Is  "[failed] com.apple.xprotectupdater.plist" an error that I have to correct ?

This is a fairly basic daemon that should instruct the launcher to open the /usr/libexec/XProtectUpdater utility every 24 hours. You can try loading it manually by running the following command in the Terminal utility (provide your password when prompted--it will not be displayed):
sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.xprotectupdater.plist
The daemon's contents should look like the following text, so locate it in the System > Library > LaunchDaemons folder and compare its contents to the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
          <key>StartInterval</key>
          <integer>86400</integer>
          <key>Label</key>
          <string>com.apple.xprotectupdater</string>
          <key>ProgramArguments</key>
          <array>
                    <string>/usr/libexec/XProtectUpdater</string>
          </array>
          <key>RunAtLoad</key>
          <true/>
</dict>
</plist>
Alternatively you can test the utility being referenced by the daemon by running it directly in the terminal (just copy and paste the following into the Terminal):
/usr/libexec/XProtectUpdater

  • I have 74k  photo's in my iPhoto trash and crashes when emptying. I have tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist but still won't empty.

    Hi! I have 74k photo's in my iPhoto trash and it crashes when trying to empty. Clearly it's too much for the system to handle so after researching I downloaded 'Trashit!' which didn't help even if I selected one photo and dragged it to the trashit icon, not a single photo will delete from the iPhoto trash.
    I've tried creating a new album but the photo's won't drag. I have tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist and done several timely rebuilds but I still can't find a way to empty the trash.  I hope there's something really simple I'm missing here, any help appreciated

    iiPhoto is known to lock up if you try to delete a large number of photos at a time. Here are a couple of ways to get out of the predicament you're in:
    1 -  go into iPhoto's General preference pane and uncheck the Show item counts checkbox:
    and then try emptying the iPhoto Trash bin again. It's iffy however.
    2 - If that fails and you don't use the Rating stars you can do the following: select all of the photos in the trash and Control-click to bringup the contextual menu.  There will be the 5 stars for the ratings.  Select either 5 or 1 to apply that rating to the photos.
    Next create a smart album with the criteria:
    selecting the number of start you applied to those in the Trash bin.
    Move the photos from the Trash bin to the Library and the Smart Album will immediately be populated with those photos.
    You can now select about 100 photos or so at a time and use the Command+Option+Delete key combination to move them back to the Trash bin and empty it.  Repeat with groups of about 100 or so photos till they are all deleted. Then delete the Trash bin in the Dock to completely remove them from your hard drive.

  • How can i get my com.apple.Finder plist back

    If I reinsatll Lion will it put com.apple.Finder plist back in the library

    I just now noticed that if Disk Utility is open a disk shows up on the desktop and I can eject it normally.   Disk Utility does not, however. show the disk and it sometimes really slow to show Super Drive too.  When SuperDrive does show up and there is a disk inserted should I not be able to see in SuperDrive?
    I have tried the terminal thing and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
    What are the options if the optical drive is randomly failing?

  • HT5149 Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found. Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard

    Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps.
    Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard drive at a Mac Authorized Repair.
    Short history of repair and my Final Cut Pro installation:
    1. Macbook Pro stopped working, sendt it for repair. Had the Final Cut Pro installed,
    2. Desided to try a MiniMac and recovered my backup with Time Machine, got the Final Cut Pro working.
    3. Got my Macbook Pro back from repair, did backup on this one as well. But this time only the files not the Applications.
    4. Removed the files as mentioned in HT5149. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found.
    5. When I try to install Final Cut Pro from App Store, it downloads the application as planned. But after download it won´t show in the Application folder nor in the downloads folder, nor will it start an installation prosess. If I pause the installation in App Store, I can see the Final Cut Pro icon in my Dock. (But, as mentioned, after installation it won´t show neither here or in the Applications folder).
    Any suggestions on what I should try now?
    Thanks for any reply, I´m in deep water here...

    Sounds like there is a file you're not getting.  Never do a removal manually.  It's so time consuming and a pain.  There's a very easy and fast way to do this, safely, properly.
    Get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com), use this to remove FCP X.
    Reboot the Mac.
    Download from scratch.
    If you're not seeing FCP X in your app folder, run Disk Utility to Repair all drives.
    If that doesn't help, try running Disk Warrior from Altsoft to repair the directories on all drives.

  • Exception for syslogd in com.apple.alf.plist doesn't work after 10.5.6 upgd

    (This is cross-posted from the 10.5 Ins and Setup forum [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8902103#8902103], per the suggestion of a reader.)
    In 10.5.4, I added /usr/sbin/syslogd to the exception list in /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/com.apple.alf.plist.
    This allowed me to keep the mediocre application firewall set to "allow only essential services" and still allow my router to send syslog messages to a log on my Mac.
    I upgraded to 10.5.6 (straight from 10.5.4). Since the upgrade, it appears that the application firewall ignores the additional exception entry I added.
    I've tried moving the exception entry up (replacing the one for configd), but it doesn't matter. I already know about /Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist, so you don't need to suggest that I delete it. It's re-created (as a binary) each time you unload/load the launchctl for syslogd, and it does appear to use the file in /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/com.apple.alf.plist.
    The only two ways I've found to allow syslogd through are:
    1. disable the app firewall (choose "allow all incoming connections" (not my preferred solution)
    2. choose "set access for specific services and applications", which unfortunately allows all the specified applications (and probably allows Apple's hidden list of exceptions that includes things like World of Warcraft and Skype). The hidden list opens the machine to a greater number of attacks from trojan software, and I'd rather have the system locked down, not opened up.
    Does anyone know how I can recover the 10.5.4 functionality, which allowed me to add syslogd as an exception, instead of adding it to the GUI list of applications?

    I also want to receive log information from my Draytek Router I found a reference in the Draytek forum see:
    http://www.forum.draytek.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=12009&highlight=syslog+mac
    however when I updated the
    com.apple.syslogd.plist
    the required information did not get thru to the Draytek Syslog program.
    I am also using 10.5.6

  • Mail wont launch at all. Deleted this: ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

    Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.

    Hi Bill,
    You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.
    Hope that helps!

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I don't seem to have the "com.apple.garageband.plist" file that has been a common solution. Any suggestions?

    After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I've read through several posts that all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist. Any solutions or suggestions?

    Did you upgrade from SnowLeopard?
    I can't get passed the complete installation
    What exactly is happening? Is GarageBand trying to download over and over again?
    all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist.
    The property list stores your preferences, but also the settings from the last run of the application.  If that file is corrupted in some way, you might see third behaviour.
    You must have this file, for it will be recreated automatically, if it is missing, or you have a permissions problem with your user library.
    Perhaps you did look in he wrong place.
    in MacOS 10.7. or later the User Library is hidden. To find the Preferences Files use the Finder's "Go" menu:
    Quit GarageBand, if it is running.
    Click onto you Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
    In the Finder Menu press "Go" and hold down the "option/alt" key, until your user library appears in the drop-down menu
    Select "Library" and in the Finder window that opens navigate to the "Prederences" folder; move com.apple.garageband.plist to the Desktop.
    Log off and on again (don't skip that step!). Retry GarageBand and see if it GarageBand is now downloading the missing content properly.
    If that does not fix the problem, post back and explain in more detail what the download problem is.
    Why did you "repurchase" GarageBand? If you already owned GarageBand '11, it should be unnecessary.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • ICal refusing to open (com.apple.ical.plist file missing)

    I have tried opening iCal and it refuses to open. The icon bounces on the dock, then asks if I want to report the issue to Apple. I have reported multiple times but I don't know how reporting it will help my iCal work again. (See below the dashed line for the error report.)
    Since then, I have tried to replace iCal, but the software claims it cannot be installed on this machine.
    I have tried to update my current iCal, but no updates are available.
    I have browsed the forums and saw that some solutions were if HelveticaNeue was missing from my fonts. Got it.
    And then I saw some threads about refreshing the com.apple.ical.plist... That's a problem. I don't have that file in my library at all. I can't seem to find any way to get it either. What can I do?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    I would suggest using optional install to reload iCal from your installation disks, then download the combo update for your machine and run. Then see will iCal start. If it doesn't, use console.app to see what error messages it reports.
    com.apple.ical.plist... That's a problem. I don't have that file in my library at all. I can't seem to find any way to get it either.
    It is created by iCal when it runs.

    thanks

    System files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.

  • After i had my hard drive replaced, i've gone to get my old emails and am unable to find them on time machine. The file com.apple.mail.plist isn't there. HELP!

    Pretty sure this will be some sort of user error, but i'm lost.
    I had to have my hard drive replaced, so before taking it to the genius bar, i backed up using time machine. I'd had issues with trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner previously so had formatted the external drive before doing time machine. TM seemed to work fine and copied what looked to be everything. Once i'd got the new hard drive in and went to restore everything, when i looked for the file i need to get to apparently get my mails back (Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist) it's not there.
    Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.
    J

    Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
    Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
    Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
    Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
    When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

    Any wise wisdom?
    Thanks, Chris.

    The .plist files are almost always preferences. I believe "plist" is short for "property list". It contains a list of keys (configuration options) and settings for each key, similar in some respects to the way the Windows Registry works, except that there is a separate file for each set of settings, instead of a single registry file as in Windows. In this case it's a shared settings file for Mail, but I couldn't tell you anything more about the contents.
    You were smart to back it up. Usually .plist files can be deleted without signicant loss, because they will be recreated automatically with default settings. But sometimes they contain important settings that may be hard to set up again, especially if you had help setting up your computer in the first place, or have lost important details that you'd need for setting up an app, such as Mail. But sometimes the settings are trivial, for example the position and size of windows, etc., and do not contain settings you'd care about, which may be in another .plist file or in some other kind of file/database.

  • Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist---Should be 80, group is 0

    I am new to the Mac world, so please bear with me.  I have freeze up issues with beachballs delux on my mid 2011 21.5 iMac with 2.5 GHz Intel Core I5 processor. When I run repairing permissions, it resolves the problem for a few days, but then returns back to the same problem.   It says "Library/Preferences?Com.apple.alf.plist.     Should be 80, group is 0
    Can anyone tell me how to resolve this freeze up problems?  I origiginally had Lion operating system and when I upgraded to Mountain Lion the issue was better, but did not totally cure this.

    The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
    Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Group differs on "Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist";

    As the title suggests I got this issue which is annoying because it is causing high inactive memory & this obstacles all the rest . Means I must do 2-3 times a day repair permissions with Disk Utility .
    Group differs on “Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist”;
    It gets repaired & then all over again . So far I could not find a solution . I have already sent feedback to Apple .
    That's all folks , if anyone knows how to handle this it would be nice , at least until there is an official response .
    Thank you , have a nice day .

    bump
    I actually have this all the time. com.apple.alf.plist is always repaired whenever Disk Utility repairs permissions.
    I also came across somewhere that it was included in the solution for a problem about iTunes requesting permission to access internet everytime it is launched. And I had that issue as well. (iTunes asks for my permission for internet access everytime I launch it.) And the solution proposed for this included the deletion of this "com.apple.alf.plist" regarding a firewall issue. Although I deleted the file, Disk Utility still repairs this file (though iTunes haven't yet asked for internet permissions.) everytime I run the permission repair.
    I suppose there has got to be a solution to keep the file stable, like without causing the repair.
    Not a big issue, as mentioned in the thread title; but still, this may be the cause or result of something going on in the computer; so any suggestions are welcome.
    Cheers!

  • Can't find com.apple.desktop.plist file in Preferences folder.

    I have three desktop spaces, and I have them randomly changing backgroud from a selection of pictures in a folder. To quickly find out which picture was currently use for each desktop, I have a AppleScript that returns some infomation within the com.apple.desktop.plist file. This has been working perfectly fine in Mountain Lion.
    However, after I installed the Mavericks (clean install from scratch), my script no longer works. The background images can be changed as before, but there's no com.apple.desktop.plist file exist anywhere in my hard drive.
    Does anyone run into similar problems as me? It's driving me nuts! I can't think of any reason that there shouldn't be such a file... Thank you very much!

    The returned file name from your terminal command "sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db '.dump' | grep jpg" is the file name of my current desktop picture "Earth and Moon.jpg".
    The returned file names from your script:
    set theResult to "Space 1 Wallpaper: ~/Pictures/Background/" & (do shell script"sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\\ Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db \"SELECT data.value FROM preferences INNER JOIN data on preferences.key=16 and preferences.picture_id=3 and preferences.data_id=data.ROWID\"") & "
    Space 2 Wallpaper: ~/Pictures/Background/" & (do shell script "sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\\ Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db \"SELECT data.value FROM preferences INNER JOIN data on preferences.key=16 and preferences.picture_id=5 and preferences.data_id=data.ROWID\"") & "
    Space 3 Wallpaper: ~/Pictures/Background/" & (do shell script "sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\\ Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db \"SELECT data.value FROM preferences INNER JOIN data on preferences.key=16 and preferences.picture_id=7 and preferences.data_id=data.ROWID\"")
    display dialog theResult buttons {"Done"} default button 1
    are
    Space 1 Wallpaper: ~/Pictures/Background/3439B
    Space 2 Wallpaper: ~/Pictures/Background/5244B
    Space 3 Wallpaper: ~/Pictures/Background/5244B
    The return from your terminal command "find ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library.photolibrary/Masters -name filename.jpg" is
    find: /Users/Peter/Pictures/iPhoto Library.photolibrary/Masters: No such file or directory
    The return from your terminal command "
    readlink -f ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.desktop/69730752/DSKiPhotoRootSource-allPhotosAlbum/9419B" is
    readlink: illegal option -- f
    usage: readlink [-n] [file ...]
    I do have a little app (Script) which did exactly what I needed under OS X Mountain Lion but because under Mavericks Apple changed the location of the wallpaper information to a SQLite database this app is not working anymore. I could send you this app if you want but I do not know how to do this via this forum.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Where have my "com.apple.spotlist.plist" preferences gone???

    Hi,
    I was going to trash "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.spotlight.plist" in an attempt to solve a privacy list issue, but they are not there. I am looking in the correct folder(ie my home library etc) and have restarted a few times but they still don't appear... can anyone offer any help? Thank You.

    You're looking in the right place. Many prefs are created lazily, in other words:If you never modified them they wouldn't exist in your account but would jut load the defaults. Hope that's all it is
