  • Strange issue with external monitor, only working when external speakers plugged in (using Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor)

Hey – I am having a very strange issue with my external monitor; where it only works if my external speakers are plugged in and connected.
I am using a late 2011 Macbook pro, running Mavericks 10.9.4, along with an MBox 2 (USB Audio Interface), and two powered speakers (KRK Rokit 5). This setup has had no issues. I have just acquired an external monitor (Benq T2200HD), which I am using with a thunderbolt to VGA adaptor (a cheap Chinese knockoff adaptor).
To start - I plugged the monitor in with the thunderbolt adaptor, and it powers up and works fine. However, there is a nasty buzz coming from the speakers. I did some research and it looks like a simple ground loop issue. I did a bit of troubleshooting, and this is where things get weird.
What I found is - If I unplug the MBox, the monitor loses signal from the computer (displaying ‘No Signal Detected!’). Further, if I keep the MBox plugged in, however unplug both the cables from the MBox to the speakers, the monitor loses signal. It doesn’t matter if the speakers are turned off, however they need to be plugged in (or the monitor loses signal). Weirder still, I can unplug the MBox, however the monitor will work if I plug in the speakers through my macs headphone jack.
Simply put, the monitor only works if there is a direct connection between the computer, the speakers, and the power source.  What is going on here? Is the monitor grounding through the computer port, to the speakers (I don’t know how this works, is this possible?). Could it somehow be the cheap VGA adaptor I am using?
    Some other information:
    - Everything is plugged into the same multi-box for power. I have tried plugging things into separate sources, and the result is the same.
    - If I unplug the thunderbolt adaptor, then the speaker noise disappears straight away.
    - The ground noise doesn’t appear in my headphones, which are plugged into the MBox.
Any information would be great – am I missing something here, or is this genuinely weird?

Well, I went back into Best Buy to test on 3 other laptops (2 Asus, and their floor model for this Sony). It seems to be doing the same problem so at least I was able to rule out broken hardware issue on my particular laptop.
Here's what I did to test:
Since I couldn't really install Adobe Premiere on their machines, I used the DVIO software (http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm) and a 5 min clip I captured.  I transferred onto their machines, hooked up my Sony D8, and attempted to play the video.  It would play for 15 seconds and then stop and jitter with a loud noise (like it does on my laptop).  I even tried changing each machine's firewire driver to the legacy one and same results.  I pulled a brand new 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable off their shelf and still the same problem.
I think I've nailed it down to Win7x64 bit Home Edition not playing nice with Firewire driver.  Very annoying.  I can't find any concrete evidence of this from other users on any of the forums that have my particular problem, but from my own testing, it's all I can conclude.
I have 2 other things I can try:
    1.  Opening the laptop and looking at the firewire to maybe find appropriate driver (ugh, I don't want to have to open this thing up).
    2.  Upgrading to Win7x64bit Pro and possibly testing with XP on the new MS Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/).  I can't do it with my Home edition apparantly.
Who needs to view video on an external TV anyways....sheeesh...(scarcasm).

  • External Monitor not working with U430P

I have a U430P laptop and a Dell U2412M external monitor.  Both have worked great together until yesterday, all of a sudden my external monitor won't work, the screen is black and my laptop doesn't recognize the device.  I have tested the monitor on another laptop and it works fine.  I have tested my cord on another system and it too works fine.  What is wrong with my U430P?  This laptop is only 5 months old!  Thank you.

  • External Monitor Stopped Working with OSX but fine with XP

I have a viewsonic Monitor that im connecting to mbp via hdmi-dvi.
It has been working fine for the last 9-10months but has all of a sudden just stopped being detected.
If i Boot up in windows i have no problems as the monitor is detected fine, but with OSX 10.5.8 all i get is the Grey/blue screen change on the mbp when its connected to mbp or when monitor powered on or off.
There is no change to external monitor though.
I have tryed resetting the PRAM
when i go into sys pref/display, it does not detect a second monitor
I have been looking around for a few hrs now with no luck, any help would be great

Have tryed having monitor unpluged for a whole day and that didnt work, cant see any reset button on monitor.
tryed resent PRAM and PMU, tryed booting in safe mode, tryed booting from OSX disc
    but didnt quite understand :
"If you see video when started up from disc, you may have corrupted software. You can use the Archive and Install feature of the Mac OS X installer to reinstall. This kind of installation gives you a fresh version of Mac OS X, but you don't lose any data from the computer as your old information is all archived."
it just booted up and asked if i wanted to install another copy of OSX.
only thing i havnt tryed from the above help is the rm command part of the out of range mac mini, and im a little cautions about that
-i can still use it fine via bootcamp, i just have to go into video settings and tell it to use dual monitors, is there anything like that on osx ? only thing i can find is the display button in sys pref and that only gives me the option to detect displays which it dont do very well.
    Thanks

  • External display only works with bootcamp

Ok, so I am not by any means bad with computers, in fact I am quite good with them.  I have quite a bit of experience and can usually sort just about any problems I have out myself but this is just getting really annoying.  I have a 2011 13 inch macbook pro, and a SyncMaster BX2335 monitor.  I bought a miniDP to hdmi adapter when i bought the computer, and it worked great to display on my tv, however when I connect my hdmi to dvi cable up to the mbp, so that I can use my monitor, their is no picture and the monitor sketches out a bit, displaying random error messages.  At first I thought that my hdmi to dvi cable was just to old to work with the mDP to hdmi adapter. However, for an unrelated reason I had to install windows under bootcamp today, and I noticed that the external monitor works.  For some reason the exact same setup that I am trying to use under OSX which I greatly prefer, mDP->HDMI->DVI, only works under my bootcamp partition...I can not figure out why.  The only thing that happens under osx is that the monitor is recognized, but no amount of tweaking resolutions or settings was able to get anything to display.
Oh and I have 10.6.7 installed, which was supposed to fix display issues.

Tabudrummer, just thought I'd give you a tip. I've been reading around the web and it seems like the 13" has a problem with the mDP->hdmi->DVI setup (I've got it set up the same way). Seems like OS X doesn't like it . I hope to get hold of a mDP-DVI cable in the next few days and see if it helps. Will report to you

  • External Monitor Not Working With Macbook Pro

My computer was working fine with an external monitor, then my computer froze, and I had to hold down the power button. When I turned it back on, my computer would not work with an external monitor. I've tried different cables, so it's not the cable. The monitor is being detected by the computer, but nothing is showen on the external monitor. When connecting the monitor to the computer, the computer's screen goes blue, then turns back to normal. I
I cannot reset the SMC by removing the battery, I do not have the confidence to remove my battery, and do not have the time to send the computer to someone else to do it.
I also tried updating my OS from 10.7.4 (Might've been 10.7.3) to 10.7.5.
My computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010), running OS X 10.7.5 Lion.
I need to get this problem fixed ASAP, any help is appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Sergee237

I forgot to mention, I'm connecting the monitor via MiniDisplay -> HDMI. I've also tried USB -> HDMI and USB -> DVI -> HDMI but none of them seem to work.

  • Airdrop only works with Airdop window open

I have Airdop running on two computers. But it only works when both computers have the Airdop window open. That is stupid. When somebody wants to send you something he can't see your computer when the Airdop window is closed. If Apple means this as a "do not disturb function" it would be done better with a switch. I don't like to have windows open.
    Steffen

Sorry, but I have to agree with the OP. There should be a switch, and perhaps the default for that switch should be as you stated, however it would be great to have the option there.
And anyway, with file sharing on (like most Macs on my uni network have, see attached), you can put anything in their drop boxes at any time. Airdrop is a simplified version of this, so why not have an always on option as well?
Waiting for a clever person to come up with hack. Perhaps it drains battery life in terms of the ad hoc feature of Airdrop. I dunno.

  • HMDI Connected External Monitor only works mirrored

I've got a 27-inch iMac with the 2.93 Ghz Intel i7 (running Mac OS X 10.6.5) connected to a Hannspree HF289H 27.5in external monitor (1920x1200 resolution, connect via Mini Display to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable). It has worked fine for a few months, but all of sudden the 2nd monitor will just go black. When I restart the computer, the 2nd monitor will flash on and off and resize, but will not show anything once the computer fully comes up. If I go to the monitor settings and choose to "mirror" the display, it comes on and works. Then, if I take it off mirrored, it will work for a matter of minutes to hours, but eventually go black again.
Any thoughts? I've already tried resetting the SMC and restarting with a PRAM reset as mentioned in other posts.

Are you using the method in this Apple article? If you do, it should work.

  • Getting an Acer external monitor to work with a MacBook Pro

I just made the switch from PC to Mac and while I'm excited I'm having a few growing pains. Here's one thing I'm trying to figure out.
Both at home and at the office I have external monitors configured. These worked well with the PC but I having some problems with the Mac. I get the screens to work together fine (i.e. I can drag things from the laptop screen to the external monitor). However, the resolution on the external monitor is grainy. I've tried all the resolution setting and can't get it to work any better.
The Mac is a MacBook Pro with a 15.4" screen and the external monitor is an Acer AL2216Wbd.

    two possibilities>
    1. you're using analog cable to connect to external display (via dvi to vga adapter-but that is not the case obviously, because otherwise you could set the ref. rate for 60 or 75Hz - now its greyed out) anyway, when I used this set up, I noticed huge degradation of displaying quality. kinda washed out and blurred. but not grain at all
    2. but what is more presumable in your case, you're using photo background provided by apple...these pictures are grainy by themselve. and when you extend your desktop from 15" to 20" it's clear that you notice it, all the more, if the external is not widescreen, therefore background image has to be stretched and cropped even more, therefore the grain is even bigger. This is my personal experience.
try to test it. put to the background for example some gradient made especially for that purpose in ill or ps. make two versions for both screens.
    thats all
    good luck

  • How do I set external monitor to work with my G4 iMac?

I just bought a 22" Proview LCD monitor to use with my iMac b/c it's monitor is pretty much gone. It did not work for six months, then came on for 1 day and went out again.
Long story short, since I've hooked up the new monitor when I print in iPhoto the pictures come out too dark and the color is not what it used to be.
How do I fix it so my monitor's calibrations match the original? Or, whatever I need to do to fix it.
I print a lot of pictures and I need this to work correctly.
    Thanks.

Snoot, welcome, your new monitor just needs to be calibrated. From the finder under the Apple scroll down to System Preferences, Click the Desktop & Screen Saver icon and set the desktop picture to a Medium Gray.. You can change this back when you are done. Now go back by clicking Show All and click the Displays icon, then choose Display in the upper tabs and set your preferred resolution. Set your monitor brightness at about medium (if there is one) and at Colors choose Millions. Now choose Color from the upper tab and select Calibrate. Choose Expert Mode at the introduction and follow the on screen instructions. After making all of the Hue,Value and Saturation adjustments your must save the setting back to the Display profile.
Also some applications have monitor selection in there preferences, so just make sure that you choose your present Display Profile for that particular application.

  • External display only works with Macbook open?

I have an Acer AL2623W which works fine as an additional or main screen, but a second after you close the laptop the screen goes blank and it shows an 'input not supported' error. The Macbook stays on, it just doesn't drive the monitor alone. Re-open the Macbook and both work normally!

    Hello Siôn Dafydd,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are using an external display with your MacBook Pro and when you close the display on your MacBook Pro, the second display turns off. It sounds as though your MacBook Pro may not be connected to power while using with display closed. Please read over the attached article for information on using a second display in closed-clamshell mode.

  • Mail only works with Font Book open

I copied a lot of fonts to my laptop and all the fonts would show up on my desktop publisher. I did not want all the fonts enabled so I disabled the ones I didn't need. Later I noticed that I needed to enable essential fonts for my system, so I did that. BUT now when I start up my mail, it will start up slightly. It looks like it will start but I get the beach ball and it keeps turning and never starts up. The only way I can use my mail is to have the Font Book application opened. If I quit mail and start it up again, it will not work. I can only start up Mail, when I have Font Book up. If I quit Font Book, Mail mail continue to work. It's almost like it needs a jump start from Font Book...
How can I fix this? Is there a particular font that is needed for Mail? Maybe the list of essential system fonts I got was incorrect...

Sorry, but I have to agree with the OP. There should be a switch, and perhaps the default for that switch should be as you stated, however it would be great to have the option there.

  • Thinkpad T60p with Win XP - Lost color on external monitor (only black & white)

Hi, I have a ThinkPad T60P, and a couple of weeks ago, I lost color on my external monitor (connected by VGA cable)
I have done a lot of testing, and found a couple of strange things around this:
    *  when using docking station with two monitors, only monitor nr "1" inCatalyst Control Center shows colors, but not "2".
    * When using external monitor (or projector) I don't get color
    * When showing video on the external monitor, color works(!) This is only on some type of videos, I think. Flash videos (ie. YouTube does not show colors)
    * When getting a bluescreen, the external monitor displays bluescreen with colors. When rebooting after bluescreen, colors were working while booting (windows logo with colors), but as soon as XP was up, colors were gone(!)
    * I have tried updating to the latest graphics driver (79d533ww.exe), and all the settings in Catalyst Control Center /  Control Panel
As a result of these findings, I beleive it must be a software problem, but since upgrading the drivers didn't work, I don't know what to try next.
I see also that there are other people experiencing the same problems, but I can't find any solution to this problem.

Cats seem to have a strong affinity for that display mode — remarkably often we hear that they've typed in the correct keystroke combo for it, and yet they never seem to set it back to normal after using the computer. Not very considerate, but you know cats: consideration isn't part of the package.
