FCP 6.0.2 Projects don't inherit ACL or owner group from parent folder

I am having difficulty sharing Final Cut projects between edit stations since upgrading to FCP 6.0.2 and Xsan 1.4.2.
I have 5 Final Cut editors (PowerMac G5s) that store project files in a folder called "Projects" on an Xsan volume. The editors are all logged in to Open Directory accounts on an Xserve G5 running 10.4.11, which also has the Xsan volume mounted.
I want all files created in the Projects folder by the editors to be writable by all other editors, I don't really care if I use POSIX permissions of ACLs to get the job done.
All editors are members of the OD group "staff" which has full control (via an ACL) of the Projects folder and is the owner group of the Projects folder.
From any of the computers, logged in in as one of the editors, I can create a text file in the projects file (echo "test" >> test.txt), and ls -le shows that "staff" is the owner-group of test.txt, and the staff/full control ACL is attached to the file.
If I save a Final Cut project in the Projects folder, there is no ACL attached to the file, and the owner-group is "wheel."
This worked as expected under FCP 6.0.1, Xsan 1.4.1, and OX X 10.4.11. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
-Chris

I'm not sure if this is applicable on Xsan, but about a year or so ago I was having a similar problem on a server share. Turns out the problem was that I had R/W permission for the 'editing' group on the folder, as well as an ACL giving 'editing' Full Control access to the same folder. Did some research and found out there was a bug that if the same group is in the POSIX permissions as well as the ACL it caused problems much like what you are having. I would assume/hope that this has since been fixed in past OS X Server updates, but I don't know for sure. Give that a shot and see if the problem goes away. Just thought I'd throw out my two cents...

  • HELP!!!!!  FCP won't read project!

    Alright.
Here is the synopsis of my problem:
I was having trouble with Soundtrack Pro: stalling, extremely long process times, unexpectedly closing etc... I was told to delete Soundtrack Pro and to reinstall it. So, I deleted Soundtrack Pro from my Applications and Dock and then inserted the FCP Studio Installation CD. It asked me to select the program(s) I want to install and Soundtrack was the only available choice since the computer recognized I had deleted it.
I then followed all the installation instructions and inserted every CD part of the installation pack (to my surprise it asked for all of them even though I only need to install one program).
After everything was done installing, I reopened FCP to open my project and preceded to send it to Soundtrack Pro. I COULDN'T EVEN OPEN UP MY PROJECT. The FCP opens but when I try to open my project I get a message saying "FILE FORMAT IS TOO NEW FOR THIS VERSION OF THE APPLICATION".
I don't understand. It is the same software that I originally installed.
PLEASE HELP. I AM WORKING WITH A CLOSE DEADLINE!
    THANKS!

It is the same software that I originally installed.
Could it be that there was an minor update to Soundtrack that is now missing?
Sometimes those updates are not directly obvious and come bundled in a ProApps Update package. Reinstalling might have taken you back to an earlier version.
Look in Hard Drive/Library/Application Support/Pro Apps. There should be a file called "Soundtrack Pro Integration.bundle" does the version # correspond to the # of the Soundtrack application itself?
Also compare the version # of receipts file(s) in Hard Drive/Library/Receipts.
This will take some time to sort out. FCS puts lots of files in odd places and some are in invisible folders. Do you have the possibility of moving the project to another computer? That way you can at least get the job out of the door first.
Another idea, although it might not be entirely free of risks:
Move the receipts for Soundtrack and ProApps Udates to a folder on your Desktop. Launch Software Update. It will now think that those updates never happened and should offer to download and install them. The installer knows where the various components go and should only replace the parts that are missing.

  • Exporting .avi from FCP 3 / Opening FCP3 project in FCP 4

    Hello,
I am currently working on a project in FCP 3. I need to export an .avi-file for use in Adobe Encore on a pc. I have done this before and used the DVpal codec which worked ok, but with this project the image quality is not ok, mostly there seem to be small jumps in a sequence (is on the verge of not running smoothly.. sorry, hard to describe).
I tried all the other codecs I have (BMP, Cinepak, DVCPRO-PAL, DVCPRO50 and no compressor) and all either gave inacceptable image quality or the film does not run smoothly, or took several hours for rendering a 3 minute film.
Can anyone recommend a codec that gives decent image quality and does not take hours for rendering (I am working on a G3 900Mhz ibook). Is there maybe an mpeg2 codec I could use so that I could avoid recompressing in Encore?
I also tried importing the project into FCP 4 on a G4 1.5 Ghz Powerbook but cannot open the file. Is there any way to convert the project to FCP 4? I read about using the XML export for transferring from FCP 4 to 5 or vice versa, but FCP 3 does not have the XML option.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know better than you, Randy, but I do have strong opinions.
OS X does tend to avoid file fragmentation, but that can only do so much, depending on how full the volume is and how much file deletion has taken place.
If the volume is very full, and you can't delete enough data to trim it down, the best thing to do is move/copy all the data to another volume, wipe the 1st volume, then move/copy all the data back. This is usually faster than using a defrag utility.
For best performance, keep your volumes less than 60% full. But I know guys who regularly run at 90 and 95% full without issue. So, go figure. And I know that conventional wisdom says to try to keep volumes less than 80% full. The thing is, when you benchmark a volume with a utility that measures throughput on the outer, inner, and middle tracks separately, you find that most hard drives will slow down when more than 60% full. NOTE: Not slow down terminally, but slow down by 10 to 20 percent or so.*
But the real answer to the defrag question is, don't worry about it . . . as Randy said.
    * If you do the math, you'll find that the read/write heads are exposed to about 1/2 of the surface area on the inner tracks as on the outer tracks in a given amount of time. FWIW.

Can a premiere pro CS6 project done on a pc be opened by PP CC2014 on a mac without manually relinking every asset? Relinking would take longer for me than just recutting my colleague's footage.

Use the Project Manager to collect all of the assets on the PC. Then use that to start your editing on the Mac.

  • Updating projects done in 5.5

I am not able to open projects done in 5.5 in version 6.  I tried to copy and paste slides from an older project to a blank one in version 6 but it gives me an error response.  How can I get my 5.5 projects to open in 6 so that I can update them?

    Thank you.
I feel very stooopid as it is working today no problem.  I’m in Windows.  Can’t figure out why it wouldn’t let me do it before as it is quite intuitive, although I’ve been having a few other problems because the PC I’m using is older.
While I have your attention though, I am hoping to switch to Mac.  Will I be able to send files to myself from Windows and convert to Mac or will I have to update anything originally done in Windows always in Windows?
    Thank you,

Share your GarageBand iPad project to iTunes as a project. Then you can import it into GarageBand and upgrade it to a GarageBand Mac project. And Logic can open GarageBand for Mac projects.

I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening ... it shows when you right click on the mail icon that " application not responding"

If your hard drive is getting full, you need to free up, at least, 20 GBs of space on your iMac's hard drive.
If your Mac is running a fairly recent version of OS X, here are some general guidelines.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it run the automatic ans S.M,A.R.T. tests,  then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the tabs that have the ability to clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • "Inherit Permissions From Parent" doesn't work

In OS X 10.5 server, selecting the option for an AFP share to inherit permissions from its parent does not work for users on OS X 10.3. All files created by users running 10.3 have 755 permissions, regardless of the parent folders permissions.
Clearly, this rather dramatically reduces the utility of AFP in 10.5 Server for anyone with users running OS X 10.3.
OS X 10.3 server did not have this problem.
Manually propagating permissions is futile for two reasons. First, the needed set of nested permissions is complex enough that propagating them manually would take hours, and secondly there would be intervals between the propagations when documents would not be accessible to the right people.
    Consider a drastically simplified example:
Imagine a share named "Share" with a folders inside it named Admin. Inside the Admin folder might be two additional folders named Accounting and Personnel. Inside Personnel there are folders named Performance Review and Forms. It would look like this:
    Share
    -- Admin
    ----- Accounting
    ----- Personnel
    -------- Performance Review
    -------- Forms
Now consider several groups: Employees, Accounting, HumanResources
Employees should have read write access to Share, and everything under it unless more restrictive permissions are explicitly created. Only the Accounting group has access to Accounting, and everything in Accounting should only be accessible to Accounting. Performance Reviews should only be accessible to the HumanResources group, but Forms should be accessible to all Employees.
Now a member of the employees group saves a new file in the Forms folder, but the group doesn't have, and needs, read/write privileges. To fix this the permissions from Share can't be propagated to all the files and folders inside it because that would nuke the special privileges for Performance Reviews and Accounting.
It might be conceivable that every n minutes a script could run that would recurse, depth first postorder, through the hierarchy assigning all files in each folder the permissions of the enclosing folder, but there are at least two problems with that. First, it would be slow and between runs the files wouldn't have the right permissions. Second, sometimes we might want a file to have special explicitly specified permissions that differ from the parent, but it would be terribly cumbersome to specify the exceptions for this sort of script.
POSIX behavior also doesn't solve the problem because it will set the same permissions as we're seeing already, there's no obvious way to change the default permissions, and doing so would have security implications elsewhere on the server if that "umask"ish setting couldn't be specified exclusively for the share.
Inherited permissions would solve the problem, and have solved the problem under past versions of OS X server, but they don't work on 10.5 with 10.3 clients.
Does anyone know of a workaround or have any additional details?

glad someone else is experiencing this, I'm having the same problem with inherit from parent.
I was going to start using inherit because Leopard has ruined ACL's, Leopard clients don't honour the deny delete subfolders and files ACE, basically the leopard permissions systems seem to be flawed

  • Delta Linked object: reset attribute to inherit from parent

    Hi all,
I inherited an ESS system where the SAP content had changes made to it.  The SAP supplied Employee Self-Service Role had some of the worksets set to Invisible in Navigation Areas.  I would like to clear the indicator that says that attribute is defined locally and have it back to inherit from parent.  Then I can make the Invisible change in the delta linked role in our custom content folder.
Is this possible without a program?
    Thanks
    --Amy Smith
    --Haworth

    Hi Gopal,
That would seem to make sense to me too.  I have one question about that that you may be able to help with.
The role I am working with is a delta linked role that points back to the ESS role.  I can remove a workset from my delta linked role.  Later we will want to put that workset back in the role.
I can link it in pointing to the ESS workset, but the delta link trace will look different and anything done in the ESS role to that workset will not be reflected in my custom role.  So is there a way to tell my delta linked role to undelete the workset so it is still linked back to the ESS role.
    Does this make any sense?

    Hi Mark,
According to your description, my understanding is that you got a permission issue when you emailed
     from a site mailbox.
    From the From address
[email protected], whether you are using Office 365.
By default, email sent from the site mailbox has a From address of the individual who sends the email. To allow a user to use the site mailbox email address as the
From address, you can give the user Send As permission for the site mailbox email address.
The permission seems to be for Exchange level, not SharePoint. So, please grant Send As permission to the user.
