External monitor = cinema display problem

Hi All - new to the iMac, looooong time Mac user. So I had a 20" cinema display plugged in to my G4 before getting the iMac and now I am using it as a 2nd monitor (extended desktop). Love the added real estate!
My problem is this - if I plug my keyboard into the USB ports on the cinema, the iMac doesn't 'see' it. Yet if I plug my iPod cable into the FW400 ports it shows up fine and syncs with iTunes. Also, the keyboard WAS working plugged into the cinema display for a few days, but I had to unplug it and when I plugged it back in, no joy. I have restarted with it plugged and unplugged, repaired permissions (not like that'd help) and zapped the PRAM. Under System Profiler, the iPod will show up under the Firewire tab (as does the cinema display) but the keyboard does not show up under the USB tab.
So, can I 'force' the iMac to 'see' the keyboard? Any help will be appreciated and rewarded!

So the end that plugs into the Cinema Display splits a couple inches from the end into FW, USB, and DVI. What about the end that plugs into the iMac DVI out? Are there 3 ends to that as well? If so can you just unplug the USB portion of that cable from both the iMac and the Cinema Display and use a completely seperate cable to hook up the USB?

    Yikes!
Why do I download BUGGY BETA OS?  When will I learn ? DON't DO IT!
    (sorry for shouting...)
There are no short cuts, no work arounds, no simple solutions...only updates
Please Apple code monkeys ..tear down this problem.
    Thanks.

Try this: Use the [√]Mirror displays oprions, choose your resolution, then desect the [  ]Mirror displays.
It shouldn't supossed to be like this, but until they send an update, this workarround will work.

  • HT5019 MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Can I have more than one application displayed at a time?

I would like to have my MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Question, how can I have more than one application displayed at a time? IE: I would like email on one monitor, Finder on my laptop, and iTunes on the other. Possible?
With extended desktop, it appears that I can only have one application presenting at a time. Sort of defeats the purpose of having multiple displays.
I am using the HDMI and the mini HDMI connectors.

  • [Solved] Can't get external monitor to display correct resolution

I have a laptop with 1280x800 resolution, I hooked up a spare monitor we had sitting around that has a native resolution of 1280x1024 to my laptop. When I hook it up the external monitor displays a resolution of 1024x768. I use KDE 4.5, so I tried to change the resolution for the external monitor in System Settings but 1024x768 is the highest resolution listed.
I've tried messing around with xrandr through the command line (somewhat anyway) but I'm at a loss in trying to get the external monitor to display its native resolution. I'd like to get the external monitor to possibly replace my laptop monitor as it would add another 224 vertical pixels. Anyone have any ideas?

You had said the native resolution is 1280x1024 -- I therefore assume this is an LCD monitor.
I would not generally expect LCDs to flicker.  At what vertical frequency are you driving the display? Most LCDs operate at 60Hz.  This is regardless of the local power line frequency or television standard.
Many CRT monitors are driven at 75 Hz to keep them from flickering or from "beating" with ambient lighting that is flickering at the local power line frequency (50 or 60 Hz).  Again, this is not the correct thing to do with LCDs.
Bottom Line: Make sure your vertical frame rate is 60 Hz.

  • External Cinema Display Problem

    Hi,
so I have my new MacBook connected to an "old" 20" Cinema Display using the MiniDisplay port and a MiniDisplay to DVI adapter. It has been working just fine since I connected it a couple of days ago.
I have the MacBook lid closed and I am using just the external display at home.
Today I left my room for an hour or so. After coming back and waking the computer from sleep I was horrified seeing my display full of weird artifacts, randomly displayed blue and pink pixels. On top of that the display was turning off and on (going black) every couple of seconds.
    I don't know if it's a problem with:
    a) the MacBook
    b) the display
    c) the connection (adapter?)
Any ideas? Anyone experienced a similar issue?
    Best greetings,
    Tomasz

I talked to Apple tech support today. After initial description of the problem and basic troubleshooting, I was referred to a product specialist. She had me do an SMC reset (shut down, disconnect power cord and all external devices, remove batter, hold power button for 10 seconds, reinstall battery, connect power and start) which seemed to clear up the problem. But it returned later in the day. I called them back and was immediately sent to the product specialist again. The next step is to take it to the Apple Store to have it looked at there. I won't be able to do that for at least another 10 days, so there won't be any more progress on this problem until then.
When I talked to tech support, they had no information on any such problem in their database, which means they haven't heard it from anyone but me. So if you're having this problem, please call tech support and tell them about it. If they start getting lots of reports, then it starts to look like a real problem and not just one guy who might be doing any number of things to make this happen. Apple tech support has been very good those very few times I have had to talk to them. If you are referred to a product specialist, you might have to wait 10 minutes, but it's worth the wait. You're talking to people you can understand who can answer your questions - they're not reading off of a script. You get a case number so that if you have to call back, you can pick up where you left off - you're not stuck explaining everything all over again.

  • Using external HD Cinema display and USB keyboard/mouse with "closed" MBP

I have an early 2009 17-inch MacBook Pro and a ~2007 HD Cinema Display. I routinely hook up my cinema display and an external USB keyboard/mouse when I am at my desk, and I close the lid on the MacBook to just use the external display. When I leave the office (I do about 50% of my work away from my desk) I use the MacBook on its own, often just putting it to sleep while I connect or disconnect the monitor and keyboard.
My problem comes more often when I have used my computer on its own, and I try to plug it back into my cinema display. I have the computer set to ask for a password on coming out of sleep or screen saver, and every so often the computer just hangs when I wake it up--usually when I plug in the external keyboard. When I am able to login, sometimes I am not able to use any of the icons on my desktop--it's almost as if they are not there or recognized by the finder. My solution has been to go into the view options and choose to re-arrange the desktop in some way, and then I can select them again as normal. This is a frustrating solution as 1. it takes extra time, and 2. I loose my desktop arrangement, which makes it hard to easily find what I'm looking for.
Is there a "better" way (order of plugging things in, settings, etc. besides shutting down and restarting) to connect and disconnect my MacBook from my external monitor and keyboard to assure an easy login and use of my desktop icons?

I'm not sure if this is germane, but Apple specifically warns about plugging or unplugging USB or FireWire devices from the laptops while they are sleeping. Doing so can result in kernel panics, crashes, inability to wake up the computer, etc. So specifically they recommend you only connect or disconnect such devices before putting the computer to sleep and after waking it up.

  • External monitor causing playback problems?

Sorry if this has been covered before. I tried searching but it kind of comes down to what verbs people use to describe the problem.
I'm running FCP 5.1.4 on a Macbook Pro, and I just bought a Dell 2408 for an external monitor. A few times since I've hooked up the monitor, when I play in the timeline, the video skips and stutters and keeps looping back to the same section. If I switch to a different sequence, it plays fine. This only seems to happen when I have the cinema preview on. If I kill it, click on the canvas window and hit play, it usually plays fine.
So I've got some workarounds on this, but it's an annoying quirk. Has anyone else had this problem? It seems to be tied to the external monitor, but I don't know if I'm missing a step or something isn't setup quite right.
Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated.

Go to your Audio / Video Settings >> A/V Devices tab and turn of "Mirror on desktop" for Playback ... this will reduce the load on your system as it will not be trying to decode the video for two separate (and different) playback streams simultaneously ie when using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview to display All Frames then you will not see playback in the Canvas window as well, just on the external preview monitor.
And/Or you could also try setting FCP's System Preferences >> Playback Control >> Gamma Correction to "Approximate" ... according to the manual this can offer a little performance boost (but to be honest I haven't ever tested this).
Choosing Real-Time Playback Gamma Correction Options
Whenever you watch your video on a computer display (such as video displayed in the Canvas, the Viewer, or via Digital Cinema Desktop Preview), Final Cut Pro applies gamma correction to the video to more closely approximate the way it would appear on a video monitor.
Note: Gamma correction is not applied to external video outputs such as DV or third-party interfaces because this correction is inherently applied by external video monitors.
If your computer’s graphics card supports gamma correction, Final Cut Pro automatically uses the card for accurate gamma correction. If your computer has an older graphics card that does not support gamma correction, you have two gamma correction options in the Playback Control tab of the System Settings window.
Accurate: High-quality gamma correction. This option is the most accurate but also requires the most processing power.
Approximate: Lower-quality gamma correction. This option leaves more processing power available for real-time effects but results in less accurate color and brightness rendition.
Tip: If your real-time performance is limited, try changing the gamma correction setting to Approximate (if available).
    Hope it helps

  • External monitor not displaying full 1920x1080 (black bars around desktop), Pavilion g6

I have a Pavilion g6 notebook running Windows 8.1. I have an external Acer S232HL display hooked up via an HDMI cable. The resolution is set to 1920x1080 in Windows, and I'm only outputting to the external monitor.
Windows thinks the resolution is set to 1920x1080, but for some reason on the monitor it is scaled to something like 1734x980 with black borders (unused pixels) all around.
All drivers and OS are up to date. Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7640G via an AMD A8-4500M APU.
Somebody posted what looks to be the same problem for this AMD chipset, though for a different manufacturer:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/G505S-doesn-t-full-screen-my-External-Monitor...

    (Workaround)
Since I don't expect to find a fix for this, I've resigned myself to setting the resultion to 1776x1000 and setting the monitor in a 1-for-1 pixel mode (called "Aspect" in the options). I still end up with the borders, but the graphics are nice and sharp because it isn't trying to scale 1920x1080 into a smaller resolution.

  • External monitor not displaying full quality

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 15.4" Retina. I hooked it up to my Acer External Monitor via the HDMI out on the Macbook. My display settings are set to 1080p, however the display seems very blury and pixelated. I used to have a Late 2007 Macbook that I hooked up via mini display to HDMI and that displayed in perfect, crisp 1080p HD. Hopefully someone can help me figure out how to clear things up.

Have you had any luck fixing this issue Marcello? I had the same problem and found that the following fix worked for me somewhat:

  • External Monitor (Dell u2711) problems

    Hi all,
I'm an editor and just bought a Dell u2711 to hook up to my MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz, 4GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M). The DVI would only support up to 1920x1280 so I bought a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter and that got me up to my full resolution for the monitor.
HOWEVER... my computer seems to be too slow or the graphics card isn't good enough to support such a monitor. Is this true? When I use the external monitor as extra desk space and put all my FCP windows in it I get this banding on my subjects when they move. It just looks like very slight glitches and the movement isn't displayed so smoothly. I'm working with 1080p ProRes 422.
When I try and use the Dell u2711 as an external video monitor (display all frames) it lags pretty bad and the motion is stuttery and not showing in smooth motion.
Please help. Would I have been better off with the 27" Cinema display? I thought they were pretty similar monitors. Is my laptop or graphics card not up to the task? Just last Nov. or so I got this laptop with what I thought was the best available graphics card Apple had at the time for this laptop.

  • 2004 Cinema Display Problems

    Hello,
I recently acquired a 30 Inch Cinema Display that was having some screen issues. After first hooking up the monitor to my MacBook Pro laptop, it worked great for about 10 minutes and then I noticed the screen showing burn marks on the right side and sometimes the screen will go white, OR it will try to display the image, but show color bars. I kept turning the monitor off and on, and it eventually works again.
My question is, is there an easy way to fix this problem or anything I can do on my own without taking it to Apple? Does this problem occur frequently? I have tried searching these issues online and not really finding any reliable answers. PLEASE HELP!

that's a bummer that there is no easy fix for this issue. It's frustrating because the monitor works some of the time, and then the color bars appear. Also, it seems like this problem occurs a lot but there is no easy fix. Even Apple said they didn't know why it was doing that.
Anyone else ever have this problem? Is this common?

  • 23" Cinema Display problem

I have a new 23" cinema display connected to a Powermac G5. After a month of purchase, I have decided to change my video card for best graphics performance. Two days after, I experienced total black out on my monitor. I did not know what could be causing the problem.
When i turned on my computer it turns to be ok but after 5 minutes my screen went totally black. I could see the light indicator on the lower right of the screen still green but failed to give a display.
Can anyone help me isolate the problem? If you have experienced this problem before please tell me what to do. I would be very glad to hear your good advice.
    Thank you.

    Hi Karl,
    Good Day!
Thank you for your advice. I already changed the graphics card but got no positive result. Could it be the adapter of the monitor? or the LCD itself? Is there anyway we can further isolate the problem?

  • Troubleshooting 24" Cinema Display problem

I have a 5 year old 24" Cinema Display connected to a Mac Pro using Mini DisplayPort. Several days ago I connected a Kanex Mini DisplayPort and USB Extension Cable. Everything was working fine until yesterday when the display faded to black while I was working. I tried plugging the monitor directly into the Mac and it seemed to be fine. Later on the same problem happened. Now I am unable to get any video on the screen. I tried a different monito and that is working fine so I know the graphics card is OK.
Any ideas about what could be wrong? Is this a fixable problem? Did the extension cable fry my monitor?

The 5mm LEDs that I used for the initial repair can be purchased from any electronics component supplier. Avoid Radio Shack at all costs. I wouldn't recommend using 5mm LED though. I've purchased some 5050 SMD LEDs for the next rendition. I will report back later in the week with my my results and possibly some photos. It's not somethign you want to attempt unless you're confident in your soldering skills. You'll also need to do a little math to figure out how to configure the LEDs and give them the right resistor.
Here are some photos of the 5mm LED job. I parralelled 3 strings of 8 LEDs wired in series and powered them directly from the 24v rail of the power supply. These LEDs are held in with hot glue. On the next repair, now that I know its worth while, I'll use the backlight driver from the logic board which will give me brightness control again. Pardon the mess, I had been working on wiring up  that strip for a couple of hours. It really helps to have an adjustable lab power supply on the bench to test as you go. Also, note the hot spots in the bottom right and left corners of the screen. They are caused by misaligned LEDs.
