Faded Screen

Here is the short story:
I have a 2 17" powerbooks which I bought from an auction site. The first which I have been using is a 1ghz which works fine except for no bluetooth, internal airport and being the first model the USB is only 1.1.
My new one is a 1.5ghz but has a broken screen, but every other component works fine. So I have removed the screen from the 1 ghz and placed it on the 1.5ghz. The only issue is the display only shows a faint image of the desktop, but if I connect the external screen it works fine.
I thought it was the inverter board but this is inside the bottom bezel of the screen and when connected to my 1ghz model the screen works fine, but when i connect to the 1.5ghz it does not show.
I know the old powerbooks could run from 45 watt power adaptors and the higher spec models require a 65 watt adaptor, but surely if I start from the battery it should show, but no success. I would run a hardware test but as I bought them 2nd hand I have no access to these disks.
I called a company and they said it was the inverter board, but if the display works when connected to my other machine, that can't be unless there is another inverter board I am not aware of.
Can anyone please advise any other steps to resolve this issue.

Hi, DPP_UK. No 17" Powerbook model was ever shipped with a 45W power adapter, though 12" and early 15" models were. Whether using the wrong adapter is actually related in any way to your display problem, I don't know, but you should certainly have a 65W adapter if you don't. Apart from that, I have no suggestions for you.
...as the 1ghz model only has 1.1 usb and does not power external equipment, but with usb 2.0 it should be capeable of conecting hard drives which don't need external power sources.
This is a misunderstanding. Both the USB 1.1 and USB 2 standards provide power to external devices, up to a nominal limit of 500mA. But in all Powerbooks, the amount of power actually provided to connected devices by the USB ports may either be less than 500mA, or may have no margin of safety above that level for devices that demand just a little more. There have been countless posts in these forums about USB devices (especially portable hard drives) that are designed to be powered from a USB port, but don't get the power they need when connected to a Powerbook G4. This has always been just as true of the USB 2-equipped PBs as the earlier USB 1.1 PBs, and has involved every one of the dozens of PB G4 models. I hope it has been remedied in the MacBooks and MacBook Pros.
Of course, whether or not your USB ports put out the power they're supposed to is completely irrelevant to your display issue. I just wanted to correct your misconception about the differences between USB 1.1 and USB 2.

  • Qosmio X300 - Black faded screen if I boot up

    Hello
I recently purchase a Toshiba Qosmio X300-13O. I run before a week the system restore and I install all the drivers. As a result the laptop created a problem, every time I try to boot up a black faded screen apears and then the laptop restarts. Also the iluminted hot keys do not work.
Please help me solve this issue.
    Regard, Aris

Thank you for your help. It was quite useful but it didn't give any results. The good news is that i found the wrong install driver, I tried to uninstall it from safe mode and from normal windows but it didn't allow me to do this. An error message appeared saying that the driver didn't install correctly and i don't have any permission to do that. My opinion is to return windows again in factory settings but i don't want to format my HDD because i am a student and i have a lot of work to back up and restore. If you have more advice to give me that it could be very useful. Thank you again for your help.

  • Macbook wake up - Faded screen and timeline/something's loading.

Recently, I've been having problems waking my macbook. When it does wake, the screen is where it used to be, but the display is faded and there's a timeline at the bottom of the screen like something is being loaded. Then it wakes like normal.

that means your macbook entered a safe sleep or "hibernation" mode while sleeping, that generally occurs when the battery dies while its asleep but can occur at other times as well

  • Pink faded screen displaying google chrome on every gray background iMac

So, I just bought a new iMac earlier this year and today I noticed that I have a problem.
I was browsing on google chrome and I quit google chrome ... Afterwards I opened up photoshop, logic whatever anything with a gray background.
A faded view of the previous page "google chrome" is being displayed in pink visible only over any dark background (pictures attached)
It keeps on showing youtube screen faded in pink
    Description of attached image :
So the attached image is showing Adobe Photoshop, opened up and google chrome was quitted but you can still see pink faded traces of google chrome on any gray background which doesn't want to disappear.
Yesterday this happened again and I switched of my iMac left it off for a few minutes and switched on again. The problem was gone but today the same thing happened ....
Please someone help me as I'm kind of disappointed not to find an apple 24/7 live support

  • White/faded screen...help?

hey guys my sister dropped her 3rd gen ipod touch tonight about 2 feet onto solid ground and now the screen is faded/almost fully white.
i tried pressing the power & hold button to reset but that didnt fix. any suggestions appreciated...

I have the exact same problem! Im such a clumsy clot. Anyway, I was searching up solutions to this impossible problem, and i now know what we must do. Get it fixed. It's completely totalled. We'll have to send it in to the apple store so they can fix it. I recommend calling them first; at 1-800-263-3394. Once they know your problem, they will send an addressed envelope and everything so you can safely ship the ipod to them to fix. they will send it back when they're done. all shipping and handling costs are paid for buy Apple. Hope this helps!

  • To get free replacement+rainbow and faded screen

How do i get a free replacement? Any criteria?
I droppped my ipod touch 4G and now there is a greyish black semi circle with a rainbow edge. Also screen is faded. Would apple fix this in store? Ive made an appointment for genius bar btw. Thanks (((:

Sorry, but even if your warranty is still valid, accidental damage is not covered.  You're gonna have to pay...  Apple does not repari while you wait.  You give them money and your busted iPod, Apple gives you a refurbished device...

  • Pumping, distorting and fading screen leads to freeze

Hi folks, I - or let me say my parents - are having big big problems with their new (1 day old) Mac Mini. Before I get to the details I have to say, that my parents have been Windows-Users all the time and I finally managed to get them to something stable and working, in short: to Mac.
Well, now you know that I'm automatically in deep trouble, when there's something malfunctioning.
To the problem itself: They said (I couldn't take a look by myself yet) that when they played the free variant of FreeCell 3D the screen starts pumping, flickering, fading, colorrotating, and so on ... then all the previous messageboxes, inputboxes and so on appear and finally the Mac Mini freezes totally and really needs to be cut off the powerline cause even the power button is "frozen".
In my opinion it could be a problem with motherboard-integrated graphics-chip.
What do you pros think about that problem??
    Greetz, Didelphodon.

Didelphodon, could you tell us where they got the program that shows this problem? Perhaps there is something wrong with it.
I think you will have to get directly involved with your parents' computer and educating them how to use it. Users coming from Windows to Mac (perhaps against their will) will tend to have incorrect instincts for dealing with simple problems -- which can turn a simple problem into a bigger problem.
For starters, show them how to kill a program that is not responding: Cmd-Option-ESC, which is similar to CTL-ALT-DEL in the PC world.
If they regularly deal with freezes by "pulling the plug", they will soon have a non-functional Mac.
BTW, could you describe for us their hardware set-up, including monitor and all peripherals? And as already been suggested, do they have proper and adequate electrical power for all their equipment?

  • Palm Tungsten E2 screen is fading, screen resolution changed

Since yesterday, the screen of my  Palm Tungsten E2 is fading out, I have hard time to see the Apps on the screen and the writting on Memo or any Apps, all pictures on  media are blurry, it's like the screen resolution has changed, even the introduction Palm 1st screen is un-readable, blurry.
Thank you for any help if there is any.

Hi and welcome to the HP Support Community.
It doesn't sound like it, but maybe the screen brightness changed somehow.  Tap the brightness icon (the little "sun" looking icon in the top right corner of the graffiti area) and adjust the brightness.
Assuming that does nothing, try a soft reset by pressing the Reset button on the back of the device.
As a last resort, you could try a Hard Reset (after making sure you have a backup of everything).
But your description suggests a hardware issue.  You could contact Chris Short at palmdr.com who repairs Palm devices and sells refurbished ones on eBay.
Good luck, hope this helped some.

  • Bought new iMac 20" Faded Screen

I just picked up the new 20" iMac today, to replace my old Core Duo 20" iMac, and when I got everything booted and got to the Desktop I noticed the icons appeared to be faded. I did a side by side comparison with my old iMac and the icons on my old iMac were very Bright in color compared to my new iMac, anyone else having this issue, btw I tried messing with the brightness..

True. The old G5 17" iMac I had bought my folks 2 years ago was awfully bright out of the box, too. But, that isn't exactly the problem here. What you're probably experiencing is the result of the LCD film type Apple has decided to use on their new 20" iMac. If you look at the specs, it only has a viewing angle of 160 degrees which is even worse than the previous 20" model which had a 170 degree viewing angle.
I live in Boon De'Ville (aka: Myrtle Beach), South Carolina and we don't have an Apple Store, so I can't support my opinion yet. But if Apple is using TN film in their new line of iMac LCDs as oppose to IPS film like their Cinema Displays, then you among many others are in a world of disappointment as I once was/am.
If you're a designer or photographer, you'll notice the following…
Looking at your iMac head on, does your display appear darker at top, and washed out at the bottom? Use a solid color for your desktop image. Does it look like a gradient? If so, then most likely the LCD is a TN film-based matrix.
Because of the cheap parts, TN LCDs are produced alot these days. They are total crap and they are everywhere, like Circuit City, Best Buy, Costco, etc. It would be very hard to find an IPS or PVA LCD monitor, unless you go to a specialized tech store.
People need to be educated about this issue. It's serious. Coming from a much older LG (a beautiful IPS LCD), I never expected LCD displays to head in the wrong direction.
According to the specs, I'm guessing the new 24" iMac does not have this fault, since TN film can not display a 178 degree viewing angle. So, I am guessing the 24" iMac uses the same IPS film as their Cinema Display.
My suggestion would be, go to the Apple Store and see for yourself. Kneel down in front of it as if you were viewing it from your desk chair, so you can get a good idea.
For more info on LCD types, do a Google search. This topic is all over. Also check this link out: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/whichscreen1.htm

  • Faded screen and white bars when waking from sleep on mac mini

I just bought a new mac mini. It is the late 2012 version with Mavericks.
When I wake it from sleep, my screen is blurred out and there is a row of little white bars at the bottom for probably 10 seconds before the full screen comes on.
Why is it doing this? Is that normal?
    Thanks

Late-model Macs are configured to enter standby after four hours in sleep while on AC power, in order to comply with a directive of the European Union.
You have three choices. One is to do nothing. Use the machine as designed. That's what I recommend.
The second choice is to disable Power Nap in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. Uncheck the box marked  Enable Power Nap... in each of the tabs. You won't get the wake delay anymore, but you won't get any of the features of Power Nap either.
The third choice is to increase the delay before standby mode is triggered, or to disable standby mode completely. This is an unsupported option and you're on your own as to the consequences. If you choose to go this route, proceed as below. These instructions are for advanced users only.
Back up all data before making any changes.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Drag across the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo pmset –a standbydelay
Don't copy the blank space at the end of the line.
    Launch the Terminal application.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. Press the space bar, then type the delay you want, in seconds. For example, if you want to change the standby delay from the default one hour to eight hours, enter 28800. Don't put commas or other punctuation marks in the number. To disable standby, enter 0 (zero.)
When the command is complete, press return. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. After running it, quit Terminal. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
To disable standby on AC power, enter this command:
    sudo pmset autopoweroff 0
and to revert to the default state,
    sudo pmset autopoweroff 1

  • New version FF3.63 causes a faded screen with script running in the background. I understand it may not be entirely compatible with 64bit units. I was perfectly happy with 3.59 and would like to downgrade, is this possible and how?

I would like to go back to version 3.59. 3.63 is slow and buggy on my unit.

  • Parts of screen appear faded immediately after awakening phone

When I first "awaken" my iPhone from sleep, two vertical bars appear on the unlock screen, near the edge of the phone. On both sides of the battery level indicator when charging. I tried pressing the sleep button a few times very quickly - and this makes the issue even more apparent - a full rectangle (with the edges being the faded screen area) is apparent. The issue resolves itself in a fraction of a second - I can see the color "filling in" the faded area.
Just got this phone as a replacement from a defective iPhone, and haven't seen this problem before.
Is it a defective LCD? Something that could get worse with time? Something that would affect image quality? Its just something that is pretty annoying to see..
    Anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks!

I should add, although this is pretty obvious, this issue isn't apparent if the background is white, but very noticeable if any other color.

  • White Screen of Death Questions [PLEASE HELP!]

If someone actually cares about my issue, they will read all of the following. Let's see how many of you are out here and how many just want to answer simple short questions for reputation.
Okay, so I've ran into my first ever iPod Touch issue. I've never owned an iPhone, but I have had an iPod in the past and know a bit about them. I'm going to be 100% honest and I need a serious answer because I'm upset and angry. If anyone can be bothered to read the following, THANK YOU. If anyone could help me out in any way by giving me suggestions/tips and/or a solution, THANK YOU. But anything that can help is appreciated.
I had my board shorts on when this ocurred. I went to the toilet, doing my own business. I had my iPod Touch in my bank pocket which went to about half way down my thigh. The iPod Touch at the time was facing away from my thigh. Pulling down my pants, the iPod Touch hit the tiled floor. It hardly even hit the floor, all I heard was a little click and I realised it was my iPod. It was flat at the time, I picked it up and pressed the Home button immediately to ensure it was okay. It sort of lit up like a white background, but had a very low opacity. Since it was flat, I assumed it was normal.
Putting my iPod on charge right after my toilet break, I waited and waited for it to charge quickly enough for me to see the screen as I was a little worried not having seen that faded screen before. When the Apple logo was to appear, it gave me a lit up white screen. I was so confused as there were no marks AT ALL on my screen or any other part of the iPod.
NOTE: My iPod is still under warranty.
Did my research and came to the conclusion that it was the infamous 'White Screen of Death'. Where do I go from here? I have no clue!
I have important information such as a To Do list and my Contacts within the iPod. I NEED to retrieve this information. Is there any way I can do this?
I can still use the iPod, as if the screen were showing. Sounds are working, but there is just a blank, lit up white screen. Sometimes when I hold the Home button, On/Off button & the Volume Up buttoon all at the same time for ~10-20 seconds, the Apple logo comes up as if the screen was all fixed. 5 Seconds later, it goes all funny as if there were faded white lines and a faded white background but still being able to see the logo/screen. When the iPod loads, it just goes back to the lit up white screen.
Here's another odd thing to this, when I leave my iPod Touch sitting in a spot remotely, without touching it for a few hours, when I come back to it and hit the Home button, the iPod will begin to work fine as if nothing ever happened. No white screen, no nothing, just simply use it as I wish. I can even sometimes lock it, and then unclock it again with it still showing perfectly. However, when I tend to click the On/Off button after this happens, or if I just continue to use it for ~1 minute, it will eventually do the same as the above paragraph in second last sentence.
    This may be important:
    The iPod charges fine.
The iPod can be used with my computer and iTunes fine.
To sum it all up, everything can be done, including using the iPod, but with a lit up white screen.
Here are some questions I have for you guys:
Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
If they won't, what should I do?
How much would a replacement screen cost?
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
What could be the cause and why?
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
I need this resolved guys. I'm very upset and angry over the whole situation. If a little thump on the tiles like that (it's not like I dropped it or anything) can damage the screen that much, then this devices from Apple can't be very reliable. All I'm asking for is some genuine service/help to resolve my issue. If this can be done, I will be one VERY happy person.
    Daniel

Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
As stated above it is not covered by the warranty as it will be deemed accidental damage.  You can try explaining what happened to somebody at the Genius Bar and they may cut you some slack and replace it at no cost.  They might not though as Apple has started to really come down hard on eliminating replacing accidentally damaged iPods at no cost.
If they won't, what should I do?
Again, bring it into them anyways and explain what happened.  You have nothing to lose either way.  Otherwise, you really only have 2 other options.  Send it to a third party service center to have them take a look at it and possibly repair the iPod, or do some studying online and learn how to open up the device yourself and take a look.  There are some excellent step-by-step repair guides at http://www.ifixit.com/.
How much would a replacement screen cost?
This depends on where or how you have it repaired.  Here is Apple's repair pricing guide.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Third party repair centers will cost less and they'll actually swap out the bad part rather than just replace the entire iPod as Apple does.
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
If you have a warranty on it still, I wouldn't quite yet.  Take it to your local Apple store as explained above.  Otherwise, I would only if you feel comfortable working with small electronics and consider yourself handy with them.
What could be the cause and why?
As stated already, it could be a damaged or loose LCD ribbon cable or the LCD screen itself is damaged.  As to what exact component, there is no way to tell.
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Make a backup of the device in iTunes before taking or sending it in for service or before you decide to open it up (if you do happen to go that route).  See here what is included in the backup of the device.
    iTunes: About iOS backups
If you get a new or replacement device you can restore it from that backup.
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
As I have already stated numerous times, try taking it into your local Apple Store and see if there is anything can do for you such as swap it out.  Remember that they are not obligated to do so since the damage is technically accidental.  Be kind and polite when explaning what happened. You never know what could happen!

  • Brand new Nano: screen fade out?

Brand new Nano...the screen will fade to mostly white, however you can still faintly see the icons and it will operate but the whole screen is covered with the fade out effect that normally is confined to the right edge of artist/album/song names that are too long to fit on screen.
It seems to have happened mainly when it was plugged into the MBP USB slot to charge/sync.
Has anyone seen this? Is this a malfunction that warrants return? Is this normal?

yeah, definitely not normal. I find folks describing white screen with the logo and black screens but no one with this "faded" screen. I can faintly see the controls and they will move, but you can hardly use the thing.
it's going back to BestBuy before the return policy expires. This is the first Apple product I've purchased that has failed to live up to it's expected operation. In that it has failed miserably. So, it will be ditched.

  • Backup problem iPhone 4s iOS 7 & iOS 8

Hello, I've got problems with my iPhone 4s (faded screen etc.), today I'm going to make a complaint. I will receive a new one, so I did a backup with iTunes and iCloud, but as I got iOS 7.1, and the new phone will definitely come upgraded, with iOS 8, would the backup work then?

I have the same question. I test it out and let you know.  iPhone 5s is upgrading to iOS 8 and the icloud back-up is iOS 7.1.2.
I Know for sure there will be problems and i think the best i can do is to downgrade iOS back from 8.0.2 to 7.1.2, restore icloud back-up
and upgrade iOS again  to 8.0.2.
    I Let you know.
