F90 ENDFILE behavior

Question

Using Forte6/U2 (with patch 111690-08) on Solaris 8
The following code should end up with an empty file
but does not. Open a sequential file, write some stuff, later rewind and put EOF at the start position.
On PC, IBM AIX and Tru64, I end up with a file of zero bytes. Sun Forte doesn't work the same way. The ENDFILE does not truncate the file and all the stuff previously written is retained. Anybody have any ideas if this is a known bug?

do i=1,10
write(01,10) "jbjbjbjbjbjbjbjbjbjb"
10 format (a20)
end do
rewind 01
endfile 01
stop
end

Thanks. That's close, but then I went one step further to eliminate the single blank character.
rewind
write a null character
backspace
endfile
Then the file is empty as it should be.
open ( unit=01, file="test.dat" )
do i=1,10
write(01,10) "jbjbjbjbjbjbjbjbjbjb"
10 format (a20)
end do
rewind 01
write(01, 11) char(0)
backspace 01
endfile 01
11 format(a1,$)
stop
end
That solves the problem for now, but it's still a messy kluge and I suppose upgrading the compiler is the real answer.
