  • External DvD-rom for Portege 3500

I recently acquired a Portege 3500 as well as a Toshiba external DVD-ROM (model No. PA3246U-1DVD). As I attempt to find drivers for this I have failed horribly (for the dvd-rom). It is connected via a Card Bus card. Toshiba says the drivers should be part of Windows but my system cannot find them. I was wondering if anyone here had drivers for the Portege 3500 for this. If I'm not mistaken they should be for PCMCIA adapters. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
*Side note: Retailers say the Toshiba external DVD-ROMs ships with cd contain both manual and drivers. If anyone has a copy or could point me to a site with them it would be greatly appreciated as well.

mostly the external DVD-drives are made by freecom
you can find the freecom cardbus driver for your 3500 here :

if you need additional drivers you can find and download them at the freecom website ( www.freecom.com )

  • Need to get an external DVD player for Imac, which one?

    Hey (again),
I've had a terrible time getting my imac up and running properly since I got it back from its HD replacement yesterday.
It's gotten to the point where I'm going to wipe the system and then do a time machine reinstall.
My problem is that my imacs dvd player doesn't play DVD's anymore, it just spits out the install DVD. Could I use any cheap external DVD (usb) drive and wipe and install my OS from there or does it need to be in the internal one? I found a couple of really cheap ones that I'm wondering would do the trick or does it need to be a specific brand?
Or do I need to have my imac which is out of warranty serviced and have the original dvd player replaced?
Any input on this is greatly appreciated.

In my experience just about any external DVD drive works. I've found them way cheaper at a big technology store like "Fry's".

Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

  • Have a canon dc310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's. How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?Camcorder unable to connect to computer. Will a mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device? Which device works well with a mac?

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer.  How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?  Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device?  Which device works well with the Mac?  Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac?  Thanks!!

No DV port in camcorder.  Just a yellow AV port/hole.  I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's.  Can I use this with a Mac?  Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac?  Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way?  Thanks again!

  • Installing Tiger w/ External DVD ROM

I have an e-mac with a dud super drive, bought an external DVD Rom Drive, pop the disk in, It mounts, double click install, it says restart to start the instalation, i do, then it boots up like nothings different, no installation, I tried to restart holding down "c" and a weird screen comes up with some "apple basic" stuff and i have to restart I also changed to start up disk option and it didnt work. I'm runing 10.2.8, bought a new mac book with tiger and leopard software, I want to upgrade my good ol e-mac but cant! Please help!
    Brad

    Bradley Beef,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is the external DVD Firewire or USB? Only Firewire devices can serve as external boot drives for PowerPC (PPC) macs such as the eMac.
Holding the c key down at startup tells the Mac to try to boot from the internal optical drive. You want the option key, as described in Startup Manager: Select a Startup Volume. (You can also look at Magical Macintosh Key Sequences).
From your post, it does come across that you're using the Install discs from the Mac Book. Aside from the pesky legal detail that the Mac Book software is licensed only for use with the Mac Book, gray label OS X Install discs are model-specific and will only work with the model with which the discs were shipped (not to mention the Mac Book is an Intel CPU and the eMac a PPC CPU). You'll need the retail black-label Tiger or Leopard Install DVD to update the eMac.
Updating from 10.2.8 to 10.4.x will make your eMac feel much more responsive (assuming you have at least 512 MB RAM). There's a handy upgrade guide for Tiger in Gulliver - Tiger Upgrade Guide.

  • HP Envy 15 Won't boot from external dvd rom

    Hi All,
My HP Envy is brand new (Envy 15 j151sa). The external DVD drive is brand new (HP dvd600). My model of the Envy does not have an internal CD/DVD drive
I want to boot from a live DVD.
I've read other posts and answers for similar queries and followed the suggestion.
On boot press F10 (BIOS setup) and the Boot Options settings are as follows...
    a) Secure boot  - disabled
    b) Legacy boot - enabled.
    c) Changed the legacy boot order to have the USB dvd rom as first in the list.
    Save the setting.
    Restart the PC.
    On boot press F9
Displays the availabe list of devices (3)  to boot from as
    OS Boot Manager
    Boot from EFI file
    Notebook harddrive
There is no option to select the external DVD rom drive.
I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest HP recommended version.
I don't know what else to try.
I could really use some help now.
    Thanks

Your external DVD drive is operatying as it should.
The best place to find an answer on how to make the live CD is at the Debian forum. The disk you made apparentlydoes not have an MBR bootsector or a recognized EFI partition. Either of those is what is needed for the disk to be bootable and your notebook  BIOS must be configured accordance with the choice of format type.
Personally I have always preferred using a utility like UNetbootln  to make multiple "live" bootable Linux versions.
I don't bother with the hassle of DVD or CD media any more.
If you have a spare 32 or 64GB usb flashdrive, then you can put an incredible number of versions of Linux and troubleshooting utilities on it.
The economy of scale with usb flashdrive has gotten to the point where a 16 GB usb flashdrive is less expensive that DVD recordable media. Check out the prices at NewEgg.
Get your preferred version of Debian AMD64 live iso from here.

  • External dvd rom

I have connected an external dvd-rom with my iMac "21 Display" to play a dvd and there was a dialogue displayed "A valid DVD driver could not be found (70012)", my IOS is 10.6.8. May I know how can I use the external disc to play the DVD as the internal DVD-ROM of my iMac has already been out of order.

  • Do you need a special external hard drive for iMac?

Do you need a special external hard drive for iMac?

Any external hard drive that will connect via Firewire 800, USB, or Thunderbolt will work.
I have a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio drive in an OWC case, sitting on a Backpack, which connects via Firewire.  Western Digital Scorpio drives have 5 year warranties, the OWC (macsales.com) cases usually use the Oxford chipset which works well with macs, and the Backpack is a slick way to mount a backup drive without taking up desk space.
After you hook up whatever external drive you end up with, you'll partition and initialize it for OS X, then begin using it.
My opinion, I would not get a Western Digital pre-packaged external drive/case.  While the hard drives are OK, there have been a number of people that have had issues with the electronics.

  • External DVD burner for G4

    Hi,
I was wondering if there are any external dvd burners for a G4 with a USB port that is under 2.0. Also, it's a 400 firewire. Thanks in advance.

    Hi
If you're Mac profile is accurate, you will have problems with any new drive: OS9.1 will not natively support any new drive, and will not allow you to burn DVD's at all without third party software, such as Toast 5.2.3 (last version that can burn to DVD-/+R (no DL media), and run in OS9)
All USB2.0 drives are backwards compatable w/USB1.01, BUT USB1.01 will not support DVD burns, as it cannot run faster than 4X CD-R (way too slow to burn a DVD (1X DVD = 9X CD)).
You will want to go with a FireWire-based drive, if you go external, as WWJD pointed out.

  • Installing from external dvd rom

    Hi,
Is it possible to install solaris 10 from external dvd rom. If yes then how?
    Thanks,
    Javed

I just did this on a Sun E420, attaching a SCSI DVD-ROM to the external SCSI connector, so that it's on a different SCSI bus.
Did a probe-scsi-all to see the device.
Did a devalias cdrom to see what that path looks like
Did a devalias dvdrom <path to DVD like the cdrom>
    boot dvdrom (worked)
to make the device alias permanent (devalias setting is lost after reset or power down) use nvalias command (like the devalias) and make sure the use-nvramrc? OBP env variable is true. (see online OBP docs).
If you have a x86/x64 system, this won't help.

You will find internal optical drivers from OWC here. You will find external DVD burners from OWC here.
For the external drives, almost any Firewire burner will be supported by your PowerBook. Here are a few. You can further refine the filters.
    Good luck.
