Exporting for e book

Waht setting do I use for exporting my document for a e book publication? Thank you.

What form is the book in now? A Word file? I seriously doubt you'd be able to import it into InDesign and lay it out by tomorrow so you could export to Kindle format.
Do you own InDesign? What version?
Here's the best beginner's book on InDesign I know:

But if you're on a short deadline, and it's in Word format, you might look at this:

  • When I rearrange the order of my photos in an album, the order does not stick for exporting for a book.

    I manally rearrange my photos in an album, the order does not stick when I export to a folder in order to make a book.  Also, if I have given a title to a photo, it does not seem to export with the other pictures in an album.

    It's a little vague on what you're workflow is.  So I'll make a guess about the book: if you're dragging those photos into an iPhoto book they will be sorted by date.  So you would have to use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date (with 1 minute between photos) menu option on those photos in the album before dragging them onto the book icon.
    Photos exported to a folder on the hard drive will be sorted by the Finder either alphanumerically or chronologically.  To get them in the manual order that's in the album you'll need to rename them via the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text with a sequential number added to each photo.  Then export to the Desktop with the option to use the Title as the new File name.

  • Icc profiles for aperture book printing...

    Do the Aperture Book Printing folks provide icc profiles so I can soft-proof the images beforehand?

    Please note that monitors provide fairly accurate color when the images are saved in an sRGB color space, however, presses are not as reliable...
    Well, Mike, thanks for sharing the info here.
    At one point, in Mark's email to you, as mentioned above in his email from Apple, I have to say I am a little surprised about his statement re: monitors provide fairly accurate... when the images saved in an sRGB colour space...
    It is very tricky statement where it depends on how we define the term "fairly accurate" in monitors. What we don't know if Mark meant by when monitor has been "properly" set up as profiled and calibrated with high-grade calibration hardware. Unless IF the monitor has been proper profiled and calibrated, then his statement would be correct. But IF not profiled or calibrated at all, I am afraid that his statement is incorrect.
    Now these days with newer monitors and newer Apple laptops with better monitor technology, it is still need to be properly profiled and calibrated. It just depends on individual's preference, desire and the purpose of such project whatever someone is working on. While majority of Aperture users' are probably mostly professional photographers or those who are into photography savvy, then colour-managed workflow is a norm. For me, it IS absolute A MUST colour-managed workflow.
    Although, I do a heavy post-production workflow on MacPro where I always have my monitors calibrated. I don't typically calibrate my laptop, though. Because sometimes I forgot to turn off the automatic ambient light in System Preference in Display section. It is a little inconvenience in that case. Unless if I am being away on photographic trips far from Canada abroad, then it is a different story. But not always bring my calibration device with me. Too inconvenience to haul it around at the airports etc. So colour-managed workflow is a must with MacPro in my studio.
    However, other individuals have their own preference, comfort zone and the purpose of such project. Perhaps their workflow set up differently than yours or mine, that is ok.
    But in that email you received from someone at Apple didn't make it clear about that statement about 'fairly accuracy'.
    Then something else is something else actually--when Apple guy said presses are not always.... Again, that is why it is important that you get monitor properly profiled and calibrated. Once it is done properly, then it is all good. But remember, you need to re-calibrate monitor once a week or every two weeks or once month. In order to get pretty close to printed output, always a good idea to soft proof. If needed to make slightly conservative adjustments to your satisfaction or level of expectation, the output would be fairly close to what it is appeared in monitor. When I mean "fairly close" in comparing the output to what you are seeing in monitor with these post-production images used in that output, in fairness, I would estimate fairly close in terms of anywhere in range between 92 to 95 percent - that is very fair conservative perspective on how close in the output vs monitor. It is truly, really, truly rare to get the output 100% as obvious and precise as you are seeing in monitor. If that is the case, and if that is true FOR that person achieved this, this probably means takes that person many years to perfect his/her colour-managed workflow for that matter. Never has been that pretty close, but I'd be shocked if I see mine aced right on spot. I'd be lying to you if I get all output perfect as appeared in my monitors. If I did, that would be incorrect statement.
    It seems a lot of factors and things to do and things need to require in a thoroughly colour-managed workflow production, it is how it is done. But this can also means save money, effort and time if done properly right from the beginning.
    In fairness, I would really wish that guy from Apple should have said a little more obvious and precise with his definition of fairly accuracy with monitors. It doesn't says what kind of monitors he refers to. Low quality, cheap monitors deliver good results? Lot of factors need to be looked at for consideration for yourself.
    Of course, as you can tell that colour management topic is pretty heavy, highly technical and everything in deep thinking with world of colours. It takes years for an individual (both pros and non-pro individuals) finally understand what it is all about. Again, technologies evolve rapid for the better in many cases for new monitors, commercial print equips, advanced ink technology, advanced paper production technology... That goes on effortless endless, actually.
    Hope some of thoughtfu perspective and experience be of some interest, and it is obvious that this discussion probably will attract some more excitement discussion, the more the better. So that every other Aperture users who have the similar issues, they'll definitely want to come to here... And learn and share.
    I also use Blurb too. They are getting better than it was once a couple years ago when Blurb first started. As they add more variety of book sizes, types of paper stock and things like that. This also give someone some flexibility in choosing workflow production using Blurb software or online bookmaking or using PDF to Book service for those who are advanced users that use InDesign layout design app. In that case of PDF to Book, the advanced users would need to download Blurb's preset plug-in to put in InDesign in order to export the PDF output to meet and integrate into Blurb's Preflight Checklist at the time of upload. I use PDF to Book service with InDesign, etc. It is fairly self explanatory and easy to follow steps. Also slightly off topic, but when making Blurb book, to get most out of their product and service with Blurb, in that case, they came up with brilliant resource called Colour Resource Centre designed for making more beautiful books. In that resource centre, it is easy to read and follow.
    I would think this probably shed some insights and understanding the basics of colour management, the whole thing all about this, that and the other all together.
    I would also want other high-powered hard-core Aperture users share their experience with Aperture Book printing service. I'd be happy to share my experience about making Aperture Book vs. Blurb Book through PDF to Book service. However, I would think the export to PDF from Aperture probably has it's own different setting or slightly different configuration inside the PDF engine on Mac for Blurb book. There has been some discussion about wanting a Aperture Plug In for Blurb Book. blurb has been quiet on it, I take that they probably will not develop a special plug-in for Aperture Users. Sorry if it is a little off topic. But somehow someone in the discussion mention Blurb. so...
    Anyhow, hope that helps.

  • [CS5][JS] Efficiently export 100+ page book as PDF?

    Hello,
    I'm creating an InDesign Book via javascript, and this book will contain more than 100 single page InDesign Documents. My script to create the book works fine - but takes anywhere from 5-8 minutes to run.
    However, when I run my script to open that book and export as a PDF, it takes 10+ minutes just to export the PDF, and then it times out on our InDesign Development server. I'm wondering if I can more efficiently write my script to create the book, as well as my script to export the book as a PDF. Both scripts are very simple:
    CreateInDesignBook();
    function CreateInDesignBook(){
        var myBook = app.books.add('c:/myBook.indb');
        myBook.bookContents.add('file_1.indd');
        myBook.bookContents.add('file_2.indd');
        // and so on, with potentially 100-200 more .indd files added
        myBook.close(SaveOptions.YES);
    ExportInDesignBook();
    function ExportInDesignBook(){
        var myBook = app.open('c:/myBook.indb');
        var myFile = new File('myPDF.pdf');
        myBook.exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType, myFile, false, app.pdfExportPresets.item('[Smallest File Size]'));
        myBook.close(SaveOptions.NO);
    Thanks in advance for any help/advice!
    -Lloyd

    As for creating my book, I have found that if I create the single Indesign pages (each contain a page-size PDF) in increments of 50 pages per document (so could have 3 documents of 50 pages each getting added to my book), the books are created MUCH faster (less than a minute). However, exporting that book as a PDF still took roughly 11 minutes.
    Does anyone know if there is a faster way to export this? I'm just trying to avoid time-outs on the server. Is there a way I could add pages/documents to an existing PDF (instead of exporting the entire book/document as one PDF)? If that were the case I could just add 50 pages at a time to the PDF and maybe not even need the book anymore?
    Ultimately, I just need an efficient way to get all pages into a single PDF.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

  • CS3 XDCam export for FCP

    Currently running CS3 PP on PC.  Shooting xdcam that creates .mp4 files.  We have Matrox boards so editng in PP with 720p 60fps natively is no problem, no rendering with project settings set up properly.  Editing 2 to 3 and half minute features that need to be exported for use with FCP for broadcast in a production truck.  MOV files as quicktime makes the most sense, but what codec and how to create the best looking 720p HD feature while not giving the producer a huge file.  I've been told by him that a minute of HD video should be around 1 gig.  Do I need a third party (Sorenson, etc.) to create properly or use Adobe Media Encoder.  Or should I export as a movie.
    Really looking forward to getting some opinions and help on this.  Thanks!
    Tom

    You could ask the guys using FCP what codec(s) they like...thats your best bet.
    My producer for this project is not the "easiest" to deal with if you get my drift so to speak, won't give simple answers or take the time to figure it out and move on, so I'm left to figure it out for him.  He's never wrong
    you could try tests of small segments of your timeline ...using QT ( mov ) using jpeg 2000, animation ( RLE ? ) and UT YUL2 422 ( what renderer are you using for the project in premiere ? )..  these would make large files, probably have to deliver via external HD.
    Trying to keep files size small, playing out of his mac book and outputing in the production truck
    Basically fcp likes pro res 422 type stuff..I would ask those guys using FCP what would work best for them.
    pro ress 422 is not a codec that cs3 pp has as an option.  I did watch the producer use streamclip third party converter to get it to play out and it looked great during last night's broadcast here in Florida.  I think he said export as apple dv/dvcpro - ntsc, 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) and that worked for him.  When I bring that file into my project storyboard it is 16x9 but not scaled to my project specs.
    Thanks for your input, great to get my first reply in the forum!  Just recently joined after owning our system since Jan. 2009.

  • Is it possible to save or export an e-book chapter from Adobe Digital Editions? Is it possible to export or save from Adobe Digital Editions to an Adobe pdf?

    Is it possible to save or export an e-book chapter from Adobe Digital Editions? Is it possible to export or save from Adobe Digital Editions to an Adobe pdf?

    I hope you won't see this as rude, but what you are missing is the obvious point that Adobe are in business to make money. So they put as little in Adobe Reader as they can, so people are motivated to buy stuff. Every development intended for Reader has severe limitations on feasibility and techniques for this reason; it's a huge (but very common) mistake to just develop for Acrobat and assume Reader will follow.

  • Lightroom stalls on trying to export from the book module

    Lightroom stalls on trying to export from the book module to either PDF or Blurb. Progress bar at the top left just shows "Exporting book...rendering cover.untitled DNG". I have even tried a single page low resolution book but no difference. This happened in Lightroom 4 and still after upgrading to Lightroom 5. I have tried I have tried also unchecking all the background options.

    When you click on <Send Book to Blurb> a dialog should come up that asks for your ID and password for your Blurb account. I don't know if Blurb ships to Norway - you probably can find out at the Blurb website. But I don't think that this is the problem here since you also cannot export a PDF or JPGs.
    I don't know of any specifics why this is not possible for you but it's worth trying to replace the Preference File.
    This file can go "funny" and is then responsible for all kinds of strange behavior of Lr. The remedy is replacing the Preference File.
    BTW: Re-installing Lr or updating / upgrading Lr does not replace the Preference File since it is designed to "survive" upgrades.

  • How do I batch "Export For Web" from Quicktime, one at a time

    I have 20 quicktime movies in folder A.
    I would like to "Export for Web" for all 3 options (iPhone, iPhone (cellular), and Desktop) to folder B.
    How do I create an automator script to complete this action one at a time, until they are finished converting?
    Also, I do not want to delete the originals.
    I have never used Automator, but I'm guessing it should be easy to execute a shut down command when it is done...
    Thanks a lot!

    iTunes does not handle the import of photos/videos from the iPhone's Camera Roll.
    If this is not the computer you sync your iPhone with, you should have been provided a warning message that your iPhone is associated with an iTunes library on another computer and when trying to transfer any iTunes content from a different computer, a warning message is provided indicating that all iTunes content on the iPhone will be erased first.
    When connecting an iPhone to iTunes on another computer, none of the options under the various tabs for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes are selected automatically. This means you had to select Sync Contacts under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your wife's computer.
    Assuming you are syncing contacts with a supported address book app on your computer, connect your iPhone to Tunes on your computer and without syncing, under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences below the Advanced section, select Contacts for replace info on this iPhone followed by a sync.
    For importing photos/videos from the Camera Roll which can be done with a computer that is not used for syncing the iPhone since syncing with iTunes is not involved.

  • Error: is an invalid name for a book file

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to export about 20 files to pdf from a books panel, but when I try this the program just hangs. When I open up the book panel I get the following error:
    "is an invalid name for a book file"
    I wondered if anyone has come across this error before or knows what it means? I tried to create a new book and reinsert the files but I'm still getting the same problem when I try to go to pdf.
    Really appreciate any advice.

    Sorry to come back to this - I've tried both suggestions but it hasn't fixed the problem. I've tried though to open up individual chapter files and export to pdf but the odd thing is that when I export these individual files to pdf interactive they work fine but when I export to a print pdf the program crashes. Each of the files have a heap of cross-references within them so I don't know if that's contributing to the problem, but even so when I export to print pdf, I don't check off bookmarks and hyperlinks and it still crashes. In fact I even made a copy of one of the files and deleted all the cross-references and then tried again to export to print-pdf but it still crashed.
    I even exported one of the chapters to the .idml file format and then re-opened it up and saved it. I then exported to print-pdf and it crash again.
    The only method that seems to work is when I don't open a file, ie. I just select it from within the books panel, I then export that single chapter to print-pdf and I make sure "bookmarks" and "hyperlinks" are uncheck. If I do it this, I can successfully export a print pdt without it crashing. The strange thing though is that if I open that chapter up and export it in the same way, then ID crashes. It doesn't make sense.
    I just don't know how to troubleshoot further. Does anyone have any further tips or advice that I can try?
    Appreciate any further help.

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when I export for epubs

    Every time I choose "Export book for digital editions...." in the book menu, the program sometimes (but not always) exports to the epub format -- but then InDesign crashes and closes.  Sometimes there is an epub saved; sometimes there is not.
    This is the error message I get:  "Runtime error:  R6025 - pure virtual function call".  Makes no sense to me, and it happens every time, no matter what other programs I do or do not have open.
    I'm running Win XP SP3 and have plenty of memory.
    Thanks.

    Good morning (for me, at least). OK, let's try to catch up.
    I am still not 100% clear what your actual problem is. Perhaps you can start by restating it clearly and unambiguously.
    Has it changed since June?
    You might post a screenshot of the way you have the TOC set up.
    But the first step is to figure out if it happens with a brand new document that is untainted by your existing document. Perhaps something in your current document is making InDesign misbehave. So make sure that TOC export works right from a fresh document.
    After that, then the task is to figure out what about your document is causing the problem. Exporting to IDML is a good step to clearing corruption, but is not 100% definitive. But if it works, great. Other steps including using the Pages (panel) > Move Pages function to move pages between documents, and also exporting individual stories to InDesign Tagged Text and then re-importing them into new documents. You can also export some items as snippets, though this is likely to have the same effect as IDML, but somewhat more self-contained (think "IDML Export of this page only.")
    In short, this is Divide and Conquer. The problem could be in a story, in a style, on a page, in an image, etc., etc.
    Additionally, you might want to consider ponying up $40 and engaging Adobe Support: http://adobe.com/go/supportportal.
    Unfortunately support for CS4 is somewhat waning (it is 3 versions old!), and Adobe Support is not always stellar at solving problems quickly. Still, they are an option to consider.
    Also, I'm definitely not an EPUB person. Hopefully when you post the details of what exactly you're doing some of the EPUB folks will still be paying attention to this thread and can point out any obvious issues they are aware if ("Hey! It's a known bug if you use the letter é in your EPUB TOC! Just remove it and you're good!" or whatever).
    You ask:
    Do you know what I can do to fix the stack problem?  Is that an Adobe problem or a Windows problem?  I'm waaay beyond the limits of my expertise here.
    It's not a "problem" per se -- the stack is a data structure that stores state about functions calls made by programs. Under normal circumstances, when a program crashes -- that is, when the operating system detects that a program has done something it should never do, such as tried to access a region of memory that does not belong to it, the operating system forcibly terminates the program -- the stack reflects information about the function that was currently executing, and the function that called it, and the function that called it, etc., etc., typically 20-50 levels deep.
    Depending on exactly why the program faulted, sometimes this information is not available. For instance, if the program failure that caused the crash involved corruption on the stack.
    Often the stack can give us useful clues about the nature of the crash, and those clues can help us avoid the crash. Simple example: "Oh, this crash is related to the third party extension Frobozz Magic Font! Turn it off!"
    I just posted a question about the corrupted stack in the Microsoft forum, and they replied only Adobe can fix it.  It's apparently not a Microsoft problem.
    They are, to a first order, correct. When InDesign crashes, it's an Adobe problem. The stack issue is a low-level diagnostic and is unlikely to be a real problem. But certainly no one could fix it without altering the InDesign program, and only Adobe can do that.
    I'm getting pretty nervous about this; I have clients screaming for their books, and I'll have to refund some money if this isn't solved.  Whatever you can do would really be appreciated!
    I think you need to present us with a lot more information about your problem.
    Precise steps to reproduce it.
    Screenshots showing how you have it set up.
    Copies of files that exhibit it.
    That we can try to reproduce it, see if it is specific to your machine or your document, give recommendations on how you can work around or avoid it, etc.
    And seperately, aside from all of those things, is getting the problem fixed. Though if it happens in CS4 and not in CS5.5, well, then it's unlikely that a fix will be forthcoming. Adobe just isn't updating CS4 any more. They're hardly updating CS5 and CS5.5, and CS6 is on the horizon.
    Oh, and if you're willing to throw money at the problem, you can look at upgrading. EPUB support has changed dramatically in CS5.5 (for the better, I am told, but I don't speak from personal experience), so it's likely that any problems you saw with it under CS4 will be very very different [and hopefully gone!] in CS5.5.
