External HD Trying to Start-up

On my Mini Mac (mid 2006 model) I have LaCie stackable Mini Hub. The LaCie drive has worked flawlessly for ~4.5 years. A few weeks ago the external HD was having a hard time starting up. At first it just makes a clicking sound. After several minutes of just clicking it started making a click sound followed by a sound like the motor was temporarily engaging. After several minutes of attempts to start-up the HD finally mounts.
I quickly changed-out the HD but the new one I replaced it with keeps doing the same thing. Strangely, both the old and new HD would start-up with no problem if the Mini Mac stacked on top of it was warm.
Any Ideas?

Most likely it is a failing AC power supply brick on the LaCie unit. This happens more than it should.
LaCie sells them on their website.

Have used Superduper app. to back up and checked back-up occasionally to see if all files present  and appeared OK.
I had previously started machine using original CD #1 to try and replace Eudora which was acting up. Did not knowingly touch Safari.

How can I successfully download from the Maxtor back-up?

    Further info.
I checked the content of my other back-up and found the bookmark Bookmarks.plist in the library under Safari
Dumped the existing copy in the computer and drag-dropped the back up. All bookmarks restored.
Solved the Stickies problem by using Spotlight  to find file "stickiesdatabase" and did a drag- drop to replace file. All data restored.
Re Ical data loss. Used Spotlight to find iCal document in  Library - Preferences where I found com.apple.iCal.plist in folder.
Got ready to make change but did not immediately remove file. When I returned to Preferences folder to grab above document,
the readable descriptors had been changed to code consisting of some upper case letters and/or single symbols!
So now I cannot tell which is the symbol  iCal.plist
Thanks for leading me so far, but how do I find that plist for my calendar?

  • Emac tried to start then stopped, finally after 3 attempts it started

After a hard drive failure i run my emac on an external hard drive through a fire wire.
That worked OK till yesterday when it tried to start but after a few seconds of the normal fan noise and before the screen lit up, it stopped. I hit the switch again and it did the same thing 3 times but on the 4th attempt it started but a white screen came on and told me to type "mac-boot" and hit return.
    It finally started.
The external hard drive was still running OK at the time it had stopped, it was internally that it had stopped.
I took the back off the emac and vacuumed the dust from inside and after that it has since started normally every time though it seems slower to start, but I could be mistaken about that as I can't now remember noticing how long it took to start before.
Someone said the problem could be the power supply failing.
Is there any way for me to diagnose what exactly is wrong, since an emac power supply is not same as a PC power supply?
Could a PC power supply be modified to replace the emac power supply as I have a failed PC with a good power supply I could use if it would work?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello and thanks for your reply.
I neglected to mention that at the time of the hard disk failure I put a new hard disk inside too with the intention of using it as a back up to the External Hard Drive but I found it was easier in the end to get another external hard drive and now I use Time Machine to back up on to that 2nd external hard drive every few days.
I disconnect the 2nd external hard drive when I'm not backing up data on to it.
Most of the time when I boot up the emac it somehow knows to go straight to the 1st External Hard Drive instead of the Internal Hard Drive but occasionally it will go to the Internal Hard Drive and when it does that I have to go to System Preferences and then to Startup Disk and actually select the External Hard Drive icon and that's what I had to do every time when it was having that weird starting then stopping phase, ie, every time during the starting then stopping phase, when it did start it went to the Internal Hard Drive even after I would go into Startup Disk and select External Hard Drive it would start on the Internal Hard Drive, so in the end I didn't bother trying any more and I just connected to the internet through the Internal Hard Drive until I took the back off and vacuumed the dust out and ever since I did that it's been running normally, ie, it's always selecting the External Hard Drive again and running at what seems to be normal speed for everything too.
I just don't know why it went into that starting then stopping phase.
When it was in the starting then stopping phase the internal fan noise would stop but the little white light next to the DVD door would stay lit up so it was definitely getting some power from somewhere but it was failing to go on and boot up because the power to the internal fan had failed ie, I could clearly hear the fan stop only 3 or 4 seconds after hitting the start button.
I've just had a look at the capacitors that you suggested and they look perfect, like new in fact, they have a shiny metallic top with a + indented in the top and they are flat and they show no sign of a dried up liquid or any bubbling up anywhere.
Anyway, your reply was helpful since you ruled out the Power Supply and the capacitors, so thank you for those.
The friend who advised me how to get going again after the initial hard disk failure, ie, via the External Hard Drive connected by fire wire, did warn me not to touch anything in the back that wasn't directly related to changing the hard drive but thanks for the heads up anyway.

I have an MacBook Pro 10.6, using disk utility I tried to verify my disk, but it came up with the message, please use your start up disk, I tried this, starting the computer up and pressing C, but it ejected the disk, the same thing happened while I running the computer. Is the hard drive damaged as laptop doesn't seem to recognize the start up disk ? If so, I presume I will have to put in a new one.
There haven't been any problems with the computer, apart from a sticky curser,I have run a permissions programme from disk utility, there were a lot of different ones, but it seem to be able to fix them.
    Any comments or ideas ?
    Thank you in anticipation.

First backup your users files off the machine to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine!)
    Most commonly used backup methods
Next to startup from the disk, have it inserted, hold c or option/alt (wired or built in keyboard) and then boot the computer and or select the disk when it appears and click the arrow.
Disk Utility is under the Utilities menu on the second screen.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you used the wrong 10.6 disk, it will spit it out or have issues, use the one that came with that machine or if it's defective, call Apple for a new one.

My mac doesnt start. All i get is the gray screen with the apple and the loading icon but nothing more happens. I tried to start it in safe mode but it doesnt help. What can i do?

If you have a external USB enclosure - trying installing your hard drive in that enclosure and connect it to your usb port - restart your macbook while holding down the options key.  If you Macbook boots to your desktop then you have a faulty cable.  If you get the same error, then your hard drive just died on you.
    good luck.

  • MacBook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. Tried to start in safe mode but get the same screen. The only thing different was that I loaded the zedge sync app yesterday. Now getting this problem.

Macbook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. I tried to start in safe mode, but get this same screen. The only thing different is that I added the zedge update app to do a sync for adding ringtones to my apple cell phone. How can I get a good boot. I am fairly new to apple computer.

Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying.  The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
Check the health of the disk.  Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R).  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.  Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable.  A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so.  If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one.  Any 1 TB external drive will do.
Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk.
Reformat the external disk.  (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in Recovery Mode.  Start Disk Utility.  Plug in the new disk.  Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
    Partition Layout > Single Partition
Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
    Apply
    Select the Restore tab.
Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
    Click on Restore.
It may take a long time for the backup.
If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk.  If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more.  If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally?  If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.

I believe you've posted this multiple times. Once is all that's needed. Also, please don't use all caps. Aside from the fact it means you're shouting it's also harder to read than mixed case.
The error means a bad fan motor or the HDD has failed. In your case it's the latter.  You can try the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

Trying to start in safe mode but keep getting a panic advisor? Any idea why I cannot start in safe mode?

    Hi garfire1,
Do you have an external disk with a Time Machine backup on it?
If you do, try to boot to the Recovery Partition of the TM disk.
    - During a boot press the Option key after the chime but before you see a grey screen and then select the TM disk
    - If you boot to this Recovery Partition, you have options to run Disk Utility to try and Repair/Repair Permissions of the internal disk or you can select to restore from the TM Backup.
    Cheers

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.

iMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
    I did this;
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    the result was.
the 'permissions' are sometimes wrong, but they repair
the hard drive is either repaired or OK
the iMac will then restart and work fine and sometimes shut down and restart OK

I would be grateful for any help

    Hi Miriam,
    Thanks yes,
here we go -- after running disc utilities it tells me directory OK and disk OK (or something like that) When I replaced the Hard Drive, I started 'fresh' erased/formatted the hard drive (new Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB) and it has just got 'tiger' on it (and upgraded to whatever it is now I think I remember 4.11, I can't tell at the moment as I have got the back off) I didn't transfer any data I just took the old drive (Seagate 160GB) out and stuck the new one in.
I've just changed the battery (I didn't really think it would work, but I was still hopeful and I'd bought the battery anyway) I did the LED thing, the internal power button thing, and the resetting the SMU thing (with crossed fingers and bated breath) but -- so I'm thinking is it the power supply? I read some of Jim's weighty, but worthy tome and resolved to remove the power supply and have a look. On opening it up, it does look as though, one (at least) of the capacitors has 'blown' (by the way, just in case I sound like I know what I'm talking about, I don't of course, I'm just quoting Jim's words;-) I'd love to send you a picture of the inside of the power supply showing what I believe to be a 'blown' capacitator (and I'm going to try to send one to Jim as I think it might be useful to him and others. can I attach a photo in any way or would you like to send me your email address <Edited by Moderator>
    Thanks
    Pete
PS it's still 'weird' to me, why it starts and runs well, when started from tiger (or whatever) and then starts or restarts from the Hard Drive unless I leave it a few hours and come back and try to start it
again? wow it's late nearly 4.00am here in london UK.
