Extreme slowdown every 60 seconds

I have a 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 with 1 GB RAM and OS X 10.4.6. Up until yesterday afternoon it was running fine, but all of a sudden it started intermittently having glacial slowdowns.
It doesn't really matter what I have running. I could be just using the Finder, or I could have a dozen apps open and doing some heavy browsing in Safari or Firefox. But either way, the machine slows down to a grinding halt every minute or so. The mouse will respond only very jerkily, if I've given a Quit command the computer will hang in the process of quitting, if a dialog box was in the process of opening it will show on the screen half drawn, etc. These slowdowns last for maybe 10-15 seconds, and then everything is back to normal until the next slowdown.
I opened Activity Viewer in the background to see if I could find out what was going on. During the slowdowns, Activity Viewer will of course hang with everything else, but right as the slowdown finishes the process list will briefly show an application (usually the one in the foreground) using up almost 100%, or sometimes a lot more (it once showed Safari using 1,400% of the CPU).
I have 50+ GB free on my hard drive. I can't remember making any recent changes (large application installs, OS updates, etc.)
What's going on here?
Also, I forgot to add that these slowdowns USUALLY occur when I enter some sort of input (move the mouse, type something on the keyboard). If the computer is just sitting there with no input, it hums along happily.

Al's link to Dr. Smoke is good but what you can try right now is to restart the computer and hold down the shift key when you hear the bong. This will start you up in Safe Mode, you will know you are in that because it will say so on the opening screen. Then restart again and see if you still have the problem.
In safe mode Tiger deletes a number of font caches, if this is your problem it should be gone after starting up again. But if you've turned off any fonts in Font Book you will have to do so again.
Hopefully that will be a quick fix, if not read Dr. Smoke's FAQS. Actually, you should read them even if it does fix it because all that stuff is good to know.

  • Windows Explorer was crashing/restarting every few seconds and after trying several different methods of fixes, the only one that worked was removing Firefox, is there something I've missed that I can get Firefox back?

I'm running a Toshiba Satellite laptop that was originally running Windows Vista 32-bit, but was upgraded by me to Windows 7 32-bit. On Windows Vista, all I would run was Firefox. I loved it!!! On Windows 7, I've noticed that Firefox kept hanging whenever I would try to download a file...from anywhere. I got so frustrated I went to try several different browsers. They all worked extremely quickly, whereas Firefox was working so slow, I could click on a link to a page, go get some lunch, come back and it still be trying to load the page. This was drastically unusual for Firefox. I used the other browsers and everything was fine for a week and then Windows Explorer started going down every few seconds. I went to the windows 7 forums and started looking. There were several suggestions on how to fix the problem, none of which worked for my compy. I tried restarting the compy in safe mode. That didn't help. I turned off every startup program except for the essentials and that DID work in keeping Windows Explorer from restarting. I then dove into the tedious task of trying to discern which 3rd party program was the offender. I removed everything from my compy that had been downloaded in the last ten days (well before the windows explorer issue, but not before the firefox issue). That didn't work either. I tried replacing an explorer file, which didn't work either. There were several other things I tried, as well, but nothing worked. Then, I saw a post that Firefox had caused the problem for one person. I went in and did as was suggested and completely removed Firefox and all associated files. Unfortunately, this worked. I haven't had any more trouble with windows explorer restarting. My big problem is, however, I can't run Firefox!!! And I LOVE Firefox!!! It's spoiled me! I hate Internet explorer, which is what I'm forced to run now. I've tried Safari and Google Chrome and don't like either one of those, either. I want my Firefox back! But if it's not working 100% it's less frustrating to be forced to live with the Internet Explorer. I'm going insane, here! Does anyone have any suggestions? I tried clearing out browser history, changing download files and a couple of other things and nothing worked with the Firefox to get it going better before I started having the Windows Explorer difficulty and had to completely erase the Firefox program. If I've missed any info, please don't hesitate to ask!! I'm happy to supply whatever I know about the issue!!

uninstalled firefox ....deleted all files still remaining under mozilla firefox directory in program files ... to avoid having to reprogram all my settings, reisntall all addons as well .. I did not remove anything from mozilla firefox that is stored in either appdata or under the windows users directory (if any)
... the as suggested reinstalled the latest version of the firefox browser using the link you provided in the email ..; tested and several issues still remain present and unresolved ....
so please this is urgent or I will have to jump browsers and start using chrome .. because we work 14 hours a day 6 (sometimes 7) days a week, to get ready for the launch of our newest venture and we cannot lose that much days on browser related issues ... so please instead of putting me through week long step process .. of do this .. do that .. can you please actually look into the issue from your end .. I use firefox for so many, many years thta I deserve this kind of support .. thnx Robert

  • Premiere Pro CC 7.1 choppy playback every 12 seconds

    Hi,
I have a strange problem. I'm playing back 1080p/23.976 MXF footage on a 1080p/23.976 MXF timeline (identical), and the video stutters every 12 seconds. It manifests as a kind of deja-vu, where a small section of maybe 5 frames appears to play twice. During it, the audio continues perfectly, and I have perfect lip-sync throughout. So I believe that what's happening is that PP is dropping 5 frames and then playing the next 5 frames twice. Otherwise I can't explain why it maintains lip-sync, and the audio plays continuously at the right pitch. It's like an odd repeating-time artifact that would be a plot-point on Star Trek.
The problem is not in the video file itself -- if I play it again, it happens somewhere else, and it doesn't appear in exports. It's strictly playback.
My system is extremely strong, Core i7, 48 GB RAM, at least 100 MB/sec throughput from the RAID. During the stutter, there's nothing to see on the CPU graph. I don't otherwise have video playback issues on the machine. It's only in PP.
I've tried switching in and out of the Mercury CUDA vs. CPU, and it makes no difference. It also happens whether I play a clip in the source monitor or on the timeline. It happens whether or not I'm video mirroring. It happens regardless of what the playback resolution is. It happens regardless of what codec the footage is. It happens with both MXF, MPEG and MP4.
Most importantly, the Dropped Frame Indicator does *not* detect that it's happening.
While it's certainly possible to keep uninstalling things to find out if maybe something is interacting with PP in a bad way, that's very destructive on a work-system, and I want to hear if anyone has experienced something similar.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Per

    Hi,
I solved it, and I'm posting the solution here for someone else. It has to do with the Turbo mode on the Core i7 processor.
I happened to notice that the jump happened during a period of no video on the timeline, and I saw that the playhead literally jumped back, which led me to conclude that this had nothing to do with GPU, but was related to the timebase. I searched the Adobe forums for posts related to a jumping playhead, and found a guy who said that the Turbo mode on the Core i7 processor messes with Premiere's timebase, and the playhead jump is a correction for it.
Switch do regular High Performance mode, and video is completely smooth.
Thank God I didn't go out and buy new video cards and tore the computer apart and did clean installs as was suggested. But it's pure luck, that would have been my next step.
    Thanks, some guy!

  • Display random mysql record after every 8 seconds???

Looking to see if I could get some suggestions on how to

Apart from the fact that running a MySQL query every 8
    seconds is likely
to use a lot of resources and probably result in an intensely
    annoying
web page, you are attempting something for which server-side
    programming
is not designed. A dynamic page using PHP (or any other
    server-side
language) is created by sending a request from the browser to
    the
server, where it queries the database, and sends back the
    result. So, to
do what you want, you need to send a new request every 8
    seconds.
The only way to guarantee that it will work is to send a
    request for the
full page, using the refresh meta tag. This is extremely
    wasteful of
resources, and is likely to drive visitors mad, as the page
    rebuilds
seven times a minute. To rebuild just the part of the page
    that you want
to change, you would need to use Ajax or Flash.
A more sensible approach might be to send one query to the
    database, and
store a large number of results in an array. You could then
    use
JavaScript and DOM manipulation to select an element from the
    array at
random. However, like Ajax, this approach depends on
    JavaScript being
enabled in the browser. You would also need considerable
    scripting
    skills to set it up.

Firefox is locking up VERY frequently after every few seconds unless I minimize the window and maximize it again. But then in a few seconds it locks up again, I am unable to click anything or DO anything and it is becoming extremely annoying! Ya'll just released a new version that I'd hoped would have fixed this issue, apparently not...and I also can't select an option in a drop down box, I have to use my keyboard to do so...
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Yeah I'm seeing this as well. A force quit and relaunch seems to solve the problem for a while.
IMHO the app has just gone downhill in the last few years. Useful tools like browser history from the back button are hidden / rendered useless (click and hold doesn't work so well from a track pad), and it's performance just isn't what it used to be.

  • ITunes (10.7.0.21) steals window focus every 60 seconds

Extremely annoying - I have been using itunes for about 3 years and have had every version update since I started, so I'm not sure why it has started happening now.
Even trying to type this question out is annoying as every 60 seconds my cursor flicks over to the itunes window and screws up my typing.
    Any ideas?
I have seen similar problems in the forums going back years but I've never encountered it myself before.
    Thanks
    Alasala

If you can't figure out if a program is causing the issue, I have found a fix that works for me using  iTunes v. 11.0.2.6 and Windows 8
The fix however eliminates ANY program from stealing focus in windows.  Which I prefer anyway.  This means that you will have to pay attention to your desktop bar or start menu for flashing.  This will let you know the program is asking for your attention.
    Open Regedit
    Browse to HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\
Change “ForegroundLockTimeout” to “30d40”  (make sure this is in HEX not Decimal)
    Restart your Computer.
For those of you worried about messing with your registry, it is a serious thing to do and it should NOT be taken lightly, Here’s the Page from Microsoft telling you what the key is so you know this is legit fix.  I always recommend backing up your registry and creating a save point BEFORE making any changes.

  • Ical keeps popping up every 2 seconds to remind me to go to "CalDav". I am not a computer person.

This calendar tells me I need to go to a server to do (something) about my password which it won't recognize. I don't want it to recognize my password, and I don't care. I just want the calendar to stop popping up every 2 seconds!

lol yea verizon sucks, and i can't tell you how many horrible experiences i've had with a number of different verizon stores.  it's gonna be like that no matter where you go.  i live in new jersey and in my whole area, there's only ONE verizon store where things are decent.  just decent.  HOWEVER.  i recently upgraded my phone to the chocolate touch at a verizon kiosk in a sam's club.  my experience was WONDERFUL.  since the kiosk is privately owned they can make up their own rules so i got the chocolate touch for FREE which i haven't seen anywhere, i got a bunch of accessories, also for FREE, and the associate was extremely nice.  he was very helpful, and set everything up before i left.  at a kiosk!  who knew?!  i have also had pretty decent experiences at other verizon wireless kiosks as well.

  • CS4 Installation Causing Extreme Slowdowns

I recently installed CS4 on my computer (HP xw4300 workstation).  In the process I somehow lost my user profile and am experiencing extreme slowdowns when trying to open any of the CS4 programs.  I actually talked to HP customer service and they said there is no reason (memory capability, etc...) as to why this should be happening.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Ellie,
To fix your problem, I would suggest adding memory to your system.  Your processor seems to be O.K. (but nothing more), so investing a tiny $25 into memory would be a good solution possibly.
Add another GB of RAM or so.  If that is too expensive, get this RAM.
If you are not experienced in computer maintenance, make sure you follow the simple steps of installing more memory.  It really isn't that hard.  And unless you go rubbing your feet around on the carpet and come back to shock your computer, you're not going to wreck it.  Just remember to ground yourself once in a while on the power supply (the box inside the computer case).
I don't know how much you know, so here's some simple steps:
    Turn your computer off
    Unplug it (fat black cord)
Wait about 30 seconds (the motherboard holds power for a little while)
Open the case (the 'box' that makes the noise when it's on)
Ground yourself to the power supply by touching the metal housing (again, this is the *usually silver box inside the case - around where you pulled the cable from the back)
Find the slots for the memory (make sure there is no dust in the slots!)
Open the clasps and put the sticks in evenly with equal amount of pressure on both sides until they snap in
    Close the case
    Plug it in
    Turn it on
Once the PC is on and you're logged on, press the windows key (on the bottom - between the 'Ctrl' and 'Alt' keys) and the 'Pause/Break' button at the same time.  This will bring up your system properties.  Depending on how much RAM you bought, it should show something like 1.5GB or 2.5GB or a large number of MB's (2444MB for example).  If it still shows 512MB, you either didn't install the chips correctly or the system isn't recognizing them.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mds Error every 4 seconds

Hi, I posted this in a 10.5 (Client) thread, but didn't get any answers there. Since I figured it might be related to OD I'm posting this again over here:
I took a look into the console due to something unrelated and noticed this error message flooding the console every 4 seconds!

I only copied 4 of them here so you can see that it's exactly the same message. There's ~4000(!) of these entries for just the last 2 days. I believe it has something to do with metadata, but don't know where to start solving it.
As always, any help is appreciated!

PS: 1028 is the user id of an Open Directory account. This user is sometimes logged in on my Mac, but its home is on the 10.5 Server, if that helps...

Well, this is a bit off topic for this forum category, not to mention that I found this out by a screw-up, but....
When Apple dumb-downed Leopard' s Firewall GUI (from Tiger) into an Application Firewall (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1810) to make it user friendly (i.e, very Microsofty-ish) they also crippled the GUI's ability to configure it, so I looked into alternatives to tighten security. Fortunately, Apple uses ipfw, which is extremely configurable (see http://macsecure.com/2007/11/09/managing-the-leopard-firewall-with-waterroof/ )... which leads me to how I found out the messages described in the post were most likekely a hack attempt.
I wanted to add firewall rules that would only allow access to workstations from our servers, and SSH access only from our subnet, but I screwed up one of the rules, which in turn negated the processing of all the following rules... Duh....
My plan for testing the firewall was to leave one machine running continuously for several days, exposed to the internet, and logging all ip activity.
Fortunately the rule that says log all ip activity was not negated so when I checked the machine a few days later its firewall log was full of stuff and included hundreds of of the the following entries.

  • Com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore keeps rebuilding every 3 seconds!

It's hitting the disk constantly. I've had some weird spinning beach balls go on lately, and last couple of weeks I discovered the old problem of this disk hit stuff. It just keeps replacing itself literally about every 3 seconds.
I went back to some old posts (where this was problem) using terminal commands supplied and I tried that now and it didn't seem to work.
I haven't figured out yet what triggers it, or what kills it, as every once in a while I'll take a peek and it's not doing this. I trash teh com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore and it's buddy, but it rebuilds faster than one can restart, and the home folder LaunchServices plist, all to no avail.
Help me kill this (and keep it "killed"?)! Thanks!

If that's all one needs, it's a very good product. However, there can be more to Backup and Recovery than duplicates. I hold a license for SuperDuper and several other Backup and Recovery utilities as it's an area of interest for me, so I'm regularly testing and comparing them.
Retrospect has far more capability: it's truly the "Swiss Army Knife" of Backup and Recovery utilities and why I recommend it. Backup Sets, for example, are a Retrospect exclusive and are extremely useful. Backup to optical media, including media spanning, is another unique feature. As noted in my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ, Retrospect Express is often bundled for free with FireWire drives, making cost a moot point. One can do incremental duplicates with Retrospect Express whereas one must license SuperDuper to do so. If Retrospect was bundled for free with one's FireWire drive, one should at least give a try.
Likewise, Retrospect itself isn't that expensive: what gets expensive is adding the support contracts to Retrospect, but those are generally not required.
    Good luck!

    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Does anyone else have to renew their DHCP Lease every 30 seconds when using the internet?

Everytime I want to use the internet for surfing the web or browsing iTunes etc I have to go into System Preferences and navigate through to a button that says "Renew DHCP Lease". If watching catch-up TV online I have to click this button every 30 seconds or so because the programme freezes, and if I'm surfing the web or browsing iTunes I have to click it every time I want to update the content of the page. Does anybody know what my problem might be?

This Fix has got things working for me.
I have reprinted this response from another thread I have made (Repost) A number of people were asking me about my fix, so I have expanded my response to hopefully offer a little more clarity.
I was having this problem the other night after I finished doing a massive upgrade to our Home Network (New Router, Modem, Cabling, Etc)
I had to reset my DHCP lease every few minutes, in the end I found Mac Mini's IP Address kept setting itself to other items on the Network, I have some items connected on wired (ethernet) and some were connected on WiFi (Airport Extreme) after clicking the DHCP Lease Renew the Mac Mini would grab an IP address that it thought was available but then another item on my network would "check in" then we would have a clash, The Mac Mini was grabbing what it thought was an available IP address, the DHCP Renew button was not setting the Mac Mini's IP number far enough away to stop the clash.
I was watching the items on my Routers Attached devices screen, The Mac Mini would show up on the page with its new address (after hitting the DHCP Renewal button) then something else would check in with that exisiting IP Address, clash and the Mac Mini would need it's DHCP lease renewed again.
    My Network consists of:
    - Mac Mini (Wired)
    - Acer Laptop (Wired)
    - PS3 (1) (wired)
    - Apple TV (wired)
    - Airport Extreme (wired and looking ater WiFi duties throughout the house)
    - PS3 (2) (WiFi)
    - TV (WiFi)
    - iPad (WiFi)
    - Nexus 7 (WiFi)
    - Printer (WiFi)
I'll be the first to admit my Networking knowledge is limited (and I'm learning more all the Time) but I simply went into the preferences panel and set the IP address manually.
    1. I went into Preferences and selected Network
    2. Set Configure IPV4 to: using DHCP with manual address
Now it helped I had my NetGear Routers "Attached devices" Page open here so I could see the address of everything else on my network (I went and switched everything on that was web connected so it would be logged in and running on the network) I looked at the last digit or 2 of every item on my network and then set my new IP address.
    3. To ensure I wouldn't have any more clashes I set my new IP address far away from the the others* your only changing the last digit or 2 of the IP address, so in the case of my Mac Mini it went from
xxx.xxx.02 to xxx.xxx.0.52 (note the x's are normally your IP address numbers)
*I originally set it to xxx.xxx.09 but I since found the TV had that IP address (The one thing I forgot to check the previous night) so I this is when I decided to set it far away from the rest of the bunch by setting it to .52 (No specific reason for 52, that was just the 1st number to pop into my head)
Now that was over a week ago and since then I have had no more issues on my Network, so far everything is running smooth and fast. (It has now been over 3 weeks since I posted this, and everything is still working perfectly, I suggested this solution to 2 friends having the same issue and it also fixed there problems as well)
I'm not saying this is the be all and end all to the problem, there must be a more permanent solution out there, but this is working for me so far.

  • Finder crashes and restarts every 5 seconds or so!

I just installed the Quicktime Security Update. After I restarted the laptop and logged into my account, the finder began to crash and restart every five seconds, making the computer nearly unusable. I logged out and logged into another account that I have for debugging. In this account everything works. I have run "Repair Disk Positions," restarted, and tried again. Still I'm having the same problem.
Any ideas what the problem might be and how to fix it?
    Roy

FWIW, I find it extremely difficult to discern or detect the link that "this" links to, that's part of the reason I use the whole http myself.
Boy, if you think my post was terse you should read posts by a certain L5. He provides very good information but I have never seen him post any answer with more than 10 words. Many are of the format, "No. Read [this]."
I correct myself. More than 6 words.

  • Problem with MacMail on MacBook Air - mail with 32MB attachment appearing in "recovered messages" folder every 12 seconds

Problem with MacMail on MacBook Air
3 days ago I failed to send a mail with a large (32MB) attachment - and it is no longer in my outbox, draft mails or sent file.
BUT a copy of this same mail now appears every about 15 seconds in my "recovered messages" folder
I noticed when I received a system error saying I had a disk almost full issue - there were over 580 copies of the mail with 32MB attachment in the "recovered messages file"
I deleted them all, and deleted the Trash
BUT the message still keeps re-appearing every 15 seconds or so.  So I keep deleting them.
Since then I have not been able to receive mail (altho' I am able to send) and Mail is VERY slow
    I am running MAC OS X 10.6.8
    I am running Mail version 4.6 (1085)

Also here's the log before it happened. As you can see there is no activity from 9:48 to 10:00 am when the sound occurred.

  • My macbook pro screen blinks every 10 seconds

Is there any solution for a blinking screen?
Seems to be blinking about every 10 seconds, makes it very had to compose an email as when it blinks i will lose my typing ability.
I think it started around the time of the last OS upgrade.
Has anyone else experianced this problem?

I have the same issue with mine and sadly I missed the date to get Applecare on this machine (they usually call but this time around they didn't).  ***** that I didn't get this resolved before my warranty ran out .. I'm certainly not going to shell out for a replacement motherboard out of pocket.  I now use the 9600 graphics exclusively and can almost watch my battery drop by the minute.
On a side note I'm not very impressed with the quality control Apple has had with their portables in the last few years.  I bought this unit refurbished and it took two units to get one that worked properly, and even then this one never did as it's had this video blinking issue since day one.  The problem is I didn't really notice it until recently when I started using it running more often on battery and decided to use the mobile chipset to save battery time.  This is the third MBP I've had and their 3rd MBP that's had motherboard issues.
When it comes time to replace this one I'm seriously considering going with a macbook air or something else.  Can't justify spending the money on more MBP's with such terrible track records.
