External HD and Thunderbolt display

I have the THunderbolt Display with Macbook air and I plug my external HD into the thudnerbolt display. Before unplugging the macbook from the thunderbolt display I always undock it. This leads to it shutting off as it runs directly from USB power. However as soon as I unplug my macbook from the monitor, the monitor decides to power up the external HD and it is always on now. Is that normal. Is it good for my HD to be running constantly , is there any workaround besides unplugging it to get it to stay off? Thanks

Connect one Thunderbolt port of the drive to the Thunderbolt port on the computer.  Plug the MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter into the other Thunderbolt port on the drive.  Connect the display to the Mini DisplayPort adapter.
If the display uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)
<http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
you will also need a DVI to ADC adapter.

  • Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display crashes

I have a Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display which has recently started to crash.
Only modifications I have doen lately is I swapped the CD/DVD drive for a harddrive and put in 16 GB of ram
but it has been running for more than a month with these hardware additions without problems.
Today my Macbook has started to crash frequently within 10 min to 1 hour after plugging in my thunderbolt display.
I tried to check CPU heat, change RAM but it keps crashing.
When it crashes it either gives me a blue screen, a black screen or a distorts everythings and freeze up.
When rebooting I have to press Command-Option-P-R to clear NVRAM / PRAM.
I found a few support threads from people having similar problems so I started to disconnect the thunderbolt display
and without plugging it in my laptop works fine.
I have done a SMC reset also but that has not resolved my issue.
Below is the crash report and if anybody has any suggestions what to do to resolve this please let me know
My thunderbolt display was purchased in late 2011
If this is not solveable what options do I have ?
    Thanks !

The other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before.  Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas??  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop.

  • MBPr Windows and Thunderbolt Display

    Hi there,
I am trying to have my MBPr and Thunderbolt Display working under bootcamp with Windows 8. All the peripherals attached to the TBD are working fine but the display remains black/off. I am pretty sure that a solution exists but can't find the right. I've tried and under Windows 7 behavior still the same, whereas under MacOSx TBD display works fine.
    Thanks for you support !
    RV

I made the usb stick back when I installed windows 7 that made my imacs amd gpu see the monitor connected as it did in osx and in the same was as any other windows computer with a connected extra screen
(so I turn it on in windows display settings and maybe the amd catalyst software i forget)
when I upgraded to win8 it just used the win7 driver and it still worked fine
same when I later got te official win8 drivers from apple

  • MBP Retina and Thunderbolt Display color correction

What are my options regarding color correction for a new 13" Retina MBP and Thunderbolt display using Spyder color calibration system, or equivalent?  Really important I nail that down before purchasing.
    Thanks!

Disable GPU drawing in Photoshop's preferences, and let Apple know about their video driver problems.

  • MacBook Pro Retina and Thunderbolt display

    Hi all,
I noticed a for me new strange behavior when running  my new TBD on my new MBPR. Running Mountain Lion.
When the lid is closed, that is when the MBPR's screen is closed and I use the TBD as an external display it only works when I use the TBD's power supply or the Mag Safe dito, do i disconnect the power from the MBPR the screen geas black... ok , that is as described in the manual. But....
..in the same scernario with no external power to the MBPR... if I open the MBPR, that is pull up the MBPR's screen they both spring to life anf can be used again???
    What's the logic about this?
Please tell me the relevance why this is possible?
    Regards
    /Cekari

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open System Information (in /Applications/Utilities) without the Thunderbolt Display plugged in, and choose Thunderbolt in the sidebar. What does System Information say? Then, try with the Thunderbolt Display plugged in, and tell me the results.
Also, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 And do a PRAM reset > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • I have a Thunderbolt iMac 27" with a Thunderbolt Display attached.  I would like to use the iMac and Thunderbolt display in Target Display Mode for my new Thunderbolt MacBook Pro.  So far, it seems I can only use the iMac screen itself.  How do I do this?

When I press the Command + F2, the iMac screen becomes a secondary for the MacBook Pro, and the Thunderbolt Display becomes the primary screen for the iMac.  I was hoping that both screens would become secondaries for the MacBook Pro.  Does anyone know how I should proceed?  I have tried to connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Pro, and the iMac to the Thunderbolt Display via the separate Thunderbolt cable, but there was no difference.  And since the MacBook Pro only has the one Thunderbolt port, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.
Having said that all the language about TB would suggest that this would be possible. http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    High performance on display.
Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

  • Macbook pro and Thunderbolt display on battery power no go.

I use my macbook pro mainly on my desk with the thunderbolt display and its lid closed. While having the power adapter connected to the macbook everything works fine. When I disconnect the power adaptor and try to wake up the computer it comes to life for a few seconds and then goes back to sleep for good. I cannot use the thunderbolt display while having the macbook on battery power. That causes the issue of the battery not discharging which I am aware is pretty bad. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

I kind of figured this out. The reason I wasn't satisfied was that without the power adaptor when you hit a button on the keyboard the monitor actually wakes up the computer, works fine for a few seconds and then puts the computer to sleep. That kind of proves that it does work, technically at least. The problem is going into sleep mode afterwards.
Anyway i guess it just doesnt work. Thanks.
ps. If there is a way of discharging the battery with software while the power adaptor was still on, would be great help.

  • IMac and Thunderbolt display connectivity

    Hello everybody,
Several days ago I've bought new Thunderbold 27' display and connected it as a second screen to my iMac. Video works fine but I've just discovered that all ports of that display are not functioning, i.e. USB ports are not working, and I can't see its camera and speakers from my iMac.
Is it possible somehow to get it working? Especially USB would be very helpful.
    Thank you.

  • Windows 7 and Thunderbolt Display

I have installed BootCamp using the reccommended method, a USB Drive and an ISO.  BootCamp installed it's drivers at the end of the initial Win7 install and all seem to be running ok..BUT when I hook up an Apple "Thunderbolt Display", I get a black screen on theTB display while my MBP13Retina is just fine.  All the other ports and audio that the TB Display supports seem to work just fine, so what happened to the Thunderbolt Display video driver????  I see others have similar problems but is Apple working on this issue?  By the way, the TB display works just fine in MAC OSX 10.9 Mavericks.  So, where is the TB Display driver for Win7?  Inquiring minds, want to know...

I'm beginning to believe that this all started after upgrading to OSX 10.9 Mavericks.  Apple need to update their BootCamp drivers to recognize the Thunderbolt display.  Till then, It will be hit, and probably miss whether anyone can get it to work using Win7 Bootcamp.  I have heard others are having the same problem with Win 8.x as well.
C'mon Apple, fix this thing..I want to use your display in Win7 as well as OSX !!!

  • Connection between Mac book pro and thunderbolt Display

When im connecting my mac book pro to the thunderbolt display ,it keep disconnecting from the internet. What i need to do with connection? Please guide me ,what i need to do when im connecting thunderbolt display to my macbook pro and wifi will work?

Bluetooth paring for file transfer is not supported on iPads.
You can use Airdrop if both devices support it, or a 3rd party App, but you cannot directly pair an iPad to a Macbook and transfer a file over the bluetooth connection.

  • What's the deal with DVI and Thunderbolt displays?

I have up and until now only ever had a MacBook, I planned on getting an iMac desktop but that didn't work out. However, now I am set on getting a Mini, but I remember there was a lot of comotion with the display connector and was hoping someone could guide me on that. I am looking to get a second hand late 2012 Mini, 2.3GHz and 16GB RAM.
I know there are Thunderbolt displays and DVI ones and converters and all that but what is the issue? Which one should I get?
Thanks in advance, it was one problem I thought I wouldn't have to worry about.

All I can say is that I have a TB display with my Mac Mini (late 2012) and it works great.  The Mini has a TB port so works with the display perfectly.  If you do not want a display that has speakers, camera, mic and ports on the back then you could get a less expensive non Apple monitor but I see some users have display issues depending on the specific monitor being used..  I will others comment on that.

  • What is the best way to clean the display on an rMBP and Thunderbolt display?

Can I use a damp cloth to clean my display on an rMBP and a Thunderbolt display, or should it be a dry soft cloth?  My displays are in desparate need of cleaning.

This is what I now use:
    http://www.officeworld.com/Worlds-Biggest-Selection/DRACB702288/13Q1/?gclid=COjp r8rOj7kCFVNo7Aode3EAxg
I discovered it in the supermarket.  I dampen a small microfiber cloth (6x6) with the Windex and wipe the display.  Then I use a large microfiber cloth (12x15) to dry it.  Excellent results.
NOTE THIS IS NOT THE CONVETIONAL WINDEX CLEANER.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro 13" and Thunderbolt Display Question

I am considering purchasing a 13" MacBook Pro to use with the Thunderbolt display.  I do a fair amount of photoshop work and am concerned that the lack of a dedicated video card and the dual-core as opposed to quad core in the 15" will be a limiting factor. I would be purchasing the i7 with 8GB of ram in the 13".  Has anyone used this combination (Thunderbolt and i7 13" Pro) for Photoshop, and how has it performed?
    Thanks!

Thank you for your response, I will definitely way that option more heavily. I was hoping to be able to accommodate the 13" form factor. As a student I bring my computer everywhere so the smaller size would have been nice.
    I
f I may waste a tad more of your time, is the reason behind the GPU and quad core because of photoshop or the 27" monitor in general? The only reason I ask is that I am only a casual photoshop user so that alone may not sway me, but if powering the thunderbolt display is of a concern for the lesser device then the decision becomes much easier.
Sorry to ask so many questions, I know a decent about computers but I am not too familiar with the thunderbolt adaptor and as such am not sure how that interacts with the GPU and such.
    Thanks again!

  • Macbook Pro and Thunderbolt display day to day work question

I have a late 2013 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro and recently bought a Thunderbolt display.
When I'm in my office I use it on the display don't have the display anytime I'm not in the office.
Given the larger pixel dimension on the display, when I'm in the office and use the display, I'm having to re-size windows constantly to make maximum use of the real estate.
Are there any settings on the Macbook Pro and/or the Thunderbolt Display where without having to adjust I can have windows maximize the available real estate?
