Faster H.264 QT export without recompressing every frame?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to find a faster HDSLR workflow.
Is it possible to export H.264 .MOV without recompressing every frame?
On my HV30 I would export my HDV footage with File: Export: QuickTime movie with 'Current settings' selected. The export would take 1-5 minutes and give me fantastic quality because it would only render the edits and effects..
Now with footage from any DSLR if I do the same thing it completely messes up the exported movie. So I have to use File: Export: Using QuickTime conversion and select the appropriate setings. FCP then renders every frame which gives a perfect image but also takes about 40-60 mins of render time per 5 minutes of final video.
This is the problem - the render time.
Anyone know of any workflow that would eliminate the need to render every frame using canon DSLR's H.264 MOV files?
The best solutions and workflows will be posted in a tutorial my blog nitsantv.wordpress.com as well as nextwavedv.com (I'm a guest writer there) so any help here will be a huge help to lots of other DSLR filmmakers too. (Contributor's will get a link to their site/portfolio)
Please note that i'm trying to make a really fast workflow, so converting to ProRes before editing is not suitable.
I don't think the Epic I software will do anything to help with the matter because from what it says on the website FCP still renders from the original H.264 files when using this software.

Film: A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a story conveyed with moving images..
Filmmaking: Filmmaking (often referred to in an academic context as film production) is the process of making a film, from an initial story, idea, or commission, through scriptwriting, shooting, editing, directing and distribution to an audience..
Sorry if my original post was mileading. I was not about to just copy people's answers and post them as an article. but simply write a tutorial on what I found to be the fastest workflow and thank the contributors with links.
If you look at my blogs and guest articles you would see that I post information I think will be useful to fellow (insert job description here).

  • Exporting without recompression.

My computer currently isn't powerful enough to edit a video that an hour long. Therefore, I had to split my video into eight parts. I exported them, but as you all know, you lose quality if a file is recompressed again. A movie that has eight parts doesn't look right, so I was wondering if any of you know of a program that can piece the parts together my exported video files, without having it going though another compression?

I worked on 2 projects with Premiere CS4 with MTS files. One project was 1 hour long and another started at 4 hours reducing to 2 hours after edit. My computer is minimum what is required so I expected sluggish performance. Edit was not a problem but when I tried to encode to H264 bluray Encoder was freezing. I solved the situation by exporting 1 hour video in 20 minute parts and joining them in Encore. The other project of 2 hours I could not encode even 5 minute selection. Project is linked to some 1200 MTS files and audio files and it was just to much for my computer. I spent to much time in edit to loose my work. I saved the project under other names, deleted half the timeline in each project and half the folders imported in the projects saved the changes and restarted computer. After opening the project that I have reduced in size I was able to export to Media Encoder in about 20 minute selection and so saved my work. Next time I will create projects that are 1 hour long. This experience may help someone in the same situation. The joining of clips in Encore is invisible if export was done at the chapter points.

  • How to output HDV without recompressing unaltered frames?

    Hello everyone,
I have posted a similar question on the 2.0 forum, but thought I'd give it a go here as well, and try to fine tune it a bit.
My goal is to output a video I have been working on at the highest quality possible, and use it as a 'master' for all further purposes (be it compression for the web, DVD, etc.) In doing so, I'd like to keep the quality as high as possible (so as not to limit future applications), but at the same time, try and not do so at the cost of unnecessarily huge file sizes (that is, I'm not sure there is any need to export a gigantic uncompressed video file where the original footage was shoot in HDV, which is compressed to begin with)
So the solution seems to be trying to maintain as much of the original quality of the HDV footage captured as possible. A discussion with a FCP user led me to the understanding that on final cut you have an option to only render your edits, and save out the file as HDV, thereby leaving the rest just as they were upon import (without further recompression) I cannot see why would there not be a similar option on Premiere...
On the same note, I've done a lot of reading on the subject both on this and outside forums, and noticed that there are quite a few questions that address the subject of export format/setting/quality from various angles, and thought that it might be a good idea to add a thread in the FAQ about the best export settings for... 'X', 'Y', 'Z' -- this way users can share the settings they use for specific purposes or to attain certain results in one place, rather than having them scattered around the forum...
At any rate, all feedback will be much appreciated. Many thank!

    Thanks for all the feedback!
    Steven:
i "There will be some decrease in the quality over the original because there is no way to just re-encode the changed frames. That is due to the Long GOP nature of the beast."
This made me think... I'm assuming the reason you're saying that it's impossible to just re-encode the changed frame is because with GOP there are very few true whole frames, while the rest are being constructed at real time; now, would that still be the case if I were to first capture the footage using a lossless codec, and then import it into the time line? Because I'm thinking that perhaps, since the latter is actually composed of true frames, there is no reason why premiere could not re-encode only the changed ones... Thoughts?
Also, could you please explain the following (as I'm not sure I understand correctly which format you are referring to, as well as where to/how should I copy the file...)
i However, you will probably be happy with exporting to SD, or to any size other than HD, and the format is already HD, so just copy the file.
    Jim,
am I correct to understand you are convinced that working with HDV is a futile effort? If so, could you please elaborate a bit on your conclusion?
    Howard,
I actually thought about exporting MPEG 2 out myself the other day--two questions:
    1. I read that HDV utilizes a
    i form
of MPEG 2 compression; would the MPEG 2 export option offered by adobe premiere be exactly the same, or could it be the same genral method, yet different in some ways?
    2. Supposing that it is exactly the same compression method as HDV, would premiere not re-compress again the entire sequance if I were to export the project in MPEG 2, resulting again in lower quality?
    Thanks again!

  • FCE - "Recompress All Frames" and poor quality QuickTimeexport

    Hello,
The FCE Manual talks about unticking a "Recompress All Frames" option in the "Export QuickTime Movie" Settings. I just can't find that option in my FCE running on a MacPro. I see the other options like "Make a Standalone file" (or whatever the exact words).
Can anyone confirm it is available in FCE and not just Final Cut Pro?
Can someone clarify where exactly I am supposed to see the "recompress All Frames" option?
More generally, I see a huge loss of quality when exporting to QuickTime (ie when viewing the canvas from FCE it looks kindof HD-ish, and when viewing the exported Quicktime video it is at best SD-ish quality). Any other suggestion that unticking the "Recompress All Frames" to avoid one recompression stage?
    Thanks
    Francois

There is no need to recompress every frame.
When you export to QT Movie you are getting an identical copy so there should be no degradation of any kind.
You are probably doing something else wrong but as we don't know exactly what you are doing it is impossible to guess.

  • H.264 export without audio creates files that are not recognized in Quicktime or VLC

    Dear all,
I need to generate h.264 files with video only. (short clips for use with a "clickable" catalog on an iPad)
Used the "H.264" category and chose a preset. Unchecked "Audio" so I only get the video exported.
The resulting .m4v file is not playable in Quicktime or VLC or MPEG streamclip.
When I leave audio enabled with the same preset, the file is fine, but as soon as I export without audio, the resulting file is unreadable.
Source material is ProRes 422HQ, audio+video, about 30-40 seconds long.
    Any clues?
    Carl.
    Mac Pro 5,1
    24GB RAM
    Nvidia Quadro4000
    4TB internal RAID0
    OS 10.7.5
    Premiere 6.0.2

Thanks Jeff, I did get that far ;-)
I'm sorry, probably my question wasn't very clear. Of course I can find some technical info about the iPad...
And of course some of the presets in Media Encoder provide basic starting points for encoding.
But... there is also the first iPad, I couldn't find the specs about it on the Apple site. On everymac.com I found:
Apple reports that the iPad supports "H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats."
So if I want to be compatible with all iPads I need to probably stay under 720p30 with [email protected] for H.264
    When I look at
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC
I find (from the example values) that 1280x720@30p is quite near the maximum matrix size. So with 1024x576 I should be ok there. My bandwith of about 2Mbit is also well within range in this case. But what if I want to fill an iPod screen (1024x768) with the highest possible quality video? How do I calculate if this fits the max frame size requirements, where this is expressed in a number of luma samples and macroblocks? What is my max bandwith? The tables says that the "Max video bit rate for video coding layer (VCL) kbit/s" should be <14.000kbps. Does that directly translate to the sliders in my encoding app?
If you look in the table "AVC software implementations" (under Software encoder feature comparison) you can see that some features that are supported in MainConcept, and not supported in Qt. (8×8 vs. 4×4 transform adaptivity, Quantization scaling matrices, Separate Cb and Cr QP control, etc. What are these exactly?)
In Streamclip one can choose to have B-frames or not, in AME there is no such control. Does that mean it always encodes with B-frames? Why would one not want to have B-frames?
A lot of parameters in AME H.264 encoding seem to be set to certain fixed values that are not accessible to the user. Other programs (Sorensen, Telestream) provide the user with access to more parameters. Which parameters in AME are set to what (fixed, non-accessible) values and why?
As I said earlier, Quicktime reports different codecs for what should be the same format but from different encoders. Why? Is there a program that can analyze a H.264 stream and report about it in more detail than VLC/Quicktime?
    etc. etc. etc....
If anyone could recommend an online resouce or a book to learn more about the ins and outs of H.264 encoding/decoding that would be great. I have the first edition of Charles Poynton's (brilliant!) book "Digital Video and HDTV", which does talk about MPEG-2 but not H.264. I saw that the second edition goes a bit more into detail about H.264. Does anyone have the second edition? Worth buying just for the relatively small addition about H.264?
    Thanks.
    Carl.

  • Pages crashes upon export of PDF every time

I am attempting to export a document with endnotes as a PDF, and Pages crashes, without fail, every time.
    Any ideas?

As Dunestrider mentioned it is likely that you are experiencing the bug discussed here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=768661&tstart=15. I've since noticed that it also causes Pages to crash when you print too.
You probably have a reference to a footnote/endnote that has been manually deleted from the footnote/endnote area. The solution will be to delete the reference from the document. Finding the blighter will be a tad boring. Hopefully you will know roughly where it is because there will be a gap in the sequential numbers or some extra whitespace between two notes.

  • How to export as mp4 and achieve effect of "fast start" in mov export

When exporting as a .mov one can check the "fast start" prepare for internet streaming option. This option allows the end user to start watching your video without waiting for the entire file to buffer/download. That's great.
However, when export as a .mp4 file, the same option does not exist.
Does anyone know how to achieve this "fast start" effect if exporting as an mp4?
I have an existing work around...just rename the .mov to .mp4.
I would like an .mp4 file because I use ezs3 to host my videos and the mp4 player options are far superior to the mov player options.
    Thanks for your help.

I'm having the same problem. I want to export an .mp4 that can start playing as soon as it starts downloading from a web site. Until I can find a solution, I'm using .m4v files, but they're huge.
    Does anyone have a solution?

  • Export without video sequence coding

I have edited clips from a camcorder format (panasonic full hd 1080x1920 50i/s progressive) wich is fully bluray compliant.
I would like to export the sequence without reencoding since  a) it is a lengthy process and b) only provides quality reduction with respect to the native format. ( it stand to reason that effects have to rencoded).
Can sombedoy explain to me how to proceed?
    Thank you
    Phalch

Sorry, you can't. PRE does not 'smart render' - it always re-renders your entire project when Sharing. There are other video editors that do perform smart rendering (Sony Vegas and Magix Movie Edit Pro come to mind). The free GPL virtualdub can "Remove segments of a video clip and save the rest, without recompressing."

  • EXPort (without Mat view logs)

    Hi
    Oracle10g, Win2003
Is there a way to take EXPort without "materialized view logs", as these logs cause error in IMPort and some time even terminate IMPort.
It will be equally well for me if i got a way to completely exclude "materialized view & materialized view logs" from EXPort.
Some one please guide me the way to exclude them from IMP or EXP?

Additionally when ever I IMPort a user some objects appear in non-compiled state, I compile them with my client tool, but I have to drop and recreate materialized view every time.
Can come one have an improved way to get IMPort with materialized view?

  • Lightroom exporting without LR adjustments

I've been happily exporting my LR images, and they have always included what ever adjustments I had made in LR - crop, color, etc. Last week I needed a different cropping of an image. I made a virtual copy, then cropped, selected, and exported only to find that the exported image was the original show, without any cropping or any other adjustments.
I needed the image quickly, so I just opened PS and edited manually, then saved for web.
Today I added some images to LR, edited them, and exported. All the images were original, unedited versions. I've checked the export dialogs, and do not see any options to export without edits (as there is in the "Edit in" dialog).
This lack pretty much cripples LR for me, as far as using it for any serious work. Anyone have this experience? Or more importantly, a fix?

I've been having a similar problem recently in Lightroom. At first I thought it was because I shot an event with fill-flash in daylight and I thought my white balance was messed up because of cross contamination of light. But, since that shoot 2 weeks ago EVERY other shoot (around 1,000 images) have been giving me very weird white balance problems. Essentially, my images seem "greyish" so, I boost temp and tint, I boost vibrance, I try all sorts of tweaking until the image looks passable, but not nearly my typical color and saturation look and feel. The processed images in Lightroom still seem a bit under saturated and just "not right." BUT, when I export them... they're OVER saturated - kinda like the numbers in Lightroom tell me the image should look. So, it seems that the display in Develop mode is under saturated and "off." But, I have no idea how to correctly compensate. I feel like I have some hidden setting set incorrectly - Any thoughts? Ideas greatly appreciated. If a screen grab would help I'll try that.
I'm in Lightroom 2.5 and Camera Raw 5.5
    I'm on a PowerPC Mac running OS X 10.4.11

Message was edited by: jjlevan - I came back to post a screen grab from Lightroom and the JPG which looks like the Lightroom settings you see with the tint and vibrance boosted. But the Lightroom image looks UNDER saturated or almost normal.

  • How can I get adobe flash player to run without asking every time?

Every time I go to a site that needs adobe flash player it asks if its ok to let it run. How do I make it run without asking every time?

A possible cause is that you do not have the latest version of the Shockwave Flash player (16.0.0.305).
You can check that in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" ("Ask to Activate" or "Always Activate").

  • Can i export without double quotes in data files?

How can i export without double quotes in data files using dataexport commands in MaxL?

I don't know of any way to do any formatting in a straight export out of Essbase.  BSO lets you choose between a columnar vs. free form (really Essbase) format.  That lack of formatting includes removing double quotes.
If you're willing to put up with the limitations (and formatting issues) of an MDX extract to a log file, that approach does not put double quotes around member names.  The same is true in Report Scripts although I have a vague recollection that you can put in double quotes if you want it -- obviously you do not.
There are limitations to the above two approaches, the biggest being that they they are not as efficient as a true MaxL export.  OTOH, you may want only part of a database to get exported out in which case either approach may be more to your needs.
If in fact you do want to do a full export, there are lots of OS-level ways of removing double quotes.  Here's a Windows-based approach:

  • Add cue points to FLV without recompressing

    Hello All,
I'm using the standalone cs4 AME and I'm wondering if there is a way to add cue points to an existing FLV file and save it without recompressing. Seems like I must be missing something simple.
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Thanks Jim,
I'll have to check the Flash workflow.
I know in AME I can keep the same size and frame rate, so I figured somehow I could eliminate further compression.
Moyea has a product that does this:
"The program does not re-encode the files for output, making it using the original source file without compression. Since there is no conversion from the source file to the output file, you can create Flash videos with original quality."

  • Export without Markup - JavaScript Error (ExtractTemplateXML.js)

Whenever I try the "Export without Markup" function, I get this error:
"While executing onClick in ExtractTemplateXML.htm, the following JavaScript error(s) occurred: At line 78 of file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CC\Configuration\Commands\ExtractTemplateXML.js": Exception thrown in native function."
    How do I resolve this?

I know this post is old, but as I was having this issue lately, and managed to fix it - I thought I'd post the solution that worked for me, since I haven't seen it elsewhere.
    In short:
Make sure there are no .zip files in the site you are exporting. I noticed my error was showing up right around when the export hit the folder where I had a .zip file.
Go through and delete all of the /_notes/ garbage folders that DW puts in your source site.
After I did both of these things, my export worked fine.
