Expanding my dual 2.5ghz G5 with 2TB internal drive?

I have been looking at the Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive.
Will my computer run two of these 2TB drives?

I actually just added two 1TB drives to my G5. My original drive was making
failure noises (metal noises on reads). I cloned the drive with CCC and switched it out. The Seagate's are quite. One issue is the 1.5 read of the ATA port on the motherboard. When you open the Seagate manual it reads that you have to use a jumper to set the drive to 1.5 transfer rate.
Now previous post stated that the 3gb rate will work. I had to search old drives for a jumper (jumpers not included with drive.
So the question I have is do I need the jumpers, will the mother board handle the transfer rate of 3gb.
One issue I have had is that I changed the drive name on the clone.
Seems to have jumbled permissions, which are under repair at this time.
I am also getting a Prosub error.
Hope this help.

    Hi Phil Brayshaw-
What does the little white power light do? This should be helpful: About the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) diagnostic LEDs
Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

  • Two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine; only one backup deletes.

I'm using two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine and deleted some backups while in Time Machine. They deleted from drive A, but drive B still has the files. Is there a way to delete these? I tried unmounting drive A in Disk Utility but then I can't enter Time Machine.
I love the dual backups, but should I be able to do dual deletes of all backups? I don't see a way to accomplishg this except to force Time Machine to do a backup, then do that again so it switches drives, but that seems a bit convoluted.
If one of you guru types has an answer I'd be most interested.
    Thanks.

You can manually deal with this by using the "Browse Other Backup Disks" function which is accessed via holding the opt/alt key and while selecting the TM icon in the menu bar.
You can then delete the instances of the desired files in each backup set.
Not elegant, but I wouldn't expect that this will be done automatically, as there are a lot of permutations of how you use multiple backup sets.

  • I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and set-up with multiple user accounts.  How do I create a path to store data files on my second drive within an application?

I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and a multiple user account set-up.  Hw do I create a path to store data files on the second drive within an application?

This is the Mac mini forum not the iMac forum however...
Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
    POSIX = /Volumes/volname/foldername
    Mac style = Volname:foldername:

  • Dual 2,5GHz G5 with startup problems

    Hi,
I have a Dual 2,5GHz (June 2004 model) G5 with the following problem:
When I try to turn it on, the screen sometimes stays dark. This is often the case the first time in the morning. Occasionally when this happens the front power LED is off. I have to power it off and try again.
After usually 2-3 tries I get it to boot, the LED is on, the system boots but freezes during boot (sometimes at the grey Apple logo) or it boots completely and freezes after a while of working with it.
I reseated the video card and also checked battery voltage (it's 3.6V as it should be) and even put in a new one just to be sure, but that didn't change anything. I also tried the PMU reset from time to time.
I suspected bad RAM and since I have 2 pairs of the original 2x256MB and 1 pair of newer 512MB modules I started testing RAM by using the memtest in single user mode. Now comes the weird thing:
Sometimes the G5 freezes during memtest, but most of the time it runs and passes all tests with OK. I always put in 1 pair of RAMs at a time (the first 2x256, then the other 2x256, then the 2x512) to rule out bad RAM. Since memtest never displayed an error as long as the machine did not freeze I think I ruled out bad RAM. They also seem to work fine in another G5 (same model).
Then I thought maybe some RAM slots on the logic board are defective and repeated the above tests with other slot pairs, but the outcome is still the same.
I am not quite sure, but I think the logic board went bad. Do you have any additional suggestions? Is it also possible that the CPUs are the culprit or can that be ruled out?
    Thanks
    Björn
PS: I forgot to mention that sometimes the startup chime does not play and (very rarely) it plays but gets cut off at the end.

    Hi DaddyPaycheck,
    I know that.
Sorry, but what I meant was that this problem has nothing to do with the hard disk not working or the OS on it being corrupted. The G5 doesn't even get to the point where booting comes into play. It hangs most of the time way before that. I am pretty sure that it's the logic board, but it could also be defective CPUs and I was hoping for someone with a similar problem to narrow it down.
    Björn
PS: Can it still be the power supply even though it's always powering on and turning on the fans? I never had the case that the G5 stayed completely "dead" which usually means the PS is defective.

  • 2tb internal drive macbook pro?

I have a macbook pro 13 inch from spring 2010
Will this be able to handle a 2tb internal hard drive? it is 3.5"
also can i put in 16gb of ram?
And is it possible to buy an extended battery like 12 cell or something, so my mac has double the life?
    Thanks soo Much!!

The only batteries are those provided by Apple or Newertech.com and other third-party vendors you can google. You won't find anything with so-called extended life exceeding more than a few percent. Apple's laptop batteries are not quite like the cheap stuff made for PC laptops.

  • Imac has 2tb internal drive, can i use a 2 tb external for TM?

I wiild like to use a 2 tb drive to backup my imac (2tb) with TM. Does time machine do a full disk backup or only the used memory? I haven't seen and drives larger than 2tb if this wont work.

TM as any other backup tool backs up used disk space, not the whole disk capacity. how much data do you have on the internal drive? note that TM drive should generally be at least two times bigger than the total amount of data you are backing up. you might want to look at a RAID array to use as a backup drive if you don't satisfy that ratio. or you can use a different backup solution which doesn't require as much space on the backup drive. see this post by kappy for options

  • Dual-Monitor wacom setup with nvidia proprietary driver

Hello dear ArchLinux community. I'm new to this forum and very happy to join this great community.
I'll cut right to the chase.
I want to buy a Wacom Cintiq (tablet with integrated monitor) in the near future, and am therefore looking into issues I might have with the setup.
The desired configuration would have the tablet as well as a 24" screen hooked up to my geforce gtx275 in dualhead mode, with the input from the tablet mapped to the screen area of the tablet.
I've done a bit of testing for that matter with my old Wacom Bamboo and a second monitor.
Mapping a tablets input to a screen is very simple IN THEORY.
With the linuxwacom drivers you can map the tablet to one X screen (as displayed by xrandr).
The problem is that nvidia uses Twinview for dualheaded systems, which presents X with only one big screen, rather that two individual ones.
(mind you, this all worked like a charm with fglrx/intel)
I tried switching to nouveau, but this doesn't work for two reasons:
1.: Nouveau presents two individual screens to X when dualheaded, so I can use linuxwacom's MapToOuput.
What happens then is that, as soon as I use the stylus, the mapping starts to shift rapidly between one screen and the whole area. I haven't figured out, what exactly does that, but it makes it impossible to do anything with the tablet
2.: Nouveau, even with mesa, just has no 3d acceleration for my card. Since I do a lot of 3d work it just doesn't work for me.
    Three other possibilities would be
1.: To try and disable Twinview/use something else. I have no idea if or how this works, though.
2.: To restrict the mapping area of the tablet in some other way. Again, no idea how to do this.
3.: To use two X sessions - one for either monitor. As far as I know this robs me of the ability to drag windows from one screen to another. Also, I don't know how Gnome3 would react to it AND I don't know how to properly configure it. PLEASE ADVISE
A last resort would be to buy an ATI card along with the Tablet (after all, if I'm going to shell out $2000 for a tablet I might as well add $150 to make sure it works).
With this I run into another problem, though, because Gnome3 and fglrx WON'T COOPERATE (please correct me if I'm wrong. I would LOVE to see a solution to these graphical glitches)
The actual question to you, fellow Arch users, is which of these solutions - if any - I should go for, and how to best execute it.
Any other suggestions would be great, too.
Thank you very much in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Gabriel [liveag].

You may not be SOL with TwinView. Do either of these links help?

  • Dual channel receiver works with NI-PC2/driver v2.6 but not NI-GPIB/TNT(PNP)/driver v2.7.2

I posted a message earlier but didn't word it correctly. We have a Microdyne 2800 receiver that we would like to set up remotely via 488. The receiver works fine in DOS using an older NI-PC2 card with the v2.6 drivers that came with it. However, when we switch to the newer PC-GPIB/TNT(PNP) 488 card with the latest DOS drivers, v2.7.2, it doesn't respond. The receiver recognizes that it received something via the bus but does nothing (it has a little red light that turns on when in remote mode). What prompted us to test it in DOS was that the same thing was happening under WinNT 4.0 using the PNP card and the v1.60 drivers.
In ibic, I'm using the exact same
sequence of commands to setup the card (ibdev, ibclr, and then ibln) and then I use the ibwrt to write the setup string to it. Are there any differences in the cards and/or drivers that I should be aware of?
    Thanks for any help!

    Dear Sr.,
This kind of troubleshooting can be extensive so I recommend you to call us in Technical Support to address your issue, you can find the information at:
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/niae_asc.main
Some of the common questions I'd ask you about this will be:
    1. Has this board work before?
    2. Have you tried it in another computer?
    3. When installing the board, did you ran the configuration utility and did the query and scan for instruments? (Start > Programs > National Instruments > NI-488.2 > Explore GPIB.... click F5 to Refresh then Select your board from "Devices and Interfaces" and click "Scan for Instruments" then when it finds your instrument click "Communicate with Instrument" and then click "Query")
    4. Have you tried this IBIC procedure? http://www.ni.com/su
    pport/gpib/max/ibic.htm
    5. Take a look at this link, it may be of help: http://www.ni.com/support/gpib/dos/attntpnp/default.htm
    6. What type of termination character does your instrument uses?
If after looking at this questions and links your board still is not working please give us a call, we may need to try different workarounds or need more information from your system. As far as the information you wrote your board should work fine. Also, I can assume from your info that you have a 488.2 compatible instrument, is this correct?

  • Use of 256GB SSD with 2TB hard drive

What is the best way to do this?  Everything just gets saved to the SSD.  How san I set it up to save things to the 2 TB hard drive automatically.  I think that I want Documents, iTunes files and iPhoto files on the 2 TB.  Need advice

What you do is move your Home folder to the HDD, then open Accounts (Snow Leopard) or Users & Groups (Lion), click on the lock icon to authenticate, select your admin account, CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your account and select Advanced Options from the contextual menu.
You will see a field labeled, "Home directory," that has a Choose button on the right. Click on that button and navigate to the Home folder on your HDD, select it, and click on the Open button. Click on the OK button and immediately restart the computer.
After the restart your computer will be using the Home folder on the HDD instead of the one on the SSD. You can now delete the contents of the Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders in the old Home folder on the SSD. This will free up that space.

  • Do I need a Raid to edit video or can I work with Xserve internal drives

to start with and upgrade to a RAID system later on.
I mainly do SD video with ProRes codec, I want to to have to CPU sharing media.
    Thanks,
    AN

It sounds to me like what you want is external shared storage - starting small and then expanding as time goes on.
I hate to say it but I think that the Xserve is probably the most expensive and least effective way to do this. What you'll end up with is probably 4TB of storage (maybe 6TB if you do a ram disk and 2TB x3) shared over ethernet. I would instead suggest that you look into multi-TB NAS system you can share between the stations which will give you the same effective storage at a much lower cost. If you were getting the speed of fibre or the mass storage of DAS from the Xserve I could see it but you're getting the drawbacks without the benefits.
Unfortunately SAN is not something you can piecemeal together - it needs to be planned and implemented as a whole. While the Xserve you buy today may, or may not, be useful when you make an Xsan down the road the Xserve will be a small portion of any Xsan implementation.
Speaking as someone who used to do video you need to spend smart with today's dollars and I'm not sure the Xserve does that for you now. If you can get the same features for less money or more features/storage for the same money that is usable now - that's my vote.

  • Using iMac with dead internal drive long term

I've got a friend with an iMac with a definitely dead internal HDD. Got it back running with an external and it seems to work. We also selected that external as the default start up in System Prefs.
I'm curious was to whether, however, he can just run it forever with that HDD inside. I'm not at his machine, but when working on it I saw some evidence that there were attempts to access it, from like mds for Spotlight, and so on. If it was one of mine I'd at least yank the drive, but he doesn't wanna pay to repair it and is quite content with the external. But we'd like to know if that wonky drive is gonna cause issues, or if there's a way through software to disable it forever.

Add it to Spotlight's Privacy prefPane to preclude indexing. That's all that needs doing.

  • Boot up with 2 internal drives running OS?

I have an older internal SATA drive with SL OS loaded.
I need to pull some stuff off that drive onto my current system.
If I slide the old drive into a free Bay- how do I make sure I boot from my current System drive?

    Hi bokes;
Your Mac will remember the drive it last booted from, so unless you change that, it will boot again from the same drive.

  • Migrating from G4 with multiple internal drives

i'm trying to migrate from my old G4 to my new Mac Pro. I have only 1 monitor so I can only 'see' the new computer. I have connected both machines and restart holding down the 'T' key. Since I can't 'see' the old machine to tell when the firewire logo disappears i hold down the key till I see the start up disk appear on the desktop. Up till this point everything seems fine but none of the other drives appear and migration assistant will not let me go to the next step. Any ideas what's happening?

I ended up doing most of the transfer manually (via external USB drive).
That way, I made sure everything was copied, and I had a backup at the same time
Alternately, you should be able to network the machines via ethernet cable, and move files that way.

  • Dual 2.5ghz G5 video card questions

    Hello,
I've read a bunch of posts on replated subjects, but I've enough of a newbie at this to not be sure I'm undertanding all of it.
    I have a Dual 2.5ghz G5 with a ATI Radeon 9600 XT video card.
I want to get a 30" display. While I don't play games I will be using Aperture, which seems to work better with a faster video card. Ideally I'd like to be able to also drive a 15" lcd on the side as well, but this is not a necessity.
I've found two in stock at various places. Can anyone tell me if one or both of these would work? And if one would be a much better performer?
    thanks very much.
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition Video Card 100-435058 ($239)
    and
ATI Radeon X850XT 256 MB AGP Video Card ($513)
    Per the Apple Store website:
System Requirements : Requires ATI Radeon 9650, Radeon X850 XT or NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL Card

    Hi,
The first card needs to be the ATI RADEON 9800 PRO Mac Special Edition Graphics AGP 8x 256 MB DDR - The G5 Edition. The one you have posted is not the 'Special' G5 Edition.
The second one needs to be a Mac Edition also:
    RADEON X800 XT Mac Edition.
The 9800 is much faster than a 9600. The X800 is the fastest video card made for the Mac AGP, very good card.
They are both very difficult to find. See this thread for more info:
