FCP to QT shimmers

Posted this as an iDVD problem but narrowed it to this: When I try to save a FCP file to Quicktime, it comes out with shimmering noise in high contrast areas, one scene has chairs that seem to move back and forth within the image.
Tried Streamclip from original burned dvd and exported to QT with no problems, so it seems conversion from FCP is the problem area...
Have this posted in QT forum but hope someone here might offer a clue...

Jim,
sounds like you have some illegal levels.
try using the "broadcast safe" filter before you export, see if that improves things.

  • How do I stabilize shimmering fine lines when zooming or panning?

I just completed an HD video that was exported in Standard Definition (SD) using Apple ProRes 422 codec. The video came out fine except when the clip of a JPG image zooms in or out using the zoom motion controls. The fine detail "shimmers" or "flutters", especially when zooming at a point when the image is nearly all the way zoomed out. (the fine detail is the smallest, then.) This is not a typical de-interlace problem where the whole image is highly erratic. The disturbance only happens on the fine detail in the JPG; the thicker lines are not affected. I applied a de-interlace filter and then separately applied a de-flicker filter. Neither of these filters had any effect. I was told by a highly regarded technician at our local access station who I would evaluate as an expert in FCP that this shimmering affect for fine detail was normal, especially in SD. HD, he said, will greatly reduce but will not eliminate it.
Does others have thoughts about this and possible solutions? Thank you

The flickering is an artifact of the two field structure of interlaced video. It is a result of very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text or titling. This can also be the case in images with great deal of detail with high contrast as well as when when you are engaged in pan/zoom moves on stills.
As the alternate fields play, the flashing element is essentially being turned on/off. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Before you start any of these steps listed below, make sure you are viewing your material on an appropriate monitor. If you are working in an NTSC/PAL interlaced format (eg DV) you need an external TV monitor - not a computer screen. Without the appropriate device, you are playing blind.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
    • (in FCP) field order>none
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
    • (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
    • (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
    • (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned images
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
One final thought, if you have slowed your material significantly, and have not used some sort of frame blending/optical flow processing, you may be simply duplicating frames to create the additional material to pad the playback. The flashing you see is the result of this.
    good luck.

  • Keylight 2.0 Issues in FCP

    Hi There,
I am struggling with green screen using keylight 2.0 in FCP.
    Screen shot of the details:
    www.golfsurvivalguide.com/Keylight_Issue.jpg
I cannot get a clean status view. I am getting green deposits in the white area that are showing in the final result as a shimmering black shirt with black spots on my teeth. I have read and reread the Foundry tutorials. My screen matte looks good and the green screen is pretty even so doesn't seem like this should be a difficult key.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Christina

I'm pasting in my workflow from an older AE forum post (sorry, too busy to write this out from scratch - hope it helps:))
+Duplicate the layer and apply Keylight to both. One for a Core Matte and one for an Edge Matte. Both are set to Combined Matte, with the top layer's (core) Transfer Mode set to Add. These two are precomposed and set as a Luma Matte for the unkeyed original layer.+
+For the Core Matte, in the Screen Matte controls, crank down the Clip Black and Clip White controls until all the green is gone from around the subject, and the body is fully matted with no holes. In Combined Matte this will be a fully white matte for the body surrounded by full black. There will be no edge detail. Then use Screen Shrink to choke this in.+
+For the Edge Matte, I just cranked down the Clip Black until the green around the subject was gone. The matte is full of holes, but that's what the underlying Core Matte takes care of.+
+This method bypasses Keylight's Spill Suppresion, so you might need to add AE's Spill Supressor afterwards, or a Hue/Saturation effect set to isolate and desaturate the greens.+

  • HD FCP to SD DVD – been through everything – need help

We're producing a DVD video of the 45th Reunion of the Ford GT40 and can not seem to get quality output from the compressor. The biggest problem is a flickering / shimmering / zig-zag effect on some scenes. Also can't seem to get a clear motion shot of a moving car. Freeze frames are perfect but the car in motion seems a bit blurry. Everything we've tried only seems to make it worse or has no effect. Workflow is from FCP7 → send to Compressor → m2v & ac3 to DVDSP.
We've played with the DVD preset MPEG-2 90 minute Best Quality with Dolby
GOP structure from IBBP to IBP and even IP – no visible effect
Flicker filter in FCP – helped a bunch but didn't fix everything
de-interlacing – better and best – this seemed to create more artifacts than it got rid of
We worked in 1920 x 1080 ProRes HQ and are compressing to 720 x 480 letterbox
Filmed on a Sony FX-7. I have heard some complaints about the FX-7's rolling shutter. I have artifacts in a pan and when a racing car passes across the screen. They are evident in FCP HD ProRes but get highly objectionable on the SD DVD. De-interlacing only seemed to converge a trailing image artifact into a big square blocks pixels. Looks like a comb off the trailing edge of everything moving.
So flicker stays and GOP goes back to IBP but de-interlace only worsened the problem.
    Need some guidance, please.
    Mark

    Try this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10453071#10453071
But if things are moving fast, the two interlace frames are 1/60 of a second apart in time. At 60 miles per hour, thats about one and a half feet! So, if you combine them (deinterlace) you get a sort of unpleasant "blur" maybe with horizontal lines for each new 30p frame.
WIth my V1U, I shoot almost everything in 30p now: no temporal displacemenet, but at the expense of all the blur being in each frame, or judder if my shutter speed is fast (that's when a moving object seems to jump from one place to the next: in the case of a car at 60mph, each 30p frame has the car moving about 3 feet. So, if I shoot at 1/30second shutter, that's a three foot blur, if I shoot at, say, 1/1250second, it freezes the car pretty well, but each from jumps the car about three feet forward.
    It's all a compromise.

  • HDV exported from FCP 7 into iDVD has red/green moire pattern?

Yesterday I was testing some native HDV (1440 x 1080)  in FCP 7.
I exported it as a QT Movie as I used to in the good old days but when I imported it into iDVD the image was coverd with a greeny-red moire type pattern.
It wasn't a serious problem as I simply re-exported as ProRes and that cured it.
However, I am curious as to what may have caused it as it never occurred in the dim and distant past.

Thanks for testing and confirming my findings Russ.
I didn't get this problem back in 2008 as native HDV, FCP and iDVD worked OK together  .  .  .  at least in that respect.
However, in those days I was using FCP 6 and I wasn't using OS X 10.6.8 or later. So maybe there has been a change in FCP 7 or the OS that has caused the problem.
OK, long answer to Michael as to why I was doing this "test".
    Back in 2008 I bought a new iMac and a Canon HV20 HDV camera expecting to see a dramatic improvement in image quality  .  .  .  .  which I did  .  .  .  .  on the computer .
I hadn't mastered DVDSP and Compressor and preferred to use my familiar iDVD which did everything I needed.
So I plonked my edited footage in iDVD and burned a standard def DVD.
I was horrified to find that the DVD footage shimmered badly where any straight lines or fine detail appeared but even worse was the appalling judder that occurred with any subject or camera movement.
I spent several weeks investigating and testing, deinterlacing, swopping fields, converting to AIC and ProRes  etc. etc. to no avail. (Incidentally if I set my camera to downconvert to DV during capture, the DVDs produced were fine, but I wanted to edit those beautifully detailed HDV images not DV ones).
Finally a suggestion from Tom Wolsky solved the problem  .  .  .  .  .  put the finished edited project in a DV-PAL  sequence in FCP and render it.
The result was rock solid images and beatiful smooth  motion.
However, the downside was the time it took to render the HDV project to DV which I found unacceptable.
So I gritted my teeth and taught myself to use DVDSP which got rid of the problem of instability but introduced other, admittedly lesser, but well documented problems. But that's another story.
Now we come to the present.
Last year I bought a Panasonic SD800 3 MOS AVCHD camera, edited in FCP X and exported either to AVCHD Discs or standard DVD.
A few weeks ago I was showing a friend how to use iDVD and the only footage available was my AVCHD stuff.
I used it, expecting the same (or even worse) instability as I had found with HDV.
To my pleasant surprise, the resulting DVD was acceptably stable with smooth motion.
So a couple of  days ago I started wondering whether HDV in FCP X and iDVD would be OK.
It was, which meant I could go back to iDVD occasionally when I wanted one of its custom canned menus.
Then I wondered what HDV in FCP 7 sent to iDVD would produce.
    Hence my recent test!
I bet you wished you had never asked, Michael.

  • Unable to capture in FCP 6, HELP!

Trying to capture dvx100 footage using FCP 6(studio2) with no luck.
When initiating log and capture, I can control my camera via FW, but preview is disabled as well as
    ability to capture footage.
I have tried deleting pref's, deleting QT prefs, triple checked settings (NTSC DV), tried variations of
turning camera off/on during opening of FCP as well as using alternate ports.
I'm at a loss. Can anyone help!!?!?!
    - Need to cut something asap.
    Thanks.

Thank you Patrick. You have helped me before, so thanks again.
I do not have anything else connected to the firewire ports. I have an external hard drive, but I have tried to capture with and without the hard drive attached. I did recently back up using Carbon Copy Cloner to another hard drive, if anyone thinks this may be the issue.
I can't recall the exact error message in FCP (I have deleted the program trying to fix the issue, and focus on the capture problem in Quicktime thinking that if Quicktime and iMovie both don't capture, that the problem is not with FCP, but either with the OS or the back end of QT) I can re-install FCP to give you the exact FCP error message if you would like me too. Ie, if the exact error message is necessary.
    Thanks again for your response.

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Unable to capture HDV in FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVR-Z1P

Hi I'm attempting to capture HDV footage from a Sony Z1.
I am trying to capture some HDV footage I shot with the Z1, but FCP simply refuses to recognize the Z1
I'm certain I've got all the settings correct:
    - Camera is set to HDV firewire out
    - capture presets is set to HDV
    - device control preset is set to Sony HDV FireWire
    - sequence preset is set to HDV 1080i50 (I'm in Australia)
    - footage IS HDV 1080i50
But I keep getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device and Device Control" popup. I've tried everything
    - rebooted the camera
    - restarted FCP
    - rebooted the system
    - changed the capture/device control settings in FCP and tried out a regular DV deck to make sure it wasn't the cable
    Nothing has worked.
I'm on a MBPro I7. No Kona card or anything like that, just trying to capture through firewire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Matt
At present it will capture HDV in IMovie but not FCP 6.0.1

Thanks Adrian, since posting the thread I've thought of that too but unfortunately to no avail. From other forums I've read this seems to be a central theme to the solution to my capture woes. I since have sorted the problem it was in Audio/Video Settings.
In the end I set my Audio/Video Settings to:
Sequence Preset to: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Capture Pre-HDV- Apple intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
And hey presto my I'm capturing HD without any problems. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • FCP & CRT Video Monitors with 24" iMac

I am considering the purchase of a 24" iMac with the optional 7600GT video card for video editing. I have read that the $19 Apple "Mini-DVI to Video Adapter" will give me audio and SVGA outputs to connect to a TV/CRT monitor. But I have read many user comments that claim the LCD display in the iMac suddenly changes resolutions when this Mini-DVI adapter is plugged into the iMac. But those comments don't say if it happens to every iMac (including the new 24") or just to older iMacs. I also wonder if the 7600GT video card makes any difference.
My intention is to edit video in FCP on this 24" iMac and I wish to view full resolution standard video on a CRT video monitor. But I would prefer it if the resolution of the iMac screen didn't change while I view the video on the CRT monitor. I want to see the iMac display at full resolution and the CRT video monitor at its full resolution, at the same time. Is this possible with a 24" iMac that has the 7600GT video card? Or am I forced to get a more expensive Mac Pro system to accomplish this feat?
    Many thanks.
    G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I wish to view full resolution standard video on a CRT video monitor.<<</div>
As Zeb pointed out, your method is NOT the way to properly view FCP's output on an external TV monitor. To do it the right way, you'll first need to determine which video formats you'll be working with; all DV25 formats can be monitored via the Firewire output through a qualified DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter). All other formats will require the addition of a dedicated card, such as those offered by Kona and Decklink, or a box like the MXO by Matrox.

  • How many times can you install FCP?

Hello everyone, new to the forums here. I've searched throught he forums but couldnt find an answer to my question.
I'm in the middle of installing Final Cut Studio 2 (waiting to put in the next disc) when my buddy came over and mentioned that you could only install FCP one time and never install it again on any other computer. This worries me because in January I was going to get a new Mac Pro and un-install FC from my Macbook Pro so I could use it on the new computer. Is this possible? Or once I install this on my laptop is it permanent?
Thanks in advance for the help

Ok so you can install it on as many machines as you like but can only use (or have one activated through registering) one at a time. I know this is a touchy subject with piracy and all, but I thought it would just be rediculous if I installed this on my laptop, and 6 months down the line wanted to install it on another computer that I own.

  • DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?
    Thanks all,
    Best wishes
    Michael

    Hi Thomas, that's it!
Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?
Thanks again for the answer - and so quick on a Sunday too!
    Kind regards
    Michael

  • Want to hide or mod FCP 6 Splash Screen

Just want to hide the splash screen on my FCP system. I rent it to indy projects and I want to protect my serial. How can I access the Splash Screen Image? I've been able to mod the splash screen on all the other apps on the rental system but can not find or get to the Splash Screen for Color and FCP 6. I know that a real hacker can find my serial some how but I am not trying to block those geniuses. Just the lazy ones that are willing to go as far as copying or screen grabbing my Splash Screen and or About Screens to get a working serial. I know how to mod the Splash Screen to hide my serial and how to hide the app so the user can't get to the splash screen. I just don't know where the splash screen file is. I've read that it is in the .nib files? I just wanna hide my serial. Don't care if I mod it myself or install an app that does it for me. Any apple people or anyone else know what I can do to protect my product. I've also been told that the splash screen does not display the full serial but it soo totally does. Hey apple, please add the ability to hide this splash screen. Perhaps with it's own password to unlock and show again? OR, make splash screen hiding a universal ability in the OS. That would be sweet! Anyway,... ideas?

Hey all. I have been able to mod the splash screen on all the apps in FCP Studio 2 except for FCP and Color. The other studio apps Splash Screens access a .psd file. The only files I've found in Color that seem like they might be the splash screen files are ft_splash.Isi, ft_splashEDU.Isi, ft_splashNFR.Isi and ft_splashVOL.Isi
How do I open a .Isi file? If I can figure that out I can hide the serial number for Color but it still leaves FCP. Why do apps show the serial on the splash screen at all? What purpose does this serve?

  • FCP 6 no longer 'sees' my Sony HDR-HC7.  Works perfectly with iMovie HD

I used to be able to capture from and print to my HC7. Setup was saved. Now, FCP doesn't 'see' the camera with the saved settings, or when I try setting it up again from scratch. Camera connection, driver, etc. are good in that the camera works perfectly with IMovie HD. Obviously I've messed something up in FCP, but I can't find it. Suggestions?

Thanks for the response SDIllini, unfortunately when I do go the Disk Utility, my camcorder isn't even show for me to even repair the disk permissions. As monty jr stated, Sony was no help for me either, they also told me that I would need to contact Apple. The problem still remains unsolved though, it's as if the MBP just doesn't recognize the camcorder whatsoever. I'm open to any suggestions, have anymore?

  • FCP and Mavericks

    Hi,
I have recently upgraded to Mavericks and am now realising that FCP has slowed down considerably. I'm using a mac pro with 10GB RAM and haven't had problems with it before. Any idea on possible solutions? Anything I could do to boost my system a bit and work more comfortably until I upgrade to FCP X (if that's compatible!)
