Fade to black, what is SLUG

Probably some simpleminded questions: Is it possible merely to fade to black in FCE? Not fade out/fade in. Also, what is SLUG? Also, while I'm at it, what is the function of the SEQUENCE icon in the Browser window? At the moment, it seems to me to be useless and permanently empty. Thanks.

*Fade to black* ... yes, numerous ways. Simplest is to place a keyframe on the opacity overlay line in the clip where you want the fadeout to begin and then drag the endpoint of the opacity line down to the bottom of the clip.
Slug ... is a special generator that creates a blank clip. Default is black, but you can change the color to anything you want. Also includes 1 pair of blank audio tracks.
Sequence ... that's what you are editing in (the timeline). Delete that sequence icon and you will lose your entire timeline.
Based on your questions, I highly recommend some basic training such as Tom Wolsky's excellent book, Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop

  • After screen replacement, top half of screen starts by looking normal but then fades to black while bottom half stays bright but with images blury. What might went wrong?

A friend recently gave me their old Macbook pro 15 because they broke the screen and the Apple store quoted them $500-600 to fix it. I looked online and bought a screen of ebay for $170 in hopes of fixing it myself. After getting the screen I hooked it up using the steps I found online. Sadly when I turned it on, the top half of the screen was working apparently normally, but then it faded to black. The bottom half stayed bright with color the whole time but the images were always blurred. When I close the screen with it on, then open it after turning the computer on, the top half lights up with my desktop images as if it is working fine but then fades to black. The bottom is still blurred the whole time. What all could be wrong? Display cable, Inverter cable, not registering the screen or something, the screen is bad? I don't now a ton about all this and I have learned most of what I know from online research. I am not sure if I should send the screen back or if there is another issue. I just want to fix this thing.

Unfortunately, you don't even know the lower half of the computer is working properly, because you didn't have it until after it had been abused. So forget the attached screen for the moment. Connect an external monitor to it, fire it up, and see whether you can get a usable image on the external screen. If you can, send the defective "new" screen back for a refund, or replace the LVDS video cable first to make sure that's not where the problem lies, and if it isn't, then resort to sending the screen back. If you can't get a good image on the external, give the junk machine back to your friend and walk away.

  • Why is it, if i have one video clip in the timeline, i can't just add a transition at the end of that solo clip to fade to black!?! please help!

hey there, so im making a video for a family event..
i drag in an audio clip all of a sudden this becomes the be all and end all, and i want to sync some vid clips to that audio track, so let's say i drag in a 10 second video clip, at the end of the 10 seconds, i want to add a transition to fade to black.. i go to the transition window.. choose the cross dissolve or fade to colour, but it will not allow me to drag it on that video clip.. it always ends up on the audio track. this bloody application is so confusing compared to final cut. please help!

Ahhh, now I see the problem, Grasshopper.  Problem is, we are all Grasshoppers, here.
Yes, that little piece of info is critical. I'd say the biggest difficulty with FCPX is the whole new language.
If I read you correctly, your Audio is in the Main Storyline (Track 1 in plain old Editorese). This makes anything else you add (above or below) a "connected clip", which we can no longer think of as "Track 2" because Jobs sez so. So, yes, you cannot just add a transition to either end of a connected clip.
No argument with Tracy's solution, because I haven't seen any other general solution presented for any attempt to treat connected clips as the main storyline.  And, of course, when they were "track 1" and "track 2", you could.
An alternative solution, however, is to highlight the connected clip and press Ctrl-V to bring up the Video Animation Editor.  Click the "reveal button" for Compositing: Opacity (bottom, right).  Once open, there is a "fade handle" to the right top.  Drag it left for however much fade you wish.  (there is one on the left as well, but you were only talking about a fade-out.)
A second alternative, perhaps for future projects where everything keys on audio, may be to create a Gap clip (used to be called slug) in the primary storyline before ever dropping in the audio.  Then you can add video to the main story line and modify it without having to go thru hoops to do the simplest thing.

  • Why can't I use the fade to black and white option in iMovie '11?

I have a project that uses a few photos with one minute duration timers I want to slowly fade from color to black and white but the fade to options are all greyed out... Am I over looking something or doing something wrong?

    Exiled Angel wrote:
....it's the color in the pictures I want to gradually reduce the saturation on until they are black and white before the transitions start, not fade in or out to a black or white screen like you are suggesting.
Sorry, but I wasn't suggesting that you use Fade to Black or Fade to White, just explaining what they do, given that you used the term "fade" in your first post. I assumed you may have been using the Fade to Black transition (which won't achieve what you want).
I suggested that you use Cross Dissolve, but I need to explain further how to achieve the effect you are looking for. First, you need to place a copy of the photo directly after the original. Make sure Ken Burns is turned off - use Fit. Now double-click on the copy to bring up the Clip Inspector. Click on Effects and select Black & White, then click Done. Drag a Cross Dissolve transition between the 2 clips (photos) and adjust the duration to your liking in the Inspector. Now you will see the effect your are looking for.
The key is to have an exact copy of the photo following the original, then change the copy to Black and White (or Sepia or any other effect), then insert the Cross Dissolve (or Cross Blur etc.) transition.
Hope that''s what you are looking for!

  • Fade to black doesn't end completely in black

This is driving me crazy. I've been using IMovie for years but first time on this new G4 laptop with IMovieHD. In a new project with clips in the timeline the scrubber won't extend to the very end of the clip. A fade to black doesn't end in black because when you zoom in the whole way on the scrubber bar you can't extend the scrubber the last sixteenth of an inch or so. This is screwing up fades and transitions. Anybody else seen this? I'm begging someone to respond. My second time posting this.

    Okay, just tried this myself.
    I see what you mean.
    Try this:
At the end of your movie:
Put a blank title after the fade out. This gives the playhead somewhere to go and your fade will go all the way to black.
    OR
In the middle of your movie:
Push the clips (transition included) appart so there's a little space between them. You should now see your transition fade all the way to black.

  • Fade to black at the end

    Hi all
I've started to use Motion 5 for a few weeks now but I'm kinda stuck on how to fade to black on a project. Ok it's a
Motion 5 project (built in the program) called "Atmospheric - lower third" in the "Composition" section and I want to do a
5 sec fade to black. I added about 5 sec to the 20 sec project making it 25 sec and I don't find a fading FX in the program.
There IS a fade in and fade out together but I just want a fad out and how can I make it work?? I know I still need allot of
practice with this program and I intend to get Lynda video tutorials soon but I need to to this now for next week and I have
no idea what to do to make a good fade out. If it can't be done with this program can I export it to final cut X and do a fade
there? Any help would be very welcomed!!!!
    THANKS!!!
    Serge

The easiest thing to do is add a Color Solid:
Press the Generators button at the bottom right of the canvas and select Generators > Color Solid. This gives you a specialized shape that automatically fills the canvas with color. Set the Color (in the inspector) to Black.
Select the Properties tab and in the Blending section, set the Opacity to 0%
Right click on the word "Opacity" and from the popup menu, select Parameter Behaviors > Ramp
In the Behaviors inspector > Ramp, set the Start Value to 0% and the End Value to 100%
Move the playhead in the mini Timeline to the place where you want the "fade out" to start.
The Motion 5 Help window tends to be a little slow - and too in the way for me, so I have an online copy bookmarked for viewing in my browser here:
    http://help.apple.com/motion/mac/5.0/en/motion/usermanual/
unfortunately, this version is not searchable, so I also keep the Motion 4 user manual bookmarked here:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/motion/usermanual/index.html
This version IS searchable. Keep in mind that Motion 4 and Motion 5 do not "look" the same. However, everything in the Motion 4 documentation (other than placement of icons, etc.) is concurrent with how Motion 5 works (Motion 5 has some new concepts that won't exist in the M4 documentation like Rigs and specialized drop zones that represent media content *in* FCPX.)
If you're okay with dealing with the appearance differences between Motion 5 and earlier versions, here is a good source for basic "practice" exercises (skip the ones on "Round-Tripping" -- that no longer applies to M5/FCPX): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB7982C0260F090C1
    More here:
    http://www.applemotion.net/macbreak-studio/
And some pretty advanced tutorials here:
    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeZvvhzFi_ZxWbzZ5bhJ45QWzPHQ3Y5qy
All together, probably a better education than you'd get from Lynda.com and they're all free.

  • Audio cuts off during fade to black transition

After completing my movie, I tried to add a simple fade in at the very beginning and a fade out at the end. The video image fades fine but the audio is off altogether during both transitions.
What's weird is that if I look at the audio track in the precision editor, it looks like it fades in and out perfectly with the video.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Any takers? I'd be very keen to learn how to do this as well.
I have a "fade to black" at the end of my movie but I don't want the audio to fade until the end of the clip.

  • How do I fade to black in a slideshow?

It's been years since I've used Flash, so I'm a bit rusty.
But I am trying to use the slideshow presentation template and do
transitions between the slides, but I'm not getting the results I
    want.
I'm putting in the preset behaviors for fade in and out, and
what I get is a crossfade. What I want is a fade to black, and a
fade up from black (a dip to black), and not a crossfade. Is there
a simple scripting way to do this that I can put on the
presentation (master) slide? If been playing with setInterval to
delay the transition but I can't get it to work. Thanks.

Add a "Fade Through Black" transition after your last clip.
For the volume fade, you can drag the Fade handles.
See this video for details. (Click on All New Audio Editing)

Then it just turned on like it supposed to, a few hours later it happened again. it all happened yesterday. then today i got on itunes to restore the phone to see if it works better then then while it was syncrnizing eerything into the phone it happened once again. i really dont know what to do! has anyone had the same or a similar problem? would it work if i just restore it and just make it a "new" phone ?
sorry my grammer isnt the best lol

While in the B/W desktop go to the System/Accessability preference pane and check to see if this checkbox is selected:
If it isn't toggle it on and then off again and see if there's any change.

  • Bad Quality of Fade to black

    Hi everybody!
I have a problem with Encore/Premiere Pro CS3. I created a sequence in Premiere and send it via "Export to encore" to Encore. It was a DV movie and I chose "PAL High Quality" for the convertion.
Most of the video is fine but when there is a fade to black or a fade in from black the video is some kind of blurred!
Is there any way how I can solve this problem?
    Looking forward to your suggestions!
    Cheers,
    Madlog

Please tell us about your CS3 Project, and the Assets that you are using.
Are you only adding the Dip-to-Black Transition, or are you doing Opacity Keyframing?
What happens if you Export as DV-AVI and Import that into Encore, letting it do the Transcoding?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Toshiba Regza fades to black

I have a 42" Toshiba Regza about five years old.  Recently, when I turn it on the picture shows for a second and then fades to black.  The audio still works during this time.  I turn it off and on a few times and finally the picture stays.  Anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?  I've unplugged and replugged everything with no luck.  Thanks!

I'm not sure what would cause this, but you may want to reset the TV to factory settings if that's an option in the menu. Then (even if it isn't an option), turn the TV off and unplug it from power over night. If the problem persists, it may need servicing.

  • Fade Through Black Transition Not Displaying Properly

Greetings all. I have imported my movie clips into iMovie '08. Each of the clips plays fine by themselves as well as when edited and combined in my project. The problem arrises when I try to add a Fade Through Black (or any transition for that matter) between the clips. Since the transition I'm interested in is the Fade Through Black that's the one I'm going to continue to reference as my transition. When I scrub the cursor across the transition it displays perfectly in the preview window. However, when I try to play the movie it doesn't fade to black it just jumps to black, and doesn't come out of black for several seconds (much longer than my duration). Any suggestions on what to try would be most appreciated. Thank you and have a good night.

This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
You'll need to reset some Preferences.

  • Easy way to "fade to black" ?

What is the easy or best way to fade out at the end of a clip/scene? Doesn't seem to be that option in the edit drop down list.

Use the Fade Through Black Transition in the Transitions pane.
Put it between two clips to Fade through black. Put it at the beginning or end of your movie to fade in or fade out.
