External Monitor on Powerbook with no display

Alright, so here's the deal...I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium 15 inch, on which the internal display has since died. I removed the display completely and purchased an external display which has worked fine with current OS. But, I have decided to erase the disk and use Linux primarily while partitioning a small amount of space to retain Mac OS 10.4. But, after erasing the disk using the original Mac OS X 10.1 restore disc, all installer startup discs including the Software Restore, Mac 10.4, and Linux will not appear at startup, only the Mac OS x 10.1. I assume this is because the startup disk does not recognize the external monitor and assumes it is running the program on an internal display which is not there. Is there anyway I can permanently erase the internal display options, to in effect make the Powerbook act like a desktop or tower with regards to the external display? Thanks.

If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display if you have the Early 2006 model 1,1 MacBook or the Late 2006 & Mid 2007 model 2,1 MacBooks.
From the Mid 2007 MacBook User Guide: F7 (video mode toggle key) Switch between dual-display mode (extending the desktop across the built-in display and an external display) and video-mirroring mode (presenting the same information on both displays).
This won't work on the newer MacBooks.

  • Macbook pro(2008 later) can not recognise external monitor(NEC UXI2090) with mini-DP to DVI adapter with 9600GT

I bought mini-DP to DVI frome Apple several monthes ago and it worked well in that time until yesterday the external monitor show me no signal sign. Other PCs were connected with the same cable and monitor and they are fine. I am wondering there is something wrong in the adaptor or macbook pro. Furthermore I found the external monitor can display nornally when I switched to 9400 graphic card and used mini-DP to VGA adapter. If I switch to 9600GT no signal again. If I switch 9400 using mini-DVI, it is shown on the external screening: Out of range... In a word, In the mode of 9600GT, mac can not recognise external monitor(I can not detect it in the systerm preference even I press detect display buttun) and 9400 works in VGA mode. However when I connect adapter to mac, the screen showed blue flash.
I reseted SMC, no use; I created a new account or enter mac to safe mode, no use; so far I did not reseted PRAM beacuse of something wrong of my system. I am downlaoding Mountain Lion OS and will install it. Then I will reset PRAM and try again.
I do not know whether I shoud change the adapter or the single-link DVI cable to dual-link. Someone said it is useful in their condition. I tried some methods from BBS, such as connected when devices were off and then open, and so on. I failed.
    Any suggestion for this problem?
    Addition: OS: 10.7.4(Lion)

I turns out that the logic board of my MacBook Pro was faulty (despite being brand new).
I took it to the Apple Store, presented the problem, and one of the Tech's came to the same conclusion that I had -- hardware failure.  Phone support was no help in the matter (and even told me that what I was trying to do wasn't a supported option, which is rediculous).  However, the Genius Bar did take care of the problem, and my MacBook Pro was back to me with a replaced logic board within a few days.
    Hope that htis helps.

  • Recommendations for external monitor in combination with USB 3.0 dock and X1 carbon touch

    Dear Community,
I'm waiting for my X1 carbon touch and USB 3.0 dock and keyboard/mouse to arrive any time soon. However, I'd be glad to get some help/recommendations on external monitor choice.
For instance, the new HP envy 27" caught my eye, since it includes speakers, but it comes with HDMI and Displayport connections only. As far as I understood, video connection itselft shouldn't be a problem using a DVI to HDMI adaptor, but how about the resolution of the X1 vs. a HD+ monitor, and how do I use the audio on this monitor (don't want to use the microphone jack in front of the dock, as it should look as minimalistic as possible)?
Is there a solution? via usb 3.0? or should I better consider another monitor? Anyways, DVI or HDMI, I don't want to connect a separate audio system to the dock. Any recommendations, or is it one of those gadgets that  has not been thought through well enough and you need to wait for the next generation to be developed?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Cheers, jcd

Since you don't want to use the jack on the dock, you could usethemini-DisplayPortontheX1cTouchasyourvideooutputoption because the version of DP on the X1c Touch includes the ability for audio to streamed over the DP connection in addition to video. This would require a compatible DP monitor.
You'll also want the monitor to support audio over the DP connection. The X1c Touch's graphics supports the output of an audio stream over DP and the machine should be be capable of this. This gives you two cables connecting to the X1c Touch -- the DP cable for audio and video and the USB 3.0 cable connecting to the dock. The dock would be attached to keyboard, mouse, USB accessories, and Ethernet (if necessary).
As far as what to look for in a monitor, my general recommendation is Dell Ultrasharp. They tend to be a good deal for an IPS monitor with at least an sRGB gamut and a solid warranty. I've never bothered to attempt to stream audio over DP because I have separate speakers for audio. In the same way that my last 3 laptops have been ThinkPads, my last three monitors have been Dell Ultrasharps. The graphics in the X1c Touch should be fine running a 1920x1080, so I wouldn't worry about resolution. It can be a little jarring to use monitors side-by-side when they have different pixel densities, so you'll likely end up treating them as separate display surfaces. I often have e-mail and Pandora open on my T420's screen while I'm doing the bulk of my work on my main monitors. If you think you'll be touching the screen a good bit, then you might want to look into buying a touch capable monitor. Otherwise your brain can become easily confused because it'll begin to think that all computer screens are touch-capable and you'll reach out and try to touch your desktop monitor without thinking.

  • External monitor resolution problems with Mountain Lion

I have a problem with my external monitor (Samsung LS19B150NS) and Mountain Lion (running on unibody Mac Mini). Each time I reboot OSX the resolution get reset from native 1366 x 768 to something lower. The display is connected via DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. Some observations:
    - I tried selecting "Best for..." option or "Scaled" (set on 1366 x 768 or 1360 x 768). The problem is still there
    - Sometimes resoltuion might stay alright for several reboots, but then the problem re-appears again
    - Sleep mode doesn't reset resolution
    - Other monitors work fine via the same adapter
    - The Samsung LS19B150NS work perfectly well with other Win PCs
Any suggestions how to fix it?

  • External Monitors on Powerbook

Ok, someone else has to have experienced something similar to my occurrance with an external monitor after upgrading to 10.4.3. I am guessing by a total lack of response to my question posted yesterday that everyone is about as clueless as I am.
Is there anyone else experiencing problems with external monitors as I am after an upgrade to 10.4.3 or I am the only lonely one with the world's most obscure problem?
    M

Too late to edit my own post, so here's a followup:
I found the post you reference. There's actually 2 of them:

I always use my external monitor with the powerbook closed. What's different between my usage pattern and yours is I don't have the option to rotate my monitor to portrait.
What process do you use when attaching the portrait monitor?
Here's my process when I come in to work in the morning:
    Powerbook is sleeping, closed.
I attach the DVI adaptor (that's already connected to the monitor).
I attach the USB cable that goes to my keyboard and mouse.
    I attach the power cord.
If my powerbook hasn't already woken up, I hit the space bar.
It sounds like this is specifically related to your use of your monitor in portrait mode, though I don't pretend to know why that would make a difference.

  • Getting an Acer external monitor to work with a MacBook Pro

I just made the switch from PC to Mac and while I'm excited I'm having a few growing pains. Here's one thing I'm trying to figure out.
Both at home and at the office I have external monitors configured. These worked well with the PC but I having some problems with the Mac. I get the screens to work together fine (i.e. I can drag things from the laptop screen to the external monitor). However, the resolution on the external monitor is grainy. I've tried all the resolution setting and can't get it to work any better.
The Mac is a MacBook Pro with a 15.4" screen and the external monitor is an Acer AL2216Wbd.

    two possibilities>
    1. you're using analog cable to connect to external display (via dvi to vga adapter-but that is not the case obviously, because otherwise you could set the ref. rate for 60 or 75Hz - now its greyed out) anyway, when I used this set up, I noticed huge degradation of displaying quality. kinda washed out and blurred. but not grain at all
    2. but what is more presumable in your case, you're using photo background provided by apple...these pictures are grainy by themselve. and when you extend your desktop from 15" to 20" it's clear that you notice it, all the more, if the external is not widescreen, therefore background image has to be stretched and cropped even more, therefore the grain is even bigger. This is my personal experience.
try to test it. put to the background for example some gradient made especially for that purpose in ill or ps. make two versions for both screens.
    thats all
    good luck

  • Working Flex 2-14 with external monitor an keyboard with closed lid

Hi everybody, at home I have an USB-3-Hub for my Flex 2-14 where LAN, external Monitor, external Keyboard, Mouse, Sound, BlueRay and so on is plugged in. So the main time I use the Flex 2-14 at my Desk at Home with this usb-hub like a docking station.  The main difference to a real docking station is, that I have to open the lid everytime to push the power button. When running, I configured Windows 8.1 in the way, that I can close the lid without consequences, but I search for a way to turn in on without opening the lid before. Also wake on Keyboard or even wake on mouse could be an alternative, but I also didn't find a way to aktivate that (neither in the bios, nor in Windows 8.1). An other alternative may be to turn it on because of opening the lid (because in Windows there ist is possibility to shut it down when closing it, so truning it on and off without pressing any button may be another possibility, but I also didnt find a soultion for that. Somebody out there who can help me? Thnx!

    Update:
It seems that the latest version of OS-XLion (10.7.2) now prevents the use of portable computers (such as my MacBookpro) in a vertical docking station such as the Henge Docks unit I have beenusing for the past few months.
To operate the MBP in ‘clamshell mode’ nowrequires the external monitor, wired keyboard, and mouse to be connected before the computer is closed, otherwise it will not recognize the external monitor etc.:
This means that it cannot be closed theninserted into the dock, then be expected to work with an external display…
I contacted Apple support about this, the person I spoke with seemedknowledgeable enough and agreed that apparently the only way around this wouldbe to reverse the OS updates, which I do not want to do either. They suggestedI send feedback via the Apple website, which I have done.
Any other Henge Docks users out there experiencing the same issue?

  • External Monitor Stopped Working with OSX but fine with XP

I have a viewsonic Monitor that im connecting to mbp via hdmi-dvi.
It has been working fine for the last 9-10months but has all of a sudden just stopped being detected.
If i Boot up in windows i have no problems as the monitor is detected fine, but with OSX 10.5.8 all i get is the Grey/blue screen change on the mbp when its connected to mbp or when monitor powered on or off.
There is no change to external monitor though.
I have tryed resetting the PRAM
when i go into sys pref/display, it does not detect a second monitor
I have been looking around for a few hrs now with no luck, any help would be great

Have tryed having monitor unpluged for a whole day and that didnt work, cant see any reset button on monitor.
tryed resent PRAM and PMU, tryed booting in safe mode, tryed booting from OSX disc
    but didnt quite understand :
"If you see video when started up from disc, you may have corrupted software. You can use the Archive and Install feature of the Mac OS X installer to reinstall. This kind of installation gives you a fresh version of Mac OS X, but you don't lose any data from the computer as your old information is all archived."
it just booted up and asked if i wanted to install another copy of OSX.
only thing i havnt tryed from the above help is the rm command part of the out of range mac mini, and im a little cautions about that
-i can still use it fine via bootcamp, i just have to go into video settings and tell it to use dual monitors, is there anything like that on osx ? only thing i can find is the display button in sys pref and that only gives me the option to detect displays which it dont do very well.
    Thanks

  • How do I set external monitor to work with my G4 iMac?

I just bought a 22" Proview LCD monitor to use with my iMac b/c it's monitor is pretty much gone. It did not work for six months, then came on for 1 day and went out again.
Long story short, since I've hooked up the new monitor when I print in iPhoto the pictures come out too dark and the color is not what it used to be.
How do I fix it so my monitor's calibrations match the original? Or, whatever I need to do to fix it.
I print a lot of pictures and I need this to work correctly.
    Thanks.

Snoot, welcome, your new monitor just needs to be calibrated. From the finder under the Apple scroll down to System Preferences, Click the Desktop & Screen Saver icon and set the desktop picture to a Medium Gray.. You can change this back when you are done. Now go back by clicking Show All and click the Displays icon, then choose Display in the upper tabs and set your preferred resolution. Set your monitor brightness at about medium (if there is one) and at Colors choose Millions. Now choose Color from the upper tab and select Calibrate. Choose Expert Mode at the introduction and follow the on screen instructions. After making all of the Hue,Value and Saturation adjustments your must save the setting back to the Display profile.
Also some applications have monitor selection in there preferences, so just make sure that you choose your present Display Profile for that particular application.

I cannot reset the SMC by removing the battery, I do not have the confidence to remove my battery, and do not have the time to send the computer to someone else to do it.
I also tried updating my OS from 10.7.4 (Might've been 10.7.3) to 10.7.5.
My computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010), running OS X 10.7.5 Lion.

  • CS6 - no external monitoring of Program with AJA Kona

I guess this is still unsupported by AJA, since they don't have the Adobe AJA plugs updated for CS6 on their site as of an hour ago.
BUT... I copied the AJA folder from my Library>ApplicationSupport>Adobe>Plug-ins>Common>MediaCore>CS5.5 folder into the one for CS6.
AJA shows up in the Preferences>Playback>Default Player option.  I can get full-screen external monitoring through the Kona in the Source window, and also with the Hover Scrub.  Just nothing in the Program, which means I can't get CUDA external full-screen playback... yet.
So... has anybody figured a workaround to get playback on a Kona with Pr CS6?
Mac 10.6.8, latest drivers, etc. Kona LHi

Well, at this point, the driver for Kona is available, and the bad, bad, news is that it's indeed Lion only.
This is the ONLY reason I have for upgrading to Lion.  Every other piece of software I own is running just fine on 10.6.8.  This includes Media Composer 6.
I've got a test partition on which I have Lion installed, and it's a freaking nightmare.  I've spent almost three days reinstalling software, drivers, plug-ins, with days to go before I get it all done (I have over 5000 fonts, 3/4 of which weren't recognized by FontExplorerX, forcing me to reinstall and recategorize them.).
This is the most painful "upgrade" in my history with Mac, which goes back to System 4 or 5.
I HATE the new auto-correct feature, the security measures that think I'm not an Admin when I am, and the fact it just seems a lot slower than Snow Leopard.  Two of the Zaxwerks plugs for Ae are a hundred times slower.
I'm starting to hate Apple.  And I'm going to start hating AJA too, if they don't come up with an Adobe driver for 10.6.8.
Sorry, I'm venting.  The last three days have been hell.

  • Satellite U305: cannot watch videos on external monitor running Vista with Dynadock

    Hi Fellows,
I have one Satellite U305 running Windows Vista, I bought also one Dynadock VGA with external HP 20" monitor.
I have uppdated all Dynadock drives (Audio, Video, etc) to the latest version, but DVD Video or MPEG Video recorded with my camera is no possible to watch on extended monitor only in the primary monitor (notebook monitor).
For exemple my Toshiba DVD Player works normally on Notebook monitor but when I transfer the window to extended monitor, Toshiba DVD Player stops to work.
Video doesnt work on extended monitor.
Is it correct or Do I made something wrong configuration? Is it a bug? If it is a bug, how to solve this bug?
I am worry because I bough a big external monitor to watch some movies that I can not watch it.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
    Nilton

I am sorry that I have to tell you that mate, but it wont be possible to watch any kind of realtime content through your dynadock. It is not designed for that.
The USB-Connection has not enough bandwidth to transfer this amount of data that is needed to have a "real" dvi / vga picture on our monitor. It is just made for Office use, e.g. E-Mail, Word etc.
If you can, bring it back and look for another solution...
