FCP Studio defaults

I have some HD footage I'm trying to capture into FCP studio but it keeps defaulting to standard def.
Some setting I'm overlooking or something else I'm missing.
How do you capture HD footage into FCP studio??

You need to choose one of the EASY SETUPS under the FINAL CUT PRO menu. One that matches your footage.
Then create a new project and you should be good to go.

New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

Help My Mac Pro has been crashing in the middle of editing on FCP Studio!!!!

I am working on a Mac Pro 4.1 editing an hour and a half project on FCP Studio. I keep getting a fatal error where I have to restart my computer. This is the first time this has happened. Why is it happening?

Can't load fcp studio on new macbook pro/os 10.6.2

I just got a brand new macbook pro and wanted to load my fcp studio 1 but it is saying I don't have the proper hardware. It want tell me exactly what hardware. I just bought this computer, so I can not understand the prob. Is it the operating system---OS 10.6.2?
I bought upgrade disks for fcp studio 2--what happens now? Has Apple made it so an older version of FCP isn't compatible with newer macBooks?

FCP versions 1, 2, 3, 4, 4.5 and 5 will only run on a PPC processor Mac.
FCP versions 5.1 and 6 will run on both PPC and Intel Macs.
FCP version 7 will only run on IntelMacs.

Just bought new MacBook Pro and can't get FCP Studio to load on it. Any Help!

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and I tried to load FCP Studio on it and it says it does not support it. I use FCP Studio 2 and I need to use it as I don't know FCP X. Any suggestions. I currently have FCP Studio 2 on a 2008 Mac Pro with Maverick on it.

Final Cut Studio 2? That's 8 years old...4 OS versions ago. Mavericks doesn't take FCP 7 into account, much less FCP 6. In fact, to even install FCP 6 onto the PREVIOUS OS, Mountain Lion, you had to hack the terminal, or install Pacifist and do some shenanigans to get it to recognize the installer.
In short, it's very difficult to get older, discontinued software to work on new computers with new OSs. If you need to use FCP 6, then you need to stick to older computers and OS's that run it.
It is on your 2008 MBP because, no doubt, you upgraded the OS around the already installed apps. I'm not sure how well it will work.

FCP Studio 3 install on Power Mac G5

Anyone has tried to install the new FCP Studio 3 on a Power Mac G5 Quad computer? I have a PowerMac G5 Quad with FCP Studio 2 and want to find out wether I can upgrade to FCP Studio 3 or not?

Yes a shame about the G5 I had one until it went POP at the begining of the year.
Remember that any project created in FCP7 will not open in FCP6.
and once a FCP6 project is updated and saved in FCP7 it won't go back- so create a duplicate project.
have been playing with FCS3 for a couple of days now it's very good.

FCP (studio): imac vs. powermac

I am purchasing a new mac. I know using a powermac will be better,but for the price will I really see that big of a difference using the iMac(2.1) vs. the dual core 2.0? and, will the standared graphics cards offered be much different? thanks for the help!!

FCP will run on either, but if speed has any weight in your decision making, go with the faster machine. The Power Mac has always been the multi-media design workhorse, and while the iMac may reflect a few of it's attributes, it isn't the same machine.
Having said that, I have edited on an eMac, an iBook, a Powermac G3, G4, and G5- but the faster machine always gets the job done... faster! The way I fugure it, a cheaper computer lowers my overhead, so I can charge less- but if I bill by the hour am I really saving the client any $? Also, if you are thinking of doing multiple/long projects, you will want expandability. My system software (FCP Studio, Dreamweaver, Adobe, etc.) takes up nearly half of my 150GB system drive, and my 150GB scratch drive is almost always full, and in turn overflows onto my 300GB external drive. If that isn't enough, I can easily order a few 250GB HDs and have them installed in less then five minutes due to the nature of the powermac- something I can't do with an iMac. Worth thinking about...

Is the latest version of FCP studio compatible with Radeon X1600 graphics..

I read under the requirements that the latest version of FCP studio is not compatible with "integrated graphics cards"... what does that mean to me with an iMac that has a Radeon X1600 with 128MB and a bus type PCIe? Will it work?

Final Cut Studio 2 (with FCP 6) runs just fine on my 2.0 GHz 20" iMac CD, which has a 128 MB ATI Radeon X1600 with an external display (1280x1024) connected via DVI.

Compressor opens but am not able to transfer files from FCP studio?

Help! I have tried installing FCP Studio (6.02) 2 to 3 times. I have tried removing Compressor from the Applications list under the library preferences.
When I open Final Cut and highlight the sequence and then send to to Compressor, I see the Compressor title open up at the top but my files do not appear. I don't know if its corrupt or if there is a reset to cause all the windows to appear. I am able to use the drop down list to make the inspector and other windows appear but cannot find my files.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

That signals a problem with QMaster, which is most likely something you didn't remove prior to your reinstall. Apple published a document to help troubleshoot this problem, which has been linked to numerous times on this forum.

Moving FCP Studio from G5 to Laptop - user's license?

I've been running FCP Studio Pro on my G5 Tower. I've just bought a MacBook Pro - to take a project on a location shoot.
Am I legally entitled to install my 'single owner' FCP Studio on my laptop? And thus have it installed on my studio G5 and my laptop simulatneously?
At what point do I have to buy a multiple user license?

It's stated somewhere in the user manual or liscense agreement when you install the software that as a single liscense owner, you are allowed to install your software suite on one desktop, and one portable machine (seeing as MBP's aren't "laptops"...) so you should be fine. However, if you haven't gone through the crossgrade procedure (ie. sending in your old software discs, and paying a very reasonable fee in return for Final Cut Studio 5.1) then you will have to before installing on your MBP as 5.1 is the Universal Binary version required by the intel macs. How do I uninstall FCP Studio?

I have had FCP since they released the universal version. It has worked perfectly on my computer. I had an external harddrive connected to my computer. It recently stopped working and I had to return it and received a new one. Since I disconnected the hard drive, FCP also started to not work. Every time I would try to open FCP it would begin to open, the icon would bounce, and then it would close. I went to the apple store (waste of time) and they told me to uninstall FCP and reinstall it. Well, I thought that this would be an easy task. I attempted to just trash the entire FCP Studio and reinstall it, but every time I do, all the other programs except FCP reinstall...FCP just has a choice to UPGRADE it and even when I do that now I can't even get FCP to begin to open. I'm totally confused. How do I get FCP to work again on my system? ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

DVD Pro 4 upgrade to FCP Studio?

I have DVD Pro 2 on my Mac and can buy a v4 upgrade which gives me the chance to get the FCP Studio from Apple store.
My question is: What do I need for the upgrade to the Studio version?
Point is, I have DVD Pro 2 installed on my Mac but the v4 I will get from a friend in Australia, which the physical shippment will cost more than the whole software.
Is it enough when he will send me all the serial numbers which are with the (original shrinkwrapped) software or do I need to install the software to be able to install (or order) the FCP Studio upgrade?

You need the actual instal disc itself - as Apple ask for it to be sent back as proof of purchase. You don't need to install the software, though. I would get him to send you the DVD and serial number stickers only.
Be aware that the Studio upgrade dosn't include any printed manuals, just electronic .pdfs.

Uninstall FCP Studio?

I am selling my powerbook and want to uninstall FCP studio so I can put it on my new Desktop.
(I did not have any projects on the machine- so I did not need to do any back-up.)
I removed all FCP folders from finder and trashed them.
Is this all I need to do?
It's my understanding that you can only run FCP on one machine at a time so;
When I go to re install FCP Studio onto the powermac- how does it know that I have uninstalled. off the powerbook?

Best minimum iMac for running FCP Studio

A client of mine has hundreds of hours of tapes\film she wants to turn into a film. I want to set her up with an 'inexpensive' iMac powerful enough to run FCP Studio ...
I want to transfer (up-rez) all her footage to an HD ProRes format (not sure which yet), so she will be working in HD.
She needs to be able to view her footage and rough cut it into manageable chunks. Then I'll help her with the editing ... right up to final post-production, at which point we will move it into my studio which has all the bells and whistles.
So I'm looking for just enough power to capture all the footage, to work in HD, but not so much that she goes broke setting up an edit suite she may only use for this one film.

Check the minimum system requirements for FCP Studio. That will tell you what minimum hardware is required to use it. According to the Apple site:
