Extremely slow mac all of a sudden, Frequent SPOD

Today I started getting some pretty severe slowdown/performance problems with the Macbook Pro that I've been using.   My EtreCheck log sheet is attached at the end of this message.
What I was doing before -The last time I remember was that I was having issues with Firefox and did some "Force Quit" commands and then tried to re-install a fresh copy.  I did not install MacKeeper or anything like that.
System-
2.5 GHz, Macbook Pro (13 inch display)
4 GB
Problems -
The problems started rather suddenly this morning.    Since then, the computer basically runs extremely slowly and crashes often.  This includes frequent "spinning wheels of death" for programs/commands executed by mouse clicking.  For programs that are not run by this the commands generally just 'hang' for various stretches of time.
Things I've done/checked -
So far, I've done several things to either fix the problem or diagnose it.  No effects as far as  I can see:
- used Activity Monitor to verify that the system is not paging the hard drive (i.e. that I'm out of RAM) and that there are no programs chewing up a large amount of CPU.  .   System is not paging the hard drive no problems using a ton of CPU.
- cleared the Dynamic Link Editor Cache from here:
sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
- Used EtreCheck (output attached below).
Things I've noticed
- GUI-executed programs get the spinning wheel of death; those executed from command line hang.
- During a 'hang', different tabs of a web browser become invisible.
- If I execute IDL (a programming/image display language) from Terminal in a new directory, it hangs the first time or will hang periodically.  If I exit and then execute again it loads progressively faster.  Same thing happens with simple unix commands like "ls" or "pwd"
Things I've yet to do- I haven't run Disk Utility yet.   The initial time estimate for running it was very long, so I thought I would try to solve the problem in other ways first.
- I have not tried to wipe the hard drive.
EtreCheck log sheet
Problem description:
I have frequent “Spinning Wheel of Death” freezes for commands I execute with a GUI/mouse clicking, hanging with command line executables (e.g. in Terminal) and overall slowness.

The good news is that it doesn't look like I'm getting I/O errors.  I am getting a lot of other things that are confusing to me.

  • Extremely slow mbp all of the sudden

I have a mbp that is about 3 years old. When I turned it on last night, it took forever to start up, and every program I was using ran extremely slow, often displaying the spinning color wheel. When I had last used the computer before this it worked just fine with no slowness. This has never happened before. I checked the Activity Monitor and nothing seems to be hogging a ton of memory or processor power. My hard drive is not near to being full.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

One common cause is a failing harddrive. I hope you have your data backed up; a cloned external harddrive is recommended. Can you check your SMART status is Disk Utility? That can be a major clue if the drive is failing, but not definitive. With a cloned external drive, you can also boot from it and if that runs normally, another clue pointing to the internal drive.
Of course, there could be any number of other causes.

  • Slow bootup all of a sudden

    Hi all,
Ytd all of a sudden my MBP start up becomes extremely slow. It takes ages, around 3 to 5mins or longer. (got no chance to use stopwatch to time it yet) This is what happens.
Press power button -> have the boot up sound -> white screen with apple logo and spinning gear. (from this the wait is unbearable) -> go to a blue screen and wait some more maybe around 1 min -> go to login page and type in password -> long process of loading everything, feel sluggish -> after sometime it works normally again.
From sleep to wake up -> able to open instantly but after logging in, there are freezes for a while.
I don't hear any HDD clicking sounds. I have installed windows 7 via bootcamp as well but that is sometime ago and doesn't give me problems.
My mac HDD left storage is at 170GB, so it shouldn't be because there is not enough space.
    Running 8GB RAM.
This is some of the steps that I have tried and not working.
    1. Uninstall the software that I installed.
    2. Reset PRAM and NVRAM.
    3. Change my RAM physically and still behave the same way. (so i believe it is not RAM failure)
    4. Try disk repair and permission repair through the CD as well.
    5. Try to boot up in verbose mode and saw that loading kernel chace file 'System\Library\Caches\com.apple.kext.caches\Startup\kernelcache_x86_64.3311734 7
(the waiting at that part is very long)
What other thing should I try? Or is this a sign that HDD is failing?
Can anyone know what is this problem?
I search around and most of the solution not helping me at all. =/
    I appreciate the helps. Thanks.

Your hard drive may be failing. One indicator of a failing drive: slow operation on both the Mac and Windows partitions. Another indicator: inability to reinstall OS X from the original installation discs. Disk Utility and even the Apple Hardware Test provide little useful information in a situation such as yours. However, desktop drives typically have a lifespan of 4-5 years, so failure would not be surprising at this point in time.
You could try to reformat the HDD and reinstall OS X again, though you're likely to hit the same error/timeout road block that tripped you up the first time if the hard drive is failing. So, alternatives:
-- Replace the hard drive. You'll find good instructions at iFixit.com and OWC (macsales.com). OR . . .
-- Install OS X (and, if you need it, Windows, too) on an external drive. You'll get best performance by using your fastest port--that is, FireWire 800 rather than USB 2 on a mid 2010 iMac.

  • Extremely slow mac mini

i am using a mac mini with 2 GB of ram and 2.3 intel core i5, my os is OS X 10.7.5, recently, my computer has been extremely slow, for every click i did, it takes at least 10 seconds to respond, i could not find out why.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.

A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

    Problem description:
I upgraded to Yosemite recently.  Now my computer acts like it has a virus although my virus checker says it is clean.  It is slow, freezes all the time, I have to turn off my computer to get it to work again.  I don’t like the new Yosemite.

  • When printing from my Mac all of a sudden when printing from IPhoto the picture is really dark.  The test page off my HP color laser jet is just fine.  It is not the printer although older.  All of sudden it does not want to print correctly.

All of a sudden when printing from my desktop Mac in IPhoto the printout comes out black.  My colors are fine on my HP color laser printer.  I have printed many times and now all of a sudden it is not printing.  A test copy from my printer comes out fine.  I really think for some reason something has changed just in the last few days.  Just communication with IPhoto and the computer.

As long as your cartriges are full, put a photo on you desktop, highlight it , click COMMAND P and the print preferences window should drop down, and select your printer and photo paper.

  • Major Aperture slow-down all of a sudden

All of a sudden, I'm having performance problems with Aperture. I'm running a Dual-core 2.3GHz G5 with 4.5GB of RAM and a GeForce 7800GT, so this shouldn't be a hardware problem. It seems to be a problem when it's trying to display a lot of images. It will slow down immensely, even to the point where I cannot scroll. The really weird part is when the toolbar item images disappear. Anyone have any idea why this would happen? Thanks

Had the same problem today. It started out fast then after several hours of work it slowly started to get slower and slower until it finally just stopped responding. Restart got it going again but it was still pretty slow. Almost like it was building a cache or scratch file that kept getting larger and slowing the program down.
That was on the DP 2.0 G5 not the Quad

  • My Mac, all of a sudden, actually says error messages like: "A File couldn't not fetched from the network..."

All of a sudden my mac starts speaking, but it only reads an error message. "A file could not be fetched from the network" but Voice over is turned off, I double checked it. I don't know what happened, but it's annoying, because it is so random.
    I really need help.
    Chris

I think I know the culprit now, it is Little Snitch and its Audio Prompts. I found something in their Forum but you can't dectivate it.

  • Extremely slow Mac after updating to Snow Leopard from Leopard

Hi, I just updated to Snow Leopard from Leopard, and now everything is extremely slow, things keep crashing, freezing etc. What did I do wrong? How do I fix it?

    Do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Really slow broadband all of a sudden.

Chatted to a bloke from BT both through the online chat and again on the phone about this issue and he said he would change some settings his end to try and increase our broadband speed. The broadband used to be fine, could stream videos just fine, browse the internet without any issues then all of a sudden the speed has dropped to below 1mbps (582kbps using the speedtester.bt.com).
The speedtester itself said that an "acceptable" speed should be between 600kb-7.5mbps. Frankly that is a bit of a joke as 600kbps is near enough where it is currently and even the 3G signal my iPhone is getting here loads web pages faster.
Just to reiterate, the speed was fine up until about 4-5 days ago.
Wiring inside house hasn't changed, don't have any extension sockets using homehub 2.0.

    Please Help!!!

After no luck whatsoever with the people on the online chat help system and after 3 calls to the customer help number I have finally been told that there is nothing wrong with my houses wiring, router etc etc. But the problem seems to lie (after the fourth line test in as many days) on the line between my house and the exchange!!!
How is it the other people that conducted line tests couldn't see that or did they not both and just spout some BS at me as they couldn't be bothered to actually get to the bottom of this issue?! Perplexes me how the first 3 line tests I was kept on the line whilst they carried out the test but on the fourth time of asking I was told that whilst a line test was underway I should not use the landline at all...
Pretty shoddy customer service to me from the first bunch of people I spoke to. Not happy.
Now I have been told that I will have to wait another 2-3 days until and engineer examines the line and possibly even longer after that until the problem gets fixed and its been broken for over a week now!! What are we BT customers actually paying for?!

  • Mac book pro slow performance all of a sudden.. please help.

Mac book is running slow all of sudden. Please help debug the issue.

Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an  SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Painfully slow system all of a sudden

    Hi there,
Today my system slowed to the pace of a snail, and I'd love some help from you guys to work out why. Here are the facts:
    - EVERYthing was running slow, all applications, rather than just one. What I had open was: Mori, Appleworks, iTunes, Stickies and Firefox (which had about 30 tabs open, so I don't know if that may have caused it, but I do often have that many open and it's usually ok.) Even bringing up the login window after the screen saver had been on took almost a minute from when I pressed a key!
    - I opened Activity Monitor, which I'm not too experienced with using, but I hoped it could give me a clue as to what was up. Here are some screen shots if you'd be so kind as to look.

I'll happily provide any more shots of particular areas of activity monitor if it would help.
I noticed that a widget 'UK TV Guide' was highlighted in red, but I can't figure out what that means. It seemed to be using alot of CPU considering it shouldn't even be doing anything, so I trashed it. I'd love to know why it showed up red if anyone knows. I had downloaded this only yesterday, so it would be the one variable that's changed recently that I can think of, but I'm hoping it wasn't causing the problem as I'd like to have that widget!
It did seem to me that it was Firefox that was taking up so much power on my CPU, as you can see on the pics, it's maxed out, and I'm not running something like Photoshop. It couldn't be spyware slowing me down could it? I didn't think there was any for Macs.
I did a shut down and came back and re-started half an hour later and now it's running fine, but I don't want this to happen again and I'd like to work out what was wrong. Today has been so frustrating for me, especially as I work from home online so my computer goes wrong it panics me a bit.
I've also recently had some issues that it's been waking up for no apparent reason just after I've set it to sleep. It also froze the other day for the first time ever i.e. mouse moved but clock stopped, couldn't get any reaction from clicking on things. I did a hardware test and verified my hard disk, and both were fine.
I have 512 MB of ram, so could it be I need to upgrade?
I'm also running 10.4.7, so maybe if I get the combo upgrade to 10.4.8, that could help.
I'd love some help on this, sorry the message is long, I was just trying to provide the info someone may need to help me figure what's wrong.
    Thanks for your time,
    Charity

    Thanks for your reply.
I think it must have been some Flash content, I could easily have had pages open with flash, coupled with my lack of RAM. I'm suprised I had too many programmes running, as I thought most of them were pretty un-demanding. My computer's usually works at a reasonable speed, so I think it must have been a particular page I was on at the time. You said Firefox uses alot of processor cycles; did you mean just Firefox or all web browsers? I don't want to change really, but it would help to know.
Still, I can upgrade my RAM by 1 GB, making a total of 1.5 GB. I'm strapped for cash right now, so unless this problem persists and I am forced to buy it now, I may wait a bit. I'll have to see how it goes.
I think my maintenence routine could be improved, although it's better than most people's.
    - I always repair permissions before and after an upgrade, and I usually use the full combo upgrades.
    - I don't use any apps to run CRON scripts right now, but I do have the widget 'Maintidget' which tells me when they were last run. I CAN also run the scripts from within that, but I'm not too sure whether that's wise, do you know if it's reliable and safe?
    - I clean out my internet caches by using the 'Clear Private Data' tool in Firefox. I'm not sure if it came built in or was part of an extension, just incase it was and you have no idea what I'm on about!
    - I don't defragment, use disk warrior or force prebind my system, but I do repair or verify my hard drive once in a while using Disk Utility.
Thanks for you help Gulliver, I'd appreciate if you'd briefly answer the other couple of quick questions in this post.

  • Indesign extremly slow (Mac Pro)

    Hi all,
my InDesign is very slow since i have updated from CS 4 to CS 5.5.
It seems to be pretty slow when i place some PDF into the .indd.
Also in low-quality settings it was incredibly slow and the cpu-usage
was far over 100%. How can this be?
I have tested the System in 32 and 64bit-mode.
    System specs:
    Adobe CS 5.5 (latest updates)
    Mac Pro 3,1
    Dual-Quadcore 3 Ghz
    10 GB Ram
    NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT
    OS X 10.6.8 (latest upates)
I hope there is a solution.
InDesign is also pretty slow on my PC.
    i5-3570K
    DD3-2133MHz
    Ati HD-7950
    edit:
I have changed one settings now in InDesign.
While moving an object i cant see the content now
in real-time. This is a performance gain.
But i still wonder how bad the InDesign-engine is.
While my computer is able to render a complex
3D-scene in an amazing fps-count, InDesign
has huge cpu-load with some flat 2d stuff.

The speed of the application can be related to many things, including:
    RAM
    Live pre-flight running
    Live spell check running
    Display set to High
    Other applications running
    OS
You mention waiting for an update for Mavericks - there are already a few threads in this forum about issues with Mavericks - check them out.
