Fans continuously run loud on late 2011 13" MacBook Pro

Hey All,
I hav a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro and about a week ago the fans began to run loudly and constantly no matter what I'm doing-whether checking email or running a dozen layers in a Photoshop project. Anyone have any clues? Running Lion, 4 GB RAM--bought an 8 GB kit but not yet installed, would that help? is there a firmware update or something?
Thanks for any assist.

i'm having the same problem too, with my early 2011 mbp 13".  recently downloaded iStat pro, and found out that my fans are usually running about 6000rpm, and my CPU temp is above 90.  i'm using preview, word/excel and listening to music.
not to beat a dead horse (again) but none of this happened when i was on snow leopard.  i upgraded straight from SL to ML, and a host of problems ensued (mostly battery health/life).  is it something that can be tracked again to a faulty piece of hardware in the system that was highlighted after the OS upgrade?

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

You don't have a late 2011 MB Pro.
    You have a 2010 version.  Your MB doesn't support 16GB.  8GB Max.
That's what it shows on your about this MAC.
    You need to return the RAM and get 8GB ( 2 X 4GB ) 1066MHz.
Your system bus is set to 1066MHz.
You're having issues because you've installed more RAM than your MB can support.  It's only reading 4GB per bank which totals to 8GB and not 16GB.

  • Looking for 16GB RAM That is Compatible with Late-2011 17" Macbook Pro

    Hi guys,
I am looking to upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive in my late-2011 17" Macbook Pro. I've already found the hard drive I want to use, but I don't know as much about RAM, and I'm not sure which 16GB (2 x 8GB) kit would be both compatible and give me the best bang for my buck. I am in Canada so any suggestions linking to Canada Computers or NewEgg would be the best! I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    First, goto OWC - https://www.macsales.com/
It has a guide for all things Mac & Memory
Second, get an SSD as it will speed up your computer tremendously.
OWC or Crucial are very good Mac-friendly brands.

  • Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?

Hi. My question is pretty much as the heading says :
Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?
As far as I can tell from googling and searching around, it does appear that it is safe to do so.
    Specifically this page
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346
But I just wanted to double-check for confirmation that it is indeed safe to use the adapter from such an old mbook pro in a newer one.
    The wattage is the same.
I wish to do so as I prefer the T-connector, and my older adapter has a much longer extension cord on it.
If not I may order another one from ebay.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
    Thanks for your help.

    Yes.
I recommend you buy one directly from Apple. There are many counterfeit power adapters on the market that could damage your MacBook Pro or potentially cause a fire.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
Nearly all of them are, even if the seller insists it is "genuine OEM". Legitimate adapters from eBay are likely to be used, not new. There is nothing wrong with used, as long as you know what you're getting.
Identifying a counterfeit is possible only through close examination.

  • Late 2011 17" Macbook Pro upgrade advice needed

Hey everybody, I would like to u[grade my Late 2011 17" Macbook Pro.
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    750GB HDD
    OSX 10.7.4
So after reading on Crucial.com that I could house 16gb ram, despite what apple said, I investigated this and according to people this is tr
So my next question is, will i be able to fit a 512GB SSD from Crucial into my MBP? THe only reason I feel it's a valid question is I had the option of 1 and 2Tb Hdds WITH a 256GB SSD.
    Thanks for reading everybody

The only way that you can use both a SSD in your drive bay and another hard drive is to install the hard drive in your optical bay. If you're willing to give up your optical drive, OWC sells kits to do just that.
Then you could use your external drives for data storage & backups.
    Is this a workable option?

  • HT201257 Hi -- I have a late 2011 13" macbook pro that shipped with and runs Lion. Unfortunately, I do not have the install disks with me. Holding down D key does nothing. What can I do?

How can I run the hardware test on a macbook pro that SHIPPED with lion (never had an earlier OS) without access to the install disks? I am away from them and home for several months. Holding down the D key does nothing.

Press "Option" and "D" key together.
"Restart your computer, holding down the “D” key while the computer restarts. After your computer restarts, you should see the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen. If you don’t, Apple Hardware Test may not be available on your computer. You may be able to start Apple Hardware Test from the Internet. Reconnect your computer to the network, and then restart your computer while holding down both the Option and “D” keys."

  • How to I get Graphic Drivers for Windows 7 using Bootcamp on my Late 2011 17" MacBook Pro?

I just received my new 17" Late 2011 MacBook Pro to replace my older model MBP.  I had configured the older MBP with two 500Gb SSD drives by replacing the original hard drive and the DVD with 500Gb SSDs.  Works fine.  I then simply installed these two SSDs from the older MBP on the new machine.  OSX works fine, after a few software updates.  Likewise Win 7 Pro is installed on a Boot Camp partition with the drivers from the Mid 2010 MBP.  Windows seems to run fine after the expected reactivation, but the graphics are obviously not running at full resolution, I am certain this is due to the differing graphics card between the Mid 2010 MBP and the Late 2011 MBP.
Apple does not show any drivers download for the new MBP, I am running BootCamp software version 4.0.
Although I could certainly do it, I don't want to spend the time to run a new installation of Windows 7 and reinstall all the myriad windows updates.  It would take hours.
I know that the new installation process takes a step to download the BootCamp drivers, but how can you reinitiate this process after installing BootCamp as I have without progressing through the whole installation process?
    Any help appreciated.....

"At least 16 GB of free space on the disk onto which you’re installing for 32-bit, or 20 GB for 64-bit (for Microsoft Windows and Windows-based applications)."
That's what Apple proposes in here Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows
Personally I would double these amounts and add to that the diskspace needed for your Windows games.

  • Memory upgrade for Late 2011 15" MacBook Pro

Hi I've recently bought MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011 and I would like to install more RAM on it.
The thing is that apple explicitly specifies that valid memory for my MBP is
    PC3-10600 1333MHz
    (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270?viewlocale=en_US#link3).
Unfortunately on my location neither of computer stores have that particular memory modules.
The closest model that could match (and is available at place where I am) is
    PC3-10666 1333MHz.
Is this memory type suitable for my Mac? Should it work without problems?
And BTW, should this replacement void my warranty if I do it by myself?
    Thanks and kind regards

Today's DDR3-1333 has a peak bandwidth of 10666 MHz, which can be improperly rounded down and called PC3-10600, rounded up to be called PC3-10700 or stated without rounding as PC3-10666 depending on the manufacturer's desires.

  • Macbook Pro 17 Late 2011 vs Macbook Pro 13 2012

    Hey
I have a Macbook Pro 17 Late 2011 model, its works like charm but my onyl problem with it , its too big for me , i travel a lot and its not really good for portability. I use this mac mainly for coding and developing and playing WoW (in BootCamp) but i play nothing else. So my friend said he is willing to buy from me and i decide to get a new macbook pro but the 13" for portability and its also fair enough for coding but im afraid thats its not enough for playing WoW. My friend pay me 1800€ and i found a brand new Macbook Pro for 1050€ + 300€ (for 256gb ssd and 16gb ram) so its gonna be a fast machine but maybe still not enough for WoW. What should i do?

The 17" model is one of the last that supports Express/34.
Thunderbolt does offer more expansion options, but at additional cost.
Make sure the 13" model you get has built-in optical drive unless you don't use it.
Make sure any games you develop for support the graphics card of the machine you end up getting.  If they don't, don't expect them to magically work on your machine.
I typically have found the recommended graphics card is the only one that works.  Minimum graphics card may at random not work, unless you do no multitasking with many games.

  • MacBook Pro 17" Glossy (Late 2011) vs MacBook Pro 13" Glossy (Late 2011)

    Hi everybody,
I have bought a MacBook Pro 17" 3 months ago. I really love it and it's cool. A few days ago, one of my friends came to my office, broght his MacBook Pro 13" which he had also bought it a few days after me.
He told me he feels my MBP 17" display is somehow blurry. I compare the two devices against each other. Both of them had glossy displays. But I think he was actually write. I think the MBP 13" display looks a little brighter and nicer.
I have also an iMac 21.5" (Late 2009). As you might know, iMac has a very wide viewing angle. The first time I brought my MBP out of the box and turned it on, I found that it's display is not the same as iMac, and it made me a little sad. Actullay I bought a glossy one, since I thought it works the same as iMac display; but that's not true.
I don't expect a MBP to have a very wide viewing angle, but can I expect it to show me the colors as shiny and beautiful as iMac does?
I think my friend's MBP 13" display looks more beautiful than my BMP 17" and it's so much similar to iMac's diaply than mine is! Is there any possibility that my MBP is fake????? I am not sure about that and don't know what to do!
Do you have any idea? Can you tell me something that makes me sure if my MBP is not fake?
    Thank you very much,
    Mani Hamedani

I found the solution and here it is:
In fact the difference between my iMac and MBP display was due to calibration. Using the expert mode of the Color Calibration in the System Preferences > Display, I calibrated both my MBP and iMac and now there is no issue with colors.
The difference between them is the wide viewing angle of iMac display.
Just remember, calibrate your display to have the best colors depending on the light of the room you are working in.

  • Late 2011 17" MacBook Pro reboots CONSTANTLY!!!

Okay first a little history, not sure if it has anything to do with the problem but it might be because it was when this started.  Back in October of last year I replaced my DVD-ROM with a HD adapter and installed a SSD an "OCZ Agility 3" to be exact.  I have metered internet so I waited a few weeks to download Mountain Lion for it.  Well instantly my computer started these just random reboots, which normally I have some sort of game or music playing so right before the reboot the computer will freeze then the sound will be stuck like an old record and do that about 5-10 times and then reboot with a white screen which states: "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."  and displayed in five other languages as well.  I work overseas in Iraq so its hard for me to get parts but still feasible, recently I took out the whole adapter (didn't put DVD-ROM because I didn't bring it) and it did not solve the issue and I still have reboots below are two of my most recent Panic Reports.  Any and all help is much abligued the only thing I have yet to do is wipe clean the original Hard Drive that came with the Mac because I don't have my Windows CDs but the weight of that is dwindling by the minute.  Also if someone smarter than I can explain to me how to read these reports maybe I'll be able to do some trouble shooting on my own thanks!

  • Dual Monitors on Late 2011 17" MacBook Pro

    Hello:
I wanted to do a dual monitor system for work; I have two 24" Apple Cinema Displays -- as you know they come equipped with a Mini-DVI I/O along with a mag-power, and USB 2.0 I/O.  I found a Matrox DualHead2Go Digital ME [http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/digital_me/] as a possible solution, the issue I am having is that Apple has not made a DVI-D I/O on a Cinema Display since the 30" Display many years ago.  The Matrox product is new, and touts that it is Apple friendly but I cannot (for the life of me) find a cable/converter to go: Mini-DVI (female) to DVI (male) to make this work.  So, does anyone know if this cable exists, and if it does, where can I get it?  Or, does anyone know if someone makes a product that will allow dual monitors (NOT stretched desktop) that will go Thunderbolt/Mini-Display Port to Mini-DVI so I can get true dual monitors on my MBP so I can run it in clamshell mode on my desktop?
Just as a FYI, I am NOT interested in going to a USB solution as the refresh rate and resolution would not be good enough to warrant consideration.
Thanks in advance for all of your expert help and opinions!

The only way that you can use both a SSD in your drive bay and another hard drive is to install the hard drive in your optical bay. If you're willing to give up your optical drive, OWC sells kits to do just that.
Then you could use your external drives for data storage & backups.
    Is this a workable option?

  • I have a late 2011 15" MacBook Pro with a Windows 7 partion. On both sides of my HD, i cant burn DVDs.

I've tried Windows Media Player, and Windows Movie Maker on Windows. On Mac, I've tried a few different things including Burn. For some reason i dont have iDVD. In my "About this Mac" it says that my optical drive can burn DVDs. It always goes through the process, then skips to the end and spits out the disk saying it couldnt complete the task. I dont understand why its so difficult these days when burning DVDs used to be so simple.

I thought about doing what you said above, but unfortunately, I didn't have any spare blank DVD's. However, I was able to sucessfully install Windows & on my Mac. What I did was when I got to the error message, I would cancel the installation and that would return me back to the install now window. At that point, I would take out the flash drive and put it into another USB port. It took a few times, but eventually it recognized the drivers and allowed me to install the software. Remember, once you get past that point, the installation will ask you to choose a drive to install Windows on. Highlight the Boot Camp drive and chose "advanced", and then chose "format" after that. After all of this, it should be smooth sailing.
