Exporting from Illustrator to Photoshop: Not Enough Memory To Save File

Exporting from Illustrator to Photoshop: Not Enough Memory To Save File
I have plenty of memory (6 GB) and the files I try to export are not very big (some less than 5 MB). Yet, I keep getting the above message: Not Enough Memory To Save File
Any suggestions?
Many thanks!

Up-thread, John Joslin mentioned that "memory" is more than RAM. It is RAM, Virtual Memory, Scratch Disk, and is also governed by the allocations for your Adobe programs (in this case).
The first thing that I would explore is the Windows Virtual Memory (Page File) settings. This ARTICLE might give you some tips.
Also, see this ARTICLE on setting up a computer for an editing session. It's geared more towards doing video editing, but applies to PS work too.
Then, go to Edit>Preferences in both PS and AI, and check the allocation of your memory. Too often, people run that up, and then they starve the OS, or any other programs.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Not enough memory to save file.

I am getting this message when I try and export an AI file as .psd file. Illustrator is the only app open on a new 24" iMac running 10.5.4. The illustrator file itself is only about 5 mb. Yet . . .I get the message "Not enough memory to save file." Any thoughts, gang?

I know this is an old thread, but anyone trying to export large files out of Illustrator CS5 (maybe even CS6 and CC) still face this "not enough memory" challenge.
To summarize the above comments, this is what worked for me...
    1. Using Windows 7 or Windows 8, and Illustrator CS5
    2. Close Illustrator (if open)
    3. Right click the Illustrator application > Properties > Compatibility (tab)
    4. "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" > Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
    5. "Run this program as an administrator" (optional, but recommended)
    6. Apply (or "OK")
    7. Open Illustrator > Open your Illustrator file
    8. File > Export > (DO NOT CLICK SAVE YET...)
    9. (File Save Dialog Box) > At the bottom of the dialog box, tick to select "Use Artboards" > Range "1"
    10. (name your file) > "Save"
    11. (Photoshop Export Options) > Select color mode > Select Resolution > Select "Flat Image" > Select "Anti-Alias
    12. Click "OK"
Doing everything above allowed me to save a very large Illustrator file as a 300ppi RGB Photoshop file and avoid the "Not enough memory..." problem.
I hope this helps, but as usual: your mileage may vary... Shalom!

  • Illustrator CS5 Error - "Not enough memory to save the file"

    Hey guys,
I'm experiencing difficulties in exporting website from .AI to .PSD using Illustrator CS5.1 under Windows7 Home Premium 64bit. The error message says "Not enough memory to save the file".
I can assure you that i've got enough memory for scratch disks and my computer is powerful enough to handle this operation. The funny thing is that i am able to export the very same .Ai file using Illustrator CS5.1 under Windows XP 32bit on different PC.
I've tried to find a solution online, but it gave no satisfying results so far. So, i think the problem comes from the operating system, but i don't know how to fix it... any suggestions?
    Thanks, Steve.

Sad to say I'm running into the same problem with a 40KB file.....
(download the following file and use it)
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8c/2.4_GHz_Wi-Fi_channels_%28802.11b%2Cg_W LAN%29.svg
    File -> Open
    Modify the file slightly:
    doubleclick the image
remove the channel 14 info  (the text block "14" & "2.484",  the T shaped path, the dotted half circle path)
drag a square around the "Channel", "Center Frequency", "(GHz)" text blocks and hold left shift and press the left arrow until the selected items are tighter to the rest of the image
select the bold base line, grab the right middle point to shrink the line (dragging from right to the left) until 'intersect' shows up, then release
click the top left "Back One Level" arrow 2 times so that you are back to the top level (out of isolation mode)
File -> Export -> Choose PSD
    Export Options (all default settings)
    Color Model RGB
    Medium (150ppi)
    Write Layers
      Preserve Text Editability
      Maximum Editability
    Antialias
    Click OK.....
    POOF! ERROR!
"Not enough memory to save the file"
note: saving as .ai file before exporting doesn't solve the problem
    My Environment:
    Adobe Illustrator 15.0.2
    Win7x64 SP1
    6GB free RAM (8GB installed)
    55GB Free HDD space (256GB total, it's a SSD)

  • Not enough memory to save this file

    hi ,
im doing a artwork with a size of 210" x 72" and 4 layers in total ( the size is actually half of the actual print size which is 420" by 144" ). But whenever i want to export the ai file to psd , the error prompting ' Not enough memory to save this file ' appears. I've changed my primary scratch disks frm Startup to C:\ ( which is ard 100gb ) but the error still exists. Is there anyone who could help me ? Need to send the works for print next week but i need to export this file to photoshop to do extra effects and changes.

theres around 88gb left on my drive and my ai file is juz 1.84mb.
the settings for export is as follows :
    Resolution - 72dpi ( as my workfile is being done to a scale of 50% , i used a lower dpi )
Options - Write layers with max editability
    Anti-alias unchecked
    Embed ICC profile checked

  • CS3: Not enough memory to place file?? (Vista 64 bit) SOLVED!!

For whomever this helps, I fixed my "Not enough memory to place file" problem (running Vista 64 Bit with lots of ram).
After trying everything else (checking cache files, deleting preferences file, uninstalling nearly all fonts, increasing virtual ram on machine, etc.), I solved it by right clicking the launch icon, and then in the compatibility tab checking the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box and then choosing the XP OS from the drop down list.
Oddly though, I have a nearly identical Vista 64 bit machine running the same Illustrator CS3 and this has no problems (without the need for this fix).
Add this to your list of things to try.

YES!  viveredesign is my new hero.

  • Not enough memory to open file NOKIA 6120

    Hi !
I have nokia 6120. I have also sandisk micro sd card (mobile premiere) with 1GB storage. I transfered a flash movie of 20Mb and another one of 11Mb into the card memory. I tryed to play it with flash player that is installed on the phone. When i select to play it from the file manager , it gives me a error: not enough memory to open file. On the phone i have 11 Mb of memory ow, but the movie is located on the sd card. I dont know why it gives me this error. I think its mean that i even cant play any of the other videos from the card ... for example a divx or avi movie !???
Anybody have the same problem ? I hope that there is a fix for this otherwise i have a big card that I cant use for such storage.... that will be a big shame.
    Regards

I deleted some game and gain 1MB of Ram. Yes its quite low...strange. I need to check some friend phone which have the same type. I think that more stuff installed on phone means less ram memory available, although only some of them are rally active in stand by or none of them...I asked another friend if he have the same problem. I dont know exactly what is the model of his phone, but i now he have a symbian 3rd phone s60...the first one of this s60 3rd generation. He have the same problem when talking about opening the swf videos. I think that the phone try to fill the whole movie into his ram and then play it....so it doesnt work. When opening the avi videos..using smart movie player for symbian...no problems at all. Also using the original real player works ok, but the real player that is integrated does not support avi formats. It support mp4 format and some other. The smart movie player support avi formats, divx, xvid, mp4... I chose smart movie player because it has more functionalities then nokia real player. try it.

  • With every second or third file I want to export I get the remark "Not enough memory"

After I have edited an image in Lightroom CC I always export my files to an external hard drive. Lately I get the remark "Not enough memory with every second or third file. Sometimes even with the first file I want to export.
My RAM memory is 4.00 GB and I stil have 3.25 GB available. I have cleaned my C-drive. When I look at the specifications of LR CC I see that there is a fysical memory available of 719 MB, but LR is using more than that, so it is probably using virtual memory. Could that be the problem and how do I solve the problem.
I never have any of this problem with other software.

I have LR 5.3 installed on 2 partitions on the same PC and same HD:
    Partition 1 has Win 7 32bit 4GB RAM
    Partition 2 has Win 7 64bit 8GB RAM
On the 32bit partition, now that I am using larger raw files from a Nikon D610, I find LR  not fit for purpose. I get numerous problems while editing and also get "Not enough memory" when exporting.
On the 64bit partition, everything works as should.
AS I've said before: With image files getting increasingly larger, Adobe are way too optimistic, and dare I say - disingenuous, when stating in their System Requirements: "2GB of RAM (4GB recommended)". This can only lead to dissatisfied customers.
So, as dj_paige says: "The best solution, almost guaranteed to work, is to have both a 64 bit operating system AND 8 GB or more of memory. Upgrading only one or the other probably won't work, you need both."
    Works for me!

  • Copy & Paste From Illustrator to Photoshop not matching document size

I just recently reformated my computer and I've been having an issue with copy and paste from Illustrator to Photoshop. Before I could copy a 2"x2" vector box from Illustrator into photoshop making a new document and the size and resolution would match. That is the new document would say 2"x2" at 300 ppi in photoshop and the preset would read "clipboard". I would then hit ok and paste and it would match perfectly. Now since I've reformated, photoshop always creates a new document with the wrong size regardless of the settings I enter in Illustrator or photoshop. I have document raster and effects set at 300 ppi in Illustrator and I have the new document set at 300 in photoshop, but it always transfers the 2"x2" box as some other size no matter what resolution I change it too. Again this used to work before so I'm assuming there is some setting I forgot about. Does anyone know? The main issue is the clipboard preset is not matching the document size, its almost as if Illustartor is telling photoshop it's a different resolution when it's not. Copying to 72 ppi seems to have no issue, which makes me think Illustrator just isn't sending it out at 300 ppi, but I don't know why as I have the document set at 300 ppi.

Have you found an answer that wasn't posted here yet? I have the same issue.

  • Not enough memory to save AI as PSD - CS4

Win 7 64  8GB , tried anti-aliased on and off, checking "Use Artboards - all and range 1 (only one artboard) when I zoom out there is a lot of checkered area, this file is set to dv widescreen.
I have only found the one thread on this and have tried all.
I am creating a simple line wiring diagram to be used in a DVD, I was advised to export it to Photoshop to render for better clarity on screen.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dennis

Thanks for the response Russell, I have tried that and I don't see any difference in the quality of a tiff from AI vs Acbt., there is a noticeable difference exporting from AI to Photoshop then to Premiere.

  • Illustrator 5.5 - Not enough memory (I have 12GB)

Hi, I am trying to do an assignment for class and when i try to use the 3D Effect - Revolve, I keep getting greeted with an annoying message saying that there is not enough available memory. First of all, I am working with a pretty small file size and just a simple operation. I just built myself a monster computer with Core i7 2600k processor and 12GB of RAM. Needless to say, it is a little bit frustrating when I am told there isn't enough memory..
Anyone know the issue and how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Your issue sounds similar to a problem I accidentally ran into a while back, when I revolved on object with a fill, and Illustrator froze up.
Illustrator is trying to revolve the brush pattern itself in 3D, meaning creating a highly complex 3D object with a pattern in depth, which it isn't powerful enough to do well, and this doesn't do you any good either, as you can't see inside the object.
What Revolve is intended to do is create a hollow 3D object with an outer surface, and all you want for that is a line, which then becomes the outer surface.  So make sure what you are revolving a line with no fill, brush or pattern, Illustrator will create the plain surface of the revolved object very quickly, and you can then do as you will to the surface that has been created.
(Anyway, that is what made sense to me, and solved my problem, though I certainly stand to be corrected by the more knowledgeable.)

  • Problem with file share from iTunes to iPad - not enough memory

    Hi
I've got iTunes (10.7.0.21) installed - latest version.
On my iPad I have an app - OpenSong. I need to transfer a number of files to this app throug Application - File share (don't know if this is the correct description, I use a Danish version).
I want to add around 750 small files (1-3 kb) to the iPad. The problem is that it only will copy around 30-60 files at a time before iTunes comes with a box indication that the program encountered a problem and cannot copy the file xxxxx. "Not enough availabel memory".
I then have to close iTunes and continue from where I came to. If i don't, that is I try to copy again, iTunes frequently crashes.
iPad 3, 64 GB - plenty of free memory
Win 7, 4 GB RAM, plenty of free disc space. Windows and iTunes fully updated.
Anyone got an idea? Or how do I report this to Apple?

    Hi Damse,
I have the same problem. I also have about the same number of small files to transfer to the iPad. The point at which the transfer through iTunes to the iPad varies within the range you describe. I also have taken to loading in as many files as I can, integrating them into the applicatiom, ejecting the iPad, and stopping and starting iTunes again and repeating the process.
    Best regards,
    Bob Charest

  • "not enough memory to place file" in CS3 - Huh??

Can't seem to find anything about this anywhere. User is trying to place PSD file into an AI document. When he does this, a dialog box pops up asking him which way he wants it placed (as an object or flatten document). When he chooses either option, he gets an error that there isn't enough memory to place the file.
This just started happening out of nowhere. Any ideas?? Can't be the RAM on his Mac, as he has 6GB.

Checki the Scratch disk I bet they are using the start up disk and they have good percentage of it loaded with files ad stuff. If it just started happening that is a good indication that they save one too many files to that disk.
Select a different disk with lots of room as the scratch disk and then restart AI.

  • Illustrator show not enough memory to open file,

but the file is only under 200k, my PC config is 16G Win 7, 1TB HD

no, the file is OK, I have test when the PC after restart, illustrator can open it one, but after open the same file, close then reopen the file by illustrator, it fail again, only have open the same file with illustrator, do not have open any program

  • Why this: "Could not complete the Export command because there is not enough memory (RAM)."

Same RAM (max recommended) as before so why do I get this message when I try to optimize an image for web? I've restarted the program and the computer.

How much RAM does your system have?  Have you successfully been able to optimize an image for web with your current RAM settings?  You could try going to Photoshop > Preferences > Performance and allocating more RAM to Photoshop:

  • Not enough memory to open file

I am unable to open a 1.7 mb file in photoshop 6.  I had it opened about 3 weeks ago but made no changes.  I downloaded a new copy of the file thinking my version was corrupted but no luck. I am running windows xp, 2.8 ghz celeron and just installed an additional 2gb of ram.  Naturally, photoshop is the only program i had running after a restart aside from the minimal startup windows nonsense.  Short of buying a mac or the latest version of photoshop, what can I do?
    Many thanks for any input.
On a side note, I am able to open a 4.8 mb companion file to the one in question. Both are .psd files.

Just for giggles, are you updated to Photoshop 6.0.1?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
If that does not work, consider trying to open the file in GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) or any other image editing program that supports your image filetype.
