FCP 4.5 files "too new" to open in 5.1

For what it's worth, this is definitely a bug in my opinion. I have several 2-year-old projects which I have been asked to restore for some minor changes and remastering. I am gettin the "too new" message on these files. These project files are coming from my backups, and have not been changed since August of 2004. They were definitely saved from FCP 4.5. I have tried opening them on four different machines, both Power PC and Intel. All of our systems here have already been upgraded to 5.1 - I may have to find a machine with 4.5 to try that.
There must be some scrap of code in these 4.5 project files which are not recognized or supported in FCP 5.1, which keeps FCP from recognizing the version - it doesn't think the files are acutally too new, FCP just doesn't recognize something in the files, and can't describe the error any other way.
Any suggestions would be helpful, but I am suspecting the only way this issue will be fixed is through an FCP update which specifically addresses this issue.
My system is a non-intel dual 1.8 G5.

the only thing i might suggest is check your current version ... FCP 5.1, 5.1.1, and 5.1.2 all use different project formats (or at least 2 different kinds) - are you the most current ie 5.1.2. i know it doesn't make sense, but that doesn't mean it might not help you ...

• File Too Big to Open?

I have a ~26 MB CSV file, which I had wanted to open in Numbers 09. But when I did, Numbers displayed the Opening dialog box, and then said that the file can't be opened because it was too big. How can I work around this and open the CSV file?

CSV is a text file, so if it's a spreadsheet, it likely exceeds the 64K row limit for a Numbers table.
You might be able to open the file in TextEdit, then split it into smaller pieces which you will be able to open.
Or it may be possible to open the file using either NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org, both of which can be downloaded from their respective websites (linked to the names in this line).
Make a copy of the file to try these with.

• Reinstalled software - error message file too new to support this version of the application

program was not rendering files in the timeline so i reinstalled the program.
reinstalled software, tried to open project i was working on and error message read: file to new to support this version of the application.
reading the maunual in advance, had recommended updating software prior to installing the program....
what to do??? need to continue working on the project...

You can't get it to upgrade to 4.01 (the latest/last version)?
Should be doable through Software Update, unless you have either moved or renamed the FCE app from its original installed position.
Also try using disk utility to fix permissions on your system drive and try the update again.
Often times when you re-install the software there are legacy files left over from the previous installation. this might be the problem.
Consider downloading FCS remover (free) from Digital Rebellion:
http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
and the re-installing your FCE software from disc and then trying the update.

• File is "too new" to open with the same software I used to make it.

After the external hard drive that held all my project files crashed, I tried to open the autosave backup file that was saved to my laptop only to receive a message that this file is from a more recent version of FCP. This is odd since I only have one copy of FCP that has never been updated as it is a student version... Any ideas how this might happen or what I can do about it?
Thanks,
Kevin

Disconnect the media drive, then launch the project...see if it opens. When it does...IF it does, then save it as a copy, turn on the Media drive, and launch the copy.

• Keynote file too large to open

I have a huge keynote file. over 300MB that I used for a day long course. Since upgrading to newest version of keynote I can no longer open it - I get a message that reads "you need a newer version of keynote to open the presentation'. I have the current version. Google searches suggest it is too big, and that is the reason for the message. Sooo....
1. Is there a way revert the deck so that I can open it and resave it into smaller modules - to then open in the new keynote?
2. If not, how would you recommend I access the content?
Would love some suggestions.

right click the file and select;    open with > Keynote 6.5
if this works, right click the file > select get info > in the open with drop down menu select Keynote 6.5 and click change all
drag the older version out of the dock

• When I try to access an active link from a website (usually a pdf file), the new tab opens and is labeled correctly; the word "done" appears at the bottom; but the page does not open or download. The same problem does not occur with Chrome.

Example: on the home page of the website http://www.dot.ri.gov
there is an active link entitled "Overview of all Iway changes - Fall 2010"
Clicking on it exposes the following url:
http://www.dot.ri.gov/documents/iway/Iway_Changes_Fall2010.pdf
However, the tab remains blank, even though it says "Done" in the bottom left corner.
When I use Google Chrome as a browser, I have no problem opening that url.
This has occurred numerous times over the past several days on several different sites--and usually the link that will not open is a pdf file.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

• HD FCP project won't open? File to new?

I captured HD footage at my school earlier. I got home to open it and an alert popped up saying "File format too new for this version". Is there a way to some how chage the file format to get it on my few month 'old' FCP?

What are the two versions you are using? It may be as simple as downloading a free software update.
If all you did was capture the video, and didn't edit anything, just import the video into a new project on your machine.

• FCP suddenly thinks files are too new

I am running FCP 6.0.5. I had been working on a project for quite some time, when suddenly one day I tried to open it and I got this error:
"This project is unreadable or maybe too new for this version if Final Cut."
I have made no changes to my system that would make this make any sense. If I don't get this file back I'm pretty screwed. I have read past forums about this happening with earlier versions of FCP, but nothing with 6.0.5. I tried the old solution suggestions like opening the project on another comp, and I also tried opening the file after creating a new user profile. Both provided the same error.
Is there any solution?

Yesterday I had this! With version 6.0.5.
I do not know exactly why it happened, but it happened like this.
On a server an other editor had three projects from a Projects folder open (and saved -not closed- 1 minute before, I checked), when I copied this folder to my LaCie in order to work at home on this projects.
When I got home all projects in the project folder opened except for the 3 files that were in use while I copied the folder...
No way to open them at home. The server with the original items opened the project without a problem.
So far. No solution given. Sorry.
What about your autosave Vault? I suppose older version open without a problem?
And OK, you'll need to reconstruct something. But that's better than nothing. Right?

• Error while trying to open a project I made on my computer/file format new

I am trying to open a project I made in June in FC. It is loading about 33% then a message comes up:
FILE'S FORMAT is TOO NEW FOR THE APPLICATION. Why is that? WHat should I do? It was made in my FCP on my computer.

What version of Final Cut Pro do you currently have?
Look in the Finder or at the FCP startup screen to find out.

• Can't open FCP 6 project file in FCP 7

Just upgraded to FCP 7 and have been working on a project for sometime in 6. Just tried to open the project file and i get the error "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut." Is there an update or fix for this? Luckily I can open on a friend's computer that is still running 6, but I thought it would upgrade project files with no issue. Can anyone recommend something? Thanks!

try opening on your friends computer and exporting an xml file and importing that into fcp7.

• File error - FORMAT TOO NEW

I am very stuck at the moment. I am helping a uni student with a project in edits and this " "File's format is too new for this version of the application" message comes up but I have made sure the FCP versions were the same and they are.
I have FCP Studio 2 - FCP 6 - brand new - and the FCP that the student used was the same. Some of the FCP files I can open but most I cannot. I asked whether he worked on more then one computer and he said yes but all versions are the same.
I do not have the internet on my MAC so I cannot do an update so is there any other ways to fix this?

You say your FCS is brand new, but you do not have Internet, which puts you several subreleases behind.
From 6.0.1. to 6.0.2 for example there is a problem because a project created or modified in 6.0.2 can not be taken back to 6.0.1.
Also check the version of Quicktime you both are using.
Working with FCS and WT without the possibiity to upgrade via internet will cause you more similar problems down the road.

• "File's format too new..." message

I am trying to open an FCP6 project started by another editor, and I'm getting a message that says: "File's format is too new for this version of the application". I am on FCP6.0.3, so I'm wondering if that editor is using FCP6 with Leopard and there is some version of the application I don't know about.
Please enlighten. Thanks.

Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 was not only intended for Leopard, but brought along many different features.
Take a look at the official Release Notes, and you'll see that it is noted that projects created in FCP 6.0.2 are not backwards compatible. D Gilmore gave you some good advice by telling you to have your editor export an XML file for you to import on your FCP 6.0.1 macine.

• File's format too new for this application

I am trying to use FCP6, which I just installed, on my new MacBook Air.  I have been editing in FCP6 for years on my iMac, and there are some projects I'd like to work on while I'm on the road, so I got a new MacBook for that purpose.  From the iMac, I was using an external drive to capture the footage and the fcp file is also on the external drive.  But when I hooked up the external drive to the new MacBook Air, I get the warning that "the file's format is too new to use with this application".  How do I solve this?  For what it's worth, the iMac is still on Mavericks, but the MacBook Air is on Yosemite.  Does that make a difference?

How did you do the installation of FCP6 on your new computer?
If it was from your original install discs, you may need to update the FCP6 that is on your laptop to a later version of FCP.6.
On your iMac, open FCP and once open go to the menu Final Cut Pro > About Final Cut Pro and look at your exact version number.
Then do the same for your laptop.
You may want to try migrating FCP6 from your iMac to your new computer to get the correct version on the laptop.
