Fan not turning on until very hot

My Air has recently taken to getting very hot even when only running basic stuff, like surfing the internet. The fan is not cutting on until the computer is very hot. Is this a fan problem or a temperature reading problem? Is there a fix I can do or should I take it in?

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.

  • Help!!! Macbook fan not turning on!

    Hello there!
I have a problem with my macbook fans. The fans do not turn on until the computer has been running at 80°C for 5 minutes and only then my macbook only runs at 3000 revolutions. The fans idle is 2000... I know this because I have an application from the mac app store called temp. guage and that tells me temperatures and fan speeds.
The fans to both of my brothers macbooks turn on once the computer is about 60-75°C and it turns onto 6000 revolutions and their idle is 2000 revolutions . Could it be that I have a macbook and not a macbook pro? Or could there be something wrong with my fans?
When I got the computer about 1 year ago the fans turned on a lot but I didn't have this app for various reasons but I could hear the fan turning on. I know that the fan back then was faster becaue i could heat it and when the fans now are at 3000 I can not hear it.
Could a connection be loose - I have never opened the back case but I carry the macbook a lot with my in school? Could there be so much dust on the fan that it tries to spin faster but it simply can't? Could it be the grease on the fan? can anyone help me narrow my decision? Do I need to replace my fan?
Today I was at the apple store and I did a diagnostic test. The only problem was with my speakers but I did not notice that. Point it the fans were all right in the diagnostic test but in reality the fans are not all right...
Someone please help! This is a desperate problem my computer keeps on shutting off because it gets too hot.

    Thanks in advance!

First thing I would try is resetting the machine SMC.

    Hi S,
Did they have you try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?

  • X240 Fan Not Spinning Until Very Hot

I have an X240 and notice that the fan only starts to spin when the laptop gets VERY hot.  There seems to be no in between, either the fan is not spinning at all or it's going as fast as I can.  Are there any tools that I can use to troubleshoot this?

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.

  • IBook fan not turning on anymore

    Hi!
I'm using my iBook G4 (1.33 GHz) for about 9 months now and most of that time i played some game every now and then (hardware intense games like Halo or World of Warcraft). Normally, the fan started working for a few minutes and everything was fine. But in the last days (it's really hot here in Vienna...), the fan never turned on. Even when I'm playing WoW and the temperature reaches 72 degrees C, the fan doesn't turn on (normally it starts at about 65 C). I'm really wondering if this has got something to do with the 10.4.7 update because I didn't play for a few weeks and now this problem arised.
Are there any known problems with this update? Or is there some software that allows me to turn on the fan manually?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marco
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have had my iBook g4 1.42ghz for almost a year now. I have not once heard the CPU fan turn on, not even when playing Doom 3.
Then again, my CPU rarely passes the 55 degree mark.
It should be the case that if the CPU gets too hot, the iBook will shut itself down.
Does anyone know the max temp for the CPU before failure?
My main concern is not for every single instance you would expect the fan to come on, so much as accumulated damage to the mainboard from maintaining such high temps. Maybe you should run a hardware test? Heck, with everything you have already tried, you may as well boot to the install disk and run disk repair and repair permissions. I can't imagine what could be wrong with the filesystem\permission that would cause this, but sometimes a little nonsensical voodoo magic cures problems that should not be related to these things.
Good luck, and keep an external fan blowing on your machine until this is resolved.

  • Fan not turning on...

Hey guys, hoping you can help me out.
My fan is not turning on and the case is hot to the touch. Noticed this a few days ago. Usually the fan turns on before it gets this hot.
I have run Cocktail maintenance and I have reset the PRAM, but still no go. I also have noticed that my machine chokes up doing simple things such as swithcing applications—like from Safari to Mail or Preview. Nothing overly CPU intensive.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    BGreg,
Turns out, my HDD was going bad. I actually found out yesterday morning when my machine froze during boot-up (spinning pinwheel). I booted from my Tiger Disc and ran Disc Utility...Low and behold the "Failure" warning from the S.M.A.R.T.
To answer your question though, I actually did run Activity Monitor during those fwe days and the cpu load was low. I didn't have my Hardware Test Disc since I am on vacation. Also don't have a processor temp application. DO you have any suggestions?
Anyhow, I had to call Apple Care to make sure they can cover the repair of my Pbook while I am on vacation here in the Philippines-which they do since APP is global for portables
NOTE: If you don't have Apple Care with a Powerbook, I highly suggest it. It's worth the piece of mind. My PBook was just 3months out of the 1yr Hardware Warranty.

  • Macbook air's fan not turning off and it will not sleep when the lid is closed?

I downloaded OS X Mavericks yesterday. The fan will not turn off. It runs whenever i turn on the computer. The computer does  not turn off when i close the lid, and the fan still runs. There is also no battery icon anymore on my home screen. Is this just a bug with Mavericks? My computer is a mid 2012 edition.

  • Lock button not working and gettin very hot when used.

Hi my lock button started working intermittently but now has stopped working completely. When in use it get very hot and when charging its so hot u can't touch it. Unsure what to do as only had iPhone 5 since march.

Your phone is still under warranty.  Bring the phone to Apple for evaluation and probable replacement.

  • Toshiba Qosmio fans not spinning up until high temperatures

I'm using a Qosmio X75 Laptop. My problem is that when playing games (which is a primary use for the laptop) the fans do not speed up to the high setting until the GPU is seemingly already overheating. My FPS wildly varies from second to second. Things will be fine, then FPS will drop drastically and the fans will kick in. That's fine, except that after a second or three the fans slow back down. Of course, seconds later, the GPU will begin overheating again and the fans will kick back in.
This is absolutely crippling the laptop's performance. I have tried speed fan and poking through the BIOS to find a setting where I can say "100% Fans all of the Time." I don't care that my fan's life span is decreased, because as far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have to pay to replace the fans than have a partly functioning laptop. Does anyone else have this problem, and has anyone found a way around it? Is there an official tool that Toshiba puts out that will allow me to do this?
    Thanks

I have the exact same problem! The fan stops as soon as the CPU is cooled down. This

  • Fans not turning off.

I don't know if this is in the right topic but here is my problem. I have the 790fx-gd70 in my custom build, my os is windows 7 home premium. When my pc goes to sleep, the fans keep running all night long. How do I correct this problem?

Yes there could be something in BIOS but since we do don't have a clue as to what your hardware is you're not going to get much help until you let us know what you have.

  • Fan is loud and computer very hot.

The fan has been running pretty loud last 3-4 days and computer is almost red hot within seconds of coming on. Hardware test revelas error (code 4SNS/1/40000001:1DSR-0.000. Any thoughts or ideas or better yet, solutions? All help is appreciated. Thanks!
    Len

Code "SNS" is a sensor failure. When a sensor fails, a fail-safe procedure kicks in and runs the fans full speed so the loss of the sensor will not lead to loss of the computer.
The only thing that might help is reseting the System Management Controller. See this Apple arilce for instructions:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Find the section that includes iMacs.
IF that doesn't help, you can't fix it at home. You will need to have Apple service the computer.

  • I have a late 2013 15inch retina. The screen randomly turns black. There is no error message. It will not turn on until I close it and reopen it.  It returns to the page I was on as if nothing had happened.

monitor randomly turns off to black screen

I would reset the SMC. If that does not help, take it in for testing.

  • Why can I not turn the volume very loud when using headphones?

When I play music back the volume is not very loud, I have put the volume to the high setting but not very loud. Can any one help?-

Hi, I have some questions in tha case before we can decide whats wrong
    1) Is it happening with particular song? - if yes then its an issue with song
    2) is it with all songs( check head phones with other player or so it might be faulty)
    3) Is there any volume limit (lock) set on your ipod
if head phones are fine and if it happens with all songs and if same songs play with good sound on computer you might need to restore your ipod and reupdate the songs may be an issue with ipod but if all songs play with similar kind of sound on computer your ipod should be ok as it might be the sound quality of those songs

After a random amount of time, usialy a fiew minutes after the computer starts, the display turns of.
This happens in the BIOS menu, the live arch tty, arch tty and gnome.
This does not happen if i boot into windows or a Ubutu live cd.
When the display blanks out in a tty i am still able to interact with it,  eg: if i blindly type 'reboot[enter]' the stystem reboots, ore 'man[space]ls[up][up]' computer peeps.
When the display blanks out in Gnome the keyboard gets disabled aswell.
I am able to ssh into the computer if it blanks out while i am runnig arch.
When the computer blanks out nothing but a hardware shutdown and restart seams to turn on the dispaly again. doing a reboot comand (while blanked out) thorugh ssh causes the computer to reboot but the display is still disabled after the reboot.

It might be some motherbord fiture that blanks out the screen, what is curious though is thet Windows and Ubuntu never blankout, not even temporarely. So there must be somthing that can be done from the OS side.
Another weird thing is that I would exect it to blank out when the user input is inactive if it was a pawer saving fiture, but it usialy blanks out while i am typing.
I am grateful for all the help I can get.

  • Exhaust Fan not turning on.

Could someone please tell me how to turn on my exhaust fan?? My MB is running at about constant 55℃, which is normal, but I ran the yes>/dev/null and it was up over 110℃ with CPU idle% usage of 47% and still no fan turned on. It used to come on all the time while I was watching videos etc and now - nothing. I've recently had the logic board replaced - coincidence?
smcFanControl is installed - no effect.
FanControl 2.1 is installed - no effect.
iStat is installed for monitoring - exhaust fan reads 0rpm.
    Help!!
    Thanks.

I would take it in to Apple.
