External Isight wont plug into my mini mac 2010

I have an external isight and a Mac OS X 10.6.7 (Mini Mac) but the firewire that goes with the Isight doesn't fit into the firewire port on the Mini Mac. Is there some type of adapter I can buy, and if so, will the external Isight work with my mini mac. I spent the entire day trying to figure out a webcam/audio system to go with my mini mac, and come to fine out we had an old external Isight hidden in the closet.
Thank you.

Well, I just learned the word firewire today by googling it and looking at a picture. This one is from 2004, and I just read the box, and it is for sure a firewire. UGH..
Ok, I will find an adaptor for FW800 to FW400 ports.
Thank you!

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine

How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine.
I want to move my itunes library from the mac HD to an external plugged into the time capsule, but I want to be sure this drive will still be backed up by time machine.  I currentlly see no way to do this.

There is no way. You can connect the drive to your Mac and remove it from the Time Machine exclusion list. Then it will be backed up, but that will stop when you reconnect it to the TC. While it's connected to the TC, you can copy it manually to another AirPort Disk by following the instructions here (with a slight modification):
Using AirPort Utility to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk

  • Poor movie/video playback from mini Mac (2010) to 50 " lg LCD tv

Hi I just got my new mini Mac 2010 release and have it set up running through my 50 inch full 1080p LCD LG tv.
It's running through a Belkin hd cable from mini Mac to the tv and get great quality from picture desktop on 1080p setting on the Mac.
However when ever I watch a DVD,movie from iTunes through front row the quality is terrible and get "blocky" picture in dark parts of the movie.
I love my new Mac but this is driving me crazy I have tried calibration and changing the settings on my tv.
Please any help with getting better quality playback from movies on my Mac as the picture is worse than an old vcr

    Welcome to  Discussions!
Have you tried using DVD Player instead of Front Row to play the DVD?
I do hope you realize that a DVD is not HD quality. Because DVDs are lower resolution than your TV, when you play them full screen on your TV without an upscaling player they are not going to look as good as they did on your standard definition (SD) TV.

  • External isight wont work with imac g4

    Hello,
I recently purchased a second hand isight camera using ebay.
I have an older imac g4 and the isight wont work with it at all.
I have scoured the forums on this topic and looked through all of EZ Jim's suggestions but I think my problem is a little bit different.
I'll explain exactly what happens and my troubleshooting so far...
The imac G4 is powered off, I plug in the external isight via firewire 400
The imac boots up into leopard 10.5.8 (using leopard assist)
In system profiler the isight is listed under the firewire tab.
( I can post system profiler info on this if its needed)
When I turn on the camera ichat launches, but then in the video tab it says no camera is connected.
Photobooth just has the no camera sign, but interestingly when ichat is opened photobooth says "camera off"
sometimes photobooth even lets me click the photo button, it counts down but then it doesnt take a picture... obviously!
    Skype doesnt work.
I have an imac 24" running snow leopard 10.6.6 .... that also detects the camera but it won't work with any application such as skype or ichat.
I have tried (on my G4) unplugging my usb bluetooth module but nothing changes.
My G4 is connected via ethernet to an external router.
The firewire cable seems ok, I dont have any other firewire devices, but if it was a problem with the BUS or the cable then im guessing it wouldnt show in system profiler.
I am thinking the camera is probably damaged, but before I start a paypal enquiry I would like to see if it is just my computer or a setting i need to change.
(oh I used the application isight updater in core services but the install button is greyed out)
    Any help would be amazing!!
    Thanks!!!

Well, about all you can do would be to try a different and known good
FireWire cable, as a replacement for what may be a defective FW400
cable that came with the iSight camera. The cable can be defective
with one bad wire, yet sometimes appear available to the computer.

    • iMac G5 (iSight), & Intel-based iMac: Using External video camera:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2819
If you know of someone with an older Mac without a built-in iSight
camera, to test that one on, this may be an OK idea. Not sure if you
could get any traction by taking the camera to an Apple Specialist
and ask if they could check it out for you; that may also cost you.
{And since your computer does not officially support Leopard 10.5,
the other avenues of support would probably not be open to you.
    At least not with the old iMac G4 and an unsupported 10.5 install.}
I have an external iSight camera which was included with my G4 Mini
1.5GHz model, and that appeared to work OK with 10.5.8 at one point.
But I really have no need for it, since I don't use photobooth & so on.
And haven't tried that with my iMac G4 computers at all. No need to.
With a computer not equipped with an iSight camera, the Leopard 10.5
installation should still support the eventual addition of one; even if the
computer itself appears to not officially support a Leopard 10.5 install.
(You refer to Leopard Assist, a means to install in slower CPU Macs.)
The FW cable is about the most easy to consider at this point.
In the course of a year, I've found good replacement cables at
several places, even those at thrift stores in perfect shape, work
and I use them for FW external hard disk drives, primarily. To have
spares is nearly always a good idea. Test & keep known good ones.
I'm not certain how the external iSight FW camera may work on
    a newer Intel-based 24" iMac with a built-in iSight camera, too.
Does your 24" computer have FireWire 400+800 ports? Can you
choose an external iSight camera and ignore the built-in one?
These secondary topics have probably been discussed in the other
forum area for Intel-based iMac computer models; if you chose to
try & use that camera with a model computer with one built-in...
    • Apple - Support - Discussions: for Intel-based iMac
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
There is a possibility, if never tried and the iMac G4 computer was
acquired second-hand, that the FW port within it may be band; but
the cable is the first item since it is cheapest, in troubleshooting.
So, anyway, the hour is late here (1AM) so hopefully the matter
can be resolved with a known-good replacement FW400 cable.
You should not have to restart the iMac G4 (800?) model in order
to get a FireWire item to be recognized. It should appear in the
System Profiler's list under FireWire, such as things normally do.
Of course, the camera could be defective as well. Been some
time since they were available on sale, new from Apple...
You could ask around to find out if there is a way to use that
external iSight camera with your newer Intel-based 24" Mac
by someone having it ignore its own built-in camera; in a
way as to not affect its normal operation, that is.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can't see external HDD when plugged into TC

So I have done research here and haven't found an answer yet.  My first problem was the the drive was NTFS so I moved all the data and formatted it to exFAT.  Both the PC and macbook pro can read and write to the drive when plugged into each system.  When I plug it into the TC it won't show up anywhere.  It is an externally powered drive.  What have I missed or doing wrong?  I want to use this drive as a network drive to keep my itunes library on so 3 systems can access it.

The problem is that the USB port on the TC will only support drive formats of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT 16/32.

  • I can't get into my Mini Mac

    HELP!!!!
I have recently revided the set up my Mini Mac with two user accounts. No problem. Because the other user could access files on my hard drive, I set up an access code to the hard drive in order block the other user's access...big mistake.
Now, since the hard drive is locked, the operating system can not boot up.
My system disks are back in Australia and I am here in Kuching.
I ahve tried to access holding the option key and other keyboard prompts to no effect.
I tried the OS-X disks for another Mac (also OSX) here in the school but they won't boot up. At best I get a prompt asking to select the Hard drive or the system CD inserted but both are marked with an X and will not load.
Instead of booting up into the OS-X, it goes into the Linnex code and asks for user and password which I can provide.
Any ideas? I am desperate and feel very silly!
    Cheers!

  • Can an iSight be plugged into a modern Television?

I've never really played around with firewire that much. Will firewire cameras work if plugged into firewire ports in tvs? I know DV camcorders work just fine through that port but are firewire webcams compatible?

    Hello SuRoot,
To your broader question of will iSight work as a FW camera, the answer is "Yes" as long as the iSight receives 25Volts DC through the FW cable. Here's a cable example:
    http://www.1394store.com/eshop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=62&pf%5Fid=0814C%2D05
The difference between camcorders and iSight is that the camcorders are powered either by a battery or by a plug-in adaptor. The iSight relies on the power to be supplied by the computer: through the flat, pointed one-end, FW cable.
If the TV powers the iSight, it probably would work, but I doubt that that is the case.
Here is a typical cable that you would expect to connect a camcorder to the TV (6-wire to 4-wire):
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005NIMR/ref=pdbxgy_textb/103-0183606-4799069?ie=UTF8
If this is the cable you plan to use from the iSight to the TV, no power will be supplied to the iSight and it won't work.
Any camera or camcorder needs power. Apple designed the iSight to only have one cable, supplying both power and data.
    Hope this helps.

    Bill Gallagher

  • TS3850 I am using a Sony HBR -VLU camera to import into Final Cut 10. Plugging into an I MAc that doesn't have a firewire port. The camera is not being recognized by the computer. The camera is set to play tape too. Why is camera not recognized?

I am trying to import from the camera into an I-MAC. I'm told the I-mac does not have the firewire port, but has thunderbolt. Is the only way to get video from the camera via a firewire port? Is someone giving me bad information as to the firewire port not being on the I-MAC? The camera is not being recognized. Thanks in advance.

Apple has moved on from Firewire and the current iMacs (and most MBPs) have Thunderbolt, USB3 and USB2.
There are Firewire toThunderbolt adaptors. Here's one. You also want a four pin to nine pin FW cable to run from your camera to the adaptor.

  • Can external speakers be plugged into my HP Pavilion dv6?

I have a nice set of Altec Lansing speakers with a subwoofer from my PC (that I do not use anymore).  Can these be plugged into my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop?
I cannot find a port for the plug (a regular plug like for headphones into an Ipod).
There are plugs like this on the front for headphones and a microphone.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What is the model of your "Altec Lansing speakers" ? If they worked on your PC, they should work on your laptop given they have the RIGHT 3.5mm plug.
    Regards.

  • Shuffle wont plug into usb power adapter

I bought the usb power adapter that plugs into the wall for my shuffle, but the shuffle doesnt fit in the adapter. What do I do>

    John,
I have two Shuffles, and both work just fine with the USB Power Adapter. Assuming you can plug your Shuffle into a computer's USB port, then the problem must be with the Power Adapter -- unless you're trying to plug the Shuffle in upside-down. For a new adapter the fit is tight, so push a little bit once you're sure you've got the Shuffle oriented properly. When you get it to fit, you'll find that the Shuffle charges best when it's turned OFF -- and be patient once you plug it in because it takes almost a minute for the Shuffle's status light to illuminate.

  • Can Time Machine back up an external hard drive plugged into a Time Capsule

I have iTunes and iPhoto libraries that have outgrown the hard drive on my laptop so I've moved them on to an external hard drive. Since I'd like to move around the house with the laptop, I've plugged the external hard drive in to the Time Capsule so that the files on the external hard drive will be accessible on the network. Now that my really important files live on an external hard drive, I want to back it up.
Time Machine is backing up my laptop's internal hard drive to the Time Capsule drive, but I can't seem to figure out how to make Time Machine also back up the external hard drive that's plugged in to the Time Capsule.
    Is this possible?

I understand that [Chronosync|http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html] ($40 U.S.) can do that, but I've never used it.
If you do that, you'll want to back it up to a disk image on the TC's internal HD, or a separate HD. See #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details.

  • Terrible wifi on mini mac 2010

So, I have just purchased a new Mac Mini (2010) and like many people here I am having problems with wifi. Initially it wouldn't even hold a connection, so I etherneted up and did an OS update and at least it maintains a connection now, but man is it slow compared to my other wireless devices.
I've read other people suggesting it's cause the antenna is on the bottom and maybe to turn to upside down and yeah - this helps. But even then it is still about 50% slower than my 2 Macbook Pros and an Imac I bring home from work on occasions (also - how dumb a design does this make it that I can't have it sitting like it was designed to sit?).
Not sure why I am bothering to post this cause I don't think it is faulty - unfortunately I think that it is just badly engineered for this particular (and most basic) task.
I still love my apple products but this has been a big disappointment.
If anyone has ever had this problem and managed to come up with a reliable fix let me know but I'm not expecting a solution - just wanted to vent..

The houses in my development are on 1 acre lots. My unibody 2010 Mini picks up a minimum of seven of my neighbors' networks, four of which always have 2 bars or more. When I use my Mini wirelessly I always get a reliable, fast connection despite the Mini and Airport Extreme both being close to wireless phones. That doesn't sound like the Mini has antenna design problem to me.
There are Mac wifi troubleshooting articles here and here. If none of those ideas work you might want to try Snow Leopard's Getting Online and Networking forum or calling Apple.
Venting on Discussions is pretty pointless as it is a user-to-user forum. You can leave feedback for Apple on their Feedback Page.
