External display options?

I have a 14" iBook G4 and I would like to get a widescreen display to connect to it for watching DVD's and Quicktime movies. I don't have a TV (and don't plan to get one) and I'm getting really tired of watching widescreen movies letterboxed on my small 14" screen!
I don't know anything about displays or if this is even doable or practical, so I'm looking for advice and suggestions. Any help will be appreciated!

It works perfectly, check this post/
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=949895&tstart=0
but you might need to buy a video adapter, it will depend on which computer you have.
You will be able to have two screens with the same image on the two or two different screens, having your mouse going left to right from a screen to another.
just perfect.

  • New white macbook, no external display option !

I recently got my white macbook replaced with a new one. My old white macbook was great, once i pluged in my mini-vga adaptor to my macbook i hooked it up to my tv, when into display settings and set it appropriatly. Now i got a new white macbook. I plug my mini vga adaptor in, put it to the AV channel on my tv and nothing. And when i go into my macbooks display settings theres no arrangment feature! theres nothing for external displays at all ! Whats happened?!

I downloaded that - when i click on This Mac it simply says "This Mac Model Can Not Be Found, Please Check You Have The Most Up To Date Version Of Mactracker". Then when i search for updates it says i have the most up to date version. Bahumbug! Useless!
I've not been having a good relationship with technology lately at all! Obviously my adaptor is now useless, and unless I have a plasma/LCD TV or a new computer monitor, I'll have to deal with not having any ability to hook this up to my television. That was a feature I used on a regular basis.
Im getting more and more frustrated - I had the opportunity to buy the new Aluminum macbook but it didn't even have a firewire connection which i rely on for my home studio, so i settled for this lesser spec'd white macbook which now also can't do the TV-out function i used regularly. Brilliant.

  • IMac 5,1 20" external display options

I currently have a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and a 20" 1080i TV, and they work albeit the screen is hardly legible in terms of type when I connect the two. I'm considering getting a 1080p monitor or TV to replace it to get the sharpness of progressive display and I want to make sure I get a wide screen ratio. I don't need colormatching. What 20" display/tvs have a VESA compliant back mount and HDMI and 1080p compatibility that won't be any harder to read than the display on my iMac 5,1 (the white Core2Duo).
    Thank you.

    Hi AB
While I can't speak for the Mini-DVI to HDMI and HD TV setup, I can say that I also experienced poor text quality and overscan issues with a previous TV setup.. For over a year now I've been using a 21.5" LG Flatron +(Mini-DVI to DVI)+ with my 17" 4,1 and it's a sweet setup. It really only took a little profile work, mostly on the 17" to get them near perfect. I use the LG as my main display for browsing, movies, photo editing and use the 17" for Finder windows, iTunes, Preference panels, etc.

  • Windows 7 Bootcamp and Thunderbolt to VGA Adapters for External Displays MacBook Pro i5?

Is it possible to connect an external moniter to a MacBook Pro using a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in Windows 7 (professional)? I have tried and tried, when booting, both moniters (both laptop and external) show the "Starting Windows" page, but the external blacks out on the user selection screen. That gives me hope... is there a driver out there that will let me use the external display in Windows 7?
    MacBook Pro
    i5, 4gig, 750gig.
    Windows 7 Pro
    Mac OSX Lion
    LG Flatron Wide
DisplayPort to VGA adapter (not apple brand, purchased on eBay).
    Thanks.

You shouldn't require a driver.  I would try booting as usual, then plugging in your external display.  In windows, you can hit "command-P" to toggle between your external display options (mirror, extend, etc.).  Once you do that, you should see the new display show up.

  • Question about using HD LCD TV 1080p as external display

When i connect my MacBook to my new Samsung LCD HD TV, it set the screen resolution correctly to 1080p. The picture seems very nice, but when I move some text to the big screen the text is not so clear.
Why not? Am I doing something wrong or can I do something to make the picture (text) nicer?

Screen resolution, in general, is a hard thing to explain to individuals who don't work in graphics manipulation, and for good reason. It seems backwards at times. How is it that a 36" 1080p TV can appear blurrier than a 24" 720p TV? Why is 720p better than 1080i?
As far as using a 1080p display with my computer, I've settled on a 24" Samsung 1080p monitor/tv. I find it's a good balance between pricing, ppi, readability and other factors that one might consider important when looking at external display options.
Frankly, modern computer OS GUIs are not designed to be used on a display that is upwards of 8 or 12 feet away from you, no matter how big it is, or how high its resolution is. They take advantage of high resolution displays so that sitting close to a screen is less taxing on your sight over time. There are alternatives, obviously, like Media Center and Apple's media software, which are designed for using a computer on a television.

  • S10-3 external display problem

I have a problem when connecting my S10-3 to my LG TV (32", full HD) using a male-male VGA cable. The annoying problem is, it only works occasionally. Sometimes it work perfectly, but sometimes both device (S10-3 and TV) detect the connection. There is a beep sound on my S10-3. Also the TV acknowledge there is a RGB connection to it, but it doesn't show the my netbook screen. I already select external display option on the Lenovo Display Device Switch (Fn+F3), but it doesn't effect the sometimes working sometimes not problem. Anyone experience the problem and know the solution? Thanks in advance

    could it be cable issue?

  • How do i use an external display with my macbook pro?

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • How can i drive 2 external displays with my macbook pro?

I just purchased an Macbook Pro and wanted to know if there is a solution to drive 2 external Apple
Cinema Displays simultaeously.  (Set up so displays operate as 1)?

I believe the TripleHead2GO requires all three external displays to be identical. Verify this with a call to Matrox. There is also a maximum resolution limit for the three displays together, which you'll want to be sure is acceptable to you and will look OK on your monitors. Ideally, the maximum resolution the TH2Go supports for each display will be the maximum resolution each display is capable of when used alone, because the displays will be sharpest at their maximum resolutions. If used at any lower resolution setting, they will be noticeably blurry.
I'm not aware of any other three-display options for the Mac that enable the monitors to operate with normal responsiveness (USB video adapters are slow). Yes, the TH2Go is expensive, and that's probably because it's the only game in town.

  • Is there a key on the MacBook Pro to toggle display options for a projector

I have had some difficulty getting my InFocus projector to consistently work correctly with my MacBook Pro. Is there a key on the MacBook Pro that toggles the options for projector display? There was one on my last MacBook and my previous PowerBook.
    Thanks -
    Dudley Warner

No, there is no longer a key to control external display modes (it's F7 on my 1st gen MBP, but the option was removed along with the embedded numeric keypad in the Early 2008 models). There's not a substitute keyboard shortcut (with the exception of installing a macro player like Keyboard Maestro). Your main option is System Preferences > Displays (as stated, ticking the box to show Displays in the menu bar provides a helpful shortcut).

  • Problem with T400 and External Display....

I have a new T400 (less than 1 month old) with the shared memory Intel Graphics setup and I cannot get it to work with an external display of any kind.
I've tried 2 LCD panels (one widescreen, and one 4:3), 2 analog monitors, and a video projector without any luck.  All of the displays I have tried work fine with my older Lenovo R61.
I've updated to the newest display drivers and tried working with the various settings under Graphics properties in Vista - Single Display (notebook, monitor), Intel Dual Display, Extended Desktop, etc.  The best I got was a cloned image on the larger widescreen LCD panel that appeared for about 1 minute and then stopped.  I recreated this 4 or 5 times, but the image would not stay on the external display.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

go into bios, check your video output option and whether you selected Internal + VGA, i think... i will check for you on my X60s....

  • Problem with resolution of external display

    Hi,
I am trying to use external display with my Unibody Aluminium Macbook Pro (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 2.26Gh, snow leopard). Cable setting I use is quite complicated as it is: macbook: minidisplay port>hdmi> DVI D : display. Display is LG Flatron W2242T (4:3).
So I hooked everything up and macbook detected display without any problem. The problem arises when it comes to resolution. Maximum resolution I can set (and in fact the only except 800xsomething) is 1152x870 and not only it is to low, but also it does not respect 4:3 ratio so it looks quite bad. So bad, that i cant really work on a setup like that. When I try to change resolution to any other, Display goes black. I tried using some apps, but they dont really work.
What can be the problem here? Is it connection?
    I would appreciate any help.

And once you've cut thru the clutter of cables and adapters, remember the max you will be able to push the Flatron is its "native resolution", that happens to be:
    Screen Size
    22"
    Screen Type
    TFT LCD
    Wide Screen
    Yes
    Brightness
    300cd/m²
    Contrast Ratio
    8000:1
    Viewing Angle
    (Horizontal/Vertial)
    160/160
    Response Time
    5ms
    Resolution
    1680X1050
    Supported Colours
    16.7M Colours
(data taken from LG's product page)
If you happen to have a late model MBP with the widescreen option, the Mac and the display will be on a 1:1 ratio, both are the same. Else, if you have a regular MBP, the monitor has more resolution than the Mac (1440x900) and distortion will occur if you do video mirroring.

  • Cannot get external display to show image

Hi, I've just bought a 13" MBP and I'm new to the Apple forums so I apologise if there is already a thread for this (I haven't seen one so far).
I bought the MBP from my local Apple Store along with a case and a mini-DVI to VGA adapter to connect the MBP to my 20" Samsung 2032MW TV/monitor. That night I connected the two and they worked fine (plug and play), however two days later I tried again and my Samsung screen stays black and goes to standby. I have performed a self check on the monitor and there are no issues there so I presume there is an issue with settings on the MBP. I did find a thread that mentioned the graphics performance settings in the Energy Saver menu but I don't seem to have those options available (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/SduYqB9Smn0DvzqjqIg-JAXluH7Dnp9rqlqjc2UNeXg ?feat=directlink and http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/NO6JMa9JcuIHRhCDED1QzgXluH7Dnp9rqlqjc2UNeXg ?feat=directlink).
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sorry! Yes I've been into the Display settings and tried Detect Displays and Gather Windows.
This is how my Display settings appear once I have connected the external display (MBP screen flashes blue):

  • Can I use External Display on a Window 7 64bit 13" Macbook Pro Early 2010

I have a 23" LED LG Monitor , It has VGA Cable , RCA Cable and HDMI Plug (but no wire). I am asking now if whether I should need a VGA Cable or a RCA Cable or a HDMI cable. I know there's the Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter. Should I get that? And does window 7 64bit professional bootcamp support any external display? If not , is there another way to get it working.

You should be able to hook it right up just like if it was a "normal" Windows Laptop.
Windows would be the one to set it up with. Make sure you've updated Boot Camp.
You probably should use an "Apple Mini Display" port -to- HDMI adapter as that should give you more display options, etc. (I'm not sure how high the 13" can go on resolutions, HDMI or VGA may not matter?)
You MAY have to use a separate sound cable between the laptop and monitor as some HDMI -to- (whatever) adapters don't carry the sound signal via an "adapter".
The next choice would be a Mini Display port to VGA adapter.
You may want to also ask this question in the "Computing Hardware/MacBook Pro" area as they may have more info?
    Hope this helps...

  • Connecting an Air to an external display?

When checking out with a new MBA you have the option of purchasing an adapter to connect to a DVI. However, it looks like this is a mini DVI to DVI cable, and I can't see that the new MBAs come with a mini DVI port. Why would there be an option to buy a cable that won't even fit with the computer? Or will it? I have a DVI display I'd like to use with a new MBA - is this possible? Is there a thunderbolt to DVI converter?
Also, if I do find a display that will work with the Air, how does it work? Can I use it with the screen closed, or does the computer just go to sleep? Can I use it in dual mode, so that I can have both the Air screen and the external display working seamlessly together (not mirrored) or will the Air display automatically turn off when connected externally?
    Thanks!
    Amber

Well, before you run off to buy anything read the documentation in the user manual to see what it tells you on P. 26.
Thunderbolt port (high-speed data, video, and audio)
Connect Thunderbolt-compatible devices for high-speed data transfer, or connectan external display that uses Mini DisplayPort. You can purchase adapters to connectdisplays that use DVI, HDMI, or VGA.

  • How to change external display resolution WITHOUT clicking "CONFIRM"?

I have a somewhat unusual situation. My MacBook laptop is actually now a ModBook (a pen-tablet computer), and as such I no longer have a trackpad attached to it. All of my inputs are via the stylus, tapping directly on the built-in display.
This works perfectly fine, except when I need to give presentations on an LCD projector (which is quite often lately). I like to use the projector as an external monitor, so that I can run the Keynote presentation on it while using my laptop screen as the presenter's display, with the upcoming slide, etc. If the projector doesn't give me an ideal native display option (sometimes, the aspect ratio for the  3 or 4 resolutions available in the Displays drop-down in the menubar turn out to be stretched or squeezed), then I, naturally, have to open the Display System Preferences and try out different resolutions.
The problem is, since my stylus only interacts by clicking directly on the built-in-display, I have no way of moving the cursor over to the external display when the dialog box with the "Click here to confirm change/You have 15 seconds..." message appears. So I can never click it ... so I can never confirm the new settings.
The workarounds I've used so far are:
    - Mirror displays (not ideal, as I need the presenter preview of the next slide)
    - borrow a mouse from someone (usually from a Windows desktop, frankly) and plug that in to briefly mouse over and click the confirm button
I'd love to find a software workaround that allows me to NOT mirror displays and also doesn't require me to carry around a mouse all the time (my laptop bag is already overstuffed...).
    Thanks.
