FCP X rendering

For some reason I can render a project, close the system, then when I open it again it seems to start rendering again..... Anyone know why it might do this? I render long projects with a lot of graphics for motorsport in preparation for the commentator to arrive, then when he does and I open a project we have to wait for it to render, which can take 20 minutes in some cases on my system. Very annoying!

This issue is not uncommon. I guess you have automatically render turned off. But you actually do not need to render anything only when you have problems with playback in the timeline. You can export unrendered files without issue. I have no idea why this happens what you describe, but it happens. I had this issue with older version of FCPX. Not in current version. What version of FCPX are you running ?

  • Uninstall FCP for rendering problem? Then re-install?

I keep loosing my render files. I think the problem started when I installed an update for FCP. Now, the render files disappear. I'll render, but then they go away.
I've seen posts with others having this same problem. Would un-installing FCP work? Of course, I'll back up my video on an external drive - just in case. Then I'll re-install my FCP, hoping that this will solve my disappearing render files.
If you'd like more details to my rendering problem, here's the post I put up a few days ago that describes in greater detail what's happening...

Do you think un-installing would work?

Hi JGD 500, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I noticed there is no mention of hardware space - should there be? This information doesn't show up anywhere in the disc utility diagnostics/profile - leading me to the thing the harddrive is busted - but the hardware test found no problems.
Yes, I believe if it can't see the HD, it won't test it or even mention it.
I've seen several Notebook HDs die within a years time, they've always been the worst HDs, but I think the pressures of today's world are making them even worse.

  • General error in FCP re: rendering and export  after Quicktime 7.5.5 update

    Hi
My FCP 6.0.4 rendering and export to Compressor no longer works after an update to Quicktime 7.5.5.
Rendering fails after a few seconds "General Error!" pops up. Exporting to Compressor, after setting it compressing, Compressor after a few seconds fails. (audio is processed) My current work around is exporting a sequence using Quicktime conversion (time consuming) and then opening in Compressor.
I've done the usual, deleting prefs, new sequences and projects, even saving movs in different codecs.
    (been using H.264)
My sequences are all custom sizes but tests using presets also fail.
    Any ideas anyone?
And I was so happy the Quicktime upgrade could play sequence movs recorded months earlier that until now I couldn't play properly due to previous Quicktime upgrades!
Apple gives with one hand and takes with the other....

    Hi There,
Thanks for your reply on this.
Well basically since I'm using content already in the H.254 codec (eg: a trailer off the internet, or the downsizing of HD footage) i'm just exporting to a codec that didn't have to be rendered and gave quality results. I used motion jpeg B as an export codec because it was quick (although HD space hungry) with no drop in quality. The resulting exports could be imported into a custom sequence (720 x 405) as square pixel aspect ratio files. Overlapping the canvas with other windows (eg: viewer) meant I could play a clip (with dropped frames) but not have to render it. I selected the H.264 codec as the sequence codec because I've found other codecs introduce darkening or lightening or blurring or other undesirable artefacts when exported to Compressor. H.264 used in the sequence settings exported through Compressor would give resulting m2v's as sharp and contrast accurate as the source file.
That was until the recent 7.5.5 Quicktime update where attempts to do the same things I did before result in "General Error!" coming up after a few seconds of play or rendering.
Traditional DV codecs are "blurry" in my opinion, especially when coping with web content or conversion of HD downloads.
If you can suggest an editing codec that works best with FCP that is quick, doesn't introduce blurring or general degrading of the image I'd be happy to try it out. I typically downsize HD content from the web for DVD playback, so it's usually in a H.264 codec already. So i would need a codec for export from Quicktime that would work best with a codec in FCP. That doesn't alter picture quality when compressed to m2v in Compressor.
    Thanks!

  • !! Sound Studio / AIFF / FCP : Poorly rendered files in timelilne

I will try to describe my problem the best I can...
-Imported AIFF audio files into FCP (these files were generated in Sound Studio).
When I drag these files into the viewer, they sound fine.
-Pulled these audio files into my time line.
    -Rendered them.
-The rendered audio files are barely audible. When I open the rendered audio clips from my time line in the viewer, they still sound awful whereas the unrendered files, which are still in my browser, sound OK.
Any idea why this would be happening?
Thanks for your help and please let me know if you need more details.

Here's the info on the particular audio clip that's troubling me:
    -Audio rate: 44.1 KHz
    -Audio format: 16 bit integer
    -Data rate: 172.3 k/s
What's strange is that I have music files with the same audio rate (44.1) that render and play normally. Only the audio format is different:
    -Audio rate: 44.1 KHz
-Audio format: 32 bit floating point
    -Data rate: 45.8 k/sec
Any idea how I can "convert" the troublesome audio clip? When you say " they will need to be rendered" I assume you are referring to a different type of rendering and not FCP's typical rendering (Sequence/Render/Render all)?
Thanks for your help so far. I really do appreciate it.

  • FCP LONG RENDERING TIMES, MANUAL FADES J U M P I N G.... Please h e l p!

    Hello
Firstly please bare with me as im trying to be thorough
I have final cut studio HD 2.
I am making a "HALO MACHINMA"(basically making a film from manipulated game footage) film for my final project at university.
My HD recorder kicks the files out a M2TS files, so since as far a sim aware FCP cannot touch these I have been converting them to HD quicktime videos using the program "Xilisoft HD converter "
Once i imported these files i was able to edit one scene fine. No issues.
However i have come back to my project a week later. I opened a NEW PROJECT so i could edit another scene without having a huge timeline. I began by using one of my clips and doing a manual opening fade with the pen tool. However rendering took far longer than usual (I have 4GB of RAM so for something so small its usually near instant), then when i went to replay it the fade kept jumping. if i manually tab the timeline bar over it using the right arrow i can see every frame, but play back jumps. (also if i export the video it doesn't jump, however i cant edit correctly like it currently is)
So my issue is, The LARGE rendering times, and the fact it jumps when played if i alter it.
    Things ive tried:
I thought, well maybe if i go back to the original project i can try putting the files in there and editing, since maybe the project settings were weird on the other one. However the new files still do the same there.
SO then i thought "maybe these unedited files are corrupt or something similar" SOOOO within the original project I copied an original file that previously worked fine. HOWEVER even the old files dont work correctly. I cannot even alter the original project without HUGE rendering times, however the playback still "appears" fine on the original project.
I am also getting 2 RED rendering lines about the video and audio. where it used to only be 1. (if im correct 2 means the audio and video needs rendered)
If i place in another file like a standard quicktime or AVI i do not have a problem.
I do not understand how it once worked, now does not on these files? have some setting changed?
(when i start a new project i get the box that says the settings are wrong for this, change etc etc. I click YES -so i'm guessing its meant to work fine then)
Please help me, im running out of time on this final university project and any help will be very appreciated.
    Thank you
    Sam Edwards

    Hi Nick
Yes the files i'm using are .MOV files. according to Xilisoft they are HD .MOV files.
although it may only claim there HD due to the high resolution. -1092x1080
ok so i clicked more info on the file and it claims its codec is MPEG-4 video, AAC.
I dont under stand that if there .MOV files then why would they have this codec?
    confused.
    Thank you

  • Will system ssd increase fcp 6 rendering speed?

I have a mac pro 3.1, 8 core, 10G ram, running leopard 10.5.8 on a mechanical hd.  Would replacing it with a good SSD increase rendering speed in FCP 6 to any significant degree ?

To the extent that the OS and app code will be available more quickly, yes rendering will speed up. What's important to remember is that FCP rendering is not solely dependent on disk I/O (or core count for that matter) when it renders. I'm going to try the same thing but I'm looking for inches, not yards.
If you decide on giving it a go, I'm say consider an upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) at the same time since it's a code shrink release and will give you a little speed as well.  I'm planning on a 256GB SSD since I want my Library on SSD too so the Application Support folder is fast as well (and it's large) as well as OS, Apps, and a lot of free space.
Another place I'm looking at SSD for is a Compressor buffer since it is my opinion that Compressor is often disc-bound and will may speed up with a faster target disc. It sure did back in the G4 days.
    Hope this helps

  • FCP color rendering in QuickTime

The colour (I'm English hence the spelling) of my video (which I uploaded to the web) looks different when played back in Safari from the same video when viewed with Firefox and played back on my desktop with QuickTime - both these are colour accurate to the output of Final Cut Pro. Is there any reason for this? Am I missing a trick with a color profile setting in QuickTime or Safari? Safari seems to be throwing things off?
I have ticked the box in QT preferences which enables Final Cut Pro color compatibility.

Thanks. I think I'm going to start using compressor more. QT just doesn't have the control I need and not being able to carry through the gamma settings from FCP is a hassle.

  • FCP not rendering... Help

FCP will not render audio or video. This just started today after lots of working with no issues. What do I do to fix this?

Ok, I figured it out. I guess my sequence had somehow been corrupted and wouldn't allow me to render. When it did, an error came up saying "General Error". I had to start a new project and copy/paste all my footage into the new sequence.

  • FCP has Motion file rendering problems

I am using FCP Studio 2 on a Dual-core 2.66GHz Intel Xeon Mac Pro.
I am importing Motion projects into my FCP timeline and have been getting problems.
When I first imported motion projects into my 720p24fps timeline they rendered clean. Now occassionally they either need to be re-rendered, not all of them, or they render and then when played FCP gives me the Unrendered screen when it is rendered in the timeline.
This is the most current problem. I have chosen within my FCP timeline to send a video file to motion to process the green screen. After processing the GS in Motion I save the project and return to FCP. In FCP I rendered the video files, including the motion file, in my timeline and some of them worked great. My recent render however has produced hits in my motion graphics background layer while retaining clarity in my Motion GS video.
Does anyone have any idea as to what I might be experiencing?
    I have screen shots.
    Thanks,
    -Tim

Okay, so here is what I did to fix the hits that are occuring in my Motion files within my FCP timeline.
I had to cut out the underlying Motion project background from behind my green screen Motion treated foreground. Then I reapplied the Motion project background layer and re-rendered. Now, it's working.
So Motion and FCP dev teams, is this common or is it something I'm doing wrong? If you have time of course.
    Thanks,

  • FCP rendering speed

    Hi.
I have used to do some stuff in Motion to 1024x576 (square pix pal) and take it to FCP to uncompressed anamorphic PAL sequence.
With my old mac (powerPC) and with old FCP it rendered quite fast (in this case about 10 minutes) but now with new FCP (studio2) and dual quad-core intel the same thing takes about 50 minutes to render with same settings. How can this be true? What is this new FCP doing differently?
In motion I have resolution full, render quality normal and motion blur on. I think it is this motion blur that takes so much time but why didn't it take before?
    Thanks..

Now I found that in Sequence Settings there was quality control for Motion Projects. Changing it to Normal reduced rendering speed dramatically but it didn't give me motion blur anymore. :/

  • Rendering LIve Type on FCP

I created many comments on LIveType then render to movies. I imported to FCP. I put all to timeline. I move it wherever I want to make that point. It took hours to render. Then I move one livetype to other place then rest of them move back to the point where i remove the clip of livetype. Cause all livetype render. It leads hours hours to render. Is there a way to avoid?

What Patrick means is that FCP's rendering is destructive. Or, rather, it's constructive. If you put something on top of another track, you must render it to see it in real time. If you move one of the parts of the combined tracks, of course it has to re-render because the relationships have changed.
You avoid re-rendering by learning how to use all kinds of shortcuts and workflow enhancements. Those take time and practice. Don't render till you're ready or use a lower quality render setting till you're ready to finalize.
THese things cannot be handled in these little posts. They are the subjects of many tutorials and long articles.

  • Rendering to wrong drive- invisible?

    3:05PM
I have all rendering, capture, etc going to my 300GB 2nd drive on my SATA bus (G5). Everytime I render, my boot drive gets smaller and smaller. THere are NO documents in the FCP Documents folder in my user folder (/user/Documents/Final Cut Pro Documents). What is going on here? I have searched my drive for any new files by date (today) and nothing shows up for FCP. Nothing of serious size either. Does FCP "cache" any renderings to the boot drive? I have an 80GB boot drive, 2.5 GB RAM, 10.4.3, FCP 5.0.3
    3:10PM
I have now lost 2GB on my boot drive. I have searched by date, by size, by type, and by name ("render"). Nothing. I do not get how 2 gigs can go away and have no record via a search. This only happens when I render.
    3:20PM
I restarted and gained back all 2GB. So where is this happening?
    Day 2
Well now it is only getting worse. I have <1GB on my boot drive. All happened while FCP was rendering. I had 5GB this morning when I started and throughout the day it got smaller and smaller. I have searched every concievable way to find the culprit and I have found nothing. EVEN BY DATE! I am so frustrated now. I am at a stand still. FCP will not render anymore. It did ask to use render manager to delete files. But why? All rendering is done on the 2nd drive. I have >7GB there.
    Day 3
Now this is getting way wierd. Although my ssetting specify the location, there is not a project folder for this project, in the render folder. The names of render files are "sequence....". I searched for that everywhere. there is not a file with that name on my boot drive. I searched for "render", nothing. When the render manager came up, I deleted some files and that was immediately reflected on my boot drive by showing more space available. Guys, I give up.

I remember reading a post once by someone who ran into the same thing and I can't remember if he determined it was caused by "human error" (although I don't know how you can even select the FCP app package in FCP System Settings) or a glitch in the default folder setup.
Either way, I would trash the prefs (if you haven't already) and carefully reset your scratch drive then test it out by rendering a few things to make sure they go where they are supposed to.
Out of curiosity. Did your original scratch settings have captures and renders set for different drives or were your captures going the the application package as well?

  • Smooth Scrolling Credits for FCP !#$#

To start, I am creating scrolling credits from scratch in Motion 2 to import into my NTSC-DV FCP5 session.
I had accomplished beautiful scrolling credits in Motion to FCP about 6 months ago and cannot for the life of me produce good looking scrolling credits again! I have gone through this forum and there are about 100 different ideas out there...export using the animation codec with "render fields" selected, simply import the Motion session into FCP and render it, use large fonts, use the "scroll up" behavior, use keyframing... I have even tried After Effects which was WAY easier than Motion but produced similar fluttering effects.
Any way I try to do it, the scrolling text always comes out in FCP after rendering (and viewing on an external monitor) with the all too common jagged scroll...like the letters are fluttering in between fields as they scroll up..
My latest atempt in Motion to create this scrolling text consists of this:
    1) Open an NTSCDV session in Motion
    2) Using the text tool I write in my credits in the "Inspector" under the "text" tab
    3) I then appply the "scroll up" behavior to the text from the "Add Behavior/Text Animation" dropdown menu at the top of the screen.
    4) The record light below the canvas is on, I goto the newly added "Scroll Up" behavior in the "Inspector" under the "Behaviors" tab and there is a keyframe already added at the beginning of the "Scroll Up" layer in the timeline. I move the "Position Offset" slider down so the beginning (top) of the text is right below the bottom of the screen.
    5) I then move to the end of the "Scroll Up" layer in the timeline (which is 30 seconds long BTW), add another keyframe in the "Scroll Up" layer and slide the "Position Offset" slider so that my text has just disappeared at the top of my screen.
    6) I drag the cursor through the 30 second roll in the timeline verifying that it scrolls up the way I want.
    7) I ensure the project properties are set correctly before I save. This includes making sure the field order is set to "Lower" in the "General" tab, and in the "Render Settings" tab making sure the output antialiasing method is set to "Best" and that "Use dithering" IS checked. In the Motion Blur setting the samples are set to "8" and the shutter angle is set to 360.
    8) I then save the project, import the project file into my FCP NTSCDV session, drag it to the timeline, render it, and playback to an external monitor.
    Possible Problems:
    1) I am thinking that maybe the text is scrolling up too slow and it is impossible to get clean text without the jagged/fluttering effect. As when I shorten the scroll to 20 seconds there is less of a fluttering effect (but it is impossible to read the text as it is scrolling up so fast)
    2) There is some "Project Property" setting in Motion that I have messed up.
    3) I should not be using the scroll up feature with keyframing but perhaps just keyframing the actual text itself to move up? (although I have tried this with worse results)
I have wasted hours trying different routes, reading the manual, searching this forum, to no avail. Who has the magic recipe I am looking for? Please help.

    Bryan,
I attempted to adjust the white level, the field order, but don't think ever got to messing around with FCP's processing settings...I am actually encoding the film right now as I was under the gun and actually found the "scroll" plugin in FCP to work just as good if not better than Motion without any tweaking so had to roll wth that. I will attempt to tweak the Motion file again though as I cannot bear sub-par credits. Will also email you the Motion file if you don't mind.

  • Compressor/FCP quits unexpectedly possibly due to ProMedia plug-in

    Hi all
I am sending a finished project to Compressor from FCP, without rendering first. Much of the project is comprised of embedded Motion files. I keep getting a "quit unexpectedly possibly due to the ProMedia plug-in" alert. After repairing the HD, fixing permissions, zapping pram, trashing plists and re-installing the latest pro apps update, FCP still quits on Compressor with the above alert. The audio makes it through, but not the video. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Thanks David. The job will be delivered on DVD, so that's an extra render, yes? Would I render with an uncompressed or Animation codec before sending it to DVDSP?

  • Rendering Error in 6.0.5

I am trying to render some transitiion in FCP 6.0.5. Whenever I try to, I get "File Error: The specified file is open and in use by this or another app". I do not have anything else open on my computer. I tried restarting FCP, but rendering only works the first few times and then I get the same message! Help!

Neither of these have worked.. Only the first few times after I open FCP, it will render, and then I get the same message but I have nothig opened. I have trashed my preferences (like the first person said), deleted my virus software... One of my professors told me to delete my render files folder, which IS working but I have to keep doing it like every 2 minutes! Any other ways? It's NEVER done this before so many times in a row!!!
