F5 and F6 keys (MacBook Pro) do not adjust screen brightness after upgrade to OS X Lion

Hi All,
since "upgrading" my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion, the F5 and F6 keys for adjusting the monitor brightness do not work anymore! No matter how I set the settings for the monitor, the keys do not work.
Sometimes, the MacBook now just uses a low brightness and the only way to modify this is to open the system settings and change it there.
Does anyone know how to fix this so that it works properly (like in Snow Leopard) ?

The screen brightness adjustment is F1 and F2.
You can also adjust in System Preferences > Displays.

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Repair

If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Now that you mentioned it, that might be the source of the problem. Something was definitely wrong with my graphics card before the incident happened. You mean that particular batch of graphics cards had some inherent issues, right? I went to the genius bar, and the 'genius' there, without trying to diagnose the problem properly, just adviced me to buy a new mbp! He said Apple will no longer try to fix or touch macs older than 5 yrs. Mine is 5.5 yrs old...

I learned that the Dock is positioned at the chosen edge of whatever Display is positioned farthest to that side. E.g. for the Dock to be positioned on the right side of the Cinema Display (instead of the right side of the MacBook), the Cinema Display must be oriented (by dragging) to the right of the MacBook monitor on the "Arrangement" tab of the Displays Preference Panel.

MacBook Pro mid-2012 running very slowly after upgrade to Yosemite

Problem description:
MacBook Pro mid-2012 - installed Yosemite, and the system now crawls. Webpages have very delayed responses, can take 30+ seconds to react to typing or selection. I turned off FileVault, that did not appear to help. Emptied the trash, removed some obsolete fonts. Any help for what else to try would be much appreciated.

Did you install the VAP (value added package) provided with Toshiba Win 8 upgrade assistant?
Its necessary and the brightness can be controlled pressing F button
F2 Decreases screen brightness
F3 Increases screen brightness

Deleted all .kext files and now my macbook pro would not switch on. What do I need to do?

By mistake I deleted all .kext files in the extensions folder and now the macbook will not go past the error screen at the start up with panic kernel. What do I need to do? How do I restore from back up drive or even re install OS???

Are you able to get into Recovery Mode (Command+R) at startup?
If your back up is a Time Machine back up you can boot from it by restarting while holding the Option key and select the back up drive. From there you can reinstall OS X Mavericks or Restore.

Macbook pro did not wake up until after SMC

I put my Macbook pro 13 (retina, late 2013) to sleep. But, after a minute or so, when I tried to wake it up by pressing any button, it did not work. I thought it's dead. But, I checked up Apple support website and did an SMC reset, after which it worked again. So as I write this, it is working. Do I need to take it to Apple Store ? Is this a problem with a 2 month old computer ? Did it ever happen with your retina macbook ?

Is there some general maintenance that you have to do on a mac to be trouble free, like you do disk cleanup etc in Windows? One of the reasons I switched to a Mac was to have reliability, but does not seem like it is really different from a pc. I see the same software issues sometimes - like something not responding, or some bug. Now after a few months, crashes also. Is it just me, or is the fact that macs are more reliable than pcs fanboyish stuff ?

I upgraded my 2013 MacBook Pro to Yosemite last night, but I encountered a problem when I tried booting up this morning. Whenever I turn my MacBook on, the progress bar slowly begins to load, and then it disappears and I see a grey circle with a slash through it, like a "not allowed" sign. First gen Macbook pro will not turn back on after grey screen of death

Hi, i have a first generation Macbook Pro. As i was browsing the web, my computer all the sudden froze and the "grey screen of death" appeared and shut of my computer. After, it tried to restart, but it wont get past the CD rom or hard drive noise it makes once you press the power button. I hear the noise fully cycle once, then it restarts the noise and keeps skipping. Once its done, the computer IS on, but the screen is black and I cannot do anything. Please help! Ive never dealt with thins kind of problem and Im sort of a noob with computers. Is the computer fried? It is after all 7 years old, and I use it daily.

After the startup sound (be precise) after the sound press the shift Key until the apple appear.
If that wont work. Try an SMC reset

Macbook Pro Fans Not Adjusting

I have a 17' Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz with 4GB SDRAM. Right now it is running at 61 degrees Celsius and the fans remain at 2000rpm. They always remain at 2000rpm regardless of CPU load. The only time they increase is when I charge the MBP. I just completely reinstalled OS X 10.4, everything is essentially brand new. What do I do about this? I took it into the Genius Bar and they said they couldn't replicate the problem so I have no idea what needs to be done.

If some process is running out of control in the background, temps can rise as well as using up more battery capacity.
Another option is to download and install SMCfancontrol v2.1.2 (freeware). It lets you configure a higher fan idle speed. I have it on my MBP and set to idle the fans at 2250 rpm. This gives the cooling system a headstart on moving air, and there is an easily accessible icon in the menu bar that lets you temporarily bump the speed higher. I find that function useful after I've been watching podcasts (video seems to run up the temps) and want to close the lid but not on a hot keyboard. I pop up the speed to about 4000 rpm and the the temps come down pretty fast.
The MBP is said to tolerate temps up to 100°C (212°F) before shutting down; you have quite a ways to go.

Apple MacBook Pro 15 " 2.4iC2D/2x1Gb/160Gb/256V, 07-02-2008, always properly updated.
Lately Iphoto worked slow and stuck many times. After ugrade from Maverick to Yosemite had to upgrade IPhoto as well.
After that the laptop started 2 or 3 times, after that it showed me a black screen.
I succeeded to connect with a firewire cable the laptop to my Mac and could look into the laptop.
Unfortunately there was a power break, and I don't succeed in reconnecting.
The laptop stays warm and I hear (I suppose) the hard disk.
What to do? I want to find my fotos and put them on the Mac.

I went to apple today and they told me that the hard drive has unmounted itself. They have my macbook right now and they said they're going to replace the wire that connects the hard drive to the logic board and see if this solves the issue. If it doesn't work they will replace the existing 250GB hard drive in my macbook with a 500GB as they no longer make that size hard drives (cost of £130 for the replacement). The problem is that i dont have my macbook backed up so will there be anyway to get data off the od hard drive?

Macbook pro will not display screen when turned on

Can someone please help me figure out the issue I am having with my Macbook Pro I got it late 2008 or early 2009. Never had an issue with it till about 6 months ago. When I turned it off and then turned it back on again later it would always display a black screen even though i could hear it running. I did everything I could think of to make it turn on completely. I would completely charge the laptop, I would repeativly take the battery out and put t back in ect. Most the time it would turn on after a few times of doing something like that. But ever since it started happening it has taken longer and longer for it to decide to turn on completely. So usally never turn it off, but sometimes i drain the battery and donj't have a chance to plug it before it turns itself off.
I use it for work as a graphic designer and the tec company that the company uses offered to take a look at it. ( They are a PC company) . It so happened that one of the guys that works there has a macbook pro around the same age ect. He suggested that i replace my battery so we did. He said that his macbook started to do the same thing and that he had no other choice but to get the motherboard replaced. Is that what I have to do too? I use this coputer for all of my work so I need to have it back in a reasonable amount of time. What should I do to get the problem fixed? What are the steps I should take to ensure that the problem is takem care of?
