Extending the rating stars

I was wondering if we are allowed to extend the rating stars which is currently at 5 stars to 10 stars for example. I would like to, but I don't know how.

If you reaaly really really must use 10 stars then you could use a web app... Theoretically, there is no reason why it wouldn't work. Caution!- It will require quite a bit of time but to start you off, here are the ingredients...

Displaying the Rating Stars under images

For some odd reason, I can no longer get the rating stars to show under images for sorting and determining levels of importance. Can anyone assist? I presently have Elements 8 and the display under images is the date.

Push the thumbnail slider slightly to the right until yiu see mor information displayed.

The rating stars are stuck on my screen.

I have the 30 GB model. When I press the middle button to go to the "my rating" screen, if I change the rating, even if I change it back, it stays there. Then the stars go off to be replaced by themselves, but it gets louder as it would if you rub the wheel like on the regular bar. The only way to get the starts off is to reset or connect the ipod.

How to view rating stars on pictures in browser or split view

On an Imac aperture v3.2 I cannot see the rating stars on the pictures in browser or split view. I can only see them if i open the metadata for each individual picture. Does anyone know how to turn this feature on? My husband has a Macbook pro using the same software and he can see them.

The ratings are part of the Metadata Overlays (link goes to User Manual page with full instructions). There are seven different Metadata Overlays. It is helpful to customize each of them. The customization is done via "View→Metadata Display→Customize".
The Browser Metadata Overlay is toggle on/off with "u". "{Shift}+u" will toggle the Browser Metadata Overlay between "Basic View" and "Expanded View".
What is most likely is simply that either your Browser Metadata display has been toggled off. Try each of the toggles above, and see if that doesn't bring back the ratings. If it doesn't, you'll have to add them back to the Metadata View using the customize command above.

Rating Stars Gone

The rating stars no longer show up when in browser mode. I can see them in full screen mode. I assume I accidentally changed a setting. How do I get the rating stars back?

ITunes bug? Rating stars won't click-drag left-right anymore

The latest iTunes patch (v10.1.0.54 running on Windows 7) seems to have an annoying bug: When I'm rating a song, it immediately takes my initial click, regardless of whether I hold down the mouse button -- whereas I used to be able to click in the area where the rating stars are, hold down the mouse button, and then drag out the stars to the rating I wanted, e.g. 4 stars. Now, however, iTunes ignores the fact that I'm holding down the mouse button and sets the rating at whatever position I initially click, e.g. 1 star.
The reason this is a super-annoying problem is that I only ever listen to smart playlists that filter out songs with low star ratings. So now as soon as I click a song to rate it, if I happen to initially click less than a 3-star rating, it immediately disappears. After I'm finished cursing at the computer, I have to go find the song under my general Music Library and re-rate it so it will show back up in my "smart" playlists. Grr.
Incidentally, I was able to drag the stars as normal one time -- but other than that one instance, it has not worked at all since the most recent patch. Please, Apple, please please please fix this bug. It's causing me a serious headache.

UPDATE: This bug only affects iTunes configured to allow half-star ratings.
I normally have my ItunesPrefs.xml file configured to use half-stars, with this line:

After testing removal of the line, the click-drag on whole stars works normally. So it appears this bug exists only for those who only use half stars.
Is there any hope of Apple fixing the click-drag problem when half-stars are enabled?

Thee are two ways that I know of.
- Restore the new iPod from the backup of the old one. See:

App data is not included with the apps in your iTunes library. Thus, just syncing the apps from your iTunes library will not get the app data like saved games.

My work flow is to look at the card with Nikon ViewNX2, and assign rating stars to the keepers, then import the keepers
into Lightroom. I can't see the stars in the import dialog, though I can see them once I do the import. LR clearly
understands the rating stars because it can import them. I'd like to be able to see the rating stars in the import dialog and
filter on them at import time. I suspect that there are others out there that would like to filter on color labels and the flags.
Why not use Lightroom for the review? I sometimes don't have the Lightroom computer with me, or any computer at all.
Nikon ViewNX2 is free, and I can install it on whatever computer is handy. It's also fast, and understands dual monitors.
Simliar logic applies to BreezeBrowser and even the free Microsoft software.

Please assist I have 3 questions:
1. How to add the hit count on a website so that I can able to see how many people visited my site.
2. How to add the rating stars for music/video so that people can able to rate/vote for the best song/video of the month.

I'm in complete agreement with JoeyD. Hit counters add nothing special to a typical site. Since they don't tell you where your hits are coming from or whether or not these are unique hits, I see no point in them.
@ Shocker. Your argument doesn't hold water. A regular web site is NOT the same as a web forum or blog where user participation is part of the whole experience. It's like comparing oranges to ducks - totally different.
If you look closely at Adobe's main web site or any other commercial site like Apple or Dell you're not likely to see hit counters on them. Why? Because they're irrelevant. The only people who care about site traffic are site owners and developers.

Setting rating stars in LR4

I just upgraded to LR4, and have found that I can't set ratings simply by typing a number while a photo is selected. If I hold the shift key while typing a number, the rating is set, but the same image stays selected. This is with an "upgraded" catalog that was created in LR3. About 76K images.
I'm running a Mac OS 10.6.8 on a MacPro 8-core with 16 GB of RAM.
I'd like to have the rating stars run the way they did on LR3. Any suggestions?

In the event that iPhoto uses a font for those stars and clearing out the iPhoto cache folder doesn't help, try using OnyX to clear out the font caches (the screenshot show just the application caches selected). That may help.
EDIT: it might the the Apple Symbols font so with Font Book see if it's activated. If not activate it and if it is, deactivate and then reactivate it.

My Rating Star Error

I am on a PC/XP and the rating stars do not show up when i try and create a Smart Playlist of ratings from say "*" to "***". It just shows a black bar instead of stars. This has persisted in the last 2 versions of iTunes. Very annoying. The stars do not show up in the rating area if i do a "get info" as well but they do show up in the track list. I can not edit this "black bar" area but i can edit the stars in the track list. It is merely a black bar where the stars should be. i can not make the bar smaller to represent a smaller rating. I can not create an accurate smart playlist. check it:

Reinstall QT with the standalone installer.

Most likely you have set the wrong file as the external editor. You don't want the obvious one; that's just a link to the welcome screen. Go back and choose this one, which is hidden away inside the folder Support Files:

Hi,
One of my ex-colleagues has installed a NI-DAQ 6.5 in our system. [And I do not see any other naitional instruments card in the CPU of the computer, may be he removed it] I deleted the account and all his files in the system. When I am trying to install version8.0, its not getting installed and giving me a message that I should uninstall the previous version by going to Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
I tried doing that, but the "Change/Remove" button does not seem to work...[There is no response and so unable to install the new version...]
Any idea how can this problem be solved?
It is a windowsXP operating system with SP2 installed on a machine with P4 processor.

How effective is the five star rating system?

I'm all for rating buyers and sellers on eBay so that one can distinguish the good buyers and sellers from those that are perhaps a little less professional. However, I've had sellers ask me to leave a 5 star rating across the board, as they claim anything less is considered a negative rating. Most sellers write thank you on the items they send but in many cases that's the only communication that you've had with them. What does that warrant on the rating system to provide honest feedback? When the description on an item doesn't really tell you anything other than say "old stamp". How do you rate that? It is an old stamp; so looked at one way the description is very accurate but it's not really telling you anything about the item.. I may be a bit naive here but I've never seen a list of the criteria used to determine "very accurate", "very fast", "very satisfied" or "very quickly". For the rating system to accurately reflect how good or poor the buyers and sellers are it needs to be objective. That is to say that buyers and sellers must have a generally agreed upon statement of what constitutes the categories from 1 to 5. After all one person's "very fast" (it shipped within a week) could be another person's "very slow". Subjective ratings are open to interpretation and all one sees is the feedback comment and the ratings not how the person determined the ratings. I think this is a discussion that would help to improve the feedback system and make it a more accurate reflection of how both buyers and sellers do business in this arena.
