External Displays & Kernal Panics
Last year I twice had to get my logic board replaced after two slightly different "events."
The first panic started with the green and purple pixeled screen and then suddenly was caught in a "panic loop."
The second happened suddenly. The screen simply would start up, though the computer seemed to be running.
I often use a 20" Apple Cinema Screen as an additional monitor and now I'm paranoid about connecting it up again, fearing that this may be my cause of kernel panics. This is not good though, cause I need that screen to be productive.
Am I just paranoid or could this be causing problems?
As the display acts as a hub, its USB or Firewire ports may be damaged and thus causing a kernel panic, or one of the peripherals you have attached through it doesn't have the appropriate drivers. If you used the Migration Assistant to migrate from a PowerPC Mac, some of the PowerPC drivers could have migrated over, and thus causing a kernel panic, as many drivers have to be rewritten for Intel compatibility. If not, try to isolate the problem down to the hardware test that came with the computer, possibly swapping RAM for higher quality RAM as my FAQ* explains:
http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
And if neither of those fixes it, backup your data*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And check to make sure the directory is OK*:
http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
And if that doesn't help, then erase and install the operating system.
If nothing but an Apple external display is hooked up, to the computer, and an erase and installed operating system is there, you can expect the display itself to be in need of repair, if that's the only thing that causes a kernel panic.

External 1440p display kernal panics in 10.9
It's a 2008 iMac connecting to a DVI-D only 2560x1440p monitor, using the old MiniDVI - DVI adapter. Kernal panics when plugged in. Anyone know why?
Hello renx95,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

New 30" display = Kernal Panic attack
So I just took the plunge and bought a 30" display ( and a Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition Video Card) for my Mac G5 dual 1.8gHz, 1.5gB RAM, OS 10.4.8. I have a Lacie PCI Firewire 400 card and USB card installed as well. The kernal panic is when the screen goes half bright and has the grey box in the center of the screen that say's in multiple languages; I must restart my computer, right?
So that's happned to me twice since I bought the monitor & video card two days ago. It happens when I've put the system to sleep (but not every time I put it to sleep). Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

Late 2008 MBP problems with external display (kernel panic)
I have an intermittently recurring kernel panic with a similar signature in the backtrace. In my case it only happens while playing World of Warcraft with an external monitor attached (and even then, only while doing particular things -- not necessarily high load activities, either). I ran a full set of diagnostics (Apple Hardware Test in full mode, and also Tech Tool Deluxe from the Applecare CD) and neither found any problems.
Anyway, here's my panic log, hoping that somebody will be able to help out. I'll be taking this in for service when I have a couple of days I can spare without my laptop.
(BTW, all of the "Panics Since Last Report" were of the same ilk).

Been having problems with imac for weeks now, cutting off after using for a short period of time. Had sent it away to be repaired 3 times, first 2 times the logic board was replaced, the 3 time the logic board and power supply were replaced. Got it back today and instead of cutting off it is now displaying kernal panic errors after being on for approx 15 mins.
Here is the report that displays when turning it back on, can anyone help?

It appears you have Sophos antivirus software installed on your computer. This appears to be what is causing the KP. Because there are no viruses for OS X having antivirus software is not necessary, I'm guessing you may have come from a PC background and may be carrying the notion antivirus software is necessary for OS X too. Antivirus software frequently causes more issues than it solves as you are now seeing. Try following the manufacturers instructions for uninstalling, then uninstall, once you have removed it empty the trash. Next restart the computer in Safe Mode to clear some of the caches. Then restart normally and see how your computer performs. -
Leopard and kernal panic after starting up external hard drive
Hi,
After upgrading to Leopard, everytime I turn on my external hard drive after my Powerbook G4 starts up, I get a kernal panic and it says that I need to shutdown. So I do and when it restarts the disk is mounted fine with no problems. Why would it have a kernal panic? I don't need to access the external all the time so I don't need to have it on. What should I do?
Thanks,
MaryHi,
The drive is connected via firewire through the back of my Apple Cinema Display firewire hub. Out of curiosity, when I disconnect the drive from the ACD hub and connect it directly to my Powerbook Firewire connection, I found that I did not get a kernel panic when I turn on the drive. It mounts without a problem. It may be the ACD firewire connection.
This is the panic log that I get.

Kernel Panic at Startup w/ External Display
After updating to 10.5.2, whenever I boot with my external display and my MBP lid down, it will kernel panic and make me shut down by holding the power button down. That never happened before 10.5.2.
However, it will work if I boot with the MBP lid open. Then once I'm all booted up, I shut the MBP lid and it goes to sleep. And then I just wake the computer w/ keyboard and it works.
But that's such a PAIN in the a$$...............
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
P.S. I have ALL updates, I've also done a repair permissions too. This article explains what Kernal Panics are:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
This one shows you how to troubleshoot your OS:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
Kernal Panics at start up are most of the time a software issue so you may have to reinstall your OS.
You can try an Archive and Install first as shown in this article.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
If that doesn't work then you'll need to do an Erase and Install as show in this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1103.html
If you are uncomfortable doing so then make an appointment at your local apple store at www.apple.com/retail for the Genius Bar.
Also if you purchased Applecare with your computer you can also call AppleCare at 1800-APL-CARE and they can trouble shoot over the phone.
Good luck!. -
Kernel panic when trying to use spotlight with external display attached
Having an issue with my fairly new MacBook Pro (purchased in April). When it's connected to an external display, I will get a kernel panic 100% of the time if I click on the Spotlight icon. The same also happens sometimes when clicking Documents or Downloads in the dock, but that is infrequent. This only happens with an external display attached and I have tried multiple external displays and cables. Following is the kernel panic report. I don't really know how to read it, so if anyone has suggestions they would be much appreciated.

As a first debugging step, try rebooting in safe mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
and see if the panics occur then, though quite frankly it appears it may be an issue with your video card and/or drivers. -
Firewire connections to external HDs cause Kernal Panics
I know that this subject has been raised already but would just like to add my voice to the topic.
I have to Mac Pros and each have two external Western Digital MyBooks connected via firewire 400 in a mirrored raid setup. This ran on both machines without issue in Tiger, however if I connect any of the drives in Leopard with firewire will result in a kernal panic.
When I connect the two drives via USB then all is well again, again on both machines. Obviously there's an issue with the firewire interface and external hard drives.
Anyone like to add to this?Hardware or software can cause the kernel panic. You don't have to waste time and zero out your drive. Just isolate the cause whether it be software or hardware then deal with it.
If you decide to re-install OSX then don't add anything but that monitor and see what happens. -
External Display Causing Kernel Panic
I have had a Samsung monitor hooked up to my ~2008 iMac (Intel; see below for more information) for about 3 months and I've had no problems. A week ago, I started getting the "You Need to Restart your Computer" screen due to a kernel panic. I followed Apple's directions for troubleshooting a kernel panic (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742), and I narrowed the problem down to my external Samsung display.
The kernel panic happens every time my external display is connected and the screen saver has been on for about 8-10 minutes. I only get a kernel panic when the external display is connected. See below for my computer information and the kernel panic log. How can I fix this problem?

com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily 2.6Solution: The GPU heat sink temperature sensor was faulty. I couldn't figure out what part number the temperature sensor was, so I just ordered a new GPU heat sink off e-bay for $12. The heat sink assembly contains the temperature sensor. I installed the heat sink (including removing/applying thermal paste), and voila! The kernel panics are gone. The faulty heat sink temp sensor was causing the temp. to read hotter than it actually was, so when it read too hot (GPU diode ~120 Celsius), I got a kernel panic.
After I installed the new heat sink (with new GPU heatsink temp. sensor), the GPU temperatures read normal, and the Apple Hardware Test showed no problems (before it was giving an error code of 4SNS/1/40000000:TG0H).
Ahh, the sweet satisfaction of fixing this problem myself for $12 without ever having to deal with Apple. -
Booting from external device causes kernal panic
I am suddenly unable to boot my first generation MacPro 1,1 from any external device. I have tried my Leopard install DVD, a USB thumb drive, and an external hard drive. All of these result in a Kernal Panic. I was able to boot into the hardware test from my original cd that came with the computer. The hardware test reported no problems.
Here is the kernal panic I get every time:

Any help would be appreciatedI removed my Nvidia 8800gt video card and replaced it with the Nvidia 7300 that came with the computer. I can now boot from external drives. I guess there is some conflict with the 8800gt.

Kernal panic - mac mini, external firewire hard drive
hi, i've got a lacie fw400 hard drive, that i've had for about 3 years...works fine on an old intel mac mini, but when i connect it to a new mac mini with a fw800 port via a fw800/fw400 cable, it causes a kernal panic on waking from sleep.
is anyone else seeing this behavior? any idea how to fix?OK, dismount and disconnect the LaCie drive.
Check that the directory of your boot drive is healthy*:

Could external monitor cause kernal panic?
Hi there, I'm trying to track down the cause of a couple of nasty kernal panics that have caused me to have to zero my hard disk and re-install twice in the last couple of weeks.
The last panic log I have (not certain it contains info from the last panic) has no reference to software as far as I can tell, I checked the memory with the apple hardware test and a freeware app called Rember, both tests came up fine.
I use a cheap and cheerful LCD monitor for a split screen Logic Pro setup. I noticed that the grey screen with the apple logo distorts while OSX is booting when the extra monitor is plugged in...... It's made me wonder if that is the source of my troubles, could that be the case?Hardware or software can cause the kernel panic. You don't have to waste time and zero out your drive. Just isolate the cause whether it be software or hardware then deal with it.
If you decide to re-install OSX then don't add anything but that monitor and see what happens. -
Brand new MBP Retina constant kernal panics
I have a new MBP Retina with Mavericks 10.9.4 installed. I have received constant kernal panics since a few days into it. It seemed as though they were being cause by the io/logic boards, but those have both been replaced now. OS has been reinstalled multiple times to no avail. BSD and kernals blamed are all over the place (Dock, WindowsServer, mds; filesystems, AppleSMBusController, IOAcceleratorFamily)
The latest kernal panic is as follows:

I've got many more where that came from. I just don't want to post a wall of text.An update on my situation.
I had my macbook pro replaced with a brand new one by Apple, which was brilliant customer service.
Before giving back the old macbook, I decided to copy all my essential documents over to a usb stick. I also formatted my time machine external drive so it was blank.
Rather than restore this new macbook using my time machine backup, I set it up as a new machine and copied just my documents from my usb stick. I then proceeded to carry out fresh installs of software I regularly use but nothing non-essential (namely Spotify, Firefox, Chrome, xCode, Adobe CS5, Squidman, MAMP and Office 2011).
For three days everything worked beautifully - until last night when I had my first kernel panic on this machine. Nothing was running apart from firefox when this panic occured. The report is below and states the process which was running was 'plugin-container' which is part of firefox.
Below is the log output:

I'm running the latest OS X Mavericks - all updated to date.
I've tested the thunderbolt display with a friends MacBook Air and I see no problems there.
Any clues what is going on? Or it this latest Kernel Panic just a coincidence compared to my previous macbook?
Thanks in advance! -
Just upgraded to Leopard now I get constant kernal panics!
I just upgraded my G4 PPC to 10.5.8. I can do things okay on my computer for a while then it does the kernal panic. All updates have been done except the prokit 5 one (I use logic and the last upgrade messed with it). Could this be causing the issue? Here is the info. I hope someone can help so I can start doing more recording!

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your currently installed OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now, you did not indicate if this upgrade to 10.5.8 was from an earlier version of Leopard or if you first upgraded to Leopard then to 10.5.8 using the combo updater. I'm assuming the former, so after you've done the above repairs reinstall the 10.5.8 Combo Updater. If you did not use a Combo Updater, then you can download it from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If the above doesn't help then I would suggest reinstalling OS X as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. 2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
And, if the above doesn't help start looking at the probability of bad RAM.
