneous system copy with DBR3CP.R3S ( bit old, perhaps not good for your system )

    <a href="http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/857734">857734</a> System Copy of SAP Systems based on 6.20 and 6.40 / Oracle
    On this notes you can find other interesting refering the same issue
    Not much into system copies with the new tools, but I think it is possible to use backup/restore.
    The only thing is that you will have a little "mess" -> the tablespace name will have the old "SID", same happens with the schema. Unless you have installed the system with this issue in mind and used a "neutral" schema, the note is ( I think )[url=http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/617444]617444[/url]

  • NUMBER return types (Decimal/Int16/Int32) how does it work?

    We ran into a problem with a stored procedure returning the result of a select (using Fill method).
    Sometimes some data comes back as int32, sometimes the same data has decimal as datatype.
    We've been struggling to get the same datatype back all the time for the same column. Unfortunately so far without success. The problem is that these columns are part of our key and we can't use a 'relation' between them if the datatypes are int32/decimal: they don't match.
    To simulate the problem:
    Create table myTest (col1 number(2));
    insert a row (e.g. 12)
    SELECT col1 FROM myTest
    this becomes an Int16 when retrieved.
    now comes the strange part:
    SELECT col1 FROM myTest
    UNION
    SELECT 0 FROM DUAL
    returns an DECIMAL.
    We tried:
    SELECT col1 FROM myTest
    UNION
    SELECT TO_NUMBER(0,2) FROM DUAL
    but this does not work, it still returns an Decimal (expected Int16).
    We tried to make the to_number into an outer select, we tried to create an UDT and populate that one, we tried a lot but did not succeed in get a guaranteed Int32 back.
    Any ideas on how to resolve this?

    Out of curiosity
    what does
    "select TO_NUMBER(0,2) from dual" returns? A Decimal or Int16?
    Maybe (i am really guessing here) the union stmt returns a NUMBER(x,y) type which will cause the provider to gives you back a Decimal .net type.

  • System ERROR EVENT WARNING : ORACLE.APPS.AR.HZ.CUSTACCOUNT.CREATE

    Hi,
    When Customer is Created / Updated using Receivables or TCA APIs in Oracle Apps 11.5.10, all registered Business Events are firing and subscription code (PL/SQL Rule Function) is executing successfully.
    In Administrator Workflow window, Notifications tab showing System Error: Warning Message for all the events which are subscribed.
    eg:
    "System: Error Event WARNING : oracle.apps.ar.hz.CustAccount.create /
    oracle.apps.ar.hz.CustAccount.create62829 " Warning Message.
    Please advice.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Whenever there is a requirement of raising a Business Event due to some custom activity, you should call wf_event.raise to do this.
    Just google to see the parameters you need to pass it while calling it.

  • Migrating System.Data.OracleClient to Oracle.DataAccess.Client - XSD error

    Hi, I'm a newbie using Oracle ODP.NET provider for .NET.
    We have a web application that uses XSD to connect to Oracle using the provider System.Data.OracleClient.
    We want to migrate from System.Data.OracleClient to Oracle.DataAccess.Client.
    Installing and referencing the Oracle.DataAccess.dll all works fine.
    Then I changed all the references from System.Data.OracleClient to Oracle.DataAccess.Client and removed the System.Data.OracleClient.dll assembly from the web.config file.
    All compiles well, until I run the application, looks like the problem is the parameter use in the XSD file... the error I get is:

    I'd like some help on how to make the XSD compile with the new provider, Oracle.DataAccess.Client.
    Many thanks in advance for any help!
    Pieter

    MS OracleClient binds parameters by name. ODP.NET binds by position. If you want to change ODP.NET's default parameter binding behavior, set:
    OracleCommand.BindByName = true;
    Do this for every OracleCommand that binds parameters.

  • Sybase System 11 Migration to Oracle 8i

    We are trying to migrate a Sybase system 11 database to Oracle 8.1.5 using the Migration Workbench tool. Some tables contain more than 20 million records. Is it possible to break the data migration so that we can exclude som e tables from the migration. It would be quite helpfull saving the script that the Migration Tool uses and then customizing it.

    Your best best is to use the SQL*Loader script generation facility in OMWB. It will create the bcp extract batch file, and an SQL*Loader batch file, along with the SQL*Loader .CTL control files. You can then edit the batch files to decide on which tables you wish to load.

  • System requirements to install Oracle 9i

    I would like to know what are the system requirements to install Oracle Database version 9i in a windows 2000 server.
    Thanks and Regards.....

    128 MB RAM will be enough but it will probably get pretty slow if you open Word and the Internet Explorer while working on the DB. So, personally, I would rather recommand 512 MB.

    Suite requires the standard WebLogic Server installation (which includes jrocket
    jdk.). It does not support generic versions of WebLogic Server installation (such as
    those that use wls1035_generic.jar).
    ■ Oracle Load Testing Agent also supported on Linux 32-bit & 64-bit, in addition to
    Windows 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems listed above
    Note: These are minimum requirements only and actual
    requirements for the Oracle Load Testing Server will vary depending
    on the size and configuration of your load test. If you are running
    larger load tests, of greater than 1000 Virtual Users, you should
    consider deploying Oracle Load Testing on a faster server class
    machine with additional RAM recommended.
    Note: Oracle recommends running the Oracle Load Testing Server
    and Agents on separate systems for production load testing. The
    amount of memory required on the Oracle Load Testing Agent
    systems may increase based on the number of Virtual Users that will
    be assigned to run on each Agent. For more information, visit the
    QA/Testing Technology Center on Oracle Technology Network or
    contact your Oracle representative.

    3.3 Oracle Test Manager
    Oracle Test Manager has the following system requirements:
    ■ Operating System (32-bit and 64-bit versions): Windows XP, Windows Vista,
    Windows 2003, Windows 7, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2. Oracle Enterprise
    Linux 5.1, 5.2, 4u8.
    ■ Memory: Minimum 2 GB.
    ■ System: x86, 32-bit or 64-bit processor, 2.6 GHz or faster
    ■ Disk Space: 10 GB minimum free (at least 3 GB free on the system drive)
    ■ Browser: Internet Explorer 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, Firefox 3.5/3.6, 6.x
    ■ Database: Oracle EE 10g or 11g, XE 10g
    ■ Application Server: Oracle WebLogic 11g (10.3.5.0). Oracle Application Testing
    Suite requires the standard WebLogic Server installation (which includes jrocket
    jdk.). It does not support generic versions of WebLogic Server installation (such as
    those that use wls1035_generic.jar).
    3.4 Additional Notes
    The following are additional notes about system requirements:
    ■ The ATS installer can automatically install and configure an Oracle 10g Express
    Edition (XE) database for use with Oracle Load Testing and Oracle Test Manager.
    Although this is useful for demos, for production usage switching to Oracle's 11g
    Enterprise Edition database is highly recommended. Oracle 11g Standard Edition
    and Oracle 10g EE or SE are also supported.
    ■ System memory requirements do not take into account other processes that may
    be running and using memory on your system, reducing free uncommitted
    memory available.
    ■ When installed on the same machine, Oracle Load Testing and Oracle Test
    Manager will run on the same server and use shared system resources. Oracle
    Functional Test/OpenScript is a separate application that have its own memory
    and CPU requirements.
    ■ The ATS products will run in 32-bit compatibility mode when installed on 64-bit
    operating systems. It is possible for Oracle Application Testing Suite to be installed
    on an existing WebLogic server. However, if the pre-installed WebLogic server is
    JRockit plus WebLogic (64-bit) environment, some functions in Oracle Application
    Testing Suite will not work properly. Oracle Application Testing Suite can be
    installed on a 32-bit WebLogic, but not a 64-bit.
    ■ The legacy Oracle Functional Testing, VB-based scripting platform and associated
    components (such as Job Scheduler) are no longer included with the ATS installer
    Note: These are minimum requirements only and actual
    requirements for Oracle Test Manager will vary depending on the
    quantity of test assets stored and number of concurrent users
    accessing the application. If you have a large quantity of test cases,
    requirements or issues stored and/or are deploying Oracle Test
    Manager for a team greater than 10 users, you should consider
    deploying Oracle Test Manager on a faster server class machine with
    additional RAM recommended.

  • Pacman -Syu returns system up to date after a new 2008.03 (solved)

    I just installed arch from the march 08 live cd (the new cd got stuck on the grub boot screen, but that is another bug for another thread).
    I eventually got a totally working installation (installing only core packages).
    what's strange is, i've updated pacman's package list and a pacman -Syu says the local system is up to date, but for whatever reason, no package was actually downloaded or updated. My kernel is stil 2.6.24-arch, my klibc is 1.5.5... What gives?
    everything i read says all you need to do is run a pacman -Syu, but clearly there should have been updates from the core packages between march and now? (i know there has been, and that packages are updated constantly).
    clearly i'm missing something simple here. Sorry for the stupid question.
    (i uncommented the achlinux.org repo line in the mirrorlist, and i'm sure this is the server pacman is using).
    thanks for any help.

    oops, my bad. that was a typo.
    a pacman -Syu yields a local database is up to date
    the first time i did a pacman -Sy it downloaded and updated some new dbs... but the  -Syu has always returned that the system is up to date, when i'm fairly certain it isnt... if i am running kernel 2.6.24, that is old right? i should be presented with some updates if i just installed the march live cd...
    thanks,
