Express, Airport Utility and sleepless nights

Hi, Don't know if anyone can help my recent sleep patters   I am running Windows Vista on my PC albeit everything else in the house is Apple.  Including MacBook Pro, ipads and iphones... amongst others
I have a Thompson TG582n modem router which is connected via Ethernet to the WAN port of my recently purchased Extreme A1408.  I have configured using Airport Utility 5.5.3 for Windows and eventually created a wireless network... 'Appleb58c63'.... I have checked the 'extend this network' and all good so far. The signal is good, but only as good as the Thompson modem router.  So to 'extend' the signal I have purchased an Express A1264.  I have followed every thread on this forum in attempt for the AU to recoginse the AX... I have even balanced on my head with one arm out of the window
Bottom line is it will not recognise the AX 'wirelessly'... If I connect via Ethernet then I do get recognition & I have tried to configure it via Ethernet and then go wireless but alas....... I am usually a stoic person but I have to say I am beaten on this....
Any help on the AX would be most appreciated... the sleep I will sort out.
Thanks

The plot thickens.... are you ready for this one!  I checked for wifi on my BB and sure enough the Express showed up.... still doesn't appear in A Utility on the PC though.  Then I checked on my Mac Book and...... well it self configured, recognised the Base Station Extreme and then also found the Express and configured itself!!! However, I go back to Utility on the PC and still it doesn't recognise the Express??
On my Mac Book it is showing Modem, Extreme & Express are all now connected to the 'Apple Network b58b63'.  I have placed Extreme at the far end of the house and the Mac Book still recognises it but when stood in front of it with the Blackberry the signal for the wifi Network drops low.... yet the Mac Book & Ipads are all good signal... Ah well...
My intention when buying the Express was to 'extend' the signal, as when in various parts of the house the signal is weak and FaceTime etc. sometimes drop out.
I'm not sure if I've done that... have I?

I would recommend setting the wireless encryption on the AirPort Express BEFORE configuring it for the AirPort Extreme in this case. This issue also comes up often when configuring AirPorts into a WDS.
If setting up security in my recommend order does not work, temporarily connect the Express by Ethernet to the Extreme; make the security changes, and then, move the Express back to the desired location.

  • My Windows XP AirPort util and Bonjour can't find any wireless device

I have both macbook and a PC laptop.
I just started using my TimeCapsula and all features (Internet gateway, access to the USB printer and the external harddisk) are visible and working fine when using my macbook.
My PC wireless card seems to be working fine too and I can access the Internet using the Airport gateway.
My problem is that Airport Util and Bonjour on my PC "can't find any wireless devices" (even though It is clearly working fine) and therefore don't detect/mount the external drive or the Printer.
    Thanks!

How do your Extreme and Express connect to one another? Wired Ethernet between the two, or wirelessly?
Try unplugging the Express. Does that change anything?
Wireless interference could cause the symptoms you're describing. Even though you did nothing to your wireless network, the presence of other wireless networks or introduction of nearby devices will bring interference where there was none before.
AirPort and Bluetooth: Potential sources of interference for wireless devices and networks
Try changing wireless channels; use "automatic" unless you have reason to use a specified channel. Try checking "interference robustness". Altering these settings may help, but they could make things worse.
If you are unable to configure a device over Airport, or changing a setting leaves you unable to configure it wirelessly, connect its Ethernet port to your computer's Ethernet port and Airport Utility should find it.
As a last resort, try a "hard reset" followed by re-configuring the Extreme, Express, or both. Start by removing your Express from the network. Re-configure the Extreme and see if that fixes things. If it does, add the Express to your network and re-configure it as well.

I open airport utility ... can not locate any of my wireless devises, airport extreme base,, airport express, apple tv, wifi printer.
AirPort Utility will only detect Apple AirPort base stations (Extreme, Express, Time Capsule) for purposes of configuring them. It is not designed to detect or configure other wireless devices like your printer.

I tried using the wireless connection, and also the cable, but none worked. Any idea of what could be happening?

What are you setting it up as.. join wireless network .. the very worst setup, it will disappear.. reboot the whole network in order modem. router TC.. clients and it will likely reappear.
Tell us what network setup you are using..
If you setup with cable to a computer completely isolated from the network with TC also isolated.. finish the setup of everything you want. .before update.. then plug it into the network. .then restart everything in correct order.. it will work most of the time.

What is Airport Utility and why do I need to access Airport witeless devices in order to backup my iMac using Time Machine...HELP!!! PLEASE??

AirPort Utility is required to configure an Apple AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
Time Machine can use a Time Capsule or a locally connected volume. You only need to use AirPort Utility if you are using a Time Capsule.

  • Printer problem with Airport Utility and Epson CX5500

    Hi,
I recently bought an iMac '24 2.66 Computer and was able to set up my internet through an airport. When it came to hooking up a wireless Epson CX5500 printer, the airport recognized it, but when it came to print in the printing queue it simply wont print. I was able to find a very helpful post that would possibly be my next step in fixing it (probably just a program error or hook up)
    Here is that post:

    +Hi there,+
+I had the same problem, but with an Epson CX5500.+
+Firstly, BTW - I found out there IS a list of supported printers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1370?viewlocale=en_US. Before you scream - "that's leopard you idiot"; in the table, if the printer is listed with a MODERN driver, then it will work with Airport Base Station - eg TimeCapsule.+
+Next. My problem was solved by deleting the spaces put into the printer name by timecapsule. When the printer is recognised it was called "Epson CX 5500". My Macbook printer service then set up a Queue which was mdns://...Epson%20CX%205500... Note - substitution of %20 for space in the name. I removed the spaces from the name via airport utility, manual set up, printers. Now the macbook could print to it.+
    Cheers,
    Mark
The problem that i have is the step by step process of altering this or finding it. As i made the name of the shared printer EPSONStylusCX5500 but could not acess the printer name one to change it. The url link still shows the 20%. If someone could please take the time to explain on how to do it, then maybe just maybe, i would be able to print wirelessly. Any other ideas or even cheap printers that would work without a problem as i would simply go out and buy one instead. Thanks.

  • Airport Utility and new AirPort Express - Window XP

I have a desktop PC that is hardwired into my wireless router and a laptop PC that is connected wirelessly, both are running Windows XP. My AirPort Utility on my Desktop will not recognise my new AirPort Express, but my wireless laptop will. Here's the fun part....when I click on the "Continue" button to complete the initial setup the Utility goes through the "Connecting To Network" procedure but does NOT continue past. Same thing happens if I click "Manual Setup"I have reset the AirPort Express and still have no luck. Not sure what to do now...can anyone help?

There are many in the same situation.  See this thread

And there is a fix but Apple keep deleting messages that mention it.

  • I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is flashing and so it is not being recognized.  I have been on the computer and gone to airport utility and it is simply not showing up at all.  What can I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • HT6114 AirPort Utility and AirPlay no longer works after 10.9.2 upgrade.

After upgrading to v10.9.2 last night, iTunes no longer shows my AirPlay speakers (attached to an AirPort Express) as available (other devices on same network see them fine still).
After upgrading to v10.9.2 the AirPort Utility can no longer see/connect to manage the Airport Extreme Time Capsule or the AirPort Express (the Wifi works, I'm associated to the SSID and sufring the web just fine, but I can no longer manage the devices - they don't even show up (marked as 'missing' with the option to 'forget' them in the GUI).

    This worked for me.
Joseph Rose's solution (in another discussion) finally fixed Airplay for me.  I now have mirroring and extended Airplay functions again.  It was a long road, but in the end, removing Air Parrot and Air Display was the solution for me.
    Solution:
Ran the Air Display uninstaller that I found by searching in spotlight.
Ran the Air Parrot removal tool & confirmed that the files were deleted based on instructions from their website.
Thanks to all that participated and spent their valuable time offering assistance!

  • After configuring my airport express, airport utility can no longer see it.

Configuring airport express seems to make it invisible to itunes and the airport utility that configured it. This seems to have started happening since Yosemite.

Sorry, can you explain what you mean by the AirPort Express is invisible to iTunes.
In any case, it sounds like something glitches when setting up the APE. Reset it using these instructions, then configure it again to see if that helps:

  • AirPort Express & AirPort Utility

Hi Everyone, I have an interesting problem (at leats I think it's interesting ).
I added an AirPort Express to my existing wireless network (which took some manual configuration with a LAN cable) and I have everything working, almost. I can play song on my stereo using AirTunes, and I can see the AirPort Express when I use the Configure Other option in the AirPort Utility, but for some reason the AirPort Utility is unable to detect the AirPort Express.
    I am using Vista 64, with a D-Link DIR-655.
I'm pretty sure I'm just missing somethig really obvious, but if you could enlighten me, it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

Apple does not currently provide a way to download the latest Windows version of the Airport Utility if you haven't already installed Airport Utility 5.0 from the CD that ships with the Airport Extreme N Base Station.
However, you can obtain it using this slightly convoluted process:
    1. download "AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Windows" from Apple's web site. You cannot run that update straight away, because it will terminate with an error message indicating that a copy of Airport Utility 5.0 isn't already installed on your PC, so the update cannot proceed.
    2. use a Winzip utility to extract the contents of the file you downloaded (called Airport521update.exe) to another folder.
    3. the contents of that folder should include four files - applesoftwareupdate.msi, apsetup.msi, apsetupadmin.exe, and bonjour.msi
    4. go to All Programs -> Accessories. Right click on the "Command Prompt", select to "run as administrator", and click continue when Windows asks for your permission to run this command.
    5. in the command prompt window, type and execute the command
    msiexec /i pathto_folder_of_files_youdownloaded\apsetup.msi /qb ap50isinstalled=1
That's it! This method simply forces the installer into thinking Airport 5.0 is already installed, thus letting the installer complete its job of installing a full working copy of the updated version. The process also installs Bonjour for Windows, which will simplify the task of configuring on the PC any printer connected to the Base Station.

  • Older Airport Express, Airport Utility

I have an older (about 2005-2006 vintage) Airport Express that is used as a satellite base station (network extender?). This old Express works flawlessly to extend a household / home office network and to allow for a workgroup printer to be connected in the office.
The "mothership" is currently an aging (2004 vintage) round white Airport Extreme, which has been having problems. We just bought a refurbished late-model Airport Express from Apple direct to replace the old Extreme as the "mothership". (The current "mothership" is connected via Ethernet cable to a DSL modem, so it is our network hub and our gateway to the internet.)
I'm thinking seriously about reconstituting the LAN situation; shut everything down, disconnect the old Extreme, and plug-in the new Express and build a new LAN with new network ID, password, etc. to save time and headache. No decision has been made yet. Nothing has been done.  Problem: the "old" Airport Express is vital to what we do. We need to incorporate the "old" Express into the "new" network.
I tried launching the Airport Admin Utility on one of our newer (2012/2013) computers today, and the Utility cannot access either the "old" Extreme or the "old" Express. The Utility says these devices are not supported by this version of the Utility software. If I do go ahead and rebuild the LAN with a new "mothership" ("new" Express), network ID and password, how do I program the "old" Express to join the "new" LAN?

    Regarding your idea.....
You do not mention whether you want the Expresses to connect to the D-Link modem/router using wireless, but I assume that you do.
The new and old AirPort Express devices might be able to be configured to wirelessly "join" the wireless network provided by the D-Link modem router, so the printers could connect to the Expresses as they do now.
The only way to know whether this will really work or not would to try it by resetting both Expresses back to default settings and setting them up again.
I think you may be forgetting that you will still have a problem trying to configure the older Express though, since you will need a different version of AirPort Utility to do so for that device. Do you have a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to configure the older Express?
Neither Express will be able to "extend" the wireless signal provided by the D-Link modem/router, since Apple's "extend" feature is proprietary.........it only works among Apple devices. So, the Expresses will not provide any extended wireless signal coverage for the D-Link modem/router network.
IF....you want to use the new Express as it is already set up now.....AND....you want a second Express to wirelessly extend the signal from the first Express......AND....you want to be able to configure and administer each AirPort Express using the 10.9.5 operating system that you have......there is a solution:
Replace the old AirPort Express with another new AirPort Express.

  • Airport Utility and Firewall Difficulties

I am running Windows 7 with a Time Capsule and Airport Express for NAS, wireless routing, and Airplay.  The TC is connected to the Win 7 desktop via ethernet and we have a Vista laptop and iPhones which connect wirelessly to the network.
I also have a Webroot internet security program for antivirus and firewall which seems to be interfering with Airport Utility finding the TC and AE.  If I disable the firewall and reboot, the devices appear in APutil.  Windows Firewall is disabled and not used.
I have included the APutil.exe, APagent.exe, iTunes.exe, and a few other Apple executables in the security exceptions to allow their traffic but APutil still can't see the devices.  The wireless internet connection still works but Airplay will not.  Is there another Webroot setting I need to change?
Alternatively, would I still be protected if I shut off the Webroot firewall function and allowed the NAT Firewall in the Apple hardware to operate?  Is there anything I need to do in the Airport Utility to make this happen?
Many thanks in advance from a wireless newbie.

iTunes uses UDP port 5353 to locate AirPort Express base stations that can be destinations for your AirTunes music stream. Make sure this port is allowed through your firewall.

  • Airport Utility and MAC addresses - Leopard

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger, and cannot stress how much I hate this new Airport Utility. It's like Apple tried to simplify the process so much so that it is bordering on extremely annoying. My biggest problem is the removal of the ability to import/export MAC address access lists (.txt file). Lately, I've had to hard reset my AirPort Extreme and Express (as WDS) base stations a few times due to problems, and let me tell you, re-inputting 14 MAC addresses one by one into each base station can be pretty annoying due to the time it takes...especially when all I had to do before was import it from my documents folder.
Why was this feature removed...? I just don't get it. It's such a simple thing and makes life so much easier. I was wondering if anyone knows a way around this? Is it possible to use or install the Aiport Admin Utility from Tiger onto Leopard so that can get this feature back?
    Many thanks.

You can download Airport Admin Utility 4.2.5 from Versiontracker: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15748
It's supposed to run under Leopard. My version (4.1.1) runs just fine for me but I stopped using it after Airport Utility came out. I didn't notice they removed the MAC import / export feature until reading your post.
