External files - how to store

I have external jpg files, pictures to store against rows in a table.
ie : a property address, and a picture of the property as a jpg file.
Is it correct to be using BFILE type to store the picture or is there a more efficient way of doing this.
Many properties have the same picture as it is a block.
thanks in advance.

Although BFILEs are quite functional, you may find that storing the images in database tables as BLOBs is more flexible in the long run. You may want to consider searching for images based on visual criteria, such as white houses (i.e. a lot of white in the image), or with large lawns (a lot of green(?) ;) ) - BLOBs enable you to add plug-ins that can provide this functionality. As a side effect, your images are then covered by the various security and recoverability features that Oracle offers - if you use BFILEs, you have to cater for backup and recovery as a separate exercise.
I suggest that, if this is a property/realty database, you may want to store the images in a separate table from the rest of the property-specific details. This means that the repeating images of which you speak don't need to be stored for every property - those properties that have no photograph can instead hold an key to the same "default" blank image instead. A cross-walk table that maps images to properties may give more flexibility, thus:
PROPERTY -< PROPERTY_IMAGE >- IMAGE
#prop_id #prop_id,img_id #img_id
Of course, a more experienced poster on this forum may spring forth with numerous reasons as to why BFILEs are better, but my experience suggest BLOBs are the way to go. ;)

  • Document from file - how better store information about document?

    I have a text file that contains information about documents (content from groups than define the document - one row is one document). Every group content from fields (from 10 to 70 in every group). Document consist of 9 groups. In one documen can difference number of groups (> 1 group). E.g. one document can have 3 group1, 2 group6. In another document 2 group9, 1 group 6 and so on. I need to store document in DB and must edit document (by JFrame). To store document I use object MyDocument to store information about document.
    3 solutions:
    1. Store every group as list from hastables
    public class MyDocument {
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group1;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group2;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group3;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group4;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group5;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group6;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group7;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group8;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group9; 2. Store all groups as one list from hashtables
    public class MyDocument2 {
      private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> allGroups;
    } 3. Store groups as lists consist from individual objects (MyDocumentGroup1, MyDocumentGroup2 and so on.)
    public class MyDocument3 {
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup1> group1;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup2> group2;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup3> group3;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup4> group4;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup5> group5;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup6> group6;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup7> group7;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup8> group8;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup9> group9;
    public class MyDocumentGroup1 {
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group1;
    public class MyDocumentGroup9 {
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group9;
    }What solutions is better? Or maybe has another solution?

    Maybe better to store one document in ONE HashMap
    public class M2Document {
         private HashMap<String, String> data = null;in the next format:
    -------------key ---------value----------
    GroupID_FN | some value
    where, GroupID is ID of group, FN - field number
    example:
    -------------key ---------value----------
    Group1_1 | some value
    Group1_2 | some value
    Group2_1 | some value
    Group2_2 | some value
    Group3_1 | some value
    Group3_2 | some value

  • How to store 2C array to a singl binary file

    Hi
    I have to store multiple waveforms output that is each 1D array to a single binary file. how do i do this.
    i can store 1D array to binary file and retrieve it by reading the binary file and plotting the waveform. but i am not able to store 2D array to the single file. how do store many 1D array in one binary file,
    Thank you. Hema

    (We would also need to know your LabVIEW version. If you have a very old version, things would be quite different.)
    As Smercurio_fc already mentioned, the option to "prepend array size" would make things much easier here, because then you would read it as a single 2D array.
    Here's how that would look like. This is probably the recommended solution, just for simplicity reasons.
    Not prepending the size is more useful if you write the data in increments, but later want to read it as one.

  • Should I use an external hard drive to store the files while editing and how should I do this?

    Getting used to FCPX and want help learning how to store my Canon D60 Video files on either my internal Mac book pro or on an external hard drive while editing projects?   Do the files need to be transcoded on the computer drive or can that happen on an external HD?
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Well, in my opinion, it all comes down to speed. There are a lot of editors that swear that working with footage on your system drive will do all sorts of horrible things, cause crashes, etc. Really its a bunch a malarkey. The most it will do is slow you down when your system needs access to the drive. Bandwidth is bandwidth is bandwidth - its all the same. If working with video on your system drive caused crashes, so would doing thousands of other things and we would all have dumped apple long ago for Microsoft or linux.
    Here's what I tend to get for sustained read speed on various drives (ie reading a few large files like video files):
    USB 2.0: 25 - 30 MB/sec. Drive RPM doesn't matter much since USB is limiting factor, unless you're running a system.
    Firewire 400: 28 - 34 MB/sec.  Drive RPM doesn't matter much since FW is limiting factor
    Firewire 800: 55 - 60 MB/sec.  Drive RPM doesn't matter much since FW is limiting factor
    internal drive on SATA II or III connection, or USB 3.0 external drive:
        7200 RPM: ~100 MB/sec
        5400 RPM (most laptop drives): probably ~70-80 MB/sec
    SSD: 250-500 MB/sec if installed internally or over USB 3. USB 2 or firewire connection for an SSD is a waste of SSD speed *except* that they have fantasticly fast random access for reading many small files, so I got a really fast launching system in an experiment installing a system on an SSD and connecting it via FW 800 - but that's not relevant here
    so - to make a short story long - do whatever works for you. avoid using USB 2.0 or firewire 400 drives if you're editing HD - you can't play transcoded ProRes 1080p footage from them reliably. And once you have more than one clip overlapping, like at cross dissolves, you're sunk. You're internal drive is likely much faster, even with the overhead of the system using it too.
    Blackmagic Disk Speed Test on the app store is a good HD speed tester. Ignore all the video specific stuff at the bottom - its mostly for uncompressed video, which I doubt you're working with.
    Since i have a recent macbook pro (late 2011) and my edits are usually not more dense than 3 layers of video at a time (mostly concert video rather than narrative film), I actually almost never transcode, or even render - and this is for 1080p HD video - because FCP X is so good at playing the imported original h.264 files. I store my media I'm working with on my internal laptop drive (which i upgraded to a 7200 RPM) or a FW 800 7200 RPM external drive.
    h.264 files from the camera are much smaller than transcoded ProRes files, so they will play back from USB 2 or firewire 400 drives, but I would only do it in a pinch.
    enjoy your editing.

  • How do you transfer iTunes to Windows 8 when you use an external hard drive to store you music/media files

    I've tried a number of different search terms and yet can't quite seem to find an exact answer to my question.
    I currently use a Windows 7 computer and have my songs for iTunes on an external hard drive.  I would like to find some step by step instructions on how to transfer my library to a new Windows 8 computer and still utilize the external hard drive to store my music.  What I find very confusing is I have similar folders for iTunes on both my computer and the external hard drive (ex. Album Artwork, iTunes Library Extras, Previous iTunes Libraries).  I'm not sure which files to move over to the new computer to make for a smooth transition.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

  • My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

    My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

    You'll get better performance if you use a Firewire hard drive (especially if you buy a 7200 RPM drive). Firewire's IO speed is significantly faster than USB 2.  USB 2 has a theoretical max speed of 480 Mbps except that it has extremely high over-head.   The fastest speeds you can typically get are about 300 Mbps.   Firewire, on the other hand, has very little overhead.  The fastest speeds you can get are very nearly 800 Mbps.  You will typically be constrained by the maximum read/write speed of the drive, not the speed of the I/O on the Firewire bus.  Now if you had one of those nice shiny new Macs with the Thunderbolt I/O and a Thunderbolt drive (Light Peak) ... I think they alter space and time so that your data arrives before you know you want it.
    Also... unless you want to buy a solid state drive (very expensive), try to keep your hard drives from becoming much more than about 60% full if you want great performance.  A nearly "full" hard drive is, on average, only about half as fast as the same hard drive when nearly empty.
    USB 2 will work perfectly fine... just not as fast.
    Also... it's much safer to move the entire Aperture library than to "relocate masters".  Your images must be managed.  You can Aperture manage them, or you can manage them.  But someone has to manage them.  If you "relocate" them so that they are no longer stored inside the Aperture library then you'll need to work out a system of how you decide to organize things and it's critically important that you don't start moving files around or deleting things without Aperture's knowledge.  If you do, you'll break the links to your masters and start having problems with missing masters.  If you have Aperture manage the library then you don't need to worry about any of that stuff.... it's safer.
    Do make backups (use the Aperture Vault or use some other backup program, but make sure you back up your work if you care about it.)  There are only two kinds of hard drives in the world:  (1) those that have failed and (2) those that are going to fail.  There are no exceptions to this rule.  Hard drives are cheap.  Backup software is built into Aperture and into your Mac.

    i have a 2tb time capsule wondering how to store a lot of my files and photos on it to free up some space on my hard drive on my iMac

    For iMac please use USB or even better a FW800 or if you can afford it, a thunderbolt drive.. on your 2011 Mac.
    Time Capsule is not a suitable place to store your files.
    1. You will have no backup.
    2. TC cannot back itself up, nor can Time Machine backup network drives.
    3. Apple says specifically of iphoto not to store library on network drive.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
    It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6692100
    4. Other libraries may not corrupt but will run very slowly. iTunes for example.
    Please purchase the fastest drive out of the external ports you have available.. usb2 although the slowest is still faster than TC over gigabit. It is also more reliable. TC are not a noted reliable storage drive. It is designed as a backup location for TM files.

  • How do you capture a view as an external file?

    I am trying to write an interface using C++.NET. So far, everything is working well. It connects the database to a pre-designed recordset and accepts SQL commands.
    The next step is to input SQL commands to create Views. In order to use those Views in my interface, I believe they need to be stored in some external file that would be accessible to my interface application.
    How can I capture and store Oracle 10g XE Views ?

    I'm still not sure we're talking the same language here.
    PL/SQL is the programming language.
    SQL is the query language. PL/SQL can contain SQL statements.
    Views are stored queries, not stored result sets. You might create a view as
    SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW employee_departments AS
      2  SELECT e.empno, e.ename, d.dname AS department
      3  FROM   emp e
      4         JOIN dept d ON d.deptno = e.deptno;
    View created.
    SQL> desc employee_departments
    Name                          Null?    Type
    EMPNO                         NOT NULL NUMBER(4)
    ENAME                                  VARCHAR2(10)
    DEPARTMENT                             VARCHAR2(14)
    SQL> SELECT * FROM employee_departments
      2  WHERE  department = 'SALES';
         EMPNO ENAME      DEPARTMENT
          7499 ALLEN      SALES
          7521 WARD       SALES
          7654 MARTIN     SALES
          7698 BLAKE      SALES
          7844 TURNER     SALES
          7900 JAMES      SALESHowever the base tables are read and the join repeated whenever the query is issued - the results are not stored anywhere and it does not make sense to talk of putting them in a file. What if the underlying data changes? Your users read from the file and get the old results. Oracle provides mechanisms for handling application cache structures but it's advanced stuff (I've only read about it, I'm not a 3GL programmer myself) and I would have thought not suitable for someone trying to put up a simple application quickly.
    You said you can get your C++.Net application to connect to the database and get result sets. Just use that same approach when accessing the views you have created. You don't need a 'file'.
    > Most users of consumer software dont really want to spend the time and effort to familiarize themselves with the workings of a sophisticated database. Ideally, for them, they don't even know a database exists in conjunction with their application.
    I still don't see what this has to do with anything. No they will not be familiarising themselves with the workings of a database, they will be interacting with your fine application.

    Hi Guys,
                 Can anybody tell me how to store multiple files from SAP into Application server.in my application i have to get the data from SAP tables BSEG , BKPF , BSAK and BSIK that to daily i have to do.
                Any Logic  or Code for how to do is welcomed.
                        plz help me urgently.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
      directories creates basis. If you have task to store data in application server you already should have information into which folder you have to do it. If you don't have this information because it is just for example training for next task then you can use your personal folder into which you have access. To get list of all available folders please look at attached code and form get_directories (you get the list of folders you see in transaction AL11). But don't forget: If you are using open dataset you have to have rights to access application folder!
    Here you are code which I use to upload text files from local disc into application folder

  • How to open and read an external file in Dashboard widget?

    I am new to Dashboard widgets and also Javascript. I have written a widget that needs to open and read a file on the local file system. I have searched a lot and have not found any documentation or reference on the internet as to how to do this.
    I know it can be done since there is a checkbox in the widget attributes that says "Allow External File Access".
    can anyone help me out here?
    Thanks

    You need to define the AllowFileAccessOutsideOfWidget key to Yes.
    You also need to define the AllowFullAccess key.
    You may also need to define the AllowSystem key (to Yes of course).
    Mihalis.
    PS. If you cannot find any other documentation please check http://widgetbook.blogspot.com.
