FCP RENDER

SInce updating to FCP 6 we've been having trouble with the rendered files. If a sequence is duplicated and the name is changed I have to render again and the sequence doesn't appear in the render manager, same happens if I copy and paste onto a new sequence, clips are no longer linked to rendered files.
Also, even if the entire sequence has been rendered when it's time to edit to tape it takes around 20 minutes to write video. We never had these troubles before installing the update.
The project we're trying to put to tape contains uncompressed 10 bit files some captured via kona, and few using blackmagic. Other clips are animations rendered with apple 10bit and tiff and tga files. We are trying to output through kona to DB

I am having the same render problems after duplicating timeline in FCP6.
FCP6 is severlely loosing track of render files. Previous timeline will indicate that all files are rendered but in playback mode they all show up as unrendered. Trying to reconnect render files using manager is useless- button grayed out (even though I know all the files reside in the same render folders-nothing has moved since project started) Frustrating at best! I have reported the incidence to Apple many times to no avail.
Suggest using FCP feedback button- maybe someone at Apple will finally put down the iphone and take a look at pro users issues (don't count on it).
Take comfort knowing that others are experiencing the same missing and re-render misery as well. Output your project after rendering because anybody's guess what will happen on the next restart. My render files go missing everytime I duplicate the timeline. This only means that there is a definite bug in the application because these render problems never happened prior to this update. FCS2 has been nothing but buggy. Need updates ASAP!

  • Weird FCP Render Error PLEASE HELP

I just recently started getting render errors when i use Glow filters and Directional Blur, etc. it tells me [The Effect "filter" failed to render. i tried reinstalling FCP and trashing prefs, no luck. some one asked this question already and it was not answered. can ANYONE give some recommendations on why this is acting the way it is? its really sucking right now!!
    thank you!
    David

You might try changing the location of your render scratch, or checking the permissions on this folder.
Also, the FX Plug filters are supposed to use your video card to process, rather than the FX SCript filters, which are rendered using the processor. Your video card may not be compatible with all of the FX Plug filters.

  • Pixelated FCP Render of linked .motn file using LiveFont

I have a clip that I've used the "Send To" feature to open in Motion. While there, I added two bits of text using LiveFonts (blueprint and timer).
It looks crisp as can be in Motion. I save it, Apple-Tab back into FCP and get the momentary "Media Offline" while it updates.
In the canvas, the frames look every bit as good and sharp as in Motion. I then render the sequence and the results are hideous... but only on the "timer" font. I had the same results using the "flip counter" LiveFont. The "blueprint" font, however, looks fine before and after the render.
The same fonts rendered in LiveType look gorgeous. I can overlay them in Motion just fine. I can use them directly in Motion and export a lossless quicktime (Animation format) and they look fine.
If I use Send To, though, to take advantage of the convenient workflow, I'm required to render in FCP and the results are hideous.
Does anyone know if this is a common problem or if there is some kind of workaround?
Here is a link to a sample JPEG showing the canvas window and the rendered output in FCP:
    http://www.halfpress.com/images/font-problems.jpg
Keep in mind that these are two qualities are visible within FCP side by side using the same data. I choose a frame in my crappy rendered output, hit f to match-frame and am presented with pristine on the left and hideous on the right... but again, only for one of the fonts.
    Appreciate any help!

Thanks. Actually, that seemed to do it... or very close. I also tried the Animation codec and it appears to be an even more precise match to the Motion source than the uncompressed 8-bit.
I had ruled that out initially because exports I did from Motion itself to the DV format looked semi-cruddy, but nowhere NEAR as bad as what FCP was rendering. That made me start thinking FCP was internally hosing the source when it renders.
I will say that FCP is rendering the drop shadows differently from the Motion source than Motion is previewing and rendering internally.
So is this procedure of running the finished sequence through a new timeline with a better codec pretty standard?
Another thing I had tried before posting my original question was exporting my working DV sequence with Compressor to a better higher quality format to see if it improved. I was doing this to see if only the editing process looked bad and maybe it would internally re-render through compressor to a higher quality. It seems it just renders from the nasty DV source even when going through compressor.
Now assume I need to drop it in a new sequence within FCP using Animation or Uncompressed 8-bit, render, and THEN export to compressor?
Trying to ascertain if this is a hack/workaround or legitimately "the way things should be".
    Thanks!

  • FCP render slow on new Mac pro?

New Macpro does not seem any faster than PPC Quad.
Today I had to render out a 2 hour 20 minute program to Apple TV codec and it took 3 hours.
The FCP window itself seems sluggish on Hide and launch.
I checked Activity monitor and it tells me CPU=180 Real Memory=252 and V Mem=1.73
I have no idea how to read an activity monitor- does the reading seem normal?
I am running on the latest Macpro 8 core 3.0 with 16 gigs of memory.
I was told this would be super fast.
Why doesn't FCP use more of the available memory?
I always hear people say- buy more memory, but it doesn't seem to be speeding things up.
    User error?

FCP is a 32 bit application and as such doesn't make use of anything over 2.5GB of ram. Once you add in the OS frameworks it really only can make use of 4GB total. Ram beyond 4GB is useful in Motion for RAM previews as well as running multiple applications but it isn't going to make FCP any faster.
If you want to speed up codec conversions use Compressor and learn how to set up virtual clusters. You can set up 4 in your machine and each will act as a singular instance of compressor all working together to speed things along.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Why won't FCP Render?

I've used FCP for years...since it started. Never come across this problem. I'm editing on a Mac Pro Tower 2.8 GHz qd core intel xeonwith 6gb ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
I have FCP X and I'm saving all my files to a 2TB external drive.
This has all worked just fine in the past. Now, some files will not render. Only files which I have pulled from my desktop (like a pumpkin picture and a small .mov file rendered. Anything I brought in and all of my transitions, will not render.
I cannot, obviously, share the project either.
I've rebooted, powered down...unplugged...held the power button for 10...replugged...the whole 9....
    I'm stumped.
Any ideas oh Gods of Saving my Butt!!!

    Film Maker wrote:
well...that deleted my entire project and now it's no where to be found....
    No, it didn't.
Deleting preferences does not touch your libraries at all.
Are not seeing the project, or the library? My guess is that you simply don't have your library open in FCP X.
A library is a single file, that sits in your drive and can be opened and closed like most documents in other applications. File->Open Library... etc

  • FCP render files become unusable

We have 5 FCP sets connected to a XSAN environment. All sets are running FCP 5.1.1/OSX 10.4.7/XSAN 1.4. There are two Metadata servers running OSX server 10.4.7. The backup metadata server is also running as directory master.
Every set has it's own directory user (for example SET1). No local users exist. The set's users are joined in a directory group (SAN_users).
The XSAN environment consists of folders which belong to a certain project (for example COMMERCIAL_1000). The XSAN volume uses ACL to control access rights. The directory group (SAN_users) has the rights to do everything on the volume.
When a project is started on SET1, render files generated by SET1 become unusable if the project was openend on SET2. It's not that the same project is open on both sets at the same time. If you work with your project on SET1 on monday, and on thursday you have to work on it in SET3, the render files of the project are useless.
Does anyone have any suggestion how render files can be preserved?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GHz/2Gb/120Gb

So when you open the project(s) in question, do you get the reconnect prompt?...and does it show the render files in the dialog box?
I've seen FCP 'lose' render files in the past, but have never determined exactly why, and it's not been an issue to simply re-render. I'm sure it is an issue for you.
I don't know the decklink processes, so don't know if that is part of the problem. Hopefully others will.
Are you certain you've told FCP to send render files to the drive you expect them to be on?
Have you run standard maintenance procedures?...Trash prefs w/FCP Rescue, Run Disk Utility/Repair permissions...etc?

  • Fcp render stopped when Mountain Lion go to sleep mode

MacBook Pro powered from power source. Why Mountain Lion go to sleep mode when FCPX render active?

Example: I use Forklift app for long file transfers. After updating to Mountain Lion when i copied data via Forklift - system goto sleep. I wrote Forklift support about problem and next Forklift build was updated to work correctly in Mountain Lion. With FCPX is the same "problem"... Who cares?

  • FCP only utilizing .02 CPU on Render?

Since yesterday my FCP and Compressor have been going haywire. Originally my problems started when i was using compressor to render out a single pass.m2v and a 48:16 aiff, for a dvd to send out to my client. I have been doing this conversion for the past 6 months it takes no longer than an hour and some change. Well Thursday comes and i get the unknown time issue. At the same time though my FCP render time has quadrupled. Im using a 1st Rev MBP 2.16 15" with 2gb ram, connect via GigabitEthernet to a G5 i use as a server for my raid array. My raid is connected to the G5 via multilane to a PCI-E HighpointTech card. The footage i am working with is DV, and titles that have been converted to anamorphic .mov a show only takes about 20 min to render normally, however since thursday my computer is now taking 3-4 hours to complete a render, and during which is only utilizing .02 of the CPU. I am stumpped i have trashed the render files, trashed the preferences, and zapped the pram. I searched the forums but i couldnt find anyone with a similar problem, i am seriously about to just wipe my computer and fresh install everything

Im running 6.0.4 on osx 10.5.4, Thats what i originally thought the issue was, so i migrated all the media files over to my internal HD, and i still got the same results. After that i thought it was maybe something got tweaked in the sequence so i migrated a previous project over to my computer that had rendered out normally 3 days before, and to no avail it took 3 hours and 20 min. So at this point im thinking either there is an issue with my hardware, or gremlins are messing with me, because i cant think of a single thing. I really dont want to have to wipe and reinstall, that would set me back a full day, and right now my workload just wont permit that.

  • Render Times on FCP Not Accurate?

    Hi, <- My casual Greeting
Hopefully there are a few video editors out there on the forum... cause this one is program specific....
So I have been an avid Final Cut Pro guy for the last 4 years. I love the program.... I can work very easily in it but recently I got a new job in which I have been using both FCP and Adobe Premier.
Here is my issue... I have been using files that come in as MPEG 2 and have been using MPEG Streamclip to convert them over to a ProRes file for FCP. From FCP I have had to export them into 3 formats
    1. Mpeg 4 (the file format our website takes)
    2. FLV (Format for online video sites)
    3. QuickTime (XDCAM) for our tricaster
The last week I have been using FCP and my render times have been (for a 5 min clip)
    1. Mpeg 1 hour+
    2. FLV 20 min+
    3. QuickTime (XDCAM) 1 hour +
Yesterday I was told to use Premier as my boss uses Premier on a regualr basis and I assured him that the times would be the same as FCP is a Mac native program and that Premier was made to work on a mac but is essentially a PC program (I am eating my words now)...
I redid the renders on the same file...
On premier the render times were
    1. Mpeg 30+ min
    2. FLV 12 min
    3. QuickTime (XDCAM) 40 min
Why is this? Do I just have something really messed up in my settings that FCP is not rendering quickly and Premier is? I would hate to have to hop over to Premier... I enjoy using FCP way to much.
The other question I have is why are FCP render times not accurate...
The renders will start saying 5 min then 10 then an hour etc.... and the time will not be accurate. If it says 5 min it may go for an hour... or if it says an hour it may just complete while still telling me I have an hour to wait.
Adobe Premier, right off the bat, will tell me the frame it is on and the percent and time left... almost to the T.
If possible... please help me get my fcp back on the right track.
    Tim

Rendering can be much faster if you have a multi core intel Mac and you use Qmaster with Quick Clusters.
    Here's how.
Set up Quick Clusters in Qmaster. (A description of how to do this is in the manual and also can be found in the Qmaster forum here in the Apple discussions as well as out on the web.)
Export your sequence from FCP using "current settings". (Do NOT use Quicktime Conversion!)
Open up Compressor and submit your file. Add the three output elements.
Submit the file and click "use unmanaged services"
Go have a cup of coffee while all the cores chug away at things. I guarantee it will be faster than the way you are currently exporting (if you aren't using clusters)

  • FCP keeps dumping my render files

    I can't understand this. I am using FCP 5.1.2 on a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5
When I render video in my sequence everything is fine. The sequence plays, the red line above the timeline disappears as it should. Then when I quit FCP and then either immediately restart FCP or even some days later start FCP, everything is unrendered, the red lines are back and I get the media offline prompt to reconnect media. When I locate the media, the files are always in the trash. It seems to happen when I shutdown the computer, because when I boot up my trash shows content, and even before I launch FCP I can check the trash and it always contains FCP render files.
Anyone any idea what is going on?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello and thank you to all that have replied to my troubles. Very big apologies for the delay in my response. Other work issues forced me to move on from this problem. Needless to say, this one hasn't gone away!
Here is a bit more info:
I have used FCP Rescue. I have deleted my FCP prefs folder. The root to my scratch disk is HD2/Final Cut Pro/Capture Scratch. This drive has between 60 and 100GB free most of the time. This drive is not my startup volume.
Just for reference, I am not sure if the folder heirarchy is correct for FCP. My Final Cut Pro folder on this drive contains the following folders in its' root:
    Audio Capture Scratch
    Audio Render Files
    Autosave Vault
    Capture Scratch
    Render Files
    Thumbnail Cache Files
    Waveform Cache Files
Should all these folders be in the root of my Final Cut Pro folder? The reason I ask is that when I look into my Render Files folder the most recent projects I have worked on do not have project folders within this folder. In fact they do not seem to exist anywhere, apart from in the trash!!!
I hope you can pick back up on this issue for me. I am really only just getting to grips with FCP having been an AVID Media Composer person in a previous life. The software seemed fine for me when I didn't need to know what it did behind the scenes. Now I do and as you can tell, I'm struggling.
    Thanks again.

  • Remote Voice Over Workflows using FCP - thoughts?

I am going to try and keep this as simple as possible.
I am Producer and host for an Australian Drag Racing Show that we air nationally...
We record these shows in Full 1080 HD using modern XFILE systems (EVS) using the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec.
Our ENG/EFP team use XDCAM (full 1080i HD).
We edit these shows using FCP 7 amongst a few suites.
I also do some offline content on my 17inch i7 MBP using FCP too.
    My question is thus:
The Post Production Team are based in Sydney on the east coast, whilst I am based in Western Australia - this is like being in LA in comparison to New York!
I want to reduce my travel commitment by air, as in the past I have travelled weekly to commentate these shows (40+ shows a year!)
I have - as does the production house - a reasonably good ADSL Internet connection.
I do a lot of Producing and program checks using iChat Theatre within FCP 7. It is quite good.
What I want to get to though is a way in being able to more often commentate these shows remotely from home, without the need for me to physically having to be across country on every occasion - for my sanity's sake.
My co-commentator also lives near me, however our editors are all based across country, together in Sydney.
I see the following options as being the way to do this:
    OPTION 1.
When we ingest (log and transfer) the vision, I will always be in Sydney at that time. There are usually several shows generated from this vision.
I copy the Quicktime MOV files that are for use in the shows to my external (eSATA) HD.
Editors in Sydney cut the racing components of our show. They then email me the FCP project file.
(I have FCP, the required Audio and Mics)
Then, I open this FCP Project File and re-link and re-render as required once I receive this and we commentate the shows using the VO utility within Final Cut.
I then do an Audio export only and send the editors the updated FCP Project file, for them to receive and re-link the vision as required, sound mix and print.
    OPTION 2.
The Editors cut the shows, then export either within FCP or Compressor a reduced quality file size to send via FTP or sendspace.
I then import this vision locally into FCP, render the vision and commentate it accordingly and just send back the audio.
    SO:
What would you all suggest as the easiest and best way to do this. We do have tight work timeframes in terms of getting content to air.
I think Option1 is by far the best, and what I am not sure about is if I did Option2 - what settings for export and I want to avoid bogging down the editors on handling cumbersome vision exports anyway?
    Thoughts?
    Dean...

I would probably go with option 2, myself - I usually export my cuts and run the movie thru compressor with the H.264 LAN or H.264 800KBPS presets. These are found under Apple/Other Workflows/Web/Streaming/Quicktime 7/
These take up roughly 10MB per minute and 5MB per minute respectively.
While I have used Option 1 (duplicate media, transferring a project file), this can get problematic when the editors have generated media - like effects, color correction, etc...
    my 2¢
    Patrick

  • Do I need to render before Compressor?

Sorry about this newbie question. After coming back from Color, my timeline has the red lines on top of the clips. Do I need to render before to straight export via Compressor ? Or is Compressor sort of does the render? thx.

It makes no difference whether you render or not because FCP hands over the raw frames to Compressor. Compressor ignores all FCP render files.

  • GB, iWeb keep searching for FCP files in their Media Browsers

I recently (as in yesterday) upgraded to iLife '06. I did this primarily to produce a podcast which would be hosted by my .mac site- using iWeb to create it. I repaired permissions, ran MacJanitor, upgraded, restarted, repaired permissions, ran MacJanitor and openened GarageBand. All was fine. I made a new podcast file, connected my microphone, ready to do a test podcast, when the following suddenly popped up:
    Hitting "Stop" didn't do anything.
I waited patiently when eventually this came up:
The options were to search or cancel, but I chose cancel, because I don't need any of my videos (or at least not yet) in GarageBand. The file it is looking for above is a FCP file. It's one of FCP "Render Files" and obviously cannot be read by GarageBand. Unfortunately, after I hit cancel, I get about 7 secs of freedom before a similar message looking for the next of the render files (there are hundreds of them) pops up and then it continues on and on and on...
I don't want GarageBand to process these files, I want it to stop looking! Unfortunately, this same problem occurs with iWeb. So, the two apps I bought iLife for, I can't use. Any guidance in this area would be most appreciated.
    JC

    Hi, Hangtime
I've just tested the rename approach (simply added an "a" after "Movies" in the folder name)
Garage Band and iWeb no longer scan the folder for "media browser" content after doing so.
It depends a bit on JC's "workflow" which way would be more appropriate. I guess simply moving the problematic FCP files to another would resolve the problem for him as far as Garage Band and iWeb go, on a permanent basis. But he may need the FCP files in the "Movies" folder for other reasons, in which case simply renaming when using Gargeband or iWeb may be quicker. It would be nice to find a more elegant answer though. I wonder if it could be a "mediabrowser" plist issue?
    Cheers

  • Omf from fcp to pro tools

    Hello there,
Just finished offline of a feature film and done also the premix on FCP 5.0.4
now I will export it as OMF to work at OMNIMIX. They say pro tools won't recognise the sound clips as individual clips but as whole tracks instead.
Is this correct? and while mixing, using an omf file causes decrease in the quality of the sound.
The sound was recorded live on location to a Fostex pd6 dvd. All the sound is copied to the HD.
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi hande,
now I will export it as OMF to work at OMNIMIX. They
say pro tools won't recognise the sound clips as

    Is this correct?
No. Audio clips from FCP import as seperate audio regions in Protools, at the correct timecode locations.
and while mixing, using an omf file
causes decrease in the quality of the sound.
As Michael said, there is no quality loss. How could there be? It references/copies from, the same media files.
I agree that you may want to look elsewhere for this service. Mixing and mastering audio for video is my most commonly provided service, I can tell you with confidence that It sounds like your folks at Omnimix have never done this before.
Also, if you've done a reference mix in FCP, render that to an mp3 or something and send it along with. Can't hurt.
    Good luck.

MacBook Pro powered from power source. Why system goto sleep while FCP render active?

My wife's Macbook Pro does that when I'm running a maintenance program for some reason. I just set the energy pane to never go to sleep until the program finishes.
I suspect, but don't know for sure, that it is not detecting any on-going activity.
