FCP 6.0.2 - Capture Successful - Clips not saved! Help!

I'm running FCP 6.0.2 on OS X 10.4.11
I have a Sony HDR-FX1 camera and do most of my filming in SD DV.
I'm trying to capture footage on several tapes (about an hour per tape) using the Log and Capture method. The camera is plugged into my front firewire port. I've logged the tapes (as 1 hour clips) and have tried doing a batch capture several times.
Here's the problem:
The clip is captured for the entire hour and I'm presented with the message that the capture was successful. I proceed to click "Finish" and my clip stills shows as "offline" in the final cut pro browser. Also, when I look in my FCP "Capture Scratch" folder, the respective project folder is completely empty.
In other words, FCP is not saving my captured clips for some reason.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have and am willing to try anything at this point!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah - oddly enough, I don't run into this problem with shorter clips - just captured one that was 30 minutes long. But I really don't want to split these long clips up - it's easier to sync up the multiple angles when I'm dealing with clips that are all the same length.
You would think that if FCP encountered a problem while capturing these clips, it would give me some sort of warning - but no, it says successfully captured and then just doesn't save the darn clips! So frustrating to sit here for an hour watching it capture and have nothing to show for it. It's failed 8 times so far (that's 8 hours I'll never get back!)

  • Clips not saving

I have been working on a movie project and I saved my work many times. Before I closed the application I saved it again to my desktop just be on the safe side. When I opend Imovie to continue work on my project, the file could not open some of my clips. Most of my clips actually. A pop up message came up. Does anyone know why my clips were not saving? And is it possible to save a clip after its been cropped in a different location for future use?

I'm not clear on exactly what happened. What did the pop-up message say? What do you mean by "the file could not open some of your clips?" Were they not in the project at all, or would they just not play? Does this happen with other projects, or isolated to this one project? Have you updated or installed any software since saving your project? How much free disk space do you have? Have you noticed any strange happenings on non-iMovie projects? Are you running compatible versions of iLife software? If you can answer those questions you might get some more meaningful responses.
In any event, when iMovie acts weirdly it is oft recommended to do the following: 1) close iMovie and trash the file named com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new file upon relaunch. 2) Do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac hard disk.
Sometimes permissions get out of whack, particularly if you have downloaded any new software or done any upgrading. Some people have complained of problems with Quicktime upgrades.
Make sure that you have enough free disk space for iMovie to operate, 10-15GB. If your project was initially located on an external hard disk, make sure that the external disk is formatted for Apple. Should be MAC OS Extended or MAC OS Extended (Journaled). (But if you reformat, store all of your data on that disk onto another disk, because reformatting will erase all the data on the disk.)
You might need some computer maintenance or a disk repair (done from your MAC CD startup disks.

  • Capture time is not saved into JPG file! (LR 2.0)

    Hi,
I have this JPG file with no EXIF data whatsoever but I know it's capture time so I went to Metadata » Edit Capture Time and changed the capture time. Now, on Lightroom in the Library module, I can see the capture time there and then I save the metadata with Metadata » Save Metadata to File. However, when I check the file on Windows Explorer, the capture time (or date taken as named by Windows) is not specified at all.
Why isn't the "Save Metadata do File" working correctly?

    @William Porter
I don't have that box checked but it shouldn't matter because I'm not talking about exporting new files to update the metadata. I'm talking about updating the files metadata within the files that are already added to the library.
    @Richard Earney
That option was already checked from the beginning but it's not helping. That's exactly why I don't understand why this is not working.
Maybe a bug on LR 2.0 Final?

  • Xserv - user settings are not saved - help!

I've noticed that user settings do not get saved under OS Xserv...
Whenenver I login I get the default dock, with all the admin icons missing!
The desktop is saved in the root as /desktop/. (?!?)
When the machine was installed the first user was setup as Administrator (Admin) but it was deleted (against my sound advice) and since then things like the FTP server malfunctioned... The keychain seems to pop up a lot as well, and can't be opened / used. And the bookmarks don't get saved as well.
I'm assuming that user settings like the Dock should be saved somewhere.
    Please help!
Everything else seems to be running but loosing all UI configurations at log-offs is taking a lot of time which I currently don't have enough of.

    Anyone?
I was hoping that I'd get an answer through the forums.
I'll wait till next week and if there's still no post I'll contact Apple's Phone support.
Please post any suggestions - a Mac Server shouldn't be so fragile!

  • I am able to change and add bookmarks, but these changes are sometimes not saved when I restart Firefox.

Since updating to Firefox 4, changes to bookmarks are saved sometimes after restart, but not usually (maybe 25% of the time). The problem sounds exactly like what is described on the [[Bookmarks not saved]] help page, yet after making all the recommended changes, the problem persists. I have also performed the recommended actions on the [[Toolbar keeps resetting]] help page, with no luck there either.
The only other thing that I can think of that may be helpful is that I use Firefox Sync between two computers, and both seem to be having this problem.

I have some more information, in case it helps. During one Firefox session, I made about 8 changes to my bookmarks. When I restarted Firefox, the first few changes I had made were saved, but the rest were not. Additionally, the favicons that were present during my last session (that I hadn't had before that session) were reverted to the default favicon. I hope this helps!

  • DSR11 Not Recognised.   FCP Crashes When Log & Capture Selected.

I've recently had a quite traumatic period installing QT7 Pro to work with iDVD disk burning. During that period, FCP3 worked faultlessly. Succeeded at last with disk burning then shut down for the night. Next day went into FCP and found that my DSR11 was not being seen by it. Chose 'Continue' and tried to set things up through 'Easy Setup' in the usual way. Couldn't be done. Selected Log and Capture as a 'try' and FCP crashed, leaving me with the Desktop screen. Despite numerous attempts to create a connection with the DSR11, I always am getting the box telling me it cannot be found and giving the choice to try again or select 'Continue.'
I'm wondering if the QT settings were in some way corrupted as I shut down the computer.... I'd like some help in getting back the settings.
I downloaded the QT7 upgrade which afforded the correct running of FCP and iDVD disk burning but now I can't find any record of the prog and its key in order to re-install it. I looked in HD/Library/Receipts and could only find references to Flip4Mac and QT Packages - no QT references with numbers following. Since inplutting this post I've found that the last mentioned QT package is 7.2 so I tried reinstalling it but after going through the procedure it ends with a message that there were errors in the installation and that I should try reinstalling it again.... Well, after four attempts with the same result, I'm here, and on tenterhooks!
As an aftermention..... I also have used the DSR11 with my MacPro to successfully operate FCP in its normal way.

On the Apple website it specifically states that QT7.2 with OSX.4.10 (actually any system of 10.3.9 and above) is the best way forward for the most efficient result from my computer. In view of that, I've recently used their Feedback page to pass the information to them. Yes, I know it states that one can only use it for feedback and they will not entertain other than that but we should have the abililty to put back to them the sort of quandary I'm in over their OS and allegedly compliant prog - ie QT7.2.
I've now taken the bull by the horns, because there's no other way I'm going to get satisfaction with Apple's software which should be capable as stated, and I'm about to re-install QT7 then try once again. That's despite not finding those additional Receipt files for scrapping prior to the install.
I'll report back the result when finished and tested. If it again fails, Apple will get an official complaint regarding their software that fails after being bought when their advertising says it improves rather than fails.
    Thanks for your inputs.

FCP 10.1 DV capturing from camera breaking the scenes into unwanted clips by flashing a black screen on import window. But its fine and accurate with adobe premiere pro cc ?
    Any solution * Advance Thanks

FCP X will import into separate clips every time it detects a scene change (as when you stopped and started recording in the camera). There is no option to avoid this, as far as I known.
You may try importing from camera using Quicktime Player X and then bringing the imported file into FCP X.

  • FCE4 will not log and capture long clips.

FCE4 will not capture clips 3 min. or longer from a Canon HF100. It just gives an error mark at the end of the process with no explanation. The capture process freezes on long clips with the Canon HV 30. I can capture short clips with both but nothing over 3 min. Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, I use the log and transfer for the HF100 AVCHD. I have transfered and edited several 1-2 min. clips but I am trying to transfer a 9 min. clip and at the end of the transfer process FCE4 displays a error mark next to the clip with no explanation as to why there was an error in the transfer. I use the capture mode for the HV30 and I have also captured and edited 1-2 min. clips but the 9 min. clip freezes after a few minutes of capturing. I am using a Western Digital external drive with USB connection for the scratch disc. I have no problems with short clips just the 9 min. one. Any ideas. Thanks

  • Why can I no longer capture DV clips?

I can no longer capture DV clips that are useable. Is it a wrong setting or maybe bad hardware?
I'm logging and capturing clips as DV anamorphic (downconverted by my deck from HDV), and when I play back the captured clip, the image in the viewer isn't moving (at least not very much; a series of freeze frames, really). When I expand the browser window, I notice that the data transfer rate for the clip is only around 300 k/sec, whereas previously capture DV clips weigh in at 3.6 MB/sec. I know 300 k/sec is around the rate for RT Offline clips - but there is no evidence that the offending clips are RT Offlined. I've spent ten hours in the program and in the manual, trying to figure out how to correct this.
I also opened the captured clips in QuickTime, and then used "Movie Inspector" to determine that the clips as captured are bad; in other words, it's not just a playback problem. A healthy DV clip reads out at 30.31 mbits/sec; my bad clips are reading 2304 kbits/sec, or 2805 kbits/sec, etc. The FPS for the problem clips read 0.81, 1.20, etc., whereas the healthy DV clips read, of course, 29.97.
Oh, here are some other peculiarities: it takes longer than usual to complete the capture -- 10 seconds or so past the end timecode reading. And it always gives me the warning that there was broken time code in the sequence. And, it appears that audio track 2 is out of sync -- a several seconds later than audio track 1.
And recently, there's variation to the problem, where the first couple of seconds of the captured clip are a series of quick freeze frames; then, the rest of the clip is entirely black, with only the audio apparent.
I'm beginning to think it may be a hardware issue. It's not the deck, or the firewire cable, or the firewire port. I've switch them all out with the same result. I've trashed FCPro preferences and then reset them, with no improvement. I even reformatted by drive, re-installed the OS, and installed a different version of FCPRO. Same results
    Any ideas?

Sorry for any inconvenience; I'm new to the discussion process. And sorry for the delay in responding; I've been away and unable to follow through.
I'm still having the same problem.
I've tried two decks: Sony HDV HVR-M25U in downconvert mode; JVC BR-DV600U. Plus, I've tried my camera, Sony Z1U, also in downconvert mode.
The only other devices on the firewire bus are firewire hard drives -- essential to the operation.
I've tried Mac OSX 10.4.6 and Mac OSX 10.4.10. I've tried FCPRO versions 5 and 6.
It did not stop working after any updates or change in software.
I reset the capture to Easy Preset for DV with no success.
I didn't trash the preferences; but I did erase the disc and completely re-install the software -- twice.
My G5 does do one other strange thing. If I have the computer "sleep" mode activated, and the computer goes to sleep -- I can't wake it up for a couple of hours. I think that's a heat-related thing; this is the G5 that has 7 fans (or is it 9?). And I hear you can't start G5s if the sensors decide one of the processors is over-heated. If I shut off the computer, the same thing happens; I have to wait a couple of hours. My present workaround is that I just leave the computer on all day (deactivate the "sleep" option), and it seems to work fine -- unless this capture problem is somehow related.
I'm going to try to capture DV footage using iMovie -- once I get my hands on a version that works with Tiger. This might indicate whether this problem is software-or-hardware based. I'll update this message thread once I've been able to do this test.
Thanks for any further thoughts you might have!

  • How can I capture film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder into my computer?

I've captured film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder before so you can understand how frustrated I now feel not being able to do it today. I have just one 30-second clip on the memory card. It plays on my camcorder but I cannot transfer the clip to my computer.
I have an HP desktop computer that's two years old with plenty of hard drive space. I've tried capturing using the memory card inserted into the computer and I've tried using the USB2.0 port. Nothing works anymore. I used to capture with ease using Windows Movie Maker or Photo Gallery.
In the past when the capture was successful I would import the clips into Magix Edit Pro 16 for editing. I could never capture directly into this program though. I hope someone can help me out.

In Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery I click on Import From Device or Import Photos and Videos. A box appears but it is empty. The message above the box is, "if you do not see your device..." click Refresh. Refresh doesn't do it.
When I try to import with Magix Edit Pro 16 (a German video editing program) I get the message: "Magix could not connect to selected device."
I have run out of options. I don't know what else to do. This Friday I'm going to do some filming at a ballroom dance but I'm pessimistic about being able to capture the raw video to my computer.
This is an edit later in the day. Now I can capture into Photo Gallery and then into Windows Movie Maker or Magix. But I can only do this with the USB 2.0 connection. When I put the memory card into the computer slot, nothing happens. It used to work. Anyway, I'm glad I can finally do some practice editing again. I'm just in the learning stage with anything graphic.

  • FCP 7 No Audio Captured

Here is my Set up. I have a MacPro 10.6.1 Snow Leopard. Final Cut Pro all in put devices are connected through a AJA Kona LHi capture card and through the AJA KLHi box. When capturing, all the video is captured perfectly, but absolutely no audio is being captured. Nothing at all. No waveforms on the captured clips ... nothing. I can hear the audio fine during capture from the device, but it is not actually capturing the audio. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

How is audio connected to your breakout box? Are you able to see audio the audio meters move in the FCP Capture window?

  • Batch capture logged clips makes subclips that are invisible in sequence

    Any ideas?
I log a series of clips (the icon is the square master clip icon). They are offline until I batch capture. However, once I batch capture, they become subclips(jaggy-edge subclip icon). They can play in the viewer and they are viewable in Quicktime. However, once I put them in the sequence, they are only black, even after rendering. HOWEVER, if I do a capture now off of the SAME tape w/ the SAME settings it will play just fine (after render) in the SAME sequence.
Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance

Okay, finally able to do a couple of tests. I started a new project w/ settings for capturing good ol' NTSC DV, logged some footage and then batch captured (ntsc footage) -- no problem at all. The clips were clips, not subclips. Then I went into a project for DVCPro HD 720 30p, and pulled some clips from my original low res project into the HD project. Made those offline, then batch captured those at the full HD resolution. Not a problem there either. Then I went back into the original low res project, made a clip offline, recaptured it at full HD res, no problem. Soo.... I think there is some connection between what I've been capturing at my "low res HD" setting and the problem of turning the logged clips into subclips upon capture.
All that said...I think I'm ok. At least I know now when I do need to capture it all in full HD res, I'll be able to, and it will relink into my project correctly as visible clips.
Also, how can you mark somthing "helpful' if it has already been marked "solved"...it is not undoable, correct?

  • Abort Capture on Dropped Frames Feature is Not Saving Captured Media

I have searched for this specific problem here without any results. I'm simply capturing regular SD DV and am getting dropped frames. Even though the dropped frames is an issue that I shouldn't be encountering, that's not the reason for this post. The bigger problem is that FCP 6 is not saving the file prior to the abort.
The manual specifically states on page 308 Part IV " Abort capture on dropped frames: When this option is selected, capture stops immediately when a dropped frame is detected. All media captured before the dropped frame has frame-accurate timecode and is preserved. The resulting media file is saved and a clip for that media file is placed in the Browser."
Well the issue is, FCP is NOT saving the file to my hard drive much less it's NOT placing the clip in my Browser. I can spend 50 minutes and get a dropped frame and it aborts capture (that's what I want it to do) but the time spent capturing that 50 minutes of media is simple gone. Poof, no file, no nothing. So what gives, anyone else seen this problem?
I am up to date on all software.

Hi Michael, thanks for the feedback.
I have a MacPro 2.66 GHz dual-Core Intel Xeon with 5 GB of ram. Internal 250 GB system drive with an additional internal Seagate Barracuda 750 GB drive 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s drive Model number ST3750640AS which I have captured my previous project, and now am capturing only my 2nd project to.
Note: I have only captured 2 projects to date on this new Mac. The first project consisted of around 5 tapes which I captured each one using the CAPTURE NOW feature without any problems (with the exception of the reset timecode which FCP handled as advertised and stated below). So far I've captured 10 tapes from my 2nd project. So I still have well over 500 GB free on that drive.
I am capturing via firewire from a Sony DSR-11. I only use one brand of tape, the Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ. My cameras are 2 Sony VX2000 and one VX2100. I know for a fact that I need to replace the internal battery in my oldest VX2000 because every time I turn it on, I get a warning that I need to set the clock, and everything else has reset itself to default settings. However, this is not the camera that I have been experiencing timecode reset with. It's my other (not as old) VX2000. I don't use my cams to capture to the computer, that's why I purchased the DSR-11. With this camera, it will reset timecode frequently with the camera still powered on, but stopped (not pause mode). The tape is not being previewed or anything causing it to play past the preexisting recorded media which wold in fact cause a timecode reset as you stated in your last message. So I don't know what is wrong with this camera, I'm fairly certain the internal battery is good because it keeps time on it's own. I'm hoping it just needs a good cleaning, but I'm afraid it may be something worse. I'm getting ready to send it off for a checkup this week.
In any case, about 80% of the time, FCP has been able to properly detect timecode reset when it is encountered, and it does in fact pause recording, save the first file, and reposition itself to the new timecode and start recording a new file as advertised. The other 20% of the time it has simply paused the DSR playback, saved the file, and informed me that the tape has reached the end of the recorded media, which it hasn't but In these cases it's not detecting a timecode reset. I then have to press the stop button in my capture window to actually move the deck from pause to stop mode.
Now, the dropped frame issue on capture is a separate issue. According the the FCP manual (as I stated in my first post) it is suppose to abort capture, but still salvage what has been captured thus far, and it is not doing this. Thus far over the course of these first 2 projects on my Mac, I have only encountered dropped frames on capture twice, and both times while capturing from this 2nd project. The first time this happen, I was doing a lot of stuff in the background, i.e. checking email, browsing some web site, but nothing that consisted of playing video or audio, and I was doing some iChat (simple chat, not screen sharing or video/audio conferencing or anything like that. So I attributed my drop frame to the fact I was doing too much in the background. I then decided that I would NOT be playing around in the background any more while capturing. So I was quite surprised when I received yet another dropped frame notification at around 50 minutes. It did about capture as advertised, but it did not salvage the media it had already captured.
So... that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
Thanks for your time, I appreciate the help.
