Exposé in System Preferences
Hi Everyone.
I just bought MacPro and enjoying it very much. I was using the hot corners but now I cannot activate the corners. I am unable to find the Exposé in System Preferences. When i tried to search it, it says that this file does not exist. It used to be there in the system preferences but not anymore. I donot remember deleting it. Have I lost this applicaiton and if so how can reinstall it?
The Expose preference application is stored in the /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ folder. Its content will not appear in a Spotlight search. By default Spotlight does not search in the System folder.
In order to "lose" a preference pane you would have to delete it purposefully because access to the System folder requires special authorization. You cannot lost something there accidentally. Check the folder to see if the Expose.prefpane file is present. If it is, then you may just need to repair your hard drive and permissions to fix the problem:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
If the Expose.prefpane file is truly gone, then it can be restored as follows:
How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
• Click on the "Go" button .....
• Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
Extract or Install........
7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
11. Type in your password, click “OK”
• Pacifist will begin to extract files.
12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes.....
• Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop
Leave original alone
Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

I accidentally disabled a column of spaces where I had my System Preferences running, in "Exposé and Spaces".
Now I cannot access my System Preferences at all.
I can see System Preferences as a running application in the doc and command tabbing though running applications. I can also get to it this way and see the menu bar on the top of my screen and click through the menus and drop down menus, however I cannot see any windows.
I know that I can open different windows for if the System by selecting something in the drop down menus. Then I see the selected window if I click and hold down on the dock icon of the system preferences. However, as soon as I try to click on the window it disappears.
I know that my problem would be solved if I could turn off Spaces but how do I do this if I cannot access it though System Preferences? After a long struggle and research I found a solution.
I discovered Spaces exists in the Utilities folder in Applications.
When I opened the application from here it gave me the 3 spaces I had assigned, vertically displayed, with the system preference window sitting, outside and fairly large, hovering, partially infront of it all the other screens. After several tries of grabbing and disappearing it finally let me drag and drop the window into one of the screen.
I am really relieved now!! -
System Preferences Exposé & Spaces Quit Unexpectedly
All other preferences work as normal. (System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces) just shows "Loading Exposé and Spaces..." and nothing comes up. If I select it again I get a Problem Report for System Preferences. This menu function was accessed within the last week and was functioning as normal. As far as this problem goes, I have repaired the disk permissions, cleared the caches at "~/Library/Caches" and the preferences at "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist". This removal of the plist hasn't reset the spaces or exposé to default -- they remain as were configured earlier this week.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
May or may not be related to the issue : (although I feel that this may have nothing to do with it)
This week had to take it to the Apple Store for a trackpad height adjust. There also was a diagnostic (looked like some kind of os9 window) and they probably reset the pram. Upon booting at home I had noticed that my settings for my home network were gone, and had to reconfigure. Also a couple of 3rd party programs needed a reinstall.

shortcutMacGunt wrote:
Ya, I'd say it's likely something in your preferences folder. What you could try is quitting all your apps, moving all of the plist files to a new folder and testing it. If this fixes it then put those plists back 5 or 10 at a time until you've determined which file is casuing the problem.
This suggestion sounds in the right direction. I will probably have to do that soon but I am a bit confused about "all of the plist files." Would I do this to the entire ~/Library/Preferences?
I also used Pacifist to extract and install Expose.prefPane and I noticed something different for Expose.prefPane. The Sharing & Permission under Get Info show: username(Me) /Read & Write, staff / Read only, and everyone / Read only. The other .prefPane files show: system / Read & Write, wheel / Read only, everyone / Read only. This may or may not be at fault, but I am wondering if you or anyone else's /System/Library/PreferencePanes shows this to be standard.

Cant find expose and spaces in system preferences
I cant seem ti find "expose and spaces" in system preferences. Can anybody help please?
Welcome to the Apple Support Community!
If you upgraded from Snow Lepoard OS 10.6.x that had Exposé and Space, then those two have been integrated into Mission Control in Lion OS 10.7.x. You can learn more in the Apple KB article Mac 101: Mission Control. Mission Control is in System Preferences. Another source of info about Mission Control, Exposé and Spaces is from the Help menu in the Finder. Just type any one of those elements in the search box and you should get a few articles that are connected to each other.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
When you open , System Preferences, Personal, is there an Exposé & Spaces listed?
If so, you need to click the blue Spaces button near the top to set preferences, including enabling Spaces and, showing it in the top menu bar if desired. Once enabled, F8 is the default key to enable Spaces, as shown below. -
Changing System Preference value
Hi
Have been trying to change a keyboard shortcut in the "Expose and Spaces" pane. By default the dashboard shortcut is set to "F12" and I would like to set it to "F8". This would become an option for a user when they have logged in. They could run the script to free up the "F12" shortcut that's in use by another programme. Thought the following code would have worked:
tell application "System Events"
tell process "System Preferences"
set value of pop up button 4 of group 2 of tab group 1 of window "Exposé & Spaces" to "F8"
end tell
end tell
If anyone out there has any clues to get this working I would be grateful. Ideally a "defaults write" shell command would be the preferred route. I'm open to all suggestions.
ThanksHi,
These preferences are scriptable under Leopard via System Events, and although you don't say specifically, I'm assuming that you're running Leopard because you're using Spaces.
The problem is that the default shortcut for Spaces is already set to F8, and if you don't change it to something else first then you can't set the Dashboard shortcut to F8.
This works for me:
tell application "System Events"
tell expose preferences
set properties of show spaces shortcut to {function key:F7}
set properties of dashboard shortcut to {function key:F8}
end tell
end tell
When the script is compiled or run the third line changes to:
set properties of application bindings to {function key:F7}
But F7 continues to work as the shortcut for showing Spaces. A bug, I reckon.
Hope this helps.

Accessing System Preference pane elements by Applescript
I'm new to Applescript, and I'm trying to figure out how to set a hot corner in the Expose pane of System Preferences. I've been searching for Apple documentation, but I can't seem to find a good reference page.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?
<code>
tell application "System Events"
tell process "System Preferences"
tell menu bar 1
tell menu "View"
click menu item "Exposé & Spaces"
delay 1
tell tab group 1
click radio button "Exposé"
tell popupbutton
tell menu 1
click menu item "Spaces"
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
</code>I'll answer just three of your questions:
1. Is there a reason why we need to "end tell" "menu bar 1" after "click menu item 'Exposé & Spaces"' is done? (lines 4-11)
The reason is that the menu item "Start Screen Saver" is not part or the same hierarchy than the menu item "Exposé & Spaces". The menu item "Start Screen Saver" belongs to a menu which belongs to a pop up button which belongs to the group "Active Screen Corners" which belongs to a tab group which belongs to window "Exposé & Spaces" which belongs to the application "System Preferences".
2. What is the "window" in '*tell window "Exposé & Spaces"*'?
The window "Exposé & Spaces" is the window that replaces the "System Preferences" window when you click the menu item "Exposé & Spaces" of the "View" menu.
4. How come we need to "tell pop up button 1" before a click, instead of "click pop up button 1"?
Because we tell pop up button 1 to click AND tell menu 1 to do something. We could also have written:
tell group "Active Screen Corners"
click pop up button 1 -- or 2 or 3 or 4
tell menu 1 of pop up button 1
click menu item "Start Screen Saver" -- or any other menu item
end tell
end tell
As for your other questions, here are some references:
For GUI Scripting, have a look at this Web page:
http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/uiscripting/index.html
You should also download and use "UIElementInspector 1.3":
http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/UIElementInspector/
But before all, to get a better understanding of AppleScript, you should look at these pages:
http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/learn.html
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptual/AppleScriptLangG uide/introduction/ASLR_intro.html
(From my own point of view, AppleScript is rather difficult to learn, and GUI Scripting still more.) -

Steveyour dock preferences are likely corrupt.
delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in. your dock, spaces and exposé will be reset to the defaults.
but I wouldn't give up on spaces because of this glitch. it should now work fine. -
After enabling 'Spaces', System Preferences window instantly became inaccessible. System Preferences and its full menu title bar will display but the actual window isn't there for me to make changes.
How do I make the window to appear or even to disable 'Spaces' again? I don't even want the 'Spaces' again!your dock preferences are likely corrupt.

I am trying to activate the root account on my new Mac Book Pro. The instructions that I have found do not match what I have in System Preferences. What is the process when using Users and Groups. When I click on Join the Network Account Server- Open Directory Utility I don't see a option to activate root user as the instructions say at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528
OS X Lion
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click the lock and authenticate as an administrator account.
Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right.
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK.Do you mean you cannot select "Enable Root User" from the "Edit" menu as shown below?
Why do you think you need to enable the root user? I've never needed it in the history of OS X. -

Is it an option to go back to an earlier time/state of the computer, obviously, after securing any files that may disappear (if you have them on your main harddisk)? -
System Preferences no longer stick after 10.10.1 update
I've upgraded from OS X 10.10 to 10.10.1 today.
The upgrade caused various system preferences to change, and now I cannot change them back.
While System Preferences.app seems to accept my changes, they are reverted after I quit and restart System Preferences.
For example:
Language & Region:
- I used to have various languages in the list of my preferred languages. Since the update, only German remains in the list. Adding other languages does not stick.
- My Region is set to Germany - English, which causes german text but english number formats to be used. Changing the number format to german does not stick.
General:
- When I click the scroll bar, this now causes the document to move by one page. I used to have the other setting (move to that location), but cannot reenable that.
- Windows are now closed upon quitting applications. I don't want this, but removing the check box does not stick.
Does anybody have an idea what the root cause may be and how to fix this?
With kind regards
Piers WalterBack up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. Can not receive Mac mail -error Outlook cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct. Account name: "MacMail"
What are the correct mail account settings and more importantly the correct DNS settings
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide
Cheers
Chris (iMac i7)Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
• Server name: imap.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 993
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
• Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 587
• SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria: 8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers. If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message. Go to http://appleid.apple.com then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

Blank white System Preferences window
Hello all,
I purchased a secondhand G5 for the purpose of having a second internet station at home (I do most of my work on a late 2008 MBP but we've got multiple people here who like to use the Internet at the same time). When I set up this computer, it was hooked up to an old flat screen monitor (bought when they first came out) the HD was wiped clean, Leopard was installed, the internet was set up and working and everything seemed good to go. However, I wanted to get into the system to change the monitor resolution setting since the type/icons were a little big for my taste.
When I pulled up System Preferences, I got a completely blank white window. This happens every time System Prefs is launched. I can click on this window where normally icons would be, and things seem to happen (the window changes size) but it remains completely white. Moreover, all of the pulldown menus from the top menu bar also are blank white. I can move my mouse down in the File menu where Quit would normally be, and I can click on it and System Preferences quits. If I quit out of System Prefs, the Finder and other software windows act normally. When I log into System Prefs again, same blank white window, same problem.
This blank white window thing also happens with Preview, but I have not noticed it with any other programs on the system (yet).
Here's what I've done to troubleshoot:
Discarded appropriate systempreferences.plist file in the User>Library>Preferences window, also appropriate file in User>Library>Caches. Emptied trash and rebooted. Same problem.
Reinstalled Leopard, 10.5. Tested, same problem. Upgraded with combo pack to 10.5.8, tested, same problem.
Swapped out video card for a known working video card, tested, same problem.
Swapped monitor for known working new monitor, tested, same problem.
Am I missing some other .plist or similar file that should be discarded? Has anyone experienced anything like this and been able to solve it? Would this be due to software issues, or some kind of hardware issue? Because I can't see System Preferences, I can't create a new user account and discard the old one to try and resolve any software issues, my only choice is to do a clean install (which I have done to no avail).
Help? I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance.
RajiWell, at least we are seeing some light here. I forgot about Safe Mode! When I started up into that, I can see the System Preferences windows just fine... it's no longer white, and I can select what I need and make changes.
However, I have done permissions repair from every possible angle (both from HD and DVD), I have reset the PRAM, and I still get a blank Sys Prefs window on normal startup.
The only thing suggested here I have not tried is replacing the PRAM battery (since at the moment, I don't have one). That will be the next angle of attack but I'll have to wait to get one in.
Other than the battery, could this be some kind of peripheral or software conflict?
This is bugging me! I mean really.... it's just an Internet station, but one does want things to work properly nonetheless!
Thanks for the help so far.... ! It has been useful. -
System Preferences opens to a blank, white window
I erased my drive when I set up a Dual 2.7GHz G5 tower for sale, and installed Leopard. Updated to 10.5.4. Then found that when I open System Preferences, I get a blank white window. I can go to the dock item and click to select a particular tab, but it only changes the window size. It is still all white.
The menu bar items also display only white. Any ideas??? I'm stumped. Also sold the G5, so must get it fixed ASAP.I don't know if this will help: it used to work well in 10.3 and earlier, and quite often in 10.4.
Strange behaviour by System Preferences can often be fixed by trashing com.apple.preferencepanes.cache in Home > Library > Caches folder. Trash com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache as well if you have it.
If this alone doesn't fix things after a logout/login, then trash them again (because it will have regenerated more bad files), together with com.apple.systempreferences.plist in Home > Library > Preferences folder, and in the Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, the files com.apple.systempreferences.xxxxxx.plist, where xxxxxx = a hexadecimal numeric string.
You need to log out and log back in again for this to have any effect (or restart if you prefer).
If none of this helps, you will need to look in your log files to find out why your preference panes are not opening: the simplest way to do this is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "Console Messages" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom tool to Clear both windows.
Now try to open System Preferences and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here.
You may see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". If so, click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar (preferably in another window). Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.
