Fails to create preview and smart preview

Hi, I am using MacBook (late 2008) OS X 10.9.2 and recently upgraded to Lightroom 5.3 from Lightroom 4. After a while, some photo started to show exclamation mark at the right hand corner of the photo (*.CR2 raw files in NAS) in grid view. When I click on the exclamation mark, it shows a dialog with following message; "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo". So, I moved previews.lrdata, which is about 9GB, to the trash and restarted the Lightroom 5, expecting Lightroom 5 to create a new previews.lrdata. However, it won't create any preview at all. Anyone else having same kind of problem?

size of Previews.lrdata file stops at 152KB.

Jao, thanks for the quick response! I tried what you have said before reading your post and was able to solve this. The cause was exactly what you have pointed out and I changed connection protocol from cifs to smb. Thank you very much for suggestion

Importing both smart previews and standard previews crashes

I understood that Lightroom does not use smart previews as previews in most cases and still uses previews as before for working on. I normally import as standard previews because this improves speed whilst working on them. I have just ticked the smart preview box for a couple of files that I thought I might want to work on after transferring them to my externsl drive and it crashed when set with standard, OK with minimal, I am now wondering if in fact the smart previews are the previews it works on and that by setting it to standard as well it has confused the program and that is why it crashed, but then why have the option of both or is it simply a computer resources issue trying to create both standard and smart previews.

Regular previews are primarily for library module (e.g. you need them for loupe view).
Smart previews are only for develop module and exporting (they provide image data in lieu of original (e.g. raw) file).
There is no "conflict of interest".
That said, I have no idea why it crashed unless maybe you ran out of disk space or something (?)
If (because of some problem you are having) you want both but you have to pick one, pick smart previews. Regular previews can be created from smart previews, but not vice versa (yes: it will take time).

My background image isn't lining up between my design, preview, and web preview. HELP!

I'm new to using Muse and have spent the afternoon going through online tutorials etc. I understand the fundamentals of adding an image to use as a background, but when I upload the image, it lines up completely different in design, preview, and web preview screens. I've been playing around with different settings but I can't for the life of me figure how to make my preview and web preview look like my design page.
Below are design page, preview page, web preview.
I'm sure there is some fundamental piece I'm missing here as I can't seem to find any threads with the same question being posed. If I had hair, I'd be pulling it our right about now.

1) Resize your image in Photoshop to the maximum width you require for browser display (probably ~1600px, but certainly less than than 2560px) and use Save for Web to create a JPEG of it with the lowest JPEG quality rating you can stand (or your initial page load times will be slow) and import that back into Muse. (The most likely reason the Muse Preview is blank is that this image is too large, in terms of number of total number of pixels.)
2) In the Browser Fill panel in the Fitting options popup menu choose "Scale to Fill". Scale to fill will scale the image up proportionally such that none of the black background shows. If the aspect ratio of the browser window is different than the image, then a portion of the width or height of the image will be cropped. What portion is determined by how the image is aligned using the "Position:" control in the Browser Fill panel.
Because browser window sizes vary (since they're user resizable) the display of the image will be different than what is seen in Muse Design view. However, the letterboxing/pillarboxing effect in the screenshot you provided is due to the Fitting Option being set to "Scale to Fit" rather than "Scale to Fill".

Create HDR with smart previews

Currently, to create HDR images I select my images and choose "Edit HDR in Photoshop".
Now that we can use smart previews to edit our photos on the go without having to have the full file with us, does this extend to creating HDRs? I'm going to guess that we need the full file to create the HDR and it can't just apply my "create HDR" changes later when the full files are plugged in like it can normal photo edits, but I wanted to check.
Also, same question for panoramas. Can they be done with smart previews or do I need the original file?
EDIT: In case anyone comes across this in a search, I went ahead and bought LR5 and tried it and it is not possible. All of the "Edit in" options are grayed out when using a smart preview in lieu of the original file.

Yes that would make sense because smart previews are for synchronizing work entirely within Lightroom. Once you go outside and into Photoshop you would lose that functionality.

Muse CC 2014 - Does not update properly changes on websites in preview and browser preview

Hi, I am working in a project on Muse CC 2014 and everything in the designer view works pretty well, but when I make change to colors, fonts, menus, etc and click preview, I cant see my changes, instead I saw old version of my project, the same happens on the browser preview, I need help cause I have to get this done today. Thank you.

We purchased CC for teams and upgraded all workers to InDesign CC 2014.2 in March. Because I installed using a package - rather than individually - quite a few plug-ins were not working. This week, I uninstalled InDesign CC 2014.2 on everyone's machine and individually installed InDesign, from the Creative Cloud menu. However, instead of installing the expected InDesign CC 2014.2, it installed InDesign CC 2014. As stated above, "It doesn't even show up that the updates are available, it simply says "up to date"". Obviously this is not true - since we just had 2014.2 last week.
Can someone please let me know why the new install would have regressed to a previous version - and how I might be able to get the current version back?

Failed to create vuser and Failed to create an instance of script

I have a parent script of type web service which would call 5 child scripts . 3 child scripts are webservice and 2 child scripts are of web test.
However when the function call goes to the child script (web test), the following exception is being thrown.

I made a very simple desig. Master page header has logo and two rectangles: opacity 70% and white.
Why appearence in design, preview, and browser are different? Am I missing some settings?

Muse preview is the closest approximation of how your site would look in different browsers. It is advisable to always preview the site in a browser before finalizing the design.

Preview and "Smart" quotes

I am trying to search through a PDF document that contains some (unfortunately named) "smart quotes". The term I am searching for is "Dean's", however the document contains "Dean’s". The quote mark in the second word is actually a multibyte Unicode character.
Is there a way to configure Preview, or the Mac in general, to ignore these differences when performing searches? That is, to find "Dean’s" even when I'm looking for "Dean's"? As a human, there's essentially no difference between the two.

I think not, they represent two different character streams. You probably need to search for both if you don't already know which of them the text uses.
But some apps may do this automatically. I think Pages, for example, may find both kinds of punctuation when you put either in the Edit > Find dialogue.

Image content type in Site Asset Image library: The Preview and Thumbnail Preview columns do not display the picture of the item.

I have two different Site Asset libraries. The Site Asset Picture library has items of
content type picture. The Site Asset Image Library has items of
content type image.
1) I do not quite understand the different between a picture content type versus an image content type.
2) the thumbnail and preview columns do not display the image in the Site Asset
Image Library. (the image does display in the thumbnail column of the Site Asset Picture library.) I expected the image to display in the Site Asset Image Library the same as it does in the Site Asset Picture library.

I have subsequently found out that our "Site Asset Images" library is a Document Library to which someone must have replaced the Document content type with an Image content type. I also found out that picture previews/thumbnails cannot be displayed
in Document libraries. So the problem was the library type, not the content type.
So I simply created a new Picture Library (whose content type = picture) and copied the files into that and the thumbnails displayed just fine!
I bet what led to this is the default "Site Assets" library that is created for a new Team site. It is just a document library but sounds very similar to the "Assets" library. I can imagine someone thinking the "Site Assets" library was a standard
container for images, and simply changed the name to better identify the content!
As far as 'image' vs 'picture' content types, I noticed that a new Picture Library contains a content type of 'picture', but an Asset Library contains a content type of 'image' (as well as audio and video). Although the 'image' content type has a few
more fields than the 'picture' content type (picture content type does not have thumbnail), the actual Picture Library contains pretty much all the same fields, including the thumbnail. So for all practical purposes, either library type can be used for
storage of pictures. I am guessing that the Pictures Library which uses the picture content type is for backwards compatibility purposes, and that the 'image' content type is newer, being derived from the new "Rich Media Asset" content type and used
in the new Asset Library which can hold audio and video in addition to pictures.
Microsoft Help also mentioned that a Picture Library has a slide view which an Asset library does not. So my take on that is that if you want the potential of seeing your pictures as a slide show, put them in a Picture library which is still using
the 'picture' content type of previous SharePoint versions. If you want to keep pictures organized with audio/video files, then put them into an Asset library which uses the 'image' content type derived from the new Rich Media Asset content type.

Hard Drive failed both postive read and smart short self test

Hello, my Lenovo Think Pad's Hard Drive failed both targeted read test (error code WHD20-HJF) and the smart self test (error code WHD16-KPY). I admit that I'm an older user and I have no idea what this means and what is the possible fix for it.
I am open to all suggestions;

Hi, Octavious
When the hard drive fails those tests, it's an indication that the drive is dying. It's recommended to back up any valuble data on the hard drive and then replace it soon. The drive may still work for a little while, but it will likely stop working sometime soon.

Smart Previews issue. LR5 catalog saying "The file could not be found" for entire collection. How do I "sync" or "find" the smart previews?

I created an LR5 catalog with 1:1 previews and smart previews. I then placed the catalog along with the previews and smart previews files into dropbox.
Came home to work remotely, opened the catalog from dropbox and I can see the photos in library mode. But once I go to develop, LR is saying "The file could not be found"
Smart Preview cache file is there right below the lrcat file.
Anyone know how I can make the catalog find that smart previews cache?

There are ? next to the folders but that's to be expected because that drive is not connected to my comp.
And there are exclamation points next to each image.. but again.. drive is not connected. But I've used smart previews before and that was the fix to working without the original raw images available.
However the smart previews don't seem to be working this time as I cannot edit the images.

Pros and cons of 'smart preview' over ordinary preview?

I'm pondering how to use smart previews, and the only drawback I can see of using smart previews instead of traditional previews is that there's no 100% smart preview - the images are downsized to 2048 for smart previews, whereas traditional previews can be 1:1.
Aside from that, the smart preview seems better in every way.
I guess they can work in tandem - the 1:1 preview rendering the image quickly in loupe view comes to mind - but does it make sense to generate both smart and traditional previews?

Not much. Smart preview is unbaked substitute for raw file, used for develop/export (i.e. when rendering is done). Regular preview (aka library preview), is for a quick view - no rendering done.

I'm using Lightroom 5 and I'm interested in the smart preview feature; one question: is it possible a workflow like this one: work with a desktop with all the photos in one hard disk and no smart preview; then export one catalog with smart preview and open it in my laptop so that I can work with the files and modify. Then export it back to the desktop version once I'm back home.

Problems with display of preview - and Adobe's tech support.

After quite a bit of struggle I am still experiencing problems with the way Bridge CS5 displays previews. Previews are displayed with rather low quality. By that I mean low resolution that causes images to appear pixelated and out of focus. I've tried every possible setting in Bridge (or at least I think I have) but nothing seems to work. The setting that forces Previews to be built to the specific monitor size of the computer used doesn't work for me as I spend equal amounts of time working between my Macbook Pro 17" and my Apple 30" cinema display that have different resolutions. I've tried this setting and the preview images created on the notebook would not display at all on the 30" display.
I have contacted support only to find it is nearly non-existent. A voice obviously from someone located in India answered and kept asking what I considered to be basic questions and must have used the word "apologize" at least 20 to 30 times (no exageration) during the 1 hour and 43 minutes we were on the phone to accomplish nothing other than to "register" my complaint.
What is happening to Adobe ? This is not a joke, a rumor or an angry comment but rather a serious question from a user who has built a professional workflow based on the use of Adobe's products. I have been an user of the Adobe Creative Suite since its very first version and of the individual applications even before then. Bridge is one of the applications I use the most in my workflow that involves the organization of my large database of medical images I keep from my treatments and research. So this is very serious to me. I am now on the phone with Adobe waiting again to speak with someone in technical support. I was told the average waiting time would take between 35 and 50 minutes and I didn't think it would be possible but so far I have been on hold waiting for 1 hour and 7 minutes and someone has yet to answer the phone. What is happening with Adobe ? Is the company about to go out of business ? The last time I remember experiencing such a lack of support from a company I did so when contacting Polaroid and we all know what happened to it.
To make matters worse I have twice contacted Adobe and asked their technical support agent to remove a phone number that they seem to have mistakenly written as a contact number in my files. More than one month after I registered my support request I finally received an e-mail stating that had tried to contact me at the phone that isn't mine and shouldn't be a part of my records despite the fact I have instructed them twice to remove. There are serious legal implications here as I am bound to confidentiality when it comes to the medical information I manage with my Adobe applications and the idea that someone in technical support may accidentally share this information with a stranger while calling the wrong number is a serious problem.
What is going on ?
Outside of this forum I have no idea who to contact and if it is even worthwhile doing so as it may prove to be a huge waste of time.
Bridge has been a problem application since its inception. In fact the only version of Bridge that seemed to have worked (somewhat) right out of the box was the first one. I have experienced problems with Bridge with every single new version. Previews that don't display properly, crashes, folder hierarchy indicators not displaying properly, and others. The same images display fine if I open them in Apple's OS X Preview or Photoshop CS5. The problem is restricted to Bridge. All images are RAW high-quality images from a professional Canon EOS 1Ds MK II camera with a 17 megapixel full size sensor, and they always look stunning on everything else.
What is one to do ???

I've tried both choices for both options. My usual default options are 'Software Rendering' unchecked as I have a new Macbook Pro (only a few months old) and the graphics card is powerful enough to handle the previews and 'Monitor Previews' also unchecked.

On Bridge's interface upper right hand corner I have also selected using one of its pull down menus the following options:
