Export Issues in Iphoto 11'
I am having some serious issues trying to move my iphoto library to an external hard drive. I have read just about every article on here about the issue but none help at all. I keep going to File > Export and it brings up the options box for exporting. After i select my settings it asks for the new location, when i try to tell it to go to the external hard drive it just goes back to the previous diologue box and does nothing. I read that i should try exporting it to another file folder on my desktop then transfer the file and then delete it off my notebook hard drive. When i try to tell it to export to the desktop it does the same exact thing everytime. I am not an idiot and have been using my same set up for about 4 years now, something is a miss, and i have no idea what it is. Also my HD on my notebook is basically out of space and i have been deleting older photos and music to make room for the disks to be useable, and i cant keep doing this. I have a 1TB TC as well that i use to keep music and stuff on, (doesn't work like it should either) but i need all my photos on a portable drive. Getting unbelieveably frustrated at this point. Hopefully somebody can save my *** on this one.
James
Do not export anything at all. If iPhoto is open, Quit it.
Go to your Home folder inside the Users folder, and open the Pictures folder inside it. Drag the iPhoto Library from there onto your external drive's icon and drop it. The entire library will be copied intact onto the external drive.
Now click the iPhoto icon in your Dock while holding down the Option key. iPhoto will ask what library you wish to use. Navigate to the library on the external drive and select it. The library will open exactly as it did previously. If it does so and everything is in order, delete the iPhoto Library from your Home > Pictures folder to recover the hard drive space it now occupies.
Remember that just as the library needed to be backed up to another drive when it resided on your internal drive, it still needs to be backed up to another drive after you move it. That means you'll need a second external hard drive on which to back it up.
Remember also that if you don't have the external drive connected to your computer each time you open iPhoto in the future, it won't be able to use that library, and any pictures you import at such a time will be stored in a new iPhoto library that will be created on the internal drive.

Exporting photos from iPhoto to a hard drive or cd
Hi , when I export my photos to a hard drive formatted by mac, the sizes of the files sometime double. A 5 MB photo becomes 10 to 12 MB. My camera is not even capable of shooting so many megapixels resluting in this size. When I was using PC this never happened. Am I doing something wrong here ? Can you help me on this issue ?
Drag and drop only gets your iPhoto previews. This is a "good enough for most purposes" version of the image, but not appropriate for back up. The dpi will be different for a start.
I made the setting the highest resolution and the highest qualty.
Not sure what you mean by "resolution" here but "quality" refers to the amount of compression used at export. Remember, iPhoto does not export the file your imported unless you choose to export the Original. What it does is export the Photo to a new file. In this case, iPhoto is using less compression than your camera, that's why the file size is bigger.
This User Tip

has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
What are you trying to do here? Back up? Something else? -
Exporting video from iPhoto to Desktop
I take a video with my iPhone4.
I download it to iPhoto (9.3.2) on my MBP Retina (Mtn Lion).
I export it from iPhoto to my desktop.
When I play it on my desktop (QT 10.2), I get no picture and no sound.
What's happening? If you export as a Jpeg then you're telling it to export a movie as a still image. Jpeg is a format for photos, not video
iPhoto performs no compression on video at all. It has no relevance to the issue at hand.

Hi
I wan to export all my photos from iphoto to open them with another software.
I would like to export all pictures at once and above all keep the organization of my events folders.
Is there a way? the export feature form iphoto is really weak.
Thank you allI'm using iPhoto 08. I was just curious why the originals are stored by year and not event. I want to backup all my photos onto a USB drive (even though I'm also running Time Machine - I just want some extra coverage). The last few backups I've done were by dragging my Library icon in my Pictures folder over to the USB icon on the desktop. I was noodling around on the Apple help forums today and happened to read your response to the thread I'm posting in right now. I never knew exactly where my original photos (taken right off the camera) were stored and it was interesting to read that they're right there in their own folder. Who woulda thunk that?? Anyway, I read your response and went to Finder to investigate and when I opened my Originals folder found all those "years" subfolders. You had told the original poster that he would find his original photos in there listed by Event, and I was wondering why mine are by year.
I've had my Mac for a little more than a year now, and I'm still learning. I had some issues right after I got the Mac with transferring my photos to it from my Dell - I had them stored on a CD and did something wrong when I tried to transfer them into iPhoto. I posted to the forums and everything turned out okay, but I'm still a little nervous with doing backup.
Should I just plug in my USB and drag the Originals folder over to its icon? How do I backup future photos? Do I have to keep dragging the entire "Originals" folder over and overwriting the photos from my last backup?
Thank you in advance. Any info you may provide is MUCH appreciated!

How do I fix the below sync issue between iPhoto, iTunes, my iPad2/iPhones
I am having this issue with iPhoto'11. I had the issue at one point in iPhoto '09 but eventually I fixed it but I don't know how. I was told it's a problem with my iPhoto library.
Here's the problem: When syncing with either my iPad2/iPhone4/iPhone3GS it tells me not all photos were were synced to my devices because there is not enough space, even though there clearly is enough space. I don't think it happens with my AppleTV2 but maybe that's because it's streaming, not syncing, to my ATV2.
Any thoughts on how to fix? I'm also seeing that only the places and albums icons are included within the photo app on each device. Do I need to somehow repair my iPhoto library?Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1 and #6.

Hello!
I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?
Thank you a lot! Kind regards,
xanacarfran2008Is this waht you want to do?
It's built into the File Export function of iPhoto 9 (11). Select what every photos you want and use that option to put each photo in a folder with the Event title it came from as in this test of six randomly picked photos:

How do I export photos from iphoto to a memory card?
How do I export photos from iphoto to a memory card?
Not using the correct structure. Camera's use a very exact structure and the only way the camera will see photos on the card is for them to be in that exact structure

How can I compare a (partial) export folder from iPhoto to an event in iPhoto to find images not exported? Or better yet, how can I export selected events to a new iPhoto library or an existing iPhoto library with events, titles and keywords intact?

0x9256f000 - 0x926ffff0 GThere have been a few of these threads since the release on 10.9.2. It seems that there is a bug in 10.9.2 that triggers the crash - only with v8.1.2
Report this to Apple:

Hopefully they'll fix it with the next update to the O.S.
Unfortunately there is no known fix at this time except to update to iPhoto 11, which requires a purchase. -
Export pix from iPhoto 4.0.3 to a digital picture frame (Tiger OS)
Can't succeed in downloading pix using a card reader. Desired pix moved to an album, then export selected. In dialog box, file export and album name are selected, jpg extension selected, pixel size changed and use extension is selected. The jpg file type and pixel size items conform to frame mfgr specs. The system proceeds to do something as the 100+ photos are supposedly transferred. After proper disconnection from the Mac, the Xd card is placed in the frame but no pix show up. In trying different sizes and extensions, the system prompts that these pictures already exist, as if the pictures are loaded into the card. I have tried creating a desktop file and dragging the album from iPhoto to the desktop with no success ( a subsequent move from the desktop to the card reader icon was planned). How can I be sure that the pix are on the card? How does the system know I want the pix to go on the card since it was never selected? Vince V
Vince V,
How does the system know I want the pix to go on the card since it was never selected?
Any time you export files from iPhoto (or save files in a Save or Save As dialog box in another application) you have to designate a location for the exported (or saved) files. If you did not designate the Xd card as your location, then the system does not know you want the exports saved there. Where did your exports go? Can you do a Finder Search for them?
Desired pix moved to an album, then export selected. In dialog box, file export and album name are selected, jpg extension selected, pixel size changed and use extension is selected.
Did you remember to select all of the pix in the album before selecting export? It has been a very long time since I've used version 4, but in iPhoto 6 when you click the Export button in the dialog box you described it opens to a standard Mac Save As dialog box. That second box is where you specify the location for the exported files. Are you getting that dialog?
I have tried creating a desktop file and dragging the album from iPhoto to the desktop with no success ( a subsequent move from the desktop to the card reader icon was planned).
I would recommend a 2-part move, just as you describe here. What did happen when you tried to drag the photos to the desktop folder?

Problems exporting photos in iPhoto 6
When I try to export photos from iPhoto to my hard drive, I get an error message that says:
"Directory Exists: exists as a directory at this destination. Aborting export."
This directory doesn't exist - I've tried creating several different folders, but to no avail. If I drag the photos directly to my desktop from iPhoto they work fine, but I can't export resized photos this way.
Has anyone else seen this problem, and if so, is there a fix for it? Thanks in advance!LH , i quote you, "
As I said previously if you want a BIG image export as a TIFF and it will be very big - but not any better quality than the 1.2 mb JPEG
and something is wrong with your observations - if you have a 9 mb JPEG (which is not really likely)"
first let me say, i am not blind and i am looking at the info on the image in iPhoto. second, i know how to read the info. i have been doing this for a long time. i have some images that have loaded higher than that from the camera. i have a full frame camera with 25mb and it takes higher mb images.
keith, yes alitle is understandable but that much is not. i am not changing the size when exporting. also, the only problem with exporting original, i might have tweaked or cropped in iPhoto. -
First of all, I'm running iPhoto 8.1.2, on a system running 10.6.8. The issue described below isn't something that occurred suddenly after an update, as far as I can remember.
There are two issues: first of all, iPhoto won't import my JPEGs that I processed with Lightroom. I did that so many times, and there was never an issue, but for some reason, now I get the message that the file is in an unreadable format. To find out whether the problem resides in iPhoto or in the files, I took a picture that I already had in my library, renamed and tried to import it again, to no avail. Also, I opened the new pictures in Preview, and there was no problem there.
Secondly, I can browse through my events, and see my thumbnails. However, when I then double-click on any picture, iPhoto just shows a black void -- even though it says '1 photo selected in 1 event'. This applies to all photos in the library.
I would really really appreciate feedback on this issue, as iPhoto is my main image displaying/sharing application. Thanks for the tip. I tried it, but the problem persist in the other account. As I said before, I also tried to reinstall iPhoto, after using AppCleaner to uninstall first. Something else I could do is uninstall all iLife components, and then reinstall the whole suite. Is it enough just to clean up iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and Garage Band?
Another thing I (re-)tried is to use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library. To no avail, alas, but at least it provides a log with the error message, part of which I reproduce below. At the same time, iPhoto complains about the 'unreadable format' after every Event that ILM tries to rebuild.
Here's the log message:

Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto?
Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto? Changing the quality of the print changes the size of the saved file and thus impacts the speed at which it is moved on the internet. But other than size of the file, what is the advantage of changing the quality?
I have no idea why you would want to do anything
Some people want lower quality to reduce file size for different reasons
It is an option - if you do pot want to do that do not use that option

EXPORT PHOTOS IN IPHOTO TO A USB DEVICE
I can't seem to export photos from IPhoto to a USB device that holds a 4GB chip. I keep getting a message "unable to create/volumes". I click on the album I created, then click on export, then click on the device, but no luck???? Help, thanks!
If you are using a CF card, look closely at it. There should be a little switch on the side. Make sure it is not in the "lock" position. For a large example, check this out:
http://www.sandisk.com/microsites/ExtremeProSDHC/index.html
Otherwise there may be some damage to the file system. Once all the images are safely stored on the computer (and your backup!) try to reformat the card in the camera and try again.
