FCP file sizes are twice the size of Quicktime's - any advantage to FCP?

When I capture footage from my Canon HV40 MiniDV using FCP, the file sizes are almost twice the size as when I capture using Quicktime's Device Native setting. Is there any advantage to capturing with FCP, as the quality seems the same in QT? Or is there a way to reduce the file size being captured in FCP?
I'd like to be able to capture in FCP because if there is a dropped frame in the recording, Quicktime stops recording, whereas FCP keeps going and starts a new file. But the larger file size in FCP puts me off.

Not all codecs are editable...meaning, not all work in an editing application. I'm not sure what "device native" captures as in QT. Does it say in GET INFO? But FCP captures HDV and DV native, but in a native format that it can work with. HDV comes in as HDV...Dv as DV.
I wouldn't trust what QT is capturing as DEVICE NATIVE. And 13GB/hour of footage is not that much. That's the lowest data rate format out there.

There is no difference in the two files. They are both DV Stream (.dv).
If you look in the Movie Properties window you'll notice that both tracks (audio and video) have the same file size.
Obviously, this can't mean that the audio track is really as large as the video track in data size. It means that the only way QuickTime can "separate" the stream into two editable tracks is to duplicate them (but ignore the video playback of the audio track portion).
I don't use Final Cut but I would suspect it might make two files (audio and video) instead of a single file made by QuickTime Player Pro.
    Confusing, isn't it?

  • Previous saved bookmarks.html files were almost twice the size. If I rely on this much smaller folder for saving my I may lose bookmark data. Can someone explain why my folder is now suddenly so much smaller?

Since I upgraded to 3.6.3 my bookmarks folder has become nearly half the size upon exporting it in html format. I normally refresh my working copy of Mozilla by saving the bookmarks and then erasing all aspects of Firefox and starting over from scratch. I am concerned that if I rely upon this smaller folder I may be losing data. Can someone tell me what is happening here? It could be that this is just an improvement in Firefox but I do not know how to test the waters to see if all my data is saved.

Are you comparing the size of the bookmarks.html file that is exported from Firefox 3.6.3 to a bookmarks.html file that was exported from earlier versions of Firefox?
Really shouldn't be a difference, there hasn't been a change to Firefox regarding the bookmarks.html file in years.

  • Photoshop files twice the size they actually are & Crashes for no reason (CS5 on OS X Yosemite)

After upgrading to Yosemite, my adobe products didn't work. I upgraded some java plugins and was able to solve the problem on both of my computers. Now, about a month later, my Photoshop design files are twice the size of data Photoshop says they are. I do alot of graphic design at 300 dpi, so I understand the size these files should be, and a file that used to be 25 MB is not like 127 MB for no reason. And when trying to add an irregular paper size, Photoshop has started crashing due to NSInvalidArgumentException:
Anyone have ideas to fix this issue? I can't find anything about this online. Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this!

First of all: You rock for responding so quickly! Thank you.
So your thought is, I should wait it out and Apple will probably take care of the issue? I do "send report" when the crash happens.
Do you think there is a save option I'm hitting (and don't know) causing the files to be so big as .psd? Even when their flattened, I can't get the sizes down to normal. I haven't changed what I'm doing, and all of the sudden each design file is ending up in the hundreds of MBs instead of around 25MB or less.
I really appreciate your expertise on this!

  • Why is Data Size in QT inspector twice the size of the file?

I am not asking this to save space. I am just curious. When playing a dv (captured from camera) clip, I notice that the QT inspector shows data size about twice the size of the dv clip size in file system. Is it because the dv is compressed and QT decompresses?
Actually, on clip in QT shows 22GB which is impossible to fit on a miniDV tape.

You'll notice that a DV Stream file has two tracks (audio and video) of the same size when viewed in QuickTime Movie Inspector or the Movie Properties window of QuickTime Player Pro.
Obviously the audio track shouldn't be the same size as the video track. There are separated from the single stream to allow editing.

  • Copied folder, twice the size.

I'm trying to copy a folder from one internal drive to another. It's about 170GB of video files, but ends up being over 240GB when it's copied. I went through the subfolders, some seem fine while others are twice the size. For instance a subfolder with 6GB of MP4 files, ends up being 13GB. Any ideas on why that would be?
I'm also getting the dreaded error -36 when copying to some of my external drive. Three seem to work fine, while two don't. I would think that the drives might be bad, but one was old and one was new. It was like they had infected each other.
    Thanks!

I may be way off base, but if the destination drive is bigger than the source drive, what you're seeing may be explained by the size of the "allocation unit" of the drives. There is a minimum amount of disk space that even the smallest file will occupy. On my 125 GB boot volume that minimum size is 4 KB. Do a Finder "Get Info" of one of the files on the source drive and the same file on the destination drive. Compare the "Size" values of each file (not the values in parentheses).

How are those external drives formatted?

  • IPhoto Preview Folder Twice the Size of Masters Folder

I am trying to back up my computer to a cloud-based server.  It is getting hung up on iPhoto each time.  The server team is looking at it but the representative noted that my preview folder is twice the size of my masters folder.  I have a little over 28,000 photos totaling 492 GB; the Masters folder is ~175 GB; the Preview twice that.  Is that normal?

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
But note the back up disk must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The size of the Preview folder seems odd. Look inside and sort it on size. What's in the biggest folder?

  • Are keys the same size regardless of the size of the MacBook Pro?

My Caps Lock key bit the dust, so I was shopping for one on Ebay. I found plenty, but they always mention the size of the laptop it's coming off of. I'm assuming that the keys are the same size regardless of the size of the laptop, but I thought it would be prudent to check with you guys first. Thanks for your help.

yes, they are all full size keyboards.

  • CC 2014 exporting files that are 0kb in size with h.264

Just upgraded to cc 2014 on a new system and been having troubles. This issue in particular is with exports being 0kb in size when using the h.264 codec. Any clues?

Premiere come with all the codec that you need.
If you want to export to divx (dont even think its possible anymore) then you need the codec.
Just by restarting the computer can fix things.

  • While trying to merge pdf files which are having the version 1.4 throws err

As per my business need i need to merge some pdf files. Among those files some are having the version above 1.4. I am using the api "oracle.apps.xdo.jar ".
While trying to merging the pdf files its throwing the exceeption like
" oracle.apps.xdo.XDOException: oracle.apps.xdo.template.pdf.exception.FatalException: The template seems to be in either corrupted one or newer version than PDF1.4 ".
If all of the files are having the below 1.4 version then working fine. But any one of the file have above 1.4 version then it is throwing the above error.
Please can i have the solution for this problem.

    Thanks for the response.
Sorry.there is no option to feed again into <1.4 version. cause those documents are already existed in database and i have to use the same documents to merge.

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes for Mac forums.

    Kevin-
You say you uploaded the pictures to the iPad?  Then they should still be there, and you can copy them to your computer through iTunes.
There are utility programs for a computer that can recover deleted files from hard drives, and they may work for camera memory cards as well.  I've used DiskWarrior for Macintosh to recover pictures from an SD card before.

  • My Captivate 4 files are 10x the size in Captivate 6

    Hi,
I am trying to upgrade from 4 to 6.
I load up old files and save them - this works fine for Capivate files based on PPT.
For the ones based on screen caprture plus audio, they bloat to about 10x the size. I can't deal with capivate files of almost a Gig!
    Detail:
    I took a project with 200 slides (128meg), and:
    1) Loaded into Captivate 6 and saved (728Meg)
    2) Cut it down to 5 slides in Captivate 4 (108Meg)
    3) In Captivate 4 I cut and pasted the slides into a new project and saved it (2.8 Meg)
    4) I then loaded each into Captivate 6 and saved it (15Meg)
    5) I repeated 2, 3 nd 4 with 50 slides and got 10x the size
Any idea what is going on?
    Hugh

Most likely it's because Captivate 4 was predominatly AS2 and "old architeture" whereas Captivate 6 is AS3 only.
There is a discussion here that shows the same problem:http://captivate.adobe.com/captivate/topics/captivate_6_file_size_bloat
If it were me I would probably try and convert my Captivate 4 project to Captivate 5 and then from Captivate 5 to Captivate 6 to see if that helps.
