External Monitor Flashing to Black

PowerBook G4 15" 1.67 GHz with 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM running OS X10.4.11.
I'm attaching a Samsung SyncMaster 205BW using DVI cable that came with monitor. My Mac is recognizing this as a SyncMaster and I am using the display settings it defaulted to. I am using the notebook's built-in screen at same time as the SyncMaster (not mirroring). In the displays preference pane I have the monitors arranged with the SyncMaster above the notebook's display. The menu bar is at the top of the SyncMaster and the dock is at the bottom of the notebook display.
For some reason, after a few minutes of use the SyncMaster will start flashing to a black (blank?) screen as if it is not receiving a signal. It will then come back after about a second. Once it starts, the problem becomes more and more frequent as I use the monitor. However; if I unplug the DVI cord from the PowerBook and wait for the built-in screen to reset, then plug the DVI cord back into the Mac, the problem will go away again for several minutes.
I have not been able to duplicate any particular action or application that triggers this.
Any and all suggestions for fixing this are appreciated!

Hi DJ
I had a similar problem with my acer display, it showed up, that it lost synchronization of the refresh rate somehow sometimes. For me the fix was to download [SwitchRes|http://www.switchres.info/html/SRX/DL.shtml], setting some different vertical refresh rates (from 60Hz to 68Hz) there, restarting the Book and then selecting 62Hz within the SysPrefs/Displays window. The nominal refresh rate of my display is 60Hz but this ended with a total blackout, it works steady with 62Hz. After this procedure I could delete SwitchRes and ApplicationEnhancer that came with it, the custom refresh rates remained. Be aware that ApplicationEnhancer caused some troubles with OSX 10.5.
Good Luck P

  • My secondary monitor flashes and blacks out after the 10.7 install.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have installed 10.7 and the secondary monitor flashes and blacks out.  I downgraded back to 10.6 and the problem went away.  I reinstalled 10.7 and the same problem happened again.  The monitor blacks in and out especially when the pointer is placed in the dock area, but it still happens all the time.  My secondary monitor is a ViewSonic 22 inch that is connected to a DVI to display adapter.  Any solutions??
    Thanks

Talked to AppleCare and it's most likely the fact that my MacBook has 3.0 USB ports and my non official charging cable can't support that. So yeah, I'll try a new cable, hopefully that's the fix.

  • External Monitor Shows Only Black Screen ??

Recently, my PowerBook G4 12" stopped working properly with my external monitor. My external monitor is a Dell 2005FPW that is connected to my laptop via a mini-DVI adapter, a VGA cable to the VGA port on the 2005FPW. When connected to the laptop, the 2005FPW goes black; otherwise, the monitor shows it's "rest" screen which is a bouncing color bar.
This system has worked without problems for years. I changed nothing in the configuration and (possible red herring) the only "event" prior to the problem developing was that I installed the "Security Update 2008-005 (PowerPC) v 1.0".
I have confirmed that the monitor and VGA cable are working with my wife's laptop.
Today, I replaced the mini-DVI to VGA adapter, and the problem hasn't gone away.
    Any suggestions?

  • External monitor flashes when scrolling large Photoshop images

    Hello,
My external monitor is flashing when I scroll around large Photoshop files. I'm assuming it the graphics processor switching modes. I've got a brand new Macbook Pro 2.66 i7 17" computer and am using a 23" Cinema HD Display (clear bezel) with the Apple ADC to DVI adapter.
How can I get this to stop?
    Thanks for the help,
    Cyril

According to Apple with an external monitor connected only the nvidia card is used. So it's not changing graphics cards. I would think it's more a driver issue or the usual blinking screen fault of nvidia (timing issue). Send in a report to Apple describing the fault.
One other thing to check is your cables, from what i gather from your post you have a chain adc-dvi-mdp rattle them, and clean them with spray to take away oxides.

  • External monitor resultion problem: black borders

I use a Hanns-G HW191D 19" external flatscreen with my Macbook. It is a wide screen with 1440x900. The problem is that I cannot use all of that space when I'm in the Mac OS. I can use it (to the edges of the screen) when I use Boot Camp in Windows XP with the same Macbook.
When I'm in the Mac OS (which is about 99.9999% of the time of course), I have about about an inch of black border all the way around my desktop -- as if it cannot scale up to the full size of the screen.
In my system prefs, I have my Displays set to:
    1440 x 900
    Millions of colors
    60 Hertz
I'm connecting via the VGA connector (since that's all I have to work with).
The monitor itself has some onscreen controls, but nothing that can make the image bigger.
Okay one other thing, I got this Macbook a long time ago -- almost two years. I got the external monitor for it about a year and a half ago. This problem existed from the first time I connected the monitor -- I tried to figure it out but couldn't and didn't think to try this forum. So I've been living with it since then (ug).

  • PB G4 1GHz - External Monitor flashing but eventually works

Something weird is going on with my Powerbook when I connect it to an external monitor.
When I plug in the monitor the Powerbook will detect the external display, but the external monitor will flash on and off, intermittently displaying the screen, but then cutting out.
With enough switching between mirrored and extended mode, the monitor will external will eventually work and the image will stay put. But if the computer goes to sleep, the whole thing happens again.
Is this just my video card acting up (no solution possible) or are there monitor 'drivers' out there?
    Thanks!

Check if the connections are loose or get a new cable.
Do you use DVI-D (Stable) or VGA (Don't know) or VGA w/VGA to DVI-D transformer(Unstable: I use it for connecting my TV to my PowerBook)

  • W530, External monitor flashes on OpenGL

I have a Lenovo W530, which I'm using with an external ASUS monitor connected via HDMI. When I launch an application that uses OpenGL, all of my screens flicker off and on multiple times for about 2 or 3 seconds all told, and then finally stop flashing and then it works. However, I would prefer that it did not do this, because it is very annoying.
Without the 2nd display connected, the laptop screen works fine and doesn't flash. If I connect a different 2nd ASUS monitor via VGA cable, it also works fine.
I did not have this problem until upgrading video drivers recently to deal with another unrelated issue (a different piece of software required updated NVidia drivers).
    Any ideas?

    Hi Paul930,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are issue with external monitor on your ThinkPad W530.
I suggest you to uninstall the current graphic drivers of both Nvidia & Intel, download latest version from the support site and install it.
    Hope this helps.

  • External monitor flashes on and off randomly after wake from sleep

I have a Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz hooked up to a Samsung SyncMaster 2033 External monitor via the MiniDisplayPort-DVI connector.
After waking from sleep, the external monitor will go blank for a fraction of a second at random intervals (display on the MBP remains normal). The flickering clusters are about minutes apart, while flickers within a cluster (usually 2-3 flickers per cluster) is of order seconds apart. "Detect displays" will not make this go away. The only way I can make it go back to normal is to unplug-and re-plug the MiniDisplayPort connector on the MBP.
Anyone else got a more elegant solution to this that does not involved wearing down the displayport?

I tried this.  No change.  However, I did start playing with the Display settings.  Oddly enough, when I change the disfunctioning monitor to 720p it starts working again.  Does this mean anything to anyone?

  • My external monitor flashes random colors after waking up from sleep?

Whenever I wake up my Mac Mini, the monitor flashes thru many different colors..... red, blue, greeen..... maybe some other ones. Sometimes it does this for a few seconds and then gets to the log in screeen and sometimes it does if for 30 seconds or longer. I have a Samsung Monitor hooked up via HDMI cable. I have had this computer for close to a year and it only started doing this over the last month. Once I can log in I don't seem to have any performance issues, I'm just woried it will get worse over time..... Maybe never stop flashing.

Hi, installed any software/updates in the last month?
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • Macbook Pro and External Monitor flashing?

I am using a Macbook Pro with an External Dell 1908fp 19" monitor via a Thunderbolt to DVI adaptor all fine.
However the annoying niggle I have is that the monitor which seems fine, keeps flashing intermittently on and off randomly?!?
Would anyone know why this is happening and if its the Mac's fault? I have the MBP open and the Monitor as the 2nd screen at 1440x900 which it seems to have defaulted to, and its very clear on both screens.
Is my monitor on its way out? it seems ok, and is quite new (though it was 2nd hand a couple of years ago) or is this a known Apple issue?
    Thanks for any help

The graphics card in the MBP supports resolutions far greater than that of the internal display, so any modern monitor will work fine - up to and including Apple's excellent (but pricey) Thunderbolt display and Cinema display.
The MBP will detect the external display and set the image to the correct resolution automatically, or you can choose the resolution in System Preferences -> Displays, so you don't need to worry about a black border.
Most modern monitors are 1080p and this works perfectly as an external display for a MBP.  You will need a mini-displayport to HDMI cable to connect the two.  If you get a monitor with built in speakers then that cable will also transfer audio.

  • External Monitor not seen by MacBook

When I switched on my MacBook Pro this morning I forgot to use the power cable and my battery was flat.
My external monitor flashed up briefly and then disappeared.
Now my MacBook cannot see my external monitor at all.
    Can anybody please help?

      Bit embarrassing...
The MDP to VGA Adapter had died...
I'm back on two screens now.

  • IMac 27" flashes to white on startup, chimes, then goes to a black screen. It works fine on an external monitor. Any ideas how I can fix this?

I've got a late 2009 iMac 27". When I start it up, it chimes and makes all the normal sounds. The screen flashes white for 2 seconds, then goes black. The iMac starts up (if I use an external monitor, it works fine) but the screen remains black.
Weirdly, if I start it up on Bootcamp as a Windows machine, it flashes white, then flashes briefly a few seconds later on the Windows logo, then goes to black.
I've reformatted the hard drive and performed a clean install of Lion. I've got some Apple knowledge, so I've taken the front bezel off and checked for loose connections. Everything appears fine. All 4 diagnostic lights are on on the logic board.
I'm stumped. I don't want to splash out on a new LCD screen if it's the inverter or something else that's the problem
    Any ideas welcome!

Ah. I'm not able to run the hardware test because it only works on the main screen. There's no obvious way to switch to an external monitor when AHT is running, which is ridiculous if the hardware fault concerns the screen! The problem isn't with the backlight - there is no dimmed image on the screen, it is just off.
I'll just have to use it with an external monitor, I guess - which defeats the purpose of buying an iMac!
    Thanks for your help, though.

  • External monitor goes black when macbook pro has magsafe connected

    Hi,
I have bought an external monitor about 1 week ago, and I have it connected with a minidisplay to dvi cable, and a dvi cable to the monitor.
It was working OK -well, it had some sudden flash to black screen that lasted about 1 second, but nothing else- until thir morning when it just started showing a black screen. Mac OS sees the monitor, and I can move windows over there, etc. It's "alive". But I only see a black screen on the monitor.
I tested with other computer, and it works OK. The cables work too.
What I discovered is that if I unplug the power adaptor from the MBP the monitor screen shows correctly.
It works OK only if the magsafe adaptor is unplugged from the MBP, it doesn't care if the magsafe adaptor is plugged to the power or not; only if it's connected to the mac book pro.
It seems like some magnet stuff is making a mess there. What could it be? I can't work on the monitor only in battery power...
I tried resetting nvram and the other stuffs that I found here, but nothing works.
    Thanks!
