EyeTV 250 Plus - Signal Loss

Anyone besides me have this issue with the 250 plus?
I have the Hauppauge 950Q from my Vista plugged into the Mac now to use with the EyeTV software. The signal is 75% strength and the quality is 100% 720p and 50% at best for 1080i. 720p I can see okay but the 1080i stops and goes once in a while.
With the 250 plus, I have 100% quality but 10%-20% strength with the 720p and then it's jumping percentages of quality on 1080i with the 10-20% strength. Both are way horrible.
Is the mac mini not powerful enough to run any tuner or is there a stronger HD tuner for Elgato EyeTV that anyone knows of?

Here is a link to the hardware requirements for the EyeTV 250 Plus. http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/250plus/product3.en.html
There is also some FAQs. http://support.elgato.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=view&parentcategoryid=1&languageid=1&group=englishdefault
I would recommend posting your question on the Elgato forums. http://forums.elgato.com/

  • Exporting files from Eyetv 250 plus to imovies09

I AM TRYING TO COPY VHS TAPES TO DVD DISC USING EYETV 250 PLUS. CAN COPY FILES TO EYETV FINE. IN EYETV THEY ARE ABOUT 3 GB. WHEN I EXPORT TO IMOVIES09 I GET 3 FILES, A THUMBNAIL FILE ABOUT 300000MB, A QUICKTIME FILE OF 3 GB AND A DV MOVIE FILE OF 30-40 GB. THIS IS FILLING MY COMPUTER VERY FAST.

    A couple of thoughts...
The current version of EyeTV software is 3.3. Make sure you are on it.
You should be able to open the "Recordings" view of EyeTV.
Right Click on the recording you want. Click Export in the Pop Up menu. In the Format box, Choose "For iMovie 09"
Give it a place to save to, and click SAVE.
Now open iMovie. Click FILE/IMPORT/Movie... and navigate to the file you just created in EyeTV.

  • MyTV.PVR vs EyeTV 250...Is there a winner?

    Hy everyone,
I was looking for opinions regarding myTV.PVR vs EyeTV 250.
Without knowing much about VHS tranfering and recording digitally via Cable TV and before I found out about the existence of EyeTV 250, I purchased myTV.PVR (which came with Eskape software). The salesman assured me that it was a good purchase but I guess they would say anything to sell products.
I told him that my intention was to transfer VHS tapes onto DVDs and also to record from Cable TV onto DVDs via my MacPro. I wanted to get the best video quality possible and something easy enough to use.
Now I'm wondering if I would have been better off with EyeTV 250 instead.
Which one gives better video and sound quality and has better options?
    Any opinions?
    Rio.
    2x2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB RAM

I can answer. I've transferred about 300 vhs tapes over to DVD, AVI, MP4, etc.
Quality is dependent upon the quality of the VHS. I have VHS tapes that were created directly from digital video camcorder (medical procedures, surgery training) and the DVD quality is as good as any high quality commercial DVD. I have BetaMax tapes from the 70's and they burn to DVD from EyeTV as good if not better then their original quality. With EyeTV you have several quality options and can select Progressive Scan (which doubles the number of video lines for higher quality. You'll need at least 4Gigs of space for each VHS tape but once burned to DVD you can delete and move to the next.
Toast is the most superior EyeTV is built with Toast in mind. Simply drag an AVI or directly select Toast from EyeTV of any resulting VHS/Digital file that you capture and it will burn a fine DVD with Chapters, Titles, and more.
What I like most about EyeTV is the editing capabilities. You can cut out all the crap, re-edit the movie if you want to improve it (in case you are a budding movie editor yourself) and burn it to DVD.
As for easy - yes, it's pretty straight forward. If you have a two hour VHS movie, say a commercial release of an older James Bond (which is non-Macro, i.e., encrypted) movie it will take two hours to record it. Once recorded you can then edit the items you don't want (warnings, junk...) save the edited file (very quickly) then click on the EyeTV Toast icon and burn it to DVD. If using Progressive Scan you'll get a very high quality DVD. How much time required to burn the DVD depends. If you are using a 3Ghz Mac Pro with 8 Gigs of RAM (my system) it takes about 20-30 minutes.
If you have commercial VHS tapes that are encrypted (MacroVision is used) you'll need to obtain what some sellers call "an enhancer". This is small machine (size of two packs of cigarettes) that sits connected via RCA cables or via SVideo and reconnects out the opposite side to EyeTV, then your video is automatically decrypted.
The resulting DVD quality is "enhanced" and you get a fine quality DVD.
If you are copying over films or TV shows that you have recorded on VHS tapes then the quality is about as good as SVCD, depending on how well your antenna receives the signal. You'll have to cut out the commercials (easy to do with EyeTV) and the resulting DVD quality is as good if not a little better then the original VHS recording.
I did all of the above for about six months and finally realized I could copy a VHS tape via EyeTV and export it to high quality DiVX or AVI format which resulted in an average size of about 700megs. These media files play beautifully on a Mac using the DiVX player or RealMedia Player, QuickTime Pro, VLC and many more media players.
The nice part of the latter is that you can get four or five full high quality movies on a blank DVD. Thus, rather than four or five DVDs you get one DVD with for or five movies.
I hope this explains it all to you. Try buying a used EyeTV 200 off of eBay which is just as good as the EyeTV 250 and 500. They all use the latest EyeTV software and unless you have movies in High Density on VHS (which you won't) you don't need EyeTV 500 (that's what I have) but it does a fine job. Another Mac user that taught me much was a guy who bought a used EyeTV 200 on eBay for just $50. We exchanged DVDs we made from each system and they were both of excellent quality.
    I hope this helps.

  • (Bug) Google Talk on webOS 2.1 doesn't re-login after signal loss

    Device: Palm Pre 2
    WebOS version: 2.1.0
Issue:  Google Talk does not automatically re-login after signal loss (and sometimes gets into a state that it cannot re-login at all)
Description:  Whenever I lose signal (go in the elevator, into tunnels on the subway, etc...) I get logged out of Google Talk. On Palm Pre + with 1.4.5 on ATT i would never have a problem as it would always log me back in automatically as soon as (or shortly after) signal was found again, whether wifi or 3g/edge.   But on Palm Pre 2 with webos 2.1, it stays logged off.  I can manually set status to Available to re-login, but its really annoying and clearly used to work in the past.  Additionally, in certain circumstances I get disconnected and CANNOT manually log back in.  I try to set status to Available but nothing happens, no spinner, no nothing.  The only way to get this to work again is if I do a restart (or Luna restart).  I've notice this happens at my school where 3g connectivity is really poor and frequently I don't have any.  Instead I connect to the school's wifi network which sometimes disconnects.  After losing connectivity too many times and/or too many login failures, it just stops allowing me to re-login, even manually, until I restart.
This is really annoying and is a regression as it used to work in 1.4.5.  Any ideas how to fix it and/or if a fix is being worked on would be greatly appreciated.

  • What's the difference between  El Gato Eye Tv 250 Plus and Canopus ADVC110

Is there any difference between these two devices? Both enable me to transfer videos/ Both enable me to hook up a television signal. So - is there any other significant difference?
    Thanks.

Canopus will convert the analog source to DV format which is natively editable by iMovie.
EyeTV 250 and EyeTV Hybrid will convert the analog source to MPEG2. To edit in iMovie you need to further convert the MPEG2 files using MPEG Streamclip (free) and the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component ($20). You can convert them to AIC or DV for best editing results. I deinterlace in this step, as well. If you don't plan to edit, you can sent the MPEG2 files directly to TOAST from the EyeTV software. You can also convert the MPEG2 files to h.264 format using the EyeTV software for use on AppleTV, iPhone, iPod, iTunes, etc.
Personally, I use the EyeTV Hybrid, which is all you need if you have an Intel Mac. If you have a Power PC Mac, get an EyeTV that offloads the processing such as the 250. I have to go through an extra step before editing, but I am getting excellent results, and I also get to watch and record HDTV on my Mac.
These days, I should also mention that the EyeTV solution connects via USB, while the Canopus connects via Firewire. Some recent MacBooks do not have a Firewire port, but if you have an older Macbook, or any iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, they should all have firewire.

  • Any noticable signal loss with the DVI-to-video adapter?

Hi, there. Would any of you happen to know whether there's an appreciable signal loss when converting from DVI to, say, composite video via the DVI-to-video adapter? I'd like to hook my MBP up to an HDTV (when I eventually get one), and I'm wondering if going through the adapter would produce a degraded picture for DVDs, compared to a direct digital connection from a DVD player to the TV.
Actually, I'm wondering the same thing about the audio connection. Any loss in audio quality when using an adapter to connect the MBP's mini-jack to an HDTV or receiver?
    Thanks much.

    ragamoffyn,
While there's no "signal loss," as such, there is a considerable loss in signal quality. However, you're over-thinking this...
HDTVs accept HDMI connections, and your Macbook Pro has a DVI output. The ports are dissimilar, but digital video signal is the same. In other words, you would simply use a DVI-to-HDMI cable. In fact, many HD cable boxes (mine included) still have a DVI port, not an HDMI port. There is no loss of signal or quality.
Really, the only difference between DVI and HDMI is the fact that HDMI transmits both video and digital audio. DVI doesn't do this, so you must resort to transmitting audio separately. Not a problem: use an optical digital cable, which your Macbook Pro will accept (as will most HDTVs). That said, you might be better off connecting the audio portion of your MBP's output to a home entertainment (surround sound??) receiver.
Now, I'm not sure about the "progressive scan" capabilities of the Macbook Pro and DVD Player. You'll have to research that yourself. I can tell you that normal DVDs can be "upconverted" by a progressive scan set-top DVD player, and the result looks absolutely stunning on an HDTV. It's not quite as good as full HD, but it comes pretty close. Also, many newer units are being made with HDMI ports. In other words, the DVD is upconverted, and the result is transmitted over a full HD connection. Best of all, these set-top boxes can be had for under $100.
BTW, the composite video you suggest is simply "standard definition," and not the best SD at that (S-Video is better). Component video (where there are three separate "RCA"-type connectors) is much, much better, but even that doesn't match digital (DVI or HDMI). Also, the DVI-to-HDMI cable you will need can be had at Walmart for around $30. They can also be found at places like Best Buy or CompUSA, but these retailers tend to over-charge for over-blown items (No one needs a "Monster" HDMI cable that costs over $100, and which does no more than the $30 cable from Walmart; digital is digital).

  • Periodic signal loss on DCT700 digital adapter

Our kitchen TV is connected to the FiOS ONT via a basic digital adapter (Motorola DCT700/US). On some TV channels, the sound disappears and the picture freezes for up to a few seconds at regular intervals.
The problem affects only channels 11 through 25, as far as I can tell (I didn't try every single one!). It occurs at the top of every minute, at the instant when the on-screen clock display rolls over to the next minute. Sometimes the event lasts for only a second or so, in which case the sound resumes and the picture unfreezes after the interruption. If the signal loss persists for longer, I get a gray screen with a message that "the channel is having technical difficulties" before the program resumes. Either way, it's very annoying.
If I'm watching the same channel via the SD set-top box in the living room, or via either of the CableCards in the TiVo DVR, there is no interruption of sound or picture.
The DCT700 was installed and activated by the Verizon rep as part of my FiOS installation two weeks ago. I don't recall the problem showing up when he performed his final checkup before leaving, but it's possible we chose channels outside the range mentioned above and/or weren't watching the TV during the fairly short time interval during which the problem occurs.
I tried disconnecting the power adapter from the DCT700 for about a minute, but the problem was still present after the DCT700 restarted.

I pulled the plug and re-plugged all 3 adapters and none of them show a channel number.  Very odd.  And none of the of the manuals even reference the problem to find out how to correct it.
Do you have any idea why I'm not getting channels like CNN?  Am I supposed to be getting channels like CNN?
The "trick" of unplugging should resolve the channel display issue (it only shows up for a short period in the bottom left of the TV screen immediately after changing channels).
As Matcarl said, if you are not getting all the SD channels you are subscribed to you need to contact Verizon as the boxes have apparently not been provisioned correctly.

  • ElGato's eyeTV 250?

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for a way transfer my VHS tapes onto DVDs. I also want to record from TV if possible. I have been suggested to try eyeTV 250 by Apple. I am looking for good video quality. Can anyone who has used it provide me with some feedback? How is the output quality? are the videos full screen?
    Feedback is much appreciated.
    Rio.

I use EyeTV 500 all the time and have transferred about 300 tapes. Quality is dependent on the quality of your VHS tape. You can select progressive scan and that gives a bit better improvement over the quality of the original VHS. You can edit them easily enough then export to various formats (avi, mp4, dvd). Make sure you have Toast to burn to DVD and a fast cpu (3ghz). A one hour VHS takes up about 2 gig space.
I highly recommend the product and the procedure. I try and copy a tape every other day or so and if you have a large collection you can transfer everything over a period of a few months.

  • I have a airport extreme as my base station. I am experiencing a large signal loss in a particular room. Will an airport express restore that signal? l

I have an airport extreme base station. Experiencing large signal loss in a particular room. Will an airport express, placed in that room, restore the signal? Thanks, Glenn.

The Express can only "extend" the bandwidth of the wireless signal that it receives.
So, you would not want to place the Express in the same room where you need more signal, you would want to locate the Express approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage.

  • Third party router signal loss?

I have an iMac G5 and connect wirelessy to the internet with a 2Wire router which is in another room (hooked up to my laptop). For the most part I have no problems (I did have to get rid of a 2.4 GHz phone which was in the same room with the router) but occasionally I get signal loss.
Is it possible that my neighbor is stealing my signal? Or could it be their phone? I don't have baby monitors, satellite dish etc.

Is it possible that my neighbor is stealing my signal?
That wouldn't cause a signal loss.
It could be interference from any device that operates at 2.4 GHz.
Have you tried changing the channel used by your base station? Keep changing the channel until you find one that works or you run out of channels.

  • Eyetv 250 Program Guide

Hello, I have just purchased an Elgato Eyetv 250. I'm wondering how, or if, I can connect into my Rogers Cable TV program guide (Canada).
Could someone please help me with this? I need to decide whether or not to take the unit back to the store within a number of days.
    Thanks,
    DragonflySue

I don't even know where to direct you since neither of the things you mention are Apple products.
    The iMac forum maybe?

  • Canopus ADVC300 vs Elgato Eyetv 250 for A to D video conversion

I need to digitize several shelves of old commercial and homemade VHS tapes and convert to DVD with iMovie/iDVD and Toast (I use iMovie 6). I have looked at the Canopus ADVC300 and Elgato Eyetv 250.
Would someone comment on how these 2 devices compare regarding quality, ease of use AV synch etc. Are there other products I should be considering.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Cannot comment on either, BUT:
I use the Canopus ADVC110 which does a superb job - and is cheaper than the 300!
AFAIK the Elgato is a TV tuner and recorder, but not a converter to DV that iMovie can use.

  • Sudden signal loss..???

Very frustrating signal loss every 4-6 minutes with my Airport Extreme card in my 12" PB!
Using Linksys WRT54G wireless router. When I have a signal I get 10 to 15 bars then suddenly nothing! It spontaneously reconnects.
I have tried different channels, my SSID is set to "broadcast" and I don't have a 2.4ghz phone in the house and my neighbors are a distance away so other phones would not be a factor.
    What could be the problem?

Microwave ovens: Placing your computer or an AirPort Base Station near a microwave oven that is in use may cause interference.
No, it happens when microwave not in use.
Direct Satellite Service (DSS) RF leakage: The coax cable that came with certain types of satellite dishes may cause interference. Obtain newer cables if you suspect RF leakage.
I do have DSS but the system but it is brand new, a year old and was present when I had the other notebooks.
Certain electrical devices such as power lines, electrical railroad tracks, and power stations.
    None nearby
2.4 GHz phones: A cordless telephone that operates in this range may cause interference with AirPort communication when used. There are also other devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz range that could cause interference.
No 2.4GHz devices in the house.
Metal objects: If possible, move metal objects or change the placement of the Base Station so the path between your AirPort equipped-computer and the Base Station is free from metal objects that may cause interference.
No major metal objects in the path.
X-10 video senders (transmitters/receivers) that operate in the 2.4 GHz bandwidth.
Any other devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz bandwidth (microwaves, cameras, baby monitors, and so on).
None in the house in operation.
