Export iPhoto pics to PC while maintaining file structure

Hi,
I am sure I am going to flame up the old Mac vs PC war, but I want to export all my iPhoto photos to a PC while maintaining some sort of file structure.
Is there an app that can do this? Can it be done from the Macintosh version of Picasa?
I did find this youtube tutorial on how to do it, but going into Terminal to get it done may be above my abilities.
Thanks in advance for all your help,
Phil

1 - there is no "old Mac vs PC" war - only old PC users who want to make a Mac just like their PC - it is not and will not be - we explain how thing DO work - not how they should or what is best
2 - does yoir question involve iPhoto for the Mac in any way? It appears to be a Picasa support question - this is the wrong place for that - you need a Picasa suppor forum fot that
3 - this makes no sense
but I want to export all my iPhoto photos to a PC while maintaining some sort of file structure.
since anything you export from iPhoto is in "some sort of file structure" - impossible not to be as that is the only way photos can be stored digitally
If you have iPhoto '11 you can export in a folder structure that matches your event structure - see this user tip for details on export options including this one
4 - I'm not going to watch the YouTube video but there should be no reason to use Terminal to export yoru photos

  • Creating an 11x17 booklet while maintaining file quality/size

I regularly use Pages for newsletter production - my newsletters must be in 11x17 format when submitted to a printer for production. I do not have InDesign or Quark - I'm trying to avoid the expense, quite honestly.
So: when I have completed a Pages document, I must convert to 11x17. I currently use Cocoa Booklet to do this. However, much to my dismay, I've found that the size/quality of my document takes a nose dive when I convert to 11x17 format with Cocoa Booklet!
I want to give my file to the printer in the highest possible resolution. One of the newsletters I do frequently contains artwork, and the creator deserves decent quality images in the final printed product.
So my question is: is there any way to create an 11x17 document from a Pages document while maintaining the original document quality?
    Thank you!

See the other post for the problem of assembling an imposed set of pages. Usually though your commercial printer will handle this. If they can't I really wonder whether they should be handling the job.
The core problem of resolution and quality suitable for commercial printing is however a problem with the colorsync quartz filters used by OSX to produce PDF-X files. Apple has set these up wrong and made them well nigh impossible to correct.
If anyone out there can give detailed step by step instructions how to alter the filters in Colorsync Utility and make them appear correctly and consistently in the printer options, I and many others will be eternally grateful.
As it stands the output reduces many graphics, effects and even some text to an unacceptable 72dpi pixellation.
The inking is wildly over what commercial printing requires. Normally this should never total more than 320% to prevent smearing, pooling and overwetting and bubbling the paper.
The filters do not provide the crop marks, bleeds or printer's slugs needed for production.
The filters do not allow targeting of the individual printer's equipment and settings.
There is no transparency or documentation of the process nor its effects which makes it difficult to control or know if it is correct (as it stands it is not).
Danger, Danger Will Robinson! Do not use!
Not much else can be said until Apple corrects this and stops misleading its users into thinking they (Apple) are actually providing a solution. In reality they have created a massive problem.
I pray that someone has finally been listening and this gets fixed in Snow Leopard.

  • Exporting iPhoto pic to Quicktime

I exported a pic which I had made a transition setting as "random" to Quicktime . The transitions are not happening, it is just a still. Any ideas? Thanks

I don't understand how you expect to have a transition on a single pic?

  • LR doesn't maintain file structure

I have tried several times to create a catalog from a folder with a bunch of sub folders. Everytime I create the catalog some of the sub folders are shown above the main folder in the file structure in LR. If photos are later added to a sub folder inside the main folder and I try to sync the sub folder, the name of the sub folder is repeated above the main folder with the photos in it.
This program seems to have a mind of it's own!
I am running XP home and LR 1.3
    Mark Mazzon

Indeed, I did change the user name from karel (backup) to Karel (current install).
Magic! I moved the Fotos folder to a new folder, let Lightroom find the missing top level Fotos folder and tried to import the march directory: it is in the right place!
I will just let it render the previews, then move the Fotos folder to where it was, point Lightroom to the new locatiion again and all should be well!
    Thanks a lot!

  • Opinion Needed...exporting iPhoto pics

I already use time machine for my Mac.  As a second line of defense for my pics, I was thinking of having a second form of backup.  I believe I have a couple options.  1.  Use the "export" feature in iPhoto to place the raw files on an external HD.  2.  In "finder" drag the iPhoto library over to an external HD.  Both seem pretty clean and easy.  I have tested both.  I am looking for other opinions on the two options.  Pros and cons.  Thanks.

Back up the whole Library. Why? Because in the event of a problem it's a whole lot less work than starting over from scratch - which is what you will do if you only back up the photos.
Rather than just dragging the Library to the external, use an app that will do incremental back ups. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But there are many others. Search on MacUpdate
My schedule: My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

  • Exporting iPhoto pics to desktop

Something very strange is happening when I move pictures from my iPhoto to folders on my desktop (i want to organise them).
The horrible part is that the dates are complete wrong as soon as the arrive to my desktop!!!
It's insane and I'm getting worried. My pics from 2006 or 2007 appear now to have been taken in 2009!!!
To some people (like me) dates are essential to design an album.
Am I the only one have this problem? Am I doing something wrong? Has my iMac got a virus?
Any kind of advice will be highly appreciated.
    /J.

There are two kinds of metadata involved when you consider jpeg or other image file.
One is the file data. This is what the Finder shows. This tells you nothing about the contents of the file, just the File itself.
The problem with File metadata is that it can easily change as the file is moved from place to place or exported, e-mailed, uploaded etc.
Photographs have also got both Exif and IPTC metadata. The date and time that your camera snapped the Photograph is recorded in the Exif metadata. Regardless if what the file date says, this is the actual time recorded by the camera.
Photo applications like iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa, Photoshop etc get their date and time from the Exif metadata.
When you export from iPhoto to the Finder new file is created containing your Photo (and its Exif). The File date is - quite accurately - reported as the date of Export.
However, the Photo Date doesn't change.
The problem is that the Finder doesn't work with Exif.
So, your photo has the correct date, and so does the file, but they are different things. To sort on the Photo date you'll need to use a photo app.

  • Exported iphoto pics to folder have no  thumbnail???

Why dont I have thumbnails when I export photos from iphoto 6 to the desk top or file folders? When I try to upload them to betterphoto.com for a class that I am taking 7/8 th of the pictures don't have a thumb nail and Better photo cant up load them into my class web page. I can't figure out why some will upload (very rarely)...they all appear the same. OSx 10.4.6

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Be sure to include the options to check and repair file permissions in the Library.

  • Import iPhotos Events into Photos and maintain previous structure?

I'm a long time iPhoto user and have about 45,000 photos from over a 30 year period that are organized into separate events with the event title being Year-Month-Activity.  Such as "2015-4 Easter".  It was painful to create those events but once they were done it was fantastic. We can quickly and easily pull-up all photos from my daughter's first birthday from 25 years ago, or look at all of her birthday photos. I probably have a thousand events and want to maintain that event structure when I move the library to any new photo program.
I'd like to use the new Photos program but when I imported the photos using one of my 'test' Macbooks ,Photos did (mostly) get it right and maintained most of the events in an album it created called iPhoto events.  That's fine for the legacy photos I'm importing.  HOWEVER as far as I can tell, from that point-on I can no longer add an Event and title it the same way in that iPhoto Events album.  So once I move my legacy library to Photos, the old stuff will be in the IPhotos Events photos and the new photos will have to be placed into a new Album.  So it will force me to split them.
Where this is important is when I point my Plex Server at them so that my extended family can view all of our old photos using Plex.  Currently I can just point Plex to the iPhotos library and it maintains the Events structure when it shows them on the TV.....which is awesome.  Family can see individual events and open just the one they want to see. Not sure how Plex is going to deal with the new Photos app but that's a question for me to post on their forum...
My question for this forum: is there a way to directly import legacy iPhoto events into Photos automatically so that each Event now becomes an Album in Photos with the old Event name?
    Thanks!

Moments in Photo are the new Events.  There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder. To open the sidebar if it's not open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Album/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can be sorted manually.
Ask Apple for more sorting options and/or other features in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • Maintaining file structure after converting

I'm trying to import my music collection into iTunes. My problem is that iTunes makes a directory according to artist, and then places the album inside. This is fine when an entire album has the same artist, but not good when importing sound tracks and various compilations. Is there a way to make iTunes convert and maintain original file stucture?

    Adam,
I think I misread your original post the first time around.
It sounds like you want the compilation tracks in the
    i Compilations
folder and the directions I posted were for moving them out of the folder. So instead of changing the "Yes" to a "No", you want to do just the opposite: change the "No" to a "Yes".
Anyways, it's won't be a problem because as long as iTunes is keeping the
    i iTunes Music
folder organized (Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced tab > General sub-tab), you can switch the compilation status back and forth as often as you like. It doesn't matter what it is when you import the songs, it can be changed.
I'm not sure just what the "major issues" you're having are so post back explaining your present situation a bit more clearly.
As well, you might want to have a look at these links to the Apple Knowledge Base:

  • Relocating masters while maintaing file structure.

I have finally upgraded to an Intel machine from my old G5 and need to move my Aperture images.  It has been no problem with the Library images but the referenced images are causing the problem.  I have my referenced images organized into my own set of folders on the old machine and I need to move these images to the new machine while maintaing the folder structure that I have.  I know that I can use the Relocate Masters to do this but that will take me a long time.  I have over 10,000 images sorted into just over 300 folders.  Is there a way to do this all at once or am I doomed to spend the next several weeks sitting at the computers?

Select the previews with the broken links, look under file-manage referenced images.
Dialog will show the disconnected files in upper part of dialog, and a navigation area in the lower part, select one of the disconnected files from the top, find it's mate in the lower. If they are all in the same folder hit reconnect all button and they should all magically reattach.
There's probably some better instructions in the help file.

  • Import - Add to catalog won't maintain file structure

    Deaar all,
    I use Lightroom 4.3 on Mac OS-X 10.8.3. I recentrly clean-reinstalled the computer.
I copy my images from a memory card onto my harddrive. My folder structure looks like this:
    .../<user>/Fotos/<year>/<month>/<date-event>/<images>.
Before reinstalling I could just import my images into Lightroom by adding to the catalog and the Folder structure in Lightroom would be the same as on the drive.
Now, if I try to import images, Lightroom creates in its catalog (the left of the Library window) new folders "on top of" the existing 'Fotos' folder. So I end up with something that looks like:
    <Drive>
    <Year>
       <Month>
    Fotos
<Year>   (can be the same as above)
<Month> (can be the same as above)
When I try to show the parent folder, I get an error message at the top level (also shown the folder hierarchy where I want 2013-03 in the Fotos hierarchy):
What do I need to do to make Lightroom duplicate the folder structure on-disk during import?
    Thank you for your help,
    Karel

Indeed, I did change the user name from karel (backup) to Karel (current install).

  • Export Iphoto-library to file structure

I have been searching around for quite some while how to export the Iphoto-library into a 'classic' directory file structure (e.g. folder/event; folder/album,...).
Main raison for doing this is for backup and consolidation purposes: I have quite some 1000nds of pictures on traditional directory structures on my NAS; I want to consolidate this with the Iphoto data I have, without imoprting all the existing stuff into Iphoto.
I have found in fact 2 applications which should serve this purpose:
    - the Iphoto to disk solution: http://www.iphototodisk.com, which seems no longer updated and the album export-feature was only in rel. 4 beta available
    - Photoshare: a scripting based tool, but I experienced some issues witht the export of albums (empty...)
    - a number of scripts found on teh internet.
I also read somewhere that a good alternativ eis to upgrade to Aperture, which seem sto have a better export-capability, including an export which allows to export to full library accoring to events and albums.
I'm surprise that there are not more apps availble for this,as it seems to be a hot topic on the internet.
    Any advice ?

  • Exporting iPhoto Library files to external HD

I'm running out of HD space on my MBPro. Exported large number of files from Library, which includes a lot of Nikon NEF files (RAW); however, my MBPro 150 GB HD, shows little change. I looked in Pictures/iPhoto Library, right-clicking on iPhoto Library to expose contents, and see the NEF files are still there.
What is best way of transferring all files out of iPhoto Library to an external drive?
    Thanks

If you want a way to maintain the keywords, titles and comments on those photos and be abel to get them back into iPhoto easily put the photos you want to move into an album or a single event, select the album or event and use the Share->Burn menu option.
This will create a mini library on disk that can be mounted in iPhoto to view the photos and, if needed, copy them back into the library.
Or you can create a second library on the external HT and copy the photos (either in an album or event) to it from the working library with iPhoto Library Manager (which will maintain the keywords, titles, comments, etc.) and then delete the photos from the working library.
    Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Error "Encountered an error while exporting the data. View the lof file (DPR-10126)

    Hello,
I would like to have sugestions and help to solve a problem in IS 4.2.
I've created a view from two tables, joined together with the key from each one.
Then i've binded the rule with the view (mentioned above) created and calculated score for it.
The calculation is successful, however when i try to export all failed data i have the following error:
"Encountered an error while exporting the data. View the lof file (DPR-10126)"
When exporting failed data from calculations made directly to the datasources i do not encounter any problem, but when i try to export all data to CSV file (not only the 500 results limit) i have this kind of error.
However, when i visualize the data from the view created, it is also possible to export to csv file.
Resuming, the error occurs only when exporting all failed data from the view.
Can anyone help with this issue?
    Thx
    Best Regards,

    Hello,
    Your information is correct.
I've just confirmed it in the 4.2 SP3 Release Notes and they specifically refer to this issue.
A user who has 'View objects' rights for the project and a failed rule connection cannot export the failed data. This issue has been fixed in this release.
Thank you very much for your input.
    Best Regards,

  • Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File - Export - Album name with number).

Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File -> Export -> Album name with number).
Exporting a single Event retains the Event name which is what I'd expect. But highlighting more than one event and exporting it renames the images to Events 001.JPG, Event 002.JPG etc.
I was recently on holidays and had all my events nicely split on Dad's computer but when I went to export it I couldn't retain any of this information. Now I have to replicate this all again on my computer.
It wasn't possible to export the entire library as the external drive was fat32 format an I didn't want all of it. It would be nice to export a bunch of events to someone and have it retain the name.
Does anyone have a work around or will this be fixed at some point by Apple?
