FCE will not capture PAL footage

Hi,
I'm trying to make a video for some English friends with footage they sent to me which is in PAL format. Normally I use HDV, so I changed the setting under "Easy Setup" to DV-PAL, but FCE will not let me capture it. The camera reads it and displays it on the screen, but it is not recognized by the computer. When I try to "capture now" an error message eventually appears saying "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben

Sorry...I am located in the U.S. My "Easy Setup" setting is normally HDV 1080i60 but I have changed it to DV-PAL. I don't know much about PAL or the different PAL settings (anamorphic, 32khz, etc). I'm not sure I understand your last question, but the camera does display "DVout i.Link" once connected to the computer.
I have tried trashing my preferences but no luck. Apologies for not knowing more about the situation but some of this stuff is a bit over my head. Thanks!

  • Solution when iMovie or FCE will not import AVCHD files or MTS files

Problem: iMovie or FCE will not import your footage from SDHC camera with files in AVCHD structure, or cannot import .mts or .m2ht files (which you may have copied from AVCHD structure. When mounting camera, you can see the camera as disk but iMovie will not try to import footage. If you point Final Cut Express (FCE) to the file structure, it fails to recognize it as a valid file structure. (I have Canon HF10, but understand that this problem is common on many camera models, maybe camera has been turned off at the wrong moment?)
Cause: Faulty file structure on camera or disk
Soultion: Rebuild AVCHD file structure using an AVCHD editing tool. I found multiAVCHD (multiavchd.deanbg.com), which is not perfect, but will do the job. And it is freeware (possible to donate).
I would like comments about others experience - but at least this worked for me:
    - Download and install the software (Yes, you need Windows)
    - Set the right parameters: mostly default, I didn´t want any recoding. But tick off to keep the source files!
    - Select the AVCHD source (or source .mts or m2ts files) and destination
    - Start rebuilding: select output for Sony Playstation 3
    - Put the AVCHD file structure on a USB stick
    *If using iMovie:*
Start iMovie and plug the USB into the mac (virtual disk (.dmg file) or other media should work fine as well). The USB may contain other files as well, but the root of AVCHD must be named AVCHD.
iMovie recognizes the drive as a camera. All is not 100% well, as the dates for making the footage is lost, and the thumbnails are distorted if seen at all, until clicked on. But then import worked for most clips. Some clips gave an error message, but FCE was able to import these (Log&transfer).
*If using FCE:* Use Log and transfer on this file structure (need not be on external disk)
If you have a better solution - please share! I suppose there are other tools out there which may correct the file structure with less side effects and no errors.
If you go for this solution - remember the author of multiAVCHD, he will surely appreciate a donation. I guess everybody will agree that this is worth at least as much as you paid for your SDHC card.
Why a function to correct faulty file structure is not included in iMovie and FCE is beyond my understanding!
I notice many users salvage their footage by converting the .MTS files, using Handbrake etc. But I believe rebuilding the file structure is faster and with no quality reduction.

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone is still subscribed to this and can help.
I have a Sony HDR-SR10. Yesterday I was able to connect it to my iMac by USB and view all the footage in the import window of iMovie (08).
Last night, to save time sorting at home, I took it to work with me and using the software that came with the camera installed on a Windows PC went through to see which files were rubbish and could be deleted before importing to speed up the transfer on to my mac.
Today, my Mac won't recognise the Camera!?!?!?!
Have I inadvertently reformatted the .MTS files or the camera itself, to windows or something? CanI change it back??
I'm currently creating a new disk image of the camera on my Mac in the vain hope that it will work and be recognised by the Mac as a camera. I can see from the progress box the following text:
    Creating Image "Sony Camcorder Media.dmg"
    =====Progress Bar=====
    Reading (WindowsFAT32 :1)...
Which is why I think I've done something seriously wrong!! .. because it mentions windows!
    HELP! HELP! HELP!
I have my entire honeymoon and the first year of my son on this camera and I want to edit with iMovie! Especially as I just paid for iLife 09 upgrade!

  • HT200166 I have a Canon XL2 that will not capture video properly in fcp 10, where it does capture properly in fcp6 and 7. How can I "fix" fcp 10 to do this correctly?

My Canon XL2 (1394/firewire 400) will not capture correctly in fcp10, but it did when I had fcp 7 on the same computer. Is there a software fix that will allow me to use the XL2 with this program?

I just want to get this clear.
With FCP 7 and earlier you could capture a whole tape in one continuous 60 minute long clip.
FCP X cannot do that. It is designed to split the tape into its individual clips, however long they may be.
Are you saying that when you try to capture clips of 10 seconds or so, it only captures the first 4 seconds?
All I can suggest is that you trash the preferences with this free app.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Sony Handycam HC96 will not capture in Premier CS4

We have a lot of film on a Sony Handycam DCR-HC96.  Premiere CS4 running on a MAC sees the camera for control purposes, but will not capture video from it.  Since the Handycam only has Firewire 400 output, we are running through a 400 to 800 adapter to get to the Powerbook Pro.  Any ideas why Premiere will not capture video from this camera??  Any idea what settings to try??
    Thanks

Is the Record button active, or greyed out?
With some cameras, you have to hit the Record button AND THEN the play button to commence capture.
Failing that, you could try hitting PLAY on the camera itself, and then try to activate the Record button in the Capture window.

Unfortunately, you have posted to the Premiere forum. This was the precursor to PrPro. The MOD's will probably move this out to the PrPro forum, where you will get more comments. Do not be surprised, when your post appears in the PrPro forum.

  • What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

Rather than convert, you'd be better off capturing with a more current version of the program -- one that supports AVCHD video. Otherwise, you're in for a lot of headache. A converter isn't going to solve your problems.
BTW, when you say Premiere 6, do you mean Premiere 6 -- which is over 10 years old? (There was no Premiere Elements 6.)
Trust me on this: Capture with a Mac version of Premiere Elements 11 or 12 and your video will be perfectly compatible with any Mac program.

  • DVCpro 50 Deck shows up but will not capture

I can (finally) see the deck (SD93p) in my capture window and watch the footage, but it will not actually let me capture, it continues to have a "general error". I'm using FCP 5 and have the set everything up for DVCpro 50 (24p) Anamorphic, but something's missing. Can anyone help?

Your deck may not be showing you what code is on the tape. Is it set to display timecode?
The code you see in the top of the Capture Window what's coming from the tape. Changing that number will not do anything. If you want to enter an in, do it using the I key while the tape is playing or enter the code you want in the bottom left window of the capture screen.
If you are trying to use Capture Now, you must let the tape run until the TC is rolling before you press Now.
Better still, try logging a test clip to see if that works.
Play the tape, let it roll for 10 seconds then press the I key. Let the tape roll for another 10 seconds then press the O key. You have now marked an in and out.
Next press the F2 key (or press "Log clip" in the capture window) and a dialogue box will appear, name the clip and hit enter. You have now logged a clip.
Next, select the clip that you just logged, it will be the one in your browser with a red line through it. and choose Batch in the capture window. Does that work? If not, what error message do you get?
Another thing to make sure is that the tape you are trying to capture was recorded DVCPRO 50 since that is how you set up your capture preset. If it was recorded DV then you won't be able to capture till you change the preset.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • My FCP 5 will not capture video any more. How do I get it back

I have a 2005 G5 operating on version 10.5.7. I have *FCP 5*. I do a lot of video editing and have been using this system since 2005. I have *4 gig Ram*. Suddenly it won't capture and when I try to go into that mode I get a message: *UNABLE TO INITIALIZE VIDEO DECK*. My cameras are a new *Canon XH-A1S and a older Canon XH-A1*, they both won't initialize. So I uninstalled all FCP software and reloaded only to get the same message. I now have 20 hours of tape waiting to be edited.
    *+_PLEASE HELP_+*

Did it. No luck, However while repairing my permissions four of them came up: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
There's one for "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiscManagement etc and "sbin/umount" and "usr/bin/quota" On all of the other permissions it says they "differ". Anyway it didn't help and I did it to my two internal hard drives.
iMovie will upload and control my camera but I'm capturing much of it in electric green and pink. Boy am I confused. It's not like I'm a novice, I've been doing this for years. This is driving me nuts. I'm worried if I were to purchase a new FCP it still wouldn't capture (not that I could afford it)

  • FCE will not start

I do not use my FCE much, but the other day I tried to use it and it will not start up. When I go to open it, the splash screen shows and it goes though loading audio filters and loading video filters then it just stops and closes. It does not progress further than that.
The last time I used it, I had 10.5.1. Since then I upgraded to 10.5.3 and used xslimmer to reduce my applications. In case xslimmer somehow broke FCE, I have installed the 10.5.4 combo update and reinstalled FCE. However it still will not start.
I'm close to making an appointment with the apple store, but I want to try here first. Any ideas?

I manage FCE in computer labs, and find that I must launch it once as the root user before it will work for other users.
I'm guessing you are an admin user of your machine, but whenever someone says FCE won't launch, this is the first thing that comes to mind for me.
So, perhaps try logging in as root to see if it runs! Or even log in as some other user, just to see if it will launch.

  • FCE will not open!?

    Hi!
I have just bought Final Cut Express, and i received it for 10 hours ago.
My problem is that when I have installed FCE and I try to launch it, it will not open!?
does anybody know what to do?
and there is also something that I think i wierd, when I install FCE I dont have to enter any kind of serial number. is that normal.?
    /Dennis

OKay.. I have downloaded and I have run the program to remove every Final cut things!
and this time when I installed Final Cut Express I had to enter the serial number ..
So that proplem is solved now!
But I still can´t open it.
I tap on the icon (Final Cut Express) but it just says "the program closed unexpected" (I am from Denmark I can´t translate it perfect)!
I can upload a video on youtube of what is happening, if that will help you?
or do you have any other solutions???

  • Premiere Pro CS 6 will not capture 1440 x 1080i footage through firewire.

Every time and without exception, whenever I attempt to capture 1440 x 1080i footage from a Sony camera, the application will crash and close.
My capture settings are as follows:
    1) Capturing to external HD
    2) DV/ HDV Device Control and
under "Options" I choose a standard
Sony device being that my camera
    (HVR-Z1U) is not listed.
    3) Using firewire 800
What's going on here? Is there something I am doing wrong. Or is this a bug. Everything else captures fine. For example when I use a Panasonic
DVX or HVX it works perfect.
    Please help.
    Thanks

Thank you Bill, the external HD is connected through high speed usb.
HDV through firewire is not supported. Hard to believe but the response came from Adobe.
Ashamed because I love their products. Oh well.
Judging by the approximate release date of that Radeon HD 6770M (mid-2011) that best USB speed that you have is USB 2.  That is not adequate speed wise for any video editing.
I do not know who you talked to at Adobe but here is a paragraph from CS6 help:    Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Capture HD, DV, or HDV video:
    Capture DV or HDV video
You can capture audio and video from a DV or HDV device by connecting the device to your computer with a FireWire cable. Premiere Pro records the audio and video signal to the hard disk and controls the device through the FireWire port.

  • FCE will not recognise or capture from AC-DVC30E camera!

    Hello,
I am trying to capture footage (DV-PAL 48k anamorphic) from a Pan AC-DVC30E camera into Final Cut Express, but a message appears unable to locate device. I have tried every DV setting available and bought a new firewire cable to check it wasn't the firewire connection. Any ideas?
    Thank you.

thank you for the quick response David. It is set to VCR and AV in/out settings in the camera are set to DV Out - 'On'.
I have attempted to capture with the camera plugged into a power source - unfortunately this hasn't helped.
I must be missing something, just cannot work it out!
