External tape drive DAT 72 problem

Hi all,
I have solaris 10 sparc running and working very well
but i have problem with external SCSI tape drive DAT 72 problem
it seems to me the tape drive is manufactured by SUN microsystems
when i ran ls -l /dev/rmt/0
it reveals the following output
bash-3.00#  mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status
/dev/rmt/0: No such file or directorywhen i ran ls -l
it reveals the following output
ls -l /dev/rmt/0
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          43 Sep 20  2006 /dev/rmt/0 -> ../../devices/pci@8,600000/scsi@1,1/st@3,0:it seems to me everything is okay
SCSI cable is connected properly to Tape device and to server as well
the tape has SCSI termination dongle as well and connected properly to Tape device as well
any ideas would be a great assist
Thanks in advance

first of all thanks for your reply
it's not newly installed and i'm not sure if it was working or not because i'm successor for an administrator who left job to new
by the way i rebooted to OBP multiple in hope that Solaris search for new peripherals and configure the one's it recognises.
times with no luck
anyways i ran prtconf bash-3.00# prtconf

Sending by Dropbox where, To who, to what computer? As your does not start up.
You need to take at least the OS disc to a work Mac computer and create DMG from the OS install disc then restore that DMG to USB thumb drive. Then you can boot the computer from that thumb drive and install the OS. That is if your hard drive is functioning correctly.
Then you can use the App disc in the external CD/DVD drive to load up all the included Applications that come with your version of OS X.

  • What external tape drives are compatible with sunblade 100s?

    hi,
    please, can anybody tell me:
    1. where i can find out whether or not a particular tape drive is compatible with my sunblade 100 workstation running solaris 9?
    2. do external tape drives usually connect to the workstation's serial port?
    3. what kind of specs/features should i be looking out for?
thanks in advance for your replies.

I would imagine you could use any tape drive with your sun blade... most are connected by either scsi or fiber channel... there could be some that are network controlled... not aware of any that are controlled by serial port...
GOOGLE is a wonderful thing... try it, you will like it...
compatibility is more concerned with which OS and program you want to use with the tape drive...
specs depend on what you are backing up... a single user would most likely only need a single drive... if you were a multi-national corp, then maybe you might contact Sun Sales...
maybe you should to some research yourself...

  • Using Time Machine to restore external hard drive data

I have been using a Mac Mini running 10.6.8 for years as a media server.  I have always been very careful to maintain backups of everything, and the inevitable did happen - the hard drive containing all my media did fail.
To clarify my set up, my Mac Mini internal hard drive is insufficient to store all my media, so I have been using an external 2TB drive to store it.  I then set up Time Machine to back up both the Mac Mini and the 2TB external drive to a second 3TB external drive.  Now that the 2TB drive with my media has failed, I seem to be having problems restoring all the media from 3TB drive.  This is because the Time Capsule interface is designed to display finder windows at various points in time so you can go back to when your missing files existed and restore them.  The problem is that I need the entire contents of the dead 2TB drive restored to a new drive, but I can't open a Time Capsule window that shows the contents of the old drive.  I have tried opening /Volumes in a finder window, then invoking Time Machine, but my dead hard drive does not show up in the list of volumes.  When I open the 3TB drive in a Finder window I can clearly see that it has backups of the 2TB drive, but they are spread out among 83 different snapshots of various dates.
How can I use Time Machine to easily restore the entire contents of the dead 2TB external drive to a new external drive?

This web site might answer all of your Time machine questions:

    Due to terminal commands?? :((
    Plz help :s

"How to install Snow Leopard from an External Hard Drive"
    * Launch Disk Utility
    * Select the External Firewire/USB device that you want to use as the boot drive for the upgrade
    * Click “Partition” from the menu options
    * Select 1 Partition, then click “Options” below the partition scheme
    * Select the top option for “GUID Partition Table” – it MUST be GUID to be bootable!
    * Click OK to create the GUID partition (this will reformat the drive, ie: all data is lost)
    * Next, click the “Restore” tab within Disk Utility
    * Select your newly made Snow Leopard 10.6 Install DVD image and restore this image to the GUID partition you just created OR…
    * Alternatively, you can select the Snow Leopard Install DVD and restore directly from the DVD to the GUID partition
    * After the restoration is complete, your GUID partition will now be bootable by Mac OS X!
    * Reboot the Mac holding down the “Option” key to pull up the boot loader, select the Snow Leopard install drive you just created rather than your default Mac OS hard drive
    * Install Snow Leopard as usual!
    Hope this helps!

  • External Hard Drive Data Recovery

    Hello Apple Support Communities!
I have a Western Digital 320GB external hard drive and it currently has 0 bytes available. This has prevented me from even viewing the hard drive on my finder window. I can only see it in disk utility. I have tried repairing the disk and verifying it but neither has worked in letting me view my files. I use the hard drive for movies and now i can't see them! Can anyone recommend free data recovery software so i can delete a few files so that i can view my hard drive? Thank you!

I found a way to sort of mount the drive and consequently do a data recovery.
What i did was highlight the 'iphone-dump.img' and opened it with 'Disk Utility'. Inside of 'Disk Utility', I double-clicked the 'iphone-dump.img' icon and low and behold, it split into two drives, despite it giving me an 'Unable to attach 'iphone-dump.img' (no mountable file systems)' message at the same time.
I wasn't able to do much with it in 'Disk Utility' from there on, so I opened 'Data Rescue III' and it became available to scan as a 'Virtual Interface' called 'Apple read:write'. I performed a scan and was able to locate my missing photos. It took a while because there were several duplicates of older photos. I think this is because each time I've restored the phone from a backup, data has been placed in a different location on the hard drive. Therefore, it has not overwritten these very same photos that have been on most of my backups for some time.
I wasn't able to find my missing voice memos from the 'QuickVoice' application though. They appear not to be there. I found the existing ones from the recovery. They must be somewhere surely? Maybe the photos are stored in a different way since the photo application is a default app and 'QuickVoice' is a bought app.   ?
    Ideas anyone

  • HELP!~  new mac user with MAJOR external hard drive/iTunes problems

    Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me out. I just got my new Powerbook Pro 2.0. It is really nice, but I am having a **** of a time with iTunes. I had an old Sony Viao and my friend turned me on to mac. So here I am, new computer and new 80G iPod. I have 120G of music on my external hard drive that played music right from the HD on my Vaio with no problems (until I upgraded to iT7.0, then the music ran choppy, but thats another issue). No, thinking that the Mac and iTunes will work perfectly together, I plugged in my External HD, turned on all the equipment, the mac finds the HD and I can see the music. Good. So, I change the location on the preferences to find the music on the ExHD and nothing. Then, I read all the forums and all and try EVERYTHING, moving the .xml file to the dektop, restarting iTunes, changing the location again, NOTHING works. I am about as frustrated as I can be. With over 26,000 songs that I cannot listen to.... I am about to regret this discision to get the mac. Any ideas? I also tried copy the files in the iTunes folder on the mac to the folder on the ExHD, but i don't know how on mac (there is no copy and paste command when you right click the mouse). I know my frustration is because I am new and dont know all the tricks yet.
I wish I could just call my buddy, but I am in Afghansitan fighting the taliban and he is in Hawaii. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks
MBP 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Brand New Mac user.......

Select your ext HD and do a key board command - CMD+I (Get Info - File Menu). Under the Ownership & Permissions tab - do you have read and write access? If not give yourself that access. You may be prompted for your admin password.
If your ext HD is the same one you used with the Vaio then I am thinking your ext HD is formated as a FAT32 and not a NTFS. Mac can read NTFS but not write to a NTFS format disk. If it is FAT32 then Mac can read and write. If it is a HFS+ format (Mac format) then there is no issue of read and write unless the disk is locked.
To copy files from one HD to anorther on a Mac - all you need to do is select and drag to the new location.
Check the Help Menu's of iTunes and the Finder. There is wealth of info built into your Mac OSX.

Is it possible to limit data access to one user via a password on the external hard drive plug into the USB port of a AirPort Extreme ?

    Yes

  • External Backup Drive & System Problems

    Here's my problem, somewhat complicated.
I have an older iMac (intel, 2008). Because of its age I need to back up the hard drive approximately once a day. I back it up using SuperDuper, which creates a bootable copy. (I don't use Time Machine, which I tried -- I like SuperDuper much better and I've been using it successfully across three computers, for years.)
The external hard drive is a LaCie Little Disk. It doesn't have its own power supply. It connects via FireWire. It also has a USB connection if more power is needed.
In the past I've had intermittent problems with the connection between the external hard drive and the computer. Sometimes the computer would not see the external hard drive, etc. The problems lessened when I replaced the firewire cable. I now have a couple different firewire cables, one with a converter from the old firewire to the new, one without. (The computer has two firewire ports, one old, one new.) I've swapped the cables now and then when I had problems.
I have a USB drawing tablet that I use once or twice a week. I only connect it when I'm using it.
Most of the time, when I use SuperDuper to back up the hard drive onto the external bootable backup, it works fine. But if I do the backup after I've used the tablet, I sometimes encounter a problem with the backup. SuperDuper stops in the middle of the backup and generates an error message. I asked SuperDuper support what causes this and they say it's probably hardware related. I think what happens is that the connection to the external drive gets compromised when I'm mucking around with the USB cables and such in the back of the computer.
Then what happens is that when I try to restart or shut down my computer, THAT doesn't work properly either. The shutdown stops midway and I have to use the power button to shut the computer down completely.
Then I start it up again, and recheck the firewire cable to the external drive, and the SuperDuper backup works fine.
Any tips on how to avoid the problems?
    Thanks.

Forgot to add: I'd also like to know WHY the problem with the external hard drive would lead to the shut down problem. Or -- what would normally cause the computer to not shut down completely?

How do i get it to backup again as I now have new movies and photo's i want to protect. It is plugged into the external HD and nothing is taking place and i cant find a command in time machine to tell it to perform another backup?
Thanks for any help in advance.

Try clicking and holding the TM icon in your Dock, then choose "BackUp Now".
Be sure in System Preferences >> Time Machine that it is turned "On".

  • Media on new external hard drive causing problems with FCP 4.1

    Hi gang
I bought a new 160 gig external hard drive due to my internal media drives becoming fairly full of media (20 gigs left on each). The external is being used only for media. I removed ownership permissions on all the media drives but now when I boot up the computer, the external won't show on the desktop (am using the encryption keys that came with the drive). If this is the case I can open any FCP project. If I can get the external drive up on the desktop (usually by switching the firewire port from back to front), then none of my FCP projects will open up (have to force quit due to "not responding"). This is drivng me nuts!!
    Any ideas ??
    thanks . . . .

Thanks for the replies. I bought the drive from an Apple reseller, told him it was for media storage and he sold me the drive with a Macally hardware encrypted "enclosure". I guess I could (or should have) increased the size of my three internal drives but will return this sucker as the replies I have received all indicate the encryption "feature" is one I don't need. Taking it back and thanks for the advice . . . as always this forum is extremely helpful !!

  • External hard drive compatibility problems

i've made the switch from being a long time windows user to the macbook pro. i can play all my files from my external hard drive, but for reason it is keeping me from being able to create new file folders on the external hard drive.

An alternative, if you don't wish to reformat the drive, or need to be able to use files larger than 4Gig on it, is to install third party software that lets your mac both read from and write to discs formatted in the "NTFS" scheme often used on big Windows drives. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ and http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/ provide a couple of examples.
If the drive is going to be used only on a mac in future, though, I'd personally be inclined to back it up and reformat with the Apple GUID partition Scheme and the HFS(+) partition scheme.

  • Western Digitial external USB drive recognition problem

    Hi
I recently bought a Western Digital USB 250gb external drive. I connected it to my G4 Powerbook running OSX10.2.8 and it had no problem recognising it. I then dumped across a load of data successfully.
A few days later I upgraded to Tiger and now the G4 won't recognise the external drive at all. I have scoured the forums for an answer but have found nothing to fix a drive problem where the drive just doesn't appear at all in disk utility (or on the desktop)!
I didn't partition the drive when it was first recognised in 10.2.8 (which i now realise was a mistake). The data on the external drive is unimportant to me - I just want to be able to use the drive - maybe there's a way or reformatting and starting again? (The Western Digital site doesn't provide any drivers for Tiger - cos it's just meant to recognise it automatically..)
    Any information appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Mark

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have any other USB devices connected to your Powerbook?
Is this a recognition problem right after the computer boots up? Or had the computer fallen to sleep prior to your connecting it? Sometimes I've seen USB ports fall into a low power mode causing problems recognizing USB devices until the machine is next rebooted.
If you have critical data on that drive, you may want to try Prosoft Data Rescue to see if it can see what is on that drive. You can also buy an external Firewire enclosure and try to move the drive to that, or find someone with a PowerMac G4 or G3 tower to see if it can be taken out of the case and put in the tower for recognition. If you do the latter, be sure that the jumper is set for the master/slave setting that matches the cable you are connecting in the drive.
