FCP 4.5 HD & QT7 disables External Monitor?

I just installed QT7 and now I can't get my external monitor to work thru my ADVC-100 convertor. Anyone else have that problem and know a solution? Jon

What have you tried so far to get it working? For example, have you tried the widely publicized fix recommended by Apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

  • Disable external monitor

Is there a proper way to disable external monitor that was connected to my mac?
I used iDisplay on my iPad as an external monitor few days ago, and now it won't go away.
Preferences>display I can still see VGA display although my iPad is not on wifi, or even when my iPad is off. Right now, I have been using screen res x to resolve this problem temporarily, but there is going to be the proper way to disable it right?
my iPad resoultion is 1024X768, so whenever I restart my mac, it turns to 1024X768 during the login password and installing update which is not very pretty.

    anyone with the same problem?

  • FCP Problem with Firewire output to external monitor and speaker ???Help

i have a g5 powermac. the problem is when using Final cut pro 4hd. when i output my work through firewire to my external monitor and speaker i have a problem with the audio signal. Theres feedback/noise/hiss from the speakers. The firewire connects to DSR-11 vtr deck which feeds my monitor and speakers. it only happens when in FCP is set to A/V firewire output. does not happen if Video output is not set to firewire.
I Diagnosis is that it is not my dsr-11 deck or firewire i've ruled those out. The problem is either FCP software or Hardware problem with my G5
Does anyone have a similar problem. please respone, i will try to answer any respones,
    Thanks

From the firewire that feeds the dsr-11. on the output, i use s-video cable to my monitor (sony pvm-14l) and High Quality rca cables thet feed the audio to the Roland Speakers.
I've changed all wires and still have audio problem. I,ve changed my Dsr-11 deck to my camcorder and still have the problem.
If any of u guys use FCP The problem happens When I select view> external Monitor > and select firewire for Audio/ and video. I have never changed my editing habits, something just went wrong with the signal, I think its a Hardware problem with the firewire connection. I'm Going to have to bring this to a Apple Service Center In my local area one day.

  • FCP through to External monitor....Sound fine but video is still frames

    Hi everybody
In January of this year this problem was posted by Andy D.....
+No matter what combination of settings I choose I cannot get video to play on my HD monitor only a still of the last frame shows up. When I hit play the audio is loud and clear and then when I hit stop the final frame appears on the screen.+
I have this problem but only when the material in my FCP viewer, canvas or sequence is ProRes422 (I'd converted H264s to this before importing into project)! If the project is DV or H264 material that has been rendered by FCP, it plays on the external monitor fine but it seems if we start looking at the high end stuff like ProRes, back to sound but still picture.
I might add here that the path to my external Full HD monitor is through firewire to an ADVC100 converter and then composite cables to the input of the monitor. By the way the same thing happens with an SD monitor.
I haven't tried using my video camera as the link through to the monitor instead of the ADVC100. Would this make a difference? I'd be pretty happy if someone had a solution for this.
    Thanks in anticipation.

Unless the camera is a DVCPRO HD camera...like the HPX-170...this won't work. Not via HDV or AVCHD. Playout isn't as simple as it was with DV. There are far cheaper capture cards...Decklink Intensity Pro, Matrox MXO2 mini...but you need a MacPro for those (or with the MXO2 MIni, a laptop with an Express34 slot). An iMac is severely limited in what it can do.
    Sorry.
    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • FCP DV Output to External Monitor Quality Problem

Hi there, I'm using Final Cut Pro HD from Final Cut Studio 2, and I'm having a problem with the quality of the image on my external monitor. I have checked all the settings etc... for external video and they all seem right, but when I play the video in my canvas the signal into my camera lcd and onto my ntsc monitor is not correct. It plays the video; however, it also has a constant stream of large grey squares flashing across the TV. I would say 50% of the output signal is my video, and then 50% of the screen is taken up by these large moving grey squares.
I have all my windows fit to screen, I've choosen the Apple FireWire NTSC option in the A/V settings, and I have the all frames checked in the View tab.
It seems like only half of the signal is making it's way from FCP to my camcorder. At first I thought it was my NTSC monitor, but when I saw that the grey squares are also showing up in my camcorder's lcd screen I figured that it must be a problem coming from FCP.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

You'd think so, but I'd try another anyway...
Another thing that might be amiss is the power management on your Mac. There is a PMU button on the motherboard of your machine you can reset. You need to unplug it from power first however. It's under the fan you can remove to add RAM...

  • HT5019 Is there a way to disable the toolbar from preventing windows being dragged to external monitors configured above it?

My preferred display arrangement is to have 2 external monitors (extended display) above my macbook pro screen.  While it is possible to configure this in my display preferences, the toolbar on my desktop prevents me from dragging anything to the external monitors.  Is there a way to disable whatever the toolbar is doing to cause this?

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.

  • Using an external monitor with FCP Studio v. 1.0

I cannot get my external monitor to display my timeline editing window. I have made the right connections, with firewire from Mac to Sony HDV tapedeck, and with HDMI cable from tapedeck to LCD monitor, but the screen remains blank. The external video setting and the video playback setting both have the HDV 1080i options greyed out, so I can't click on them. I can only have 'none', or playback in full screen desktop. How can I activate the play out via the tapedeck to the monitor?

    Nickmarios wrote:
However, if HDV cannot be played out of FCP via firewire, how come I can capture from tape and export back to tape with firewire successfully?
Part of the issue is the Open GOP nature of HDV. Basically, HDV spreads the information for all frames within the time that you've pressed record to the time that you've stopped recording, and then crunches that down. This is way different than other FireWire-supported codecs, like DV, where each frame contains all the information needed by FCP to send a signal out to an external monitor at full resolution.
Sending out a full resolution via FireWire during HDV editing - where, most importantly, you're not obeying the GOP structure - would require fairly intense system resources, since it must reference other frames (sometimes many other frames). That's why you need a dedicated accelerator, like a capture card, to do that and send out a signal. As mentioned, FCP can send out a (very degraded) letterboxed 4:3 signal via FireWire, but it can't send out a full resolution signal.
Capturing, however, is a data transfer and much easier on your system. Open GOP is also the reason that long captures get broken up into individual shots (every time you start/stop recording).
Finally, as Shane mentions, the conform that FCP does prior to Print to Video means that FCP converts your timeline to abide by the (Open GOP) structure of HDV. As you've witnessed, that takes a fair amount of time.

  • Using FCP as a external monitor for Sony XD cam

I have a Mac Book Pro and a Sony XD EX1. I am hoping to use the laptop as an external monitor. I know this is possible because I saw it done at B&H... the guy used a cable to go out of the camera's iLink (HDV) output and into the laptops Firewire 400 input. I presume he then went to capture in FCP, but when I use easy set up for XD Cam I cannot get a picture up. Any suggestions?
    Much appreciated.

Was he using Scopebox or HD Monitor or some other app to facilitate capturing directly to a computer?
My understanding is that none those facilitate direct HDV capture, so EX1 capture is even more unlikely.
Also, have you set the capture prefs to noncontrollable device?

  • External monitor causes FCP to flicker

I want to connect my MacBook Pro to an external monitor, mirroring the laptop, and run FCP 6 there.  When I do so, the displayed FCP windows flicker severely when played, as if the computer is remembering the first frame FCP was at when the monitor was connected, and the playback flickers between that frame and the current frame.  There is no flicker when Play is stopped, and the display does show the correct frame.  Re-starting Play, the playback again flickers between that same original frame and the current frame.
Whatever resolution I set the display to, I get the same result.  This has happened on two totally independent external setups - one using an Apple external monitor, the other an independent projector.
    What should I be doing?

Not in this case, I just tried to mirror my displays on my Mac Pro and it did exactly the same thing as yours and I had to quit FCP to get it back to normal, strange, but why do you want to mirror your displays when you have the better option to edit with two screens?.

  • EXTERNAL MONITOR  - FCP 5 - G5 QUAD

    Hi everybody,
I am having problems with the external monitor using FCP 5.0.4.
I get no video signal at all in it. The screen mantains the usual desktop piucture .
I just moved to the Quad from a G4 where I used to edit with my external Monitor without problem.
My External Monitor is SONY DVI - and the Quad is plugged to it via one of the two DVI back connections of the Quad (as I used to work on my G4, meaning no fw).
On the VIEW> VIDEO PLAYBACK menu appears
CINEMA DESKTOP PREVIEW - MAIN as the only choice wich when selected turns my main monitor ( not the external) into the video output.
Of course I´d like to operate FCP via the Main monitor, and receive External Video in the External Monitor.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Monitor thru your camera or deck...
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • External monitor for FCP

I am looking into purchasing an external monitor for my iMac. The primary use would be to monitor the output of what I am editing in FCP, rather than have it be a secondary monitor (for dual screen editing). Currently my setup is an old 13" tv connected through a canopus converter, but I would like to purchase a flat screen and I am trying to figure out if I need to buy a flatscreen TV or just a flatscreen computer monitor. Hopefully this makes some sense--let me know if I can get away with the monitor instead of a tv!!

    Kim -
What does the canopus converter offer for outs? Composite? Component? HDMI?
You are on the right track. How important is it for you to have the BEST, most 'true' picture to view?
I'm gonna hang out a few people here...
Some folks insist on running their audio thru crappy speakers just so they can make sure the audio sounds good on run of the mill TVs -- YET insist on having only the finest high quality broadcast adjustable with isolatable blue gun fancy production monitor to CC their media.
    I say hogwash! (kinda)
Yes, you want a production monitor (for a number of reasons) to best set your broadcast luma/chroma. But are you broadcasting? Don't get something fancy if all you have coming out of the canopus is composite... I'd worry about getting the finest product with what you have first. Then worry about a new mac with a professional video card with a professional product with a professional monitor (audio AND video) setup.
    Help?

  • No Video PB on External Monitor/DV unit with FCP PlayBack

    Hello.
I just bought this Sony DVCAM unit today and I am having no luck with view External video from FCP. I have it connected with FW and had no problem with capture in FCP. I tried all settings on FCP external control and checked the Sony variables also. The Deck is a DSR-1500 record/PB DVCam unit from Sony. I never had problems with my DV Camera. I would appreciate some insight on this. I have FCP 4.5 and I have a small Video monitor connected to the Sony Video Monitor. I would rather view NTSC than computer monitor visuals. Thanks

Does the deck have an input switch? If so, set it for DV. I have the DSR-11 and it has DV/S-Video/Composite.

  • What do you need to get video output to external monitor

    Hello,
I'm fairly new to Color and have read a few posts that color can't be viewed by firewire to an external monitor. Basically what I have right now for external viewing in FCP is a JVC SR-VS30 Mini DV NTSC deck with firewire connected to my computer. From the deck it goes to a small TV set and a Sony Trinitron PVM color video monitor. What do I need extra to be able to see my color correction in Color on an external monitor. BTW in Color currently the Video Output tab in Setup>User Prefs is grayed out showing Disabled. I suppose that when I get whatever I need to see Color on an external monitor that this tab would NOT be grayed out or would I have to set some other settings.
    Thanks.

Well, you can waste a lot of time and money trying to get your old iron up to speed but the sad fact is, even though it may work with Color, it will most likely end in a less than satisfactory experience all around. You need to determine if your G5 has PCI, PCI-x or PCIe slots and then purchase the appropriate cards.
However, Final Cut Studio 2 is optimized for the Intel processors. You will see users here and there using the newest models G5 with great success but quite honestly, you need a Mac Pro.
Or just purchase the Aja IO/HD which is a firewire 800 interface and the only firewire device that will preview externally Color.

  • External monitor: problem to enable video output

    Hello,
I try to use an external monitor.
I usually use it by a camcorder and a Firewire PAL in FCP without any problem.
In Color, if I go in User preferences, Video output is set on disabled and the others (for example Digital Cinema preview or Firewire Pal) are all gray and I cannot set them.
    Thank you for your help.

    Luca,
Please refer to the included documentation. Color does not and will not send external video through firewire to any device, save one, and that is the Aja IO HD and then that device is limited to standard definition video only.
This "issue" has also been well covered in this and other forums: you need an input/output card manufactured by [Aja|http://www.aja.com/html/products_macintosh.html] or by [Blackmagic Designs|http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products>.
