External devices (HD's, digital cameras) do not appear as icons on desktop

This is, I think, exactly the same question asked by Byron B.
That is: external devices (Hard Drives, digital cameras) do not appear as icons on desktop. They used to, but not anymore. I can access them through the finder windows, but no icons on the desktop.
What causes this? More importantly, how do I rectify this?
All help and wisdom much appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Hi. I just discovered my videos from my Canon digital camera are not compatible with imovie or idvd (I'm very disappointed about that.) The photos are stored in my iphoto and I can burn a dvd using idvd but there is no audio So.... I need new software. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and my digital still camera is the Canon Cybershot These are home movies of my kids and the viedeos are precious. Thanks in advance!

I can't trace a camera of that name. All that comes up is either the Sony Cybershot or the Canon Powershot!
Please confirm excactly what camera you have, and what version of iMovie.

I'm using windows 7, trying to download pictures from my canon 5d mark 2, but when I click import, the camera does not appear. I've tried changing USB ports, switching the camera on and off, trying a different USB cord, tried a different camera, but nothing. Please help! This problem only started a few days ago on lightroom 3.6, upgraded to 5.5, but still not working. Thanks.

Can you see the Canon EOS camera and image files using Windows Explorer? If not disconnect the camera, close all applications' shutdown Windows, and TURN OFF the power to your system and ALL connected devices. Disconnect all phones, iPads, and any other USB devices and restart your system.
Retry Windows Explorer and see if your camera is showing. If so try LR import again.

  • As of yesterday, my external devices diappeared from thesideboard of my just over 3-month-old desktop iMAC

I first noticed the probkem when  my camera did not appear. Today it was my thumb drive. I have already tried  inserting the cables into different USB slots, but it did not  resolve the problem. I also tried attaching the thumb drive to my old iMac (which currently is in the throes of death and forced me to buy the new iMac.)  The old  Mac still has Tiger  as its OS. so the desktop display looks different than Moutain Lion's (e.g., no sideboard menu). Also, however, the graphic card (on my old Mac) is almost dead, making it difficult to  see colors of images accurately or read text on the screen.
But what I could see, was that although the devices do not show up on the  sideboard,  the icon is visible on both desktops, and on  my new Mac, if clicked,  it opens with what looks like a mini-sized collection of folders, which open to  thumbnail shots of various  images inside each of them.
I have forgotten how I got there yesterday, but it may have been by running a search for my thumb drive, which revealed the information for the  drive under the sideboard seach information —  as well as a folder at the bottom of thst  "screen." Clicking on that enabled me to open the files I needed . . . but only in preview mode.
I've probably  overlooked  infirormation you neen to help me straighten things out and will be glad to answer them, but unfortunately I have to leave for a funeral in the next county in a few minutes; but will respond as soon as I get back.
Also just noticed thast  my OS is now 10.8.3 (not 10.4.9), but was unable to esit it (below).

Edit your computer information in your profile (click on your name).  In any case, this would be best posted on the 10.8 forum since my experience with 10.8 is seeing a computer through an Apple Store window running it.  I'll ask this topic be moved.

  • Vivitar "Vivicam 2755" digital camera does not mount to desktop

My mother recently acquired a digital camera. She acquired it from a second-hand store, which did not include an interface cable or software. The manual (and the USB port on the camera) indicates that a male-male USB cable is necessary for photos to be copied to the hard drive.
I was not successful in locating such a cable at any local electronics store (I assume such a cable is now out-of-date). I purchased one from a seller on eBay. The brand is "e circuit electronics".
Upon powering up the camera with the cable connected to it and the computer, the following message appeared:
"Software needed for the USB device "USB Interface Controller TEST2.0" is not available. Would you like to look for the software on the Internet?"
I clicked "Yes". After an approximate two-minute wait, another message appeared stating:
"Software Update is not able to connect to the Internet. Please check your configuration and try again."
I queried this discussions forum for assistance in locating software for this camera, or to correct "Software Update"'s issue with connecting to the Internet, but was unsuccessful. The discussion can be located here:
Yesterday, by pure luck while continuing my search via Google, one of the results was a German web site. Through Google translation, I was able to find software that alleviated the message that appeared after connecting the camera with the computer. That piece of software is the Vivicam V2655 (most likely a slightly older version than what I need), located here:
    [http://64.233.179.104/translatec?hl=en&u=http://www.treiberupdate.de/treiber-download/z-dltreiber/download_trei ber_9991007.php%3Fload%3D157665%26extern%3D1%26vendor%3DVivatar%26sys%3DMAC&prev=/searc h%3Fq%3DV2755%2BMac%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG]
Upon restart, I expected a new icon to appear on the desktop as well, but that did not occur.
Is there an application that will reveal such an icon (with the action of a folder) that will allow me to copy the photos in the folder, from the camera to the hard drive? I assumed Drive Setup would be able to do so, but I was wrong.

Your easiest & cheapest way to transfer the camera pictures is to buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer. Note - After you transfer the pics, be sure to drag the memory card icon to the trash before you remove the card from the reader.

  • Digital camera setup not working

    Hi,
My computer all of the sudden is not reading my camera when pluged into the usb. In the past I was able to use my camera with the usb. My computer (flat screen G4) Although is able to read my ipod with no problems. I tried all three usb ports in the back of the computer and all of them do read the ipod. My camera does not require any instalation CD for mac computers. I already went to the camera's website and still no needed software to have computer connect with camera. I know there must be something that I need to download with the Mac website. One person told me maybe it's firmwall that I may need to download. I am having problems finding what exactly I need to download. AND PLEASE DO NOT SUGGEST TO ME TO BUY A CARD READER FOR 10 OR 20 DOLLARS. I already know this, my whole concern is that I was able to connect my camera to my computer with no problems so in this case I just want any sort of advice that I can use the possibly a download or update. FYI I have a G4 Flat screen IMac with OS X 10.3.9. I just upgraded to panther so possible that is maybe when things might of got screwy with my camera. Thanks so much,
    Allison

    Allison:
First of all, you need to know that shouting (using all caps is considered shouting) does not elicit many favorable responses in these forums. Please be patient and courteous.
You made it clear that you are already aware that you can buy a card reader if you wished, so we'll leave that there.
You seem to have tested your USB ports, and they seem to work with other devices. You said that your camera does not need to have software installed for Mac, and, indeed, it worked well until recently.
The suggestion that you might need a firmware update very likely applies to your camera, as your iMac has Open Firmware and never needs a Firmware Update. You might check on your camera for the Firmware Version, and then check on the manufacturer's website to see if there is a later version.
In terms of your upgrading to Panther, it might just be that Repairing Disk Permissions might help. Here's how:
Go to (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left column and First Aid in main column.
Click Repair Disk Permissions at bottom left.
You might also try Repair Disk from the installer disk:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Good luck.

  • Devices and app finder not appearing in spotify for desktop

Hello everyone! Someone can help me? The Devices and app finder tab is not showing up for me in my spotify in version dekstop.  And I'm not able to sync my song from my "local files" to my iphone.  On my iphone:

Apps have been disabled since v1.0.1, see related threads and ideas about external apps. Device sync is possible in individual playlists with the "Available Offline" switch on the right side of the header, as far as I know.

  • New camera profile not "appearing" in ACR, but does in Lightroom

I recently created a camera profile for a Nikon D200, using an X-Rite Colorchecker chart photo and the Chart feature in the DNG Editor.  I exported the camera profile.  When I go to the Calibration tab in ACR 5.5, the new profile does not appear in the drop down list with the other camera profiles.  However, when I go to the Develop module in Lightroom 2.5, the new profile does appear in the drop down list there.
I am running Windows 7.  Snooping around my root drive I find that if I look within the Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles directory (referenced in the Fraser and Schewe CS4 Camera Raw book as the Vista location for the profiles) I can find no camera profiles and when I place the new profile there it still does not appear in ACR.  When I look in ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Camera\Nikon D200    directory I can see the regular set of camera profiles for the camera, as well as the one I created, but as I previously stated, the newly created profile does not appear in the ACR list.
A side note - I did some experimentation with camera profile names.  I added "XX" to the end of the Nikon Vivid profile name (not the extension), and then that profile no longer appears in the ACR list of profiles.  I removed the extra letters and then the profile reappears in the ACR list of profiles.  Seemed odd behavior to me.  I also noticed that the profile I created with DNG Editor is noticeably smaller than the others provided by Adobe (28K compared to 110k).
Hope someone has a suggestion for me.

Your reminder about both Photoshop (main) and Bridge needing to be shut down for changes to take effect reminded me that I had Bridge set to "auto-start at log-in".  So I checked and it was still running (shown with the other hidden icons).  When I "shut it down" from the UI I had thought it was fully terminated.  So I completely shut Bridge down, restarted, and the new profile now appears.
Thanks for the reminder/pointer in the right direction.

  • Digital PDF Booklets NOT Appearing In My iTunes Library For Some Reason....

The title pretty much says it all. Had restored my iTunes music files to a new computer along with all the music and any digital PDF booklets that I had. Trust me the PDF booklets are successfully imported on my new pc but for some reason I am having a devil of a time getting them to show up in the iTunes lib. I purchased a new album that had it's own digital booklet and THAT booklet HAS shown up in my lib but for some reason the rest of my digital booklets just won't. Even when I go to the folder in which they are stored and double click on them. They open, but I thought that maybe doing so would automatically add them to my iTunes lib but this is not the case. They ARE on my hardrive, and they DO open up easy enough. Thing is for whatever reason known but to God himself they will NOT appear in my lib. Does anyone have ANY clue as to what I should do?

PDF files don't carry a tag so if you reimport them all you get is a title. In fact now that iTunes supports PDFs for iBooks they might even default to being categorised as Books (if so, change the Media Kind to Music) otherwise they're likely to be hiding down in the Unknown Artist/Unknown Album section. The iTunes "form" for digital booklet names is *Digital Booklet - <Album>* so if you type "Digital Booklet" in the search box all should be revealed. You need to edit the properties for each one with its Album, Artist & Album Artist so that it can then appear listed with the album it belongs too.

  • My camera does not appear in the source list on 9.2.3

after updating my camera software, my camera no longer appears in the source list on iphoto '11.  I am running version 9.2.3 of iphoto on a MacBook (OS X 10.6.8).  I'm not sure how to revert to the previous verson befor the update.  Any ideas?

Since you do not tell us any information about the actual problem except that it does not work a couple of things to try are generally the problem - make sure the camera is set to mass storage mode - that is what iPhoto expencts - and once you get your photos safely off the card (image capture maybe or if it moiunts to the desktop the finder) use the camera to reformat it

    HI,
    Restart the Mac.
If that does not work  I would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • HDD icons not appearing on my Gnome desktop when mounted [SOLVED]

I have several ntfs partitons that I'd like to see as icons on my Gnome desktop.  When I ran Debian/Lenny, I would mount them like so:
    $ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda2 /mnt/D
After that command ran, a new icon (HDD) would appear on my Gnome desktop.  I didn't mess with fuseblock at all.  I'd like to get this behavior with Arch but don't understand what I need to do.
    Thanks!
EDIT: foutrelis solved this, see his post below.

It looks like if the mount point is under /media it will show up on the desktop. This is not the case with /mnt.
You're the man, foutrelis!  That did it!  I can't explain why it worked mounted to /mnt/D under Debian but /media/D works for me!  Thank you for the reply!
Now if you can tell me how I can edit the list of partitions that Gnome gives users, you'll be batting 1000.  Basically, I don't want every single partition to appear in the list.
